Future Soldier DOES Feature Local Split Screen Co-op

By
Rob Keyes

While the story campaign of ‘Ghost Recon: Future Soldier’ can be played cooperatively online with four players, fans can also enjoy local split screen co-op play with the game’s new Guerrilla horde mode.

When we went to Ubisoft San Francisco in January to preview the story campaign of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, we were happy to see the repeatedly delayed Tom Clancy game in action, bringing back the franchise’s trademark four player co-op. We were disappointed however, that unlike the Advanced Warfighter games on the current-gen consoles and Ghost Recon 2/Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike on the last-gen consoles, Future Soldier did not support split screen local play.

In order to enjoy co-op locally, fans would need four TVs, four copies of the game and four consoles. As we learned in our multiplayer preview of the game’s new Guerrilla multiplayer mode, it turns out that Ghost Recon: Future Soldier does support split screen play after all!

In the second part of our hands-on experience with the upcoming, further-in-the-future Ghost Recon game, we got to again play the campaign, this time with three allies. As we know, the standard campaign can only played cooperatively either online or system linked with one person per console. Before that however, we played the Guerrilla mode, a new multiplayer feature debuting for the franchise with Ghost Recon: Future Soldier which offers Ubisoft’s unique take on the popular horde-style mode introduced with Gears of War 2 and implemented in a growing number of titles, including the most recent Mass Effect 3.

Unlike those other survival style co-op games, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier keeps players on the move, forcing the squad to change their defensive position at the end of each set of 10 waves (up to 50 in total), while at the same time requiring players ensure that no enemy creeps into their base. Because of this and the nature of Ghost Recon being more tactical, less run and gun, there’s an inherent need for coordination and synchronization between teammates, something that Ubisoft feels is designed for friends playing locally.

For that reason, online matchmaking is their for campaign co-op and competitive multiplayer, and the horde-style Guerrilla mode is there for fans to play locally, as they may have done so with the last four core installments in the Ghost Recon series. Guerrilla mode lets up to two players play split screen, while also system linked. So, four players, two consoles and two screens, like Gears of War 3.

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier releases May 22, 2012 in North America, and May 24, 2012 in Europe, for the PS3 and Xbox 360. A PC version will follow at a later date.

Wildlands how to make split screen local co-op

Bolivia. A beautiful South American country that is famous not for its lush vegetation and picturesque rural landscapes, but for being the world’s largest producer of cocaine. What is your mission? Stop the activities of the evil Santa Blanca drug cartel before it becomes a global threat.

This is exactly the kind of game where victory or defeat is determined by a strong team of real friends, and not by buggy artificial intelligence. That is why Ghost Recon Wildlands with split screen or online multiplayer will come in very handy.

With split screen co-op, you can play with your friends from the comfort of your couch, and you don’t have to worry about a reliable internet connection or Tom Clancys multiplayer servers as everything happens on your console. This is how interesting joint offline PS4 sleepovers or any offline multiplayer events are built.

Does Ghost Recon Wildlands support split screen?

While Ghost Recon Wildlands multiplayer is available, you will need a strong internet connection to connect to online servers where you can team up with up to four players.

The fact that Ghost Recon Wildlands doesn’t have local multiplayer on the split-screen couch is in line with popular video game trends that are addicted to online multiplayer. Online multiplayer not only gives developers the ability to spy on players and detect game cheats, but also catch them. This is exactly what Overwatchs Blizzard Entertainment did by identifying and blocking a large number of users using game cheats.

Traditional co-op or split-screen games can be either local on a single PC or console, via LAN Play or System Link, or hybrid, combining local and online play. Ghost Recon: Wildlands will not have any of these features.

Let’s briefly talk about Ghost Recon Wildlands co op, 2 player split screen and multiplayer.

1. Does Ghost Recon Wildlands have local co-op?

No. Ubisoft has not built any form of local co-op play into the game. So far, there is no form of multiplayer offline campaign in the game. You must always be connected to the Wildlands server in order to play with or against real people.

2. Does Ghost Recon Wildlands have a split screen?

Since there is no local co-op in the game, the answer to this question is almost natural. Ghost Recon Wildlands does not have PS4 split screen, Xbox One split screen, or PC. You will not be able to split the screen even when playing the online multiplayer campaign.

3. How to play multiplayer campaigns in Ghost Recon Wildlands?

At the moment, looking for how to split the screen in Ghost Recon Wildlands is a waste of time. It is possible that this feature will appear later as DLC or a fan mod, but this is unlikely.

You will be satisfied with the online co-op game, in which up to 4 players can participate. Online co-op features a full campaign mode and the ability to jump in and out of the game at will.

  • Local co-op: Not supported
  • Online co-op: Up to 4 players
  • Combo co-op (local and online players): Not supported
  • LAN Play or System Link: Not supported

Why should you worry about setting up a local split screen?

AI is not reliable in Wildlands. You will need real people with whom you can perform complex maneuvers. The advantage of local multiplayer is that you can yell at your squad and even continue the game offline.

Ghost Recon Wildlands replaces the lack of split screen functionality with a robust multiplayer scene that lets you choose who wants to join your game and prevent others from joining. You can still play with random people on those random days. A snag? All members of your squad must purchase the game and have a strong internet connection.

Ubisoft has apologized to the players for the error in the description of Ghost Recon: Future Soldier

Ubisoft has apologized for the error in its distributor listings, including its own UbiShop. As I found out, on many sites it was erroneously indicated in the game that there was a split-screen multiplayer mode Ghost Recon: Future Soldier .

« We are aware of outdated information on the UbiShop website and other resellers that incorrectly lists split-screen and co-op in Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. We have made sure that the information is now updated on all sites where error has crept in,” a Ubisoft representative writes on the game’s forums.
