Gran turismo sport test: How to test drive cars in Gran Turismo Sport

Gran Turismo Sport – Destructoid

Developer Polyphony Digital is a group of perfectionists. Its attention to detail has led to the creation of some of the most detailed car models on the market. The realism presented in the Gran Turismo series is unmatched on consoles and each successive release has upped the ante in terms of the amount of cars and tracks available to the player.

While the more recent entries may have been too bloated for their own good, the first entry on PlayStation 4 sees Polyphony Digital strip back to the point that this feels like an entirely different series. This isn’t your father’s Gran Turismo and it probably won’t be one you’ll return to for very long.

Gran Turismo Sport marks a bold new direction for Sony’s flagship racing series. Instead of providing the extensive museum of cars and massive list of player options, Polyphony Digital has decided to pare back the focus of the game to become an official FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) representation of motorsport racing.

As such, GT Sport is an online-only title. If you want to make any progress in your career or collect any of the 162 cars available, you’ll need to be connected to the internet. Even the incredibly basic career mode requires a persistent connection per FIA guidelines. The reasoning behind this is to avoid any kind of cheating or unfair advantages while racing online, but it brings up so many questions about the odd requirement.

Since the career mode is, essentially, a glorified Driver’s Ed test, why Polyphony saw it fit to restrict that to an online connection is beyond me. You never race any other players during these tests, so what was the point? Even if you accept the provided answer, the career is so short and devoid of different challenges that it comes off feeling like an afterthought. If you hunker down and focus on each test, accepting a bronze just to coast by, you could be done with everything in roughly three hours with only better medals enticing you to return.

That isn’t to say the information isn’t useful. Before each test, you can load up a video tutorial (that requires a connection to YouTube) that will walk you through what each challenge requires and the information contained is pertinent to real-life driving. I doubt anyone reading this is actually training to become a NASCAR racer, but these are some thoroughly explained tests that are all curated to make you a better driver.

As I progressed through the career, I did notice my lap times decreasing and my overall understanding of the handling in GT Sport becoming better. I suppose the short length can be forgiven for that (since the game had a tangible impact on my abilities), but if you have no interest in online competition, the only thing you’ll gain from playing GT Sport is better driving skills with nowhere to use them.

Anyone without a persistent online connection can play the “Arcade” options available. These include things like time trials, single race options, a VR mode, and even a drift challenge mode, but without an online connection, you won’t be able to save your progress. All of those hard-fought lap times and money earned will be for naught.

To make things worse, arcade mode locks most of the courses out if you aren’t a specific driver level, so with no ability to save, you won’t even be able to race on most of the game’s courses. Even if you could use them all, GT Sport’s stripped-back approach sees only 28 courses being available with some having no alternate variations. Weather and time of day are also static, so some courses don’t even provide the option of mixing things up with rain or nightfall. This is not a game with a lot of content and there doesn’t seem to be any plans on adding more.

I find it hard to believe the FIA had such a big issue with Gran Turismo 6’s track editor that they demanded it be removed from any future entries. Having such a feature would definitely have extended the life of this game, but the FIA requirements mostly stifle the ability GT Sport has with making a connection with anyone. You can only race the same courses so many times before you’ve seen it all and without different routes or variations, the lack of content is going to catch up to most people quickly.

At least there is a livery editor, for once. You can customize each of the meticulously modeled cars to look as goofy or as professional as you want. In typical modern triple-A fashion, some options from the editor are missing at launch (like custom image uploading), but this feature finally brings Gran Turismo up to speed with its competition.

Being so focused on online competition, you’d think GT Sport would deliver without question. Sadly, this also seems like a half measure. Being FIA regulated, the online races are very realistic and have a level of competition that is hyper-professional. Before you can even enter into anything, you’ll have to watch a video that instructs you on the proper etiquette of racing and introduces you to the new “Safety Rating” system that GT Sport employs for online competition.

This “Safety Rating” is a measure of your ability to drive safely and avoid being a jackass. If you’re ramming other cars or trying to pull off stupid stunts on the track, your safety rating will go down and you’ll be matched with other less careful drivers. While the theory is sound, the implementation is incredibly flawed. For instance, someone rear ending your car results with you losing safety points, which makes no sense.

That then leads to making it incredibly difficult to regain your safety rating, since having other imbeciles bumping you all the time means you’ll barely make enough points to actually recover from genuine mistakes. I know real drivers aren’t bumping each other or slamming into walls all the time, but when stuff like that does happen, the game should have a better understanding of who initiated the incident to properly rate players.

