story «Ghostbusters» — Movies and series on DTF

Who you gonna call?

13915
views

When we think of the most famous sci-fi movies of the 80s, Ghostbusters is almost the first thing that comes to mind. A comedy about the adventures of former scientists who decided to hunt for ghosts has long been included in the golden fund of cinema.

We talk about the difficult path of the film to the screens and how the series feels today. nine0003

Ghosts and comedies as a way of life

The film Ghostbusters is inextricably linked to the American comedy show Saturday Night Live (or simply S.N.L.), which first aired in 1975.

According to S.N.L creator and producer Lorne Michaels, the writers wanted to reinvent the comedy genre. The show had no authority: the authors of the sketches often mimicked famous political figures, joked about society and world events.

In five years, the program has become one of the most popular television projects in the country. And the actors who participated in the constant filming became famous. One of these lucky ones was, for example, Bill Murray.

Bill Murray’s monologue in which he apologizes to the audience for his «failure» to joke

But the main role in the history of «Ghostbusters» was played by Dan Aykroyd — actor and screenwriter of Saturday Night Live.

It can be said that Ackroyd’s craving for everything otherworldly and paranormal is a family trait. His great-grandfather worked as a medium, his grandfather was a telephone engineer who studied ways to contact the dead by phone, and his father wrote a book about the history of ghosts. nine0003

In the early 1980s, while reading a parapsychology magazine, Aykroyd had the idea of capturing ghosts with special equipment. He thought it could be made into a movie, in the style of old otherworldly films like Spook Busters (1946) and Disney’s The Lonely Ghosts (1937).

The first version of the script was written very quickly. Initially, the main roles in the future film were intended for Aykroyd himself and his good friend from S.N.L. John Belushi. The plot told about hunters who traveled through time and parallel universes, where they caught ghosts with gadgets resembling magic wands. nine0003

But these plans were not destined to come true. John Belushi died in 1982 from a drug overdose. Aykroyd had to look for new people with whom he could bring his idea to life.

John Belushi

On the road to success

After Belushi’s death, Dan Aykroyd showed his half-finished script to Bill Murray and asked him to play the lead role. Murray agreed despite the fact that the film was in a very early stage of production. nine0003

Later, this fact surprised almost all members of the film crew: the actor was already known in those days for his tough and fickle temper. Murray could suddenly join the filming of the picture, but he could just as suddenly drop out of them.

Ghostbusters director Ivan Reitman admitted that while working with Murray on Meatballs (1979), he did not know if he could count on the actor’s participation until the very beginning of filming. To describe Bill’s style of work, Reitman uses the word «Muragan», comparing the actor to a destructive but memorable natural phenomenon. nine0003

Reitman himself seemed to Dan Aykroyd the most logical choice to direct the picture. In Hollywood, the director was known — after the success of the comedies «Meatballs» and «Reluctant Volunteers» — and he collaborated with Aykroyd while working on TV.

Reitman (left), Murray (center) and Ackroyd (right)

Reitman immediately insisted on a complete change in the main script. Fantasy about adventures in parallel universes demanded too much money, which no one at that time would have allocated. nine0003

But the most important thing that has changed is the setting. The new plot told about the events in modern New York, which was attacked by otherworldly forces.

If we show the real world from the very beginning, then it will be easier for the audience to believe in a huge marshmallow man.

Ivan Reitman, director

In the process of changing the script, Reitman had the idea to invite actor Harold Ramis, with whom he also worked during the filming of Meatballs, to the project. nine0003

Having briefly read the plot and listened to the plans for the future film, Ramis agreed. He not only played the role of the third hunter, but also had a hand in finalizing the script.

On the set of the film «Meatballs»

The next step was to find a studio that would finance it all. The team pitched the idea for the film to Frank Price, co-chairman of Columbia Pictures. At a meeting with him, Reitman also announced the approximate cost of the project: $25 million. nine0003

Price gave the film the green light, much to the displeasure of his Columbia bosses. They thought that 25 million was too much for a comedy. The stakes for Price were very high: in the event of a failure of the picture, he could well lose his place in the film studio.

