Hogwarts Legacy is an upcoming open-world RPG that will allow players to explore the Wizarding World of Harry Potter like never before.
The game is set within the Potter universe but is set roughly a century before The Boy Who Lived arrived at Hogwarts. The game will offer you the chance to live out your wizarding fantasies, attending classes, learning new spells and taming fantastic beasts. You can even venture beyond the walls of the iconic school of witchcraft and wizardry.
Hogwarts Legacy rumors existed for years owning to a trailer leak in 2018, but the game was officially revealed in September 2020. What followed was a period of silence from the development team, but in recent months a deluge of news has been confirmed including multiple gameplay showcases and a concrete release date — although the previous gen and Nintendo Switch versions have since been delayed.
In less than two months we’ll be walking the halls of Hogwarts ourselves, but until that day finally arrives, here’s everything we know about Hogwarts Legacy. ..
Hogwarts Legacy release date
Originally announced for release in 2021, Hogwarts Legacy was later delayed into 2022. Sadly that revised release window proved too ambitious and the game was moved again this time into 2023
Hogwarts Legacy is now set to release on February 10, 2023. Developer Avalanche Software confirmed this news on social media , and also gave a brief reason for the delay: «The team is excited for you to play, but we need a little more time to deliver the best possible game experience.»

However, Hogwarts Legacy will not release on all platforms in February. While the PS5, Xbox Series X and PC versions will be ready on that date, Avalanche Software has announced that the PS4 and Xbox One versions will launch roughly two months later on April 4, 2023.
And the Nintendo Switch edition will follow on July 25, 2023.

Hogwarts Legacy was revealed during the PlayStation showcase, leading to speculation it would be exclusive to Sony hardware, but the Hogwarts Legacy website clearly lists its release platforms as PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X, Xbox One and PC.
In a surprising twist, a Nintendo Switch version of Hogwarts Legacy has been confirmed as well. However, as noted above, this version of the game won’t be launching until July 2023. It appears the developers need a little extra time to get Hogwarts Legacy running smoothly on Nintendo’s handheld/home console hybrid system.

The Hogwarts Legacy reveal trailer offers a pretty fantastic look at the game. It showcases the famous castle and the variety of ways you’ll be able to interact with the Wizarding World and its inhabitants (both human and beast). There’s even a hint of who the game’s main villain might be, and they look just as fierce as He Who Must Not Be Named.
Over the summer Gamescom 2022 offerd a brand new Hogwarts Legacy trailer. This fresh look at the game focuses on Slytherin student Sebastian Sallow and the path of the Dark Arts that players can choose to walk down. Apparently this trailer is almost entirely made up of footage from an optional questline, which suggests that Hogwarts Legacy’s side content will be more than just mundane fetch quests.
There’s also the «Feel the Magic» trailer which showcases the game’s PS5 exclusive features using recycled footage from the State of Play presentation. A PlayStation blog post goes into further detail on the game’s implementation of the console’s DualSense controller.
To commemorate Back to Hogwarts Day — an annual celebration of all things Harry Potter — four new Hogwarts Legacy trailers were released, one dedicated to each of the house common rooms. You watch all four trailers in this YouTube playlist .
The latest Hogwarts Legacy trailer places the spotlight on the game’s music. Set over a few brand new snippets of footage, this music video features a choir and orchestral members playing one of the game’s main themes, Overture to the Unwritten. It’s not our most in-depth look at the actual game, but it’s a further sign that plenty of care is going into even the less flashy stuff like the game’s soundtrack.
Hogwarts Legacy gameplay
The best way to get a sense of what Hogwarts Legacy gameplay will be like is via its 14 minute extended gameplay demo. This fairly comprehensive video showcases tons of features from the game’s expansive open-world to it’s exhilarating combat system, and has got us pretty excited about playing Hogwarts Legacy later this year.
Hogwarts Legacy will allow players to step into the famous Wizarding Wizard as a new character, not featured in any of the books or movies. You’ll play as a magical late bloomer, who joins the school as a fifth year student. Within the walls of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry you’ll learn spells in class, brew all potions, duel fellow classmates and uncover the castle’s many secrets.

The gameplay presentation also confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy will offer an exciting combat system with dozens of spells at your disposal. You’ll also be able to make use of unique abilities such as invisibility, as well as magical plants that can incapacitate your enemies.
Developing your skills as a witch or wizard will be a key part of Hogwarts Legacy. The game includes a talent system that allows key attributes to be upgraded and new skills to be unlocked. Your character also has access to a type of «old magic» that is extremely powerful.
The Room of Requirement also appears to be play a large part in the game.
Players will use the ever changing room as a sort of home base. Here you can develop your wizarding abilities, grow useful plants, upgrade your gear and brew potions. You’ll also have access to a customizable menagerie, where it will be to tame and care for all manner of fantastic beasts.