With that out of the way, your only options in the game’s “Sport” mode are three daily races and a competition bracket. Since competitions won’t be live until November 4, you’ll be limited to daily races that go live every 20 minutes. What this means is you can only race about three times an hour, since each provided track has a countdown timer for signing up and requires you to put up a qualifying lap along with racing between four and six laps around the course.

I like the attention to realism, but this makes for some extremely limited pickings. A private lobby system does allow players to make up their own stipulations and select any track, but most people aren’t racing in these lobbies for it to really matter. A lot of the competition, in general, has dropped out of the sport mode, too. When I first started playing on release, I could easily find a 24-person room, but now I’m struggling to get more than 11 people in races. That might have to do with the botched safety rating (since I’m sitting at a C for some reason), but it is concerning for the longevity of GT Sport.

With all the gameplay and feature shortcomings, at least Gran Turismo Sport looks photorealistic. I thought Forza 7 was mindblowing, but certain aspects of GT Sport blow Turn 10’s production out of the water (even on the base PS4!). The shadow detail and dynamic lighting lend a sense of depth to each scene, but the car models, in particular, can pass for real life. This feeds into the game’s “Scapes” mode (which lets you pose the cars on top of real-life photos) very well, but my god is there so much detail packed into these vehicles.

That probably explains why there is such a small selection of cars, since each one has been remade from scratch, but I don’t feel that was a compromise worth taking. One of the joys of Gran Turismo’s past was amassing an army of cars to drive in literally any condition or style. GT Sport’s stripped-down approach sees the selection limited to only track vehicles and usually just four from each manufacturer. It lacks diversity, but it also just plain lacks substance.

I feel that is the best way to describe Gran Turismo Sport. The game has a razor-sharp focus on what it wants to deliver, but does so at the cost of diversity and content. I suppose quality should always be more important, but for $60, you’d figure GT Sport would at least be comparable to past entries in the series. This comes off feeling like a tech demo for what Polyphony wants to do with Gran Turismo more than a full game.

I could take the lack of content if the gameplay options gave me more to do. Seeing as how even the online modes have weird time limits or aren’t fully ready, Gran Turismo Sport is honestly not worth looking into at the moment. Maybe this will mature into a better racing game in the future (much like Driveclub), but you can presently get so much better on PS4 that I’m not sure why GT Sport wasn’t delayed to add some more content. The ulta realism isn’t enough to justify the cuts done to the core GT gameplay of the past.

Test Drive BMW 3 Series GT Grand Turismo

The BMW 3 Series is a very popular car. Despite the global trend for crossovers, it was the “three-ruble note” that, at the end of 2020, became the best-selling model of the Bavarian brand in the world. But the BMW 3 Series GT is a rarer beast. The car is seriously different in size, design and driving characteristics from the usual 3 series sedan. nine0003

The BMW GT 3 Series Grand Turismo (F34) was introduced in 2013. As planned, this liftback combines the spaciousness and practicality of a station wagon with the beauty and elegance of a coupe. The car is built on the basis of an elongated 3 series sedan for the Chinese market and does not share body panels with it, although it is generally stylistically similar.

Despite the interesting concept and unusual design, this «three-ruble note» did not become popular. Sales of this model in the world and in Russia were small and did not receive the heir to the BMW Grand Turismo 3 series. nine0003

What is unique about the BMW 3 Grand Turismo

On a test drive this time a truly unique car. In addition to the unusualness and rarity of the model itself, this particular BMW 3 Series Gran Turismo is the latest car sold new in Russia.

Purchase History, as often happens, spontaneous. Prior to this, the owner drove a BMW 1 series, which he moved from the Lada Kalina to. The owner liked the cars of the Bavarian brand, and in connection with the replenishment in the family, he wanted a more spacious car. And here in Moscow were seen the last two new 3 GT, brought to Russia. nine0003

Buying a car turned out to be almost a miracle, because there were a lot of people who wanted to buy it. The owner even looked at the dealer base — his car is really the last one sold in Russia. After that, there were no more deliveries, the model was discontinued.

The owner is generally satisfied with the machine. During the year of ownership, there were no technical problems. The only thing I had to change one of the foglights. Apparently, a stone hit her on the track. The “fog” itself flew deep into the front bumper, and the owner at first thought that it had simply been stolen. In the end, everything was replaced by insurance. nine0003

The owner also told me that there were cases of theft of sports M-steering wheels. As for reliability, overall reviews of the BMW 3 Series GT are positive. At the same time, our modification of the 320d Xdrive is considered almost the most successful of all.

