God of War walkthrough for PC and PS4

God of War is really quite strangely structured. There are moments that are purely linear, areas that open up to give you a fair bit of choice on where to go next, and many, many places that you’ll need to return to a second time much later in the game when you have new abilities and powers.

As a result, our walkthrough here is exactly that: a walkthrough to the main story, in order, if you simply go from one objective to the next without branching off. We’ll note anything you can pick up along the way — a tucked away chest, collectible, or Shrine, say — but we won’t take you off down long and winding dead ends. You can explore them on a whim, or alternatively we’ll cycle back to cover all the optional areas once the main narrative walkthrough is complete.

In other words, for a story-specific walkthrough that covers all the main things you find along the way from start to finsh, this is right here is where to start:

God of War tips

God of War is a simple game: it’s about hitting things in the face. But even hitting things in the face can get tricky at times, so here’s a handful of good-to-know tips for your journey.

  • Don’t forget to stop attacking — Yes, sometimes it’s better to dodge and block. Actually, most of the time you should be doing this: you’re going to be frequently attacked by crowds of enemies, or big one’s who’s attacks you need to stick well clear of. All-out button-bashing attack isn’t really an option, so keeping on the move really is key. A well-timed dodge is perfect for setting up some counter attacks, too.
  • Vary your attacks — Just using your axe, or just using your fists, isn’t going to work out well. Some enemies are immune to certain attacks, whilst others will go down much faster if you mix it up than if you just whack away at them. Use the full range of what’s available to you.
  • Set up your runic abilities well — God of War’s abilities aren’t hugely distinctive, but on close inspecting you can set them up to cover a variety of situations. Having one that stuns or staggers enemies is good for buying breathing space. Another that does heavy area of effect damage helps clear them out. Switching them before boss fights is smart too — we equipped one that grants a burst of health that really made the difference in some battles.

  • Pay attention to the Beastiary book — It’s normally the sort of thing you can easily gloss over, but it actually contains some useful tips for tackling certain enemies — like freezing flying ones so that they can’t recover when you knock them up in the air for a combo.
  • Smash things into things — It feels great! But it’s good to do because it can one-hit-kill enemies that would normally take several. Knocking a frozen enemy into a wall with a kick (heavy attack whilst bare-fisted) will shatter it. Better yet, knock them into another enemy.
  • Smash things off of things — Similarly to the above, kicking enemies off of ledges is a very handy way to get rid of them. Even flying ones are dealt with if you freeze them with a heavy throw of your axe first.
  • Most puzzles are solved with your axe — Throwing your axe at something, throwing it at something whilst doing something else, throwing it at multiple things in one hit, or throwing it at one thing then moving somewhere else to recall it so it hits another thing are the main ways you solve puzzles. It sounds simple and inelegant, and it sort of is, but it can also yield some surprisingly complex solutions!
  • Atreus is actually useful — Your interactions with him may stick mostly to you shouting «Boy!», but Atreus is very handy for distracting, stunning, or otherwise bothering difficult enemies. Make use of his presence!

Watch on YouTube

  • Smash everything you see — There are pots (which reward a handful of Hacksilver, your main resource) dotted all over the place, but other smashable items can occasionally hide better treasure, healing orbs, or secrets.
  • Use Spartan Rage often, but wisely — Spartan Rage can be the difference between victory and defeat, but not using it until the end of a battle can mean only using it that one time, rather than mutliple times as it builds up during the fight. If there’s more than a couple of enemies, and you know more will follow, it’s normally worth popping it. By the end of the fight you’ll have built that rage bar up again for another use, anyway. He is a very angry God-man, after all!

Groa’s Secret Walkthrough (Chapter 4)

Quick Links

  • Groa’s Secret Intro
  • The Tower Of Light
  • Descend The Light Well

The fourth chapter of God of War Ragnarok, Groa’s Secret, follows Kratos on his journey through Alfheim. Having spent the previous chapter controlling Atreus, getting back into Kratos’ shoes is nice, especially due to his more impressive combat abilities.

RELATED: Beginner Tips For God Of War Ragnarok

Groa’s Secret kicks off with Kratos entering the Mystic Gateway after a brief chat with Ratatoskr. After this unusual encounter, a prompt appears advising the player to prepare well for the journey to Alfheim. The next part of God of War Ragnarok begins when Kratos enters the Mystic Gateway and emerges from the other side in the Strond.

Groa’s Secret Intro

The first thing the player should do after reaching the Strond is to have Kratos inspect the glowing Rune Read at the base of the statue. Like Sindri in the previous chapter, Tyr acts as a sort of guide for the beginning of Groa’s Secret, so following him is the only way forward.

Before progressing past the area after the crawl space, the player can find a Nornir Chest containing an Idunn Apple below the edge to the left. Idunn Apples increase Kratos’ maximum health, so collecting them can be extremely beneficial.

Kratos will spot the Tower of Light after he climbs the next few ledges. Moving on, he learns that a barricade is blocking the path. He must throw his Leviathan Axe at the Twilight Stone to the left to get through.

A group of Wretches attacks upon entering the next area, but like in previous chapters, they are easily vanquished. Jumping down to the lower ledge will lead to one of Kvasir’s Poems and a Legendary Chest containing Skadi’s Edge. Once the area has been fully looted, Kratos and his companions must climb the wall outside the barricade.

The next area introduces Light Elves, powerful foes capable of doing some serious harm. Avoiding their red attacks is key to surviving the battle, so it’s vital to keep a decent distance from them at all times.

Unlike previous enemies, they can parry oncoming attacks, so mashing the attack buttons won’t be as effective when facing them. Tapping L1 is the only way to halt their blue attacks.