Exploration appears to be a big part of Hogwarts Legacy (both on foot and via flying broomstick). Not only will the entirety of Hogwarts to available for players to roam, but also nearby locations such as Hogsmead and the Forbidden Forest. Each location will offer secrets to uncover and side quests to take on.
The aforementioned gameplay trailer also reveals that players will be able to choose which of the four Hogwarts houses they are sorted into. Although, there are no details as to whether this will be a straightforward user choice, or if it will involve some sort of gameplay mechanics or morality system.
If all those juicy details weren’t enough to hold you over until February, a gameplay showcase was held earlier this year.
This 45-minute presentations offers an in-depth look at several aspects of the game including its character creator and we’ve also got to see the HUD for the first time.
The showcase also includes a brief tour of Hogwarts (but don’t worry the developers have confirmed there are still plenty of secrets to be discovered ourselves) and we also got a further understanding of how combat will function. This latest look at Hogwarts Legacy gameplay has got us itching to play ourselves in early 2023.
And if one lengthy gameplay showcase wasn’t enough for you, a second one was livestreamed earlier this month. This latest look at Hogwarts Legacy focuses on exploration of the world beyond the famous castle, including how broomstick and mount flight works. It also includes an extended look at combat via the Dark Arts Battle Arena, which is an exclusive area for owners of the Deluxe Edition.
This presentation ended with a demonstration of the Room of Requirement, and we’re shocked how much freedom this space appears to provide.
You can almost entirely customisation the room to match your personality, and you can even care for magical creatures in the adjacent terrarium. We predict we’ll spend hours re positioning and re sizing all the furniture and trying to decide what to name the many beasts in our care.
Hogwarts Legacy multiplayer

Witches and wizards dreaming about exploring the famous castle with a friend will be disappointed to learn that there doesn’t appear to be any form of multiplayer mode planned for Hogwarts Legacy.
An extensive PlayStation Blog post includes comment from the development team and confirms that Hogwarts Legacy is a single-player action RPG at its core. So don’t expect any form of multiplayer or an online component, at least not at launch.

No prizes for guessing that the primary setting in Hogwarts Legacy will be the eponymous wizard school.
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is a place that millions have dreamed about attending, and Hogwarts Legacy will bring that dream to life.
The developers have talked about wanting to “chart new territory by creating fresh ways for fans to immerse themselves in the Wizarding World” so perhaps we may see some locations within Hogwarts that until now haven’t been unearthed. Is there an even more secret chamber hidden somewhere within the castle walls?
It’s also been confirmed that Hogwarts Legacy will stretch beyond Hogwarts and encompass the larger Wizarding World. Iconic locations like Hogsmead Village, the Forbidden Forest and the Black Lake will be explorable.
The Scottish Highlands surrounding the school will also be open for adventuring, and dotted with unique wizarding hamlets to visit. Each of these will house vendors as well as side quests and new puzzle dungeons to tackle.
We’re hoping that we’ll be able to take a trip to Diagon Alley and do some magical shopping.
Although, London-based locations haven’t been confirmed.
Hogwarts Legacy exclusive content
Wannabe witches and wizards playing on PS5 and PS4 will be treated to some exclusive Hogwarts Legacy content in the form of an additional quest and potion recipe.
The PlayStation exclusive quest is called The Haunted Hogsmeade Shop. And will see your character assist a mysterious shopkeeper named Cassandra Mason who is harboring a sinister secret. Completing the quest will reward you with an additional outfit and a shop of your own where you can sell items and gear at better rates than anywhere else in the game. PlayStation players will also get access to the Felix Felicis potion recipe which reveals gear chests on the mini-map for a whole in-game day.
The Haunted Hogsmeade Shop quest will be available to all PlayStation players, whereas the Felix Felicis potion recipe is a pre-order bonus on PS5 and PS4. But it’s been confirmed these items are only exclusive to PlayStation platforms for a period of one year.
After February 10, 2024 they could make their way onto Xbox, Switch and PC.