Frank Price

The film premiered in the summer of 1984. The team had approximately 12 months to complete the script, filming and post-production. A difficult task, given that none of the participants had worked with blockbusters before. nine0003

Filming process

The main part of the script was reworked in two weeks. Aykroyd, Ramis, and Reitman worked around the clock, interrupted only for food and contact with their families. In Making Ghostbusters (1985), Ramis recalled that Aykroyd was better at coming up with funny storylines and giving advice on ghosts, and he was better at writing jokes and dialogue.

Bill Murray hardly took part in the work on the script, as he was busy shooting other films. Murray’s character — Peter Venkman — acquired all of his main features thanks to Aykroyd and Ramis. nine0003

I was always good at coming up with jokes for Bill because I knew some of the crazy things about him.

Harold Ramis, actor and screenwriter

Many ideas from the original script had to be removed or rewritten. So, the team planned to set up a storage facility for ghosts at a gas station located in a deserted area. And in the end, the headquarters of the hunters became the place of storage of the captured ghosts. nine0003

The authors also wanted to show the way of life of the captured ghosts inside the vault. Reitman rejected this idea so as not to shock the audience — many deceased celebrities appeared in the scene.

According to the original script, the hunter’s car could fly and become invisible, and its color was black. All these developments were later abandoned. It was decided to repaint the car itself in white — so it looked better in night scenes.

Another problem occurred while revising the script. The film needed a lot of special effects, but all the major companies were busy with other films coming out — Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, as well as Star Wars: Return of the Jedi. nine0003

A solution was found: Reitman offered to create his own studio for the production of special effects. He contacted Richard Edlund, who had previously received several Oscars for special effects for two episodes of Star Wars, and asked him to head the new studio. The interests of the parties converged: Edland just wanted to start his own business.

Columbia Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, which needed effects for 2010, agreed to fund a new company called Boss Film Studios. Subsequently, the studio was noted for its work on many famous films (Alien 3, Batman Returns), but closed at 1997 year.

After resolving the issue with the studio, the film crew started looking for designers and artists. According to Reitman, they faced a difficult task — «to work on the appearance of ghosts that have not yet been invented. »

At the beginning of August 1983, work on the script was almost completed, it was time for the casting. All the main actors (Murray, Aykroyd, Ramis) were already approved, so it remained only to find the performers of secondary roles.

Dana Barrett, Peter Venkman’s romantic interest, caught the attention of Sigourney Weaver. After playing Ellen Ripley in Alien, the actress wanted to try her hand at comedy. nine0003

During the audition, Weaver decided to impress Reitman by playing a demon-possessed dog. The actress growled, barked and jumped around the room. This performance not only brought her the role, but influenced the script, in which the episode of Dana’s transformation from a huge evil dog appeared. Weaver also offered to change Dana’s profession: from a model, the heroine turned into a musician.

The role of the fourth hunter named Winston went to Ernie Hudson. The actor went through several auditions and after them he waited a month for a decision. There were rumors that Eddie Murphy was considered the main contender for the role of Winston, but Reitman denies this. nine0003

Hudson’s character originally appeared at the very beginning of the story. He had a detailed biography of a subversive Air Force expert. However, on the eve of the start of filming, the actor received a new script in which the part of his hero was greatly curtailed. Winston appeared only in the second half of the film and uttered several phrases throughout the whole picture. According to Reitman, the studio decided to give more screen time to Bill Murray’s character.

For Hudson, this was very sad news: he was raising a child alone and hoped that this role would help his career. The actor does not hold any grudge against any of the project participants, but regrets the missed opportunity to play a truly significant character for the team. nine0003

The character of the funny geek Louis Talley also did not immediately find his performer. The role was written specifically for John Candy, but he did not agree to participate in the film. After that, Reitman was contacted by Rick Moranis, who was auditioning, and said: “Thank God, Candy refused to participate! It’s the coolest script I’ve ever read.» He brilliantly reincarnated as Dana Barrett’s strange neighbor — now it’s hard to imagine anyone else in this role.