What is left of the real “three-ruble note” here

Outwardly, the car turned out to be really interesting. And if the older BMW Grand Turismo 5 series looked heavy (some even called its appearance stronger words), then the appearance of the 3 GT turned out to be made lighter and sportier. Of course, in our case, the optional M-Sport styling package adds sportiness. nine0003

The 3 GT is actually a very large car. If you put the usual “troika” next to it, it will become clear that the dimensions of the “Grand Turismo” are much closer to the 5 series. It is almost 20 cm longer than the regular third-series sedan, slightly wider and taller than it. I especially like how the liftback looks from the side and back. There is also a very cool feature — a rising wing on the tailgate. And this happens not only automatically at high speed (to create better downforce): with the help of a separate button, you can raise it even in the parking lot and surprise others a little. It looks really impressive. nine0003

The black elements on the body also look very harmonious: edging around the windows, air ducts in the front fenders (this is not props, but a functional element that improves aerodynamics). In other versions, they can be chrome-plated.

Black rims complete the sporty three-ruble look.

The salon is made in a typical «beam» style. The front panel is unified, but there are two important points that distinguish the GT from the usual three-ruble note.

  • The first is a higher driving position. You sit really high. However, there are still nuances, this is not a crossover for you. The threshold is very wide, and you have to step over it. Getting out is also not very convenient, I almost always touched the threshold with my foot. There are no complaints about the sports chair itself, the landing is comfortable.
  • The second difference is a huge supply of free space in the back row. The wheelbase is as much as 11 cm longer than the usual three-ruble note. Sitting behind myself is comfortable even with my height (186 cm), the margin in front of my knees still remains. But getting out of the back row is also not very convenient, the threshold is still wide and the opening itself is narrowed. nine0008

The interior of the 3 GT is overall a pleasant experience. The materials are of high quality, plus we have a very beautiful color, and not just black or gray, as is often the case.

The multimedia screen is small, the dashboard is analog, with a small screen in the middle, and the handbrake is mechanical. Although, in principle, 3 GT come with a richer interior.

Another big difference is the trunk. Its volume is 520 / 1600 liters. This is even more than the station wagon of the third series! The finish is pleasant, there is an electric lid. A large stroller enters without any problems, this could be seen clearly. nine0003

There are a couple more interesting things about the trunk:

  • The lid that opens access to the underground is held on by a gas stop — this is the first time I’ve seen this.
  • In the underground itself you will not find a spare tire or a dokatka.

We can only hope for «impenetrable» Run Flat tires.

Does the 3 GT drive like a real BMW

Interesting metamorphoses have taken place with BMW in recent years. Many models began to tune more for comfort than for sport, turbocharged engines almost completely replaced the legendary atmospherics, and even front-wheel drive BMWs appeared. So with our «troika» a similar story happened. For the most part, it lives up to its title of a Gran Turismo car, that is, a car for comfortable and long trips. nine0003

And indeed, the car holds the road perfectly, it stands like a glove on the highway. In this regard, this is indeed a “real” BMW. But with the rest of the running impressions there are already nuances. For example, the handling that these «Bavarian» cars are usually famous for. If you drive in Sport mode, the steering is very precise and «heavy». But in the usual comfortable mode, it “relaxes”, the effort on it becomes less, a small void appears in the near-zero zone. And you can’t tie a sporty steering wheel setting to a comfortable driving mode. nine0003

Suspension feels closer to stiff, but there is no discomfort when driving over bumps. On a long journey, she will not shake the whole soul out of you. More frightening is the sound with which the car passes bumps.

Another plus, in contrast to the usual sedan of the third series, is the ground clearance. Ground clearance has been increased to an impressive 165 mm. This is already the level of some modern crossovers.

The diesel engine is sufficient in normal operation. This is a new B47 series motor for 190 forces and 400 Nm of torque. It seems that, according to the passport, the 3 GT seems fast — acceleration to 100 km / h is declared at the level of 7.7 seconds. But in reality, the diesel 3 GT cannot be called a truly fast car; after all, it is more tuned for a calm and smooth ride. But the fuel consumption will definitely please you. The onboard computer of our car showed a figure in the region of 7 liters per 100 km, and this is almost winter operation.