Now that we have a firm release date, Hogwarts Legacy pre-order details have been confirmed. It’s been announced that the game will be available in range of editions including a Deluxe, Digital Deluxe and Collector’s Edition.
The Hogwarts Legacy Deluxe Edition will be released across platforms and costs $80/£75 on PS5 and Xbox Series X, $70/£75 on PS4 and Xbox One and $70/£60 on PC and Nintendo Switch. It includes 72 hours early access to the game and the Dark Arts Pack. This DLC pack boasts an exclusive Dark Arts cosmetic set, a flying Thestral mount and access to the Dark Arts Battle Arena where you can test your mastery of the sinister side of magic against waves of challenging foes.
There will also be a Hogwarts Legacy Digital Deluxe Edition costing $80/£75 across platforms. It includes all the same extras as its physical counterpart, alongside the Dark Arts Garrison Hat and a cross-gen digital upgrade on PlayStation and Xbox.
The biggest Potter-heads will surely want to splash out for the Hogwarts Legacy Collector’s Edition. This ultra-premium version of the game will cost $289/£269 on PC and PS4/Xbox One, and an eye watering $300/£279 on PS5 and Xbox Series X.
The Collector’s Edition includes all the Deluxe Edition content mentioned above, as well as a physical life-size floating magic wand with a book base, a collectible steelbook case, and in-game Kelpie Robe.
Will Harry Potter feature in Hogwarts Legacy?

Hogwarts Legacy is set in the late 1800s, and Harry Potter was born on July 31, 1980, so don’t expect to be rubbing shoulders with the Boy Who Lived as you walk the halls of Hogwarts. That also means his best friends Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger are out of the picture as well.
Of course, time travel does exist in the Harry Potter universe, but the development team have answered this question with a firm “no” on the game’s own website, so don’t expect any time turners to feature.
Potter may be out, but that doesn’t mean there will be no familiar faces. Gryffindor house ghost Nearly Headless Nick will be floating about the castle, among other returning spectres (Peeves will no doubt be up to his usual mischief). There is also a possibility that a young Albus Dumbledore could make a cameo. The timeline of Hogwarts Legacy could crossover with when he was attending school after all.
Hogwarts Legacy controversies
Hogwarts Legacy has not been able to avoid the controversy that comes from the comments made by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling in regards to the transgender community.
The game’s website is keen to declare: «J.K. Rowling is not directly involved in the creation of the game.» But as a product of the Wizarding World, the ties are clear and unavoidable. This has lead to some gamers calling for a boycott of the game.
It’s not just fans that are unhappy either. According a Bloomberg report claims there is some discomfort within the development studio over the public stances taken by J.
K. Rowling. Another Bloomberg report states that gamers will be able to adjust the body type and voice of their character, to make the game more trans-inclusive as a sort of olive branch from the developers.
Hogwarts Legacy outlook
The Hogwarts Legacy reveal trailer is currently the most viewed video game trailer of all time on the PlayStation YouTube channel with a massive 30 million views . That alone indicates that gamers are very interested in this release.
Of course, this level of anticipation could result in unrealistic expectations and disappointment if the game doesn’t live up to its lofty ambitious. However, based on what we’ve seen so far, Hogwarts Legacy is looking like the Harry Potter RPG fans have waiting years to play. If only we could cast and spell and be in February 2023 already.

Hogwarts Legacy is very nearly here, though it has recently suffered another delay for certain versions of the game. New generation consoles and PC players are unaffected, and will be able to live out their ultimate Harry Potter dreams in a matter of weeks. Players are dropped into their fifth year of magic schooling, and can choose a House, visit Hogsmeade and more.
Now that we’re close to launch, developer Avalanche Games has pulled back the curtain on much of Hogwarts Legacy. So far, we’ve had two full gameplay showcases, as well as some short teasers offering glimpses as to what the story will have in store.
For Harry Potter fans, this is easily the deepest, and most expansive gaming experience set in the series yet. Hogwarts Legacy features a robust combat system based on spell dueling, as well as many secrets and puzzles hidden around the world.
While we are indeed very close to release, there’s still a few more details we’d like to know before getting our hands on the game. For now though, here’s everything we know about Hogwarts Legacy so far, including all of the latest news and rumors.

A Hogwarts Legacy release date has finally been revealed. It’s coming to Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, PS5, and PC on February 10, 2023.
Unfortunately, the Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game were recently delayed. These versions will now launch on April 4, 2023.
While a Nintendo Switch version is coming, too, on July 25, 2023.
When Hogwarts Legacy first leaked, Bloomberg reported that it would come to next-gen consoles in 2021. However, the start of 2021 saw an official delay to 2022, as publisher Portkey Games confirmed more time was needed to get the game in tip-top shape. In August 2022 this was pushed a little further forward to the current release date with the developer stating on Twitter that it needs «a little more time to deliver the best possible game experience.»