Filming of «Ghostbusters» took place from October 1983 years to February 1984 in New York. Unexpected problems on the site, as a rule, did not arise. But one case is still worth mentioning.

It turned out that in the mid-70s, one of the American channels aired the children’s Saturday show The Ghost Busters. All this threatened legal problems for the authors of the film. The film crew even considered changing the name of the picture: among the options were Ghoststoppers or Ghostbreakers. Fortunately, lawyers quickly resolved all problems.

nine0002 Only three months were allocated for post-production, and eight weeks before the premiere, the director asked for about a hundred more shots with special effects. The specialists were engaged in graphics literally day and night, but all the work was completed on time.

Release and sequel

Feedback from Columbia employees after test screenings was not the most flattering No one in the studio, except for Frank Price, did not believe in the success of comedy fiction about the adventures of a company of scientists. nine0003

Against all odds, the film immediately set several local Columbia box office records: opening weekend (13.5 million) and first week (23 million). In the second week, everything was even better: the box office of the picture did not decrease, as is usually the case, but increased by about ten percent — the film collected 25 million.

The total rental figures in the United States amounted to approximately 240 million, and abroad the film got another 50 million — a huge result for that time. Especially since it’s a comedy. In the annual standings, the film was even ahead of «Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom», although it was shown on fewer screens. nine0003

Dan Aykroyd became the first member of his family to turn a ghost craze into a multi-million dollar franchise.

The question of filming a sequel was only decided in 1987, after the success of the animated series The Real Ghostbusters. All the main actors returned to their roles. Aykroyd and Ramis have been writing the script for the film for over a year.

However, as often happens, the second part failed to produce the same effect as the original. The fees were modest: worldwide, the sequel earned only 215 million dollars. But it is unlikely that Ghostbusters II will ever be forgotten. At least because of the villain Vigo — for many viewers, he has become one of the main fears of childhood. nine0003

Significance for the film industry

The authors of «Ghostbusters», without expecting it, invented the genre of «summer blockbuster» — that is, a film that has special effects, humor, bright characters. If now almost all blockbusters use this formula (at least representatives of the Marvel Cinematic Universe), then for the 80s it was a real breakthrough.

Ghostbusters can be divided into several genres at once: comedy, blockbuster, romantic story, horror. Everyone liked the picture, because there was an element in it for any, even the most fastidious, viewer. nine0003

Reitman and company seem to say: «We have a little over an hour and a half, let’s show as many events as possible.» In the first 20 minutes of the running time, the hunters manage to lose their jobs, find a new one, and meet the ghosts for the first time.

The viewer quickly recognizes all the necessary background of the characters, their character traits and begins to empathize with them. And all this is accompanied by great humor, which has not become outdated in 33 years.

Another important achievement of the film: thanks to him, actors from television finally got a chance to get into Hollywood. Many TV stars starred in big movies even before the success of The Hunters (the same Bill Murray), but it never happened that one of them played a major role in a blockbuster. The already well-known Murray, Aykroyd and Ramis instantly became first-tier movie stars. Just like their characters at the end of the movie. nine0003

The wall between television and big cinema finally disappeared only in the 21st century, but it would be wrong to forget about the contribution of the Ghostbusters.

Third part rumors and

reboot

If you set out to read and document all the rumors about the third part of «Ghostbusters», you can write a whole book. So let’s confine ourselves to a little chronicle.

Rumors that Dan Aykroyd is working on a script for a new movie in the universe appeared at the end of 90’s. On the Internet, you can find the alleged names of the triquel: Ghostbusters III: Hellbent or Ghostbusters go to Hell. Apparently, Aykroyd really wanted to make his lifelong dream of a movie in a parallel world come true.

In 2004, it became known that Bill Murray was the only one of the leading actors who did not want to participate in the filming of the triquel. Over the next five years, plot details and the name of the lead actor flashed in the press. As conceived by Aykroyd and Ramis, Ben Stiller was to become the leader of a new team of hunters, who were assisted by the original team. But things didn’t go beyond talk. nine0003

Ben Stiller

The film was talked about again in 2010, after the success of the game of the same name. There was also a possible date for the start of filming — 2012. Unfortunately, nothing of the sort happened.