And one more thing to keep in mind when buying a 3 GT — soundproofing. Beautiful frameless doors do their job. The noise from them clearly penetrates the cabin, and with increasing speed it only increases. I don’t know if something can be done with these glasses and how much additional sound insulation will help here. nine0003

Also, these beautiful frameless windows can freeze in winter (this happened to the owner), and if the glass does not come off, it will be problematic to get into the salon. After all, when you take the door handle, they automatically fall down to open the door. In general, this is the case when you have to sacrifice something for the sake of beauty.

Is it worth buying 3 GT

As a result, the car turned out to be interesting and in many ways attractive. Compared to the usual three-ruble note, it is much more spacious, higher in seating position and ground clearance, and more tuned towards comfort. The car also has an interesting design, and since the number of such «three rubles» on the roads is minimal, the car stands out in the stream. But the Grand Turismo also costs more than the usual “troika”, and the sale of such cars is a multiple less (the share of GT in Russia is about 10% of the total number of “three rubles” sold).

This is an interesting choice for those who want roominess and comfort, good ground clearance and economy, but do not like crossovers. For myself, I would hardly take a BMW GT 3 series: I am not a big fan of this premium German brand. And if you really choose among the Bavarians model line, then I would look towards the X3 / X4 crossovers. Apparently, the big bosses at BMW were guided by such logic, because the 3 GT will not have a direct successor.

Test and review of the game Gran Turismo Sport | ichip.ru

Conclusion Chip

Gran Turismo Sport proved to be a spectacle of the highest standard during the test. Polyphony Digital’s technology is amazing, even if it’s limited to the racing sim genre. In addition, we are delighted with the artistry of the developers’ approach to creating graphics, which is close to art, and the feel of the controls on the racetracks. On the other hand, the game modes and the general semantic volume, especially in comparison with the games of competitors, disappoint us. nine0003

Plus and disadvantages

+ Incredibly beautiful graphics
+ Excellent «Driving» sensations
+ Big love for details
-no «careers» for offline fans full-fledged
More tracks would be appropriate

Gran Turismo Sport game test: that’s what we liked

With a lot of love for details and aesthetics that we rarely see in games, the developers want to immerse us in the charm of racing sports of all epochs even before the first independently completed circle: «Driving is for everyone» — this is the motto proclaimed here. Indeed, Gran Turismo Sport can, like Forza Motorsport 7 on the Xbox competitor, impress any racing fan and everyone who is able to hold a PS4 controller in their hands. nine0003

In terms of gameplay, the developers have completed the work completely. Depending on the preliminary level of knowledge and proximity to the genre of auto racing, for each race we choose a difficulty level that affects not only the ability of computer-controlled rivals, but also the reward after the finish. Through separate races in the «arcade» menu or within the «Driving School» mode, we can get acquainted with the controls, turn on or off the driving assistance or try out different vehicles. If we deactivate all driving assistance, the game quickly adds to the difficulty and racing cars, even without using the optional touch steering wheel, become incredibly realistic. nine0003

The fleet of about 160 cars is divided into the garage itself and the so-called «rental service», which we use for individual races. To get started, we got a Honda Civic Type R from the game for free. All other cars need to be earned by completing tasks and winning races in order to be able to pay off the collected «credits».

Gran Turismo Sport is especially amazing in terms of technology. Here, not only the intro boasts high quality performance, but the entire game on our test platform, PS4 Pro, looks insanely good. Everything is inspired by the love of detail that distinguishes the developers at Polyphony Digital. Each of the available cars, down to the smallest structural elements, has such a carefully designed appearance that in all the numerous scenes the graphics practically do not differ from the usual HD TV picture. nine0003

Extremely crisp textures, day-to-day lighting, HDR, and a steady 60fps on the Pro console leave us wide-eyed in amazement. Unfortunately, here we lack damage modeling and collision realism. The technological qualities are complemented by realistic voice acting of engines and a euphonious soundtrack during the races.

Gran Turismo Sport game test: Here’s what we liked less

The biggest criticism of Gran Turismo Sport is the «volume» of the game. Here we are talking about the fleet to a lesser extent — it has about 160 models and gives a decent degree of freedom. To a greater extent, this applies to game modes. In particular, the game does not include the «Career» mode, which is often perceived by offline gamers as an integral part of racing simulators. nine0003

Therefore, it is a pity that the developers abandoned this component. As a «substitute» are offered «Driving School» and missions that pose various tasks for us. However, at least some kind of “Story” is missing again. Together with arcade races, split-screen for two players and a limited VR experience, there is generally enough content for soloists and fans of couch «multiplayer» battle, but, of course, all these modes quickly become boring. nine0003

Sony’s benchmarks are quickly becoming clear here: online racing within the community that the publisher expects to form.