Gameplay showcase 2
On December 13, 2022, Avalanche showed off a second gameplay showcase for Hogwarts Legacy. In it, players were given a first look at unforgivable curses including Avada Kedavra.
The Dark Arts Battle Arena looks to be locked to the Deluxe Edition of the game, and allows players to test out spells early. Check out the showcase below for a look at broomstick flying and Hippogriff exploration.
Making the music
Towards the end of 2022, Hogwarts Legacy released a ‘Making the Music’ trailer. This shows how the music was created for the game. The team chats about striking a balance between new themes that evoke nostalgia for Potter fans, and how it incorporated it for the gameplay loop present in the game.

Dark Arts
A fresh trailer dropped during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022, giving us a look at the game’s darker side. Don’t expect to be spared any difficult choices as you encounter Dark Magic in Hogwarts Legacy.
ASMR magic
Ahead of Hogwarts Legacy’s appearance at Gamescom 2022, Avalanche Software released an ASMR video which features 4K footage of “a hot summer day” at various locations around the game world.
Next-Gen Immersion trailer
A new trailer from PlayStation is giving us some glimpses of Hogwarts Legacy in action while detailing all of the ways the game will take advantage of the PS5 hardware to increase player immersion. We’re talking DualSense support, 3D audio and 4K visuals.

Hogwarts Legacy is an RPG set in an immersive, open-world. Taking you to the wizarding world of the 1800s, Hogwarts Legacy is creating some distance between itself and the familiarity of the books and films but fans of the Harry Potter series have been assured that the game will be «firmly rooted in the Harry Potter universe».
The developer says it’s aiming to «chart new territory by creating fresh ways for fans to immerse themselves in the wizarding world».
There’s an original main story that runs through Hogwarts Legacy, just in case you were worried that the game would let you loose in the school with absolutely no adventure whatsoever.
According to a post on the PlayStation Blog , you will start at Hogwarts in your fifth year, coming to the school after surviving some kind of mysterious incident. Your character apparently has “ties to an ancient magic” which will “put you on a collision course with a goblin rebellion led by Ranrok, aided by his alliance with the Dark wizard Victor Rookwood, who both present formidable threats to the entire wizarding world.”
According to the post, Ranrok “has seen a glimmer of a magic that wizardkind tried to hide – even from themselves – and he wants that power in particular. His worldview is skewed by his hatred of wizards, which makes his alliance with Victor Rookwood particularly tenuous.
Once Ranrok gets what he wants, no one will be able to stop him and the wizarding world will be doomed.

As confirmed in an official FAQ for Hogwarts Legacy is an entirely single-player experience with no online or co-op modes.
With that focus on the single-player experience, the game appears to be all about crafting your own personal adventure in the wizarding world. It’s no surprise, then, that you’ll create your own character in a character creator that seems to allow for a fair bit of customization, based what we were shown in the Hogwarts Legacy gameplay reveal.
According to a report from Bloomberg , the character creator for the game will be trans-inclusive, with the report stating that sources “familiar with the game’s development” have revealed that the game will allow players to customize their character’s body type, voice and gender placement for school dormitories.
Once you’ve created your character and selected your house, there’ll be classes to catch up on and new friends to make.
To add an extra layer to the social aspect of the story, you’ll nurture those connections, with your magical new pals able to teach you abilities and act as companions on quests and adventures.
During school hours, you’ll be learning and casting spells and charms, brewing potions, and attending a host of classes so you can graduate alongside your classmates.
The new spells and abilities that you learn from your professors and fellow students will be useable in combat and in puzzles through the wider game world. The range of spells that you learn will allow for choice when it comes to combat styles. Players can, for example, go in “all wands-blazing” or cast a Disillusionment charm for a more stealthy approach. “Different techniques will be required to counter enemy strengths and weaknesses that should make every encounter feel engaging.”
The spells you learn won’t necessarily just be the nice kind, either. Like any talented Hogwarts student, you’ll face the temptation of powerful dark magic and unforgivable curses, with a trailer shown during Gamescom 2022 giving a taste of the difficult choices you’ll have to make.
In your down-time, you can explore the school, from iconic locations you’ve seen in the films to secret passageways that contain puzzles for you to solve. There’s even a few locations we’ve not seen in the movies, like the Hufflepuff common room.
On that note, if you’re worried about which House you’ll be sorted into, don’t be. You’ll be able to choose for yourself. The Hogwarts Legacy official website reveals that players can choose their House at the start of the game. Although we don’t know how the choice will be made, or whether houses will be able to be changed later on down the line.