In February 2012, Aykroyd revealed that he doubted the film would ever be made. True, in July of the same year he announced that he was working on a new version of the script, in which Murray’s character would not be. The triquel was directed by Ivan Reitman all these years. nine0003

He’s a very good friend and I respect him, but Bill just doesn’t want to play the character one more time. If he suddenly changes his mind, then in the film there will always be a place for Peter Venkman.

Dan Aykroyd, actor and screenwriter

After the death of Harold Ramis in February 2014, it became clear that the audience will probably never see a full-fledged continuation. Around the same time, Reitman refused to make a third film, as he did not see the point in it without the participation of Ramis. However, he remained in the position of producer of the future picture. nine0003

In the summer of 2014, Sony, which owns the rights to Ghostbusters, found a director for the film — comedy director Paul Fig. Immediately it became known that the new part will be a «female reboot» of the franchise. Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones were cast in the lead roles.

Bill Murray and Dan Aykroyd were enthusiastic about the idea of a female reimagining of the original, but Ernie Hudson bluntly stated: «A film like this is not what fans want to see.» nine0003

Critics and viewers are divided about the reboot. If the professional press gave the film moderate ratings (the average score on Metacritic is 60), then the fans were left disappointed. Audience ratings are mostly negative (average score on Metacritic is 2.9).

Unfortunately, Paul Feig and the crew didn’t get the humor and genius of the first film, so they traded the witty dialogue between the characters for cheap toilet jokes. Everything else in the film was also just disgusting: the performance of the main actresses, the useless character of Chris Hemsworth, as well as inappropriate references to the original film, including cameos by Murray, Aykroyd and Hudson. nine0003

The restart failed at the box office, so we most likely will not see its continuation. However, Ivan Reitman has confirmed that several Ghostbusters franchise projects are in the works. One of them is an animated cartoon in the universe, the main characters of which are ghosts. The second is the animated series Ghostbusters: Ecto Force, announced in 2016. But there is still almost no information about him. Perhaps the news should be expected in 2019, when the original film turns 35 years old. nine0003

Franchise Games

The very first game based on the original movie is Ghostbusters from 1984 released by Activision for the Atari 2600, Sega Master System, and NES. And she’s not exactly what you’d expect from Ghostbusters.

A Ghostbusters player becomes the owner of a ghost hunting business, after which he receives a personal bank account. The main task is to earn ten thousand dollars before the ghost activity bar fills up. If that happens, the Marshmallow Man will come and destroy the city. nine0003

The player points to a point on the map, the car drives there, the characters catch the ghosts and get a reward. In the game, you can buy more expensive equipment for the car and the hunters themselves.

If you watch the videos, you can see how well the title theme of the film is processed in Ghostbusters, which plays almost constantly. At some points, automatically synthesized computer speech is also used — an innovation for those times.

In 1987, The Real Ghostbusters, based on the cartoon of the same name, was released on arcade machines. And although the game looked good and was dynamic, it did not have a uniqueness. The Real Ghostbusters is like dozens of action games of that era. nine0003

The Real Ghostbusters

In Japan, The Real Ghostbusters was released under the name Meikyū Hunter G — there was no mention of hunters in it. Despite this, the difference between the two seemingly different games is hard to find.

Meikyū Hunter G

There are many versions of the game based on the second film, and all of them are significantly different from each other. One was released only for computers, another for the NES console, the third was sold only in Europe, and the fourth was exclusive to the Atari 2600. New Ghostbusters 2 stands out from the list, in which you can play as the character Louis Tully. nine0003

New Ghostbusters 2

In 1990, a game version of Ghostbusters was released for the Sega Mega Drive. It is not related to previous Activision games. Genre — platformer in which you need to constantly shoot. The game has many types of ghosts and weapons to fight them. Ghostbusters tells an original story that includes movie references. The player can choose one of three main characters: Winston is not in the game.