The Tower Of Light

To move forward, Kratos and Tyr need to work to unlock the door to the Temple of Light. Once they are inside, a solid Light Door will prevent them from moving forward. Throwing the Leviathan Axe at the overhanging Twilight Stone, however, will grant access to the next room leading to the Lake of Souls. After searching the Red Coffin and moving to the next area, another group of Light Elves attack.

Tyr creates a path for Kratos and Atreus to follow, granting them access to the higher levels of the temple. Following Tyr will lead to another Light Door. Climbing up to the higher ledge will give Kratos a better angle at the Twilight Stone overhead while also leading him to another one of Kvasir’s Poems.

The next room is home to some slightly more powerful Light Elves who can throw projectiles. It’s easy to get overwhelmed here, so it’s vital to make use of Kratos’ shield.

The next Light Door requires Kratos to lower a Twilight Stone by using a crank, facing it toward the Light Door, and throwing the Leviathan Axe at it after letting it move upward one time. Nightmares attack in the next area, but they’re relatively easy to deal with. Another one of Kvasir’s Poems is inside the room to the left and should be picked up before leaving through the door in the right hallway.

Two Light Elf Warriors attack in the next room. They operate similarly to Light Elves, so defeating them isn’t that much harder. Dropping from the rooms to the North will reveal a hidden Red Coffin. Once the materials inside have been taken, Kratos will need to catch up with Tyr.

After defeating a group of Light Elf Mystics, Kratos and Tyr will create a bridge to the next area, in which lies a Nornir Chest containing Horns of Blood Mead next to a pathway that leads to another Red Coffin.

To bypass the next Light Door, Kratos will need to destroy some ancient architecture. Atreus’ Sonic Arrows are necessary for destroying parts of a statue, but Kratos must use his axe to remove the statue’s wings.

Then, the Blades of Chaos can be used to position the statue so it’s leaning to the left. Crossing back over to the adjacent hallway gives the player a good angle at the Twilight Stone.

Upon leaving the Tower of Light, Kratos will be faced with yet another Light Door puzzle, but this one’s quite simple. Atreus will need to use a Sonic Arrow to cut the Twilight Stone loose, then all that’s left is for Tyr to reposition it.

Descend The Light Well

Upon exiting the elevator, Kratos will need to get through a few more rooms before he finds what he came for. At the end of this area, Atreus reveals a secret doorway in which they learn that Groa lied to Odin about what Ragnarok was.

Once the scene ends, Sindri will show up to offer his services. The player will then need to battle their way down through the Temple of Light until they encounter Alva, an immensely powerful elf who doesn’t take kindly to Kratos’ intrusion. Before reaching ground level, the player should save the game, as the upcoming fight can be quite challenging.

RELATED: God Of War Ragnarok: How To Level Up

Surviving the battle against Alva requires the player to get familiar with blocking AOE attacks. Repeatedly tapping L1 will cause Kratos to smash his shield into the ground, preventing Alva from attacking while also staggering her for a moment. This is a reliable way to lower her defense.

It’s important to keep an eye out for her projectile attacks as they can easily deplete Kratos’ health if he gets hit by them. She can also use her blades to deal some heavy damage, but blocking them, then dodging her final attack will leave her vulnerable. She’s very quick, but her attack pattern is easy to memorize.

After the next cutscene, Kratos will set off toward the Mystic Gateway, but he gets ambushed by Dark Elves shortly after leaving the Tower of Light. Tyr clears a path forward after the battle ends, but there are plenty more Dark Elves standing between Kratos and his destination.

The player needs to follow Tyr after each battle to escape the pursuing elves. The party gets separated toward the end of the enemy rush, but Kratos will reunite with them after defeating the final hoard and scaling a nearby wall.

Having escaped the Dark Elves, the group can return to Sindri’s House through the Mystic Gateway to begin the next chapter.

Santa Monica Studio’s hotly anticipated action-adventure God of War Ragnarok is getting closer, with 9 gameplay and story leaks0013 spoilers for the game (they will be in this material) more and more. The situation has already been commented on by project producer Cory Barlog.

First, a gamer from China accessed God of War Ragnarok before release, completed the game (17.5 hours on low difficulty strictly according to the story), noted many «grand » moments, highly rated the product (by 9-9.5 points) and assured that he would definitely go to the second passage.

At the suggestion of a Chinese player, excerpts from God of War Ragnarok with a demonstration of a third weapon (Odin’s spear called Gungnir), a dog team and riding on trolls of the Spartan Kratos, as well as gameplay for his son Atreus (for a teenager they are allowed to play at certain stages) ).

Secondly, Brazilian YouTuber vgBR posted 12 minutes of God of War Ragnarok gameplay from around the middle of the walkthrough. The video has already been deleted, but the mirror has been preserved — the video contains the battle of Kratos with the great dragon Nidhogg, who lives at the roots of the world tree.

Thirdly, not very high-quality screenshots (see the gallery below) from the intro of Ragnarok and a complete recording of the battle with Thor, an excerpt from which was published earlier, appeared on the Web. From a 10-minute fragment (YouTube video is still working, but there is also a mirror), you can find out how the battle starts, how it goes, and how it ends.

As for Barlog, the producer complained about the appearance of spoilers for the game and apologized to the fans for this, and also reported that a certain retailer began selling God of War Ragnarok two weeks before the launch: «You know, right now I understand the point of having only one installer on the physical disk» .

God of War Ragnarok is set to premiere on PS4 and PS5 on November 9th. The last days before a game release is always one of the most exciting for developers, but in the case of the new adventure of Kratos and Atreus, for the wrong reason. «That’s not how we at [Santa Monica Studio] wanted things to go,» concluded Barlog.