Another feature that ties into your late start at Hogwarts is the Room of Requirement. Here you can grow plants for ingredients, brew potions, upgrade gear and more. You even have your own House Elf to do your bidding. To top that all off, you’ll have a menagerie where you can keep the various magical creatures you’ll run into throughout the course of the game.
See, you’re not just limited to Hogwarts in your travels; you’ll be able to visit the neighboring village of Hogsmeade, as well as a smattering of other hamlets speckled throughout the countryside. These locations are populated with NPCs and side quests you can dig into at your leisure, with dynamic seasons and climates to really bring them to life.
As far as visuals are concerned, on PS5 the game will run at 4K and you’ll be able to choose between Performance and Fidelity modes, with the former prioritizing frame rate while the latter leans into visual fidelity.
For audio, the game takes advantage of the console’s 3D audio capabilities, with the promise of “additional immersive sounds through the DualSense controller speaker, like the soft flap of a Hippogriff’s wings and effects of each spell you cast” for those not using headphones.
Finally, the PS5’s SSD should mean “quick loading times no matter how you choose to move from place to place, whether you take the scenic route on a broom or fast travel via the Floo Network.

Hogwarts Legacy editions and pre-order bonuses
Hogwarts Legacy is now available for pre-order and you have three editions to choose from: Standard, Deluxe and Collector.
Pre-order bonus
Before we dig into what each edition offers, it’s worth noting that all pre-orders come with an Onyx Hippogriff Mount, while those who pre-order on PlayStation will also get a Felix Felicis potion recipe.
Standard Edition
The Standard Edition is, well, pretty standard – you’ll get the base game and that’s it. Well, unless you’re buying the Standard Edition for a PlayStation console, in which case the developer has confirmed on Twitter that you’ll also get an exclusive quest.
Deluxe Edition
The Deluxe Edition offers a little more than the Standard Edition, as you’d expect given it’s more expensive. In the Deluxe Edition you’ll get:
- 72 hours early access
- The Dark Arts pack, which includes the Thestral Mount, the Dark Arts Battle Arena, the Dark Arts Cosmetic Set and the Dark Arts Garrison Hat
For those buying on PlayStation and Xbox, this version will include both the last and current-gen digital versions of the game.
PlayStation players will get that additional exclusive quest, too.
If you pick up the Standard Edition but decide you’d quite like that Dark Arts pack, the developer confirmed on Twitter that you’ll be given the chance to purchase it separately in-game, with this being the only item for purchase in-game.
Collector’s Edition
The Collector’s Edition is the most expensive option and in addition to coming with everything in both the Standard and Deluxe editions, it has:
- A life-size figurine of a floating magic wand with a book base
- A steel case
- Kelpie Robe (cosmetic DLC)

PlayStation exclusive content
Those who pick up the PlayStation version of Hogwarts Legacy will be getting some exclusive content, Avalanche Software has revealed.
In a Twitter thread, the official Hogwarts Legacy account revealed that “All PlayStation editions will come with the Exclusive Quest”, with no need to pre-order to get it.
Those who do pre-order on PlayStation, though, will also get the «Felix Felicis Potion Recipe». Hogwarts Legacy community manager, Chandler Wood, also used Twitter to clarify «PlayStation players get an exclusive quest, and PlayStation pre-orders get the Felix Felicis potion recipe”, adding there’ll be «more information on these soon.»
A peek at the UI?
Hogwarts Legacy fans have been looking closely at the gameplay revealed during the March Sony event and they might have caught a glimpse of the game’s UI in a brief few frames.
As posted to the HarryPotterGame subreddit , menu elements with what appear to be four equipped spells and potentially a mini map appear for only a few seconds. It’s highly likely that what’s shown is placeholder UI given the game is still in development.
However, we can maybe glean some of the spells that you’ll be able to use in the game from what’s shown. Based on the images in the UI, the spells equipped by the players appear to be Wingardium Leviosa, the levitation spell; Accio, the object retrieval spell; and Lumos, the light spell.
No microstransactions
It’s been confirmed by Avalanche Software that Hogwarts Legacy will not contain any microtransactions. This is stated explicitly in an FAQ for the game, which says “Hogwarts Legacy does not have in-game purchases or micro-transactions” but it has been re-iterated by Avalanche Software’s community manager, Chandler Wood, on Twitter.
“We’ve seen this question coming up and want to set the record straight,” Wood said. “There are no microtransactions in Hogwarts Legacy.”

On March 2, 2021, authoritative game insider Jason Schreier announced that Hogwarts Legacy will have the opportunity to create a transgender character — the developers anonymously told the journalist about this. Players will be given the opportunity to choose separately the voice of the character, body type and gender. The latter will be presented as a choice between the status of «wizard» and «witch» — this parameter will determine in which part of Hogwarts the protagonist will spend the night.
According to Schreier, gender-less customization will be added at the initiative of the developers themselves, who are unhappy with Rowling’s transphobic statements and related scandals that have affected the game.