At the very beginning of the 2000s, three games were released with the title Extreme Ghostbusters, referring to the animated series 1997 years. All of them appeared on different platforms: from the Game Boy Color to the original PlayStation. The genres of the games also varied.

One, for example, looked like a shooting gallery in the first person.

And the other one was a pretty platform game.

There have been a lot of Ghostbusters games in 20 years, but only the biggest fans of retro gaming remember them. At the very least, all of these adaptations differ from Ghostbusters in 2009, the only game that attracted the attention of a wide audience upon release. nine0003

Ghostbusters from Terminal Reality is perhaps the closest thing we have to a «third movie». Aykroyd, Ramis, Hudson and even Murray participated in the work on the game. The main characters look and speak exactly like in the movie. Other game aspects — locations, items, humor, soundtrack — also evoke pleasant memories from childhood.

In the center of the new story is the player, who controls the character nicknamed «newbie». It sounds hackneyed, but the game allowed the main thing: to feel what it’s like to be next to those same hunters. nine0003

Ghostbusters from 2009 works great as an interactive tour of iconic movie locations. The gameplay is based on the usual TPS with automatic health regeneration. Only instead of machine guns and shotguns, you need to shoot from those same blasters.

At its core, 2009’s Ghostbusters is a game for fans from fellow enthusiasts who have been given the opportunity to contribute to the legacy of their childhood favorite movie. If you like Ghostbusters, then there is no reason to miss the game. They probably won’t do anything better with the original characters. nine0003

After the relative success of Ghostbusters (more than a million copies sold), there were no notable games in the franchise.

We can remember the unsuccessful Ghostbusters: Sanctum of Slime from 2011 and the mobile Ghostbusters Pinball from 2014. The film’s characters and locations could also be seen in Lego Dimensions.

In October 2018, the mobile Ghostbusters World was released — a variation of Pokemon Go with the ability to catch ghosts. But no one seemed to know about her release. nine0003

Cartoons

The Real Ghostbusters is the first TV show in the franchise. It aired on ABC on September 13, 1986 and stayed there until 1991. Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis took part in its creation. There were seven seasons in total, consisting of 140 episodes.

The word «real» was added to the name for a reason. Remember when the first film got into legal trouble with the name Ghostbusters? Then the issue was resolved by paying the Filmation studio (authors of the children’s show 1975 years) 500 thousand dollars.

The problem came up again while working on the animated series: Filmation also decided to make a cartoon adaptation of their old show. To avoid further problems, Columbia expanded the title to The Real Ghostbusters.

The main characters of the cartoon are the same Ghostbusters from the movie, but with slightly changed images. In each episode, they encountered new ghosts and caught them.

A fifth member has been added to the company — the famous green ghost nicknamed Lizun. The character became so popular that starting with the third season, the show was renamed Slimer and the Real Ghostbusters. This influenced the structure of the show: after the regular episode, a separate episode about a friendly ghost began. nine0003

In 1997, the continuation of the animated series called «Extreme Ghostbusters» was released, consisting of 40 episodes.

The action took place several years after the first cartoon. The lack of paranormal activity in the city triggered the bankruptcy of the firm and the disintegration of the hunting team. One Egon Spangler lives at the headquarters — he monitors the repository of ghosts, takes care of Slimer and teaches at the college.

As the ghosts begin to reappear, Egon gathers a new team of hunters. They are four students: Eduardo, Kylie, Garrett and Roland. Lizun helps them. nine0003

«Extreme Ghostbusters» seemed a little darker compared to the first animated series. Heroes did not always find a common language, and sometimes came into conflict with politicians.

The authors of the show tried to talk to their audience on serious topics. One of the new team members, Garrett, was in a wheelchair. But that didn’t stop him from enjoying life. With his enthusiasm for the job, he was reminiscent of Ray from the original cast. The animated series lasted only one season on the air, after which it was closed due to low ratings. nine0003

Comics

The very first comic book franchise was a spin-off of the animated series The Real Ghostbusters. Publication rights were shared between NOW (North America) and Marvel (Europe).

Comic book began in March 1988. In Europe, new comics were released weekly, while in North America they were released monthly.

The comics from the publishers were different, but sometimes the companies reprinted each other’s stories. The NOW series includes 32 issues of the main line, and from Marvel — 193. Slime also got his little mini-series.

The drawing style of both episodes completely copies the animated series. The images of the characters, respectively, are also borrowed from there.

The publication of both parallel series ended in 1992, almost simultaneously with the end of the show.

In 2004, the comic book publishing rights were taken over by a small company called 88MPH Studios. She released only a small series of four issues called Ghostbusters: Legion. The release of a full-fledged ongoing did not take place for financial reasons. nine0003

Legion was set after the end of the first film, but was moved from 1984 to 2004. The images of the characters coincided with the film version. The comic itself is made in a realistic manner and looks much darker than the previous series.

In 2008, Ghostbusters comics were published by IDW. The company produced both one-shots and full-fledged ongoings. It can be said that IDW created an entire Ghostbusters multiverse: on the pages of their comics, the original team met not only with their alternate versions from the animated series, but also, for example, with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. nine0003

In March 2018, the publisher began a large-scale crossover, which was attended by every hunting team that has ever existed. Even the women’s team from the restart two years ago.

After getting acquainted with the history of the franchise, it becomes a little sad. The iconic film of the 80s received a bad remake, battered the interest of the mass audience in the franchise and, perhaps, put an end to it.

On the other hand, «Ghostbusters» will still remain for all of us funny and at the same time scary films from childhood. And reboot with unsuccessful games will not spoil this. The team of Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spangler and Winston Zeddmore will always be outside of time and space. nine0003

It is unlikely that today there is at least one movie fan who has not watched one of the brightest Hollywood ghost hunting films of the 1980s. The witty and kind fantasy comedy by Ivan Reitman, created thanks to the comic genius of Dan Aykroyd, became a real hit in its time. nine0300 And today, more than 25 years after the premiere, «Ghostbusters» looks absolutely special, they are aloof from any criticism, because such films are the glory of the golden fund of Hollywood cinema.

Dan Aykroyd.

The first version of the screenplay for Ghostbusters was written in the early 1980s by Dan Aykroyd, who at that time had gained incredible popularity thanks to his participation in various comedy television shows and filming in comedy films (at 19In 1983, the film Trading Places was released with the participation of the actor, and even earlier, the musical comedy by John Landis, The Blues Brothers, was released.

In those years, Aykroyd was fond of paranormal phenomena and showed a keen interest in everything that was connected with this subject. It was from this hobby that the idea was born to stage a comedy about people who hunt ghosts.

In the very first version of the script, the whole story was built around smart time-traveling scientists who jumped into the future, then into the past to save people from dangerous monsters from the other world. Their ambulance was powered by ectoplasm and could fly. nine0002 Dan Aykroyd also came up with the basic equipment for catching ghosts — a shoulder-mounted nuclear reactor for a proton emitter that shoots a bright writhing beam (the one that, like a lasso, grabbed ghosts), and a positron pit trap (a trap that sucks a ghost inside). Dan copied the hunters and their equipment from real-life ghost hunters in old England — they drove a black ambulance and wore overalls.

Aykroyd wrote the main roles in the future film for himself and his partner in the film «The Blues Brothers» John Belushi (older brother of James Belushi). The script was called «Ghost Busters», Aykroyd showed his work to various producers, but no one showed much interest in them. nine0003

After some time, producer and director Ivan Reitman became interested in the idea of Aykroyd, who advised the comedian to rework the script. Reitman suggested ditching the various spaceship and time travel scenes that were too costly. At this point Aykroyd was joined by screenwriter Harold Ramis, who had worked with Ivan Reitman on Meatballs (1979) and Reluctant Volunteers (1981). Together they managed to completely rework the material and turn Aykroyd’s idea into a brilliant comedy script for the upcoming Ghostbusters movie. nine0300

«24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Any job we can handle, any price you can afford.»

As planned by the writers, four scientists, having met with «guests» from the other world, decided to organize their own business and engage in ghost hunting, and all the action was transferred to the present. On Reitman’s advice, the hunters’ car, called «ECTO-1», stopped flying and refueled with regular gasoline, and his role in the film was played by a 1959 Cadillac Miller Meteor. nine0305 «ESTO-1»

Also during the filming, Reitman decided to abandon the black color of the car, since the action of many scenes unfolded at night, which made it difficult to distinguish the car in the frame.

The main roles in the film were to be played by John Belushi, Eddie Murphy, John Candy and Dan Aykroyd himself, it was under them that the images of the main characters were created. However, Belushi died of a drug overdose before filming began, and Eddie Murphy and John Candy decided for their own reasons to refuse to participate in the project, after which Aykroyd and Ramis were forced to rewrite the script again. nine0300

Rick Moranis and director Ivan Reitman.

Many candidates were considered for the main roles, only Chevy Chase, Michael Keaton and Steve Guttenberg could play the role of Dr. Peter Venkman, and Christopher Walken, Jeff Goldblum and Christopher Lloyd were considered for the role of Egon, but all these actors for different reasons for participating in the filming » The Ghostbusters were never accepted.

Bill Murray.

On the other hand, Bill Murray, who got the role of Peter Venkman, showed interest in the script, the actor got used to the character so successfully that on the set he constantly made the entire crew laugh over and over again giving out a portion of jokes or another improvisation, many of which ended up in the film . nine0002 Harold Ramis did not want to act in films, he helped Aykroyd write the script, but when the star actors who auditioned for the role of Egon could not get the right image, Ramis, who was ideal for her, agreed to play Egon on his own.

Harold Ramis.

The remaining roles went to Rick Moranis, who had previously also assisted Aykroyd and Ramis with the script, Sigourney Weaver as Dana Barrett, and Ernie Hudson as the fourth hunter named Winston Zeddmore. nine0305 Ernie Hudson

Filming of Ghostbusters began in October 1983 and ended in February 1984, and on June 7 of the same year the film premiered in California. Due to the desire of the studio bosses to launch the picture as soon as possible, a “raw” version of the film was released, which was later finalized, but this did not prevent the incredible success of The Hunters.

Shooting of the film «Ghostbusters».

The film paid back almost 8 times the money spent, earned rave reviews from critics, and the next year was even nominated for two Oscars — for best visual effects and best song of the year «Ghostbusters» written by Ray Parker. Interestingly, this song topped the Billboard charts for several weeks. nine0300 The release of the film «Ghostbusters» was accompanied by a powerful advertising campaign. Director Ivan Reitman came up with the idea to shoot a special video advertising the services of hunters, while the video showed a real telephone number. People who called the number could therefore hear a special address from Dan Ackroyd and Bill Murray.

«…Gozer? Good evening. As the official representative of the city, county and state of New York, I order you immediately
to stop supernatural activity and go to where you came from or another convenient parallel dimension.» nine0307

Two literary versions of the film have also been published. The first, released around the same time as the Ghostbusters movie, was written by Larry Milne and was 191 pages long. The novel was written in the present tense and contained behind-the-scenes scenes involving the characters, as well as a more complete description of the film’s ending. The second piece was written by Richard Muller. The book was published in 1985.

Ivan Reitman, Bill Murray, Harold Ramis and Sigourney Weaver. nine0307

Based on the film «Ghostbusters», an animated series was created (a total of seven seasons was released), telling about the further adventures of scientists, all the main characters of the first film were involved in it. Based on the cartoon, three comic book series were released.

In 1989, the long-awaited return of the hunters came out, the script for the sequel was written by Aykroyd and Ramis, and the film was again directed by Ivan Reitman.

30 years later…

Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ivan Reitman managed to create a film that spawned numerous sequels and imitations. «Ghostbusters» has become, perhaps, the best representatives of the fantastic comedy genre, a film on which more than one generation of viewers has grown up. The role of Peter Venkman has become one of the most memorable performances in Bill Murray’s brilliant career.
