NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 video card review

Video cards costing $100-150 are traditionally the most popular. Devices in this price range are often the best choice for entry-level gaming systems. Acceptable performance, good energy efficiency and a reasonable price — these are the qualities that are especially appreciated by gamers who are not ready to spend big money on their hobbies. Most recently, NVIDIA has expanded its range of low cost graphics solutions with the introduction of the GeForce GTX 650 . Let’s see what the novelty is capable of with a recommended price of $109.

With its introduction of a new model in its line of discrete adapters based on modern Kepler GPUs, NVIDIA highlights the growing popularity of Full HD display devices over the past few years. According to statistics from the most popular digital game distribution service Steam, at the beginning of 2008 monitors with a resolution of 1920×1080 was used by about 1% of users, while screens with 1280×1024 were used by about 40% of gamers.

Since then, the situation has changed dramatically — Full HD displays with a share of 30% are the most popular display devices, and their share continues to grow steadily, while 17/19-inch monitors with a classic 5:4 aspect ratio still remain with about 11% of users. As the resolution increases, the requirements for the performance of video cards increase. Let’s take a look at what NVIDIA has to offer for users who have a Full HD monitor, don’t want to miss out on new DirectX 11 games, but aren’t willing to spend well over $100 on a graphics card.

GeForce GTX 650

This model has a special role in the new line of NVIDIA adapters. This is a mass product that will be produced in large quantities. In such a case, it is very important for the developer that the device be technologically advanced and have a minimum production cost.

The new product is based on the GK107 GPU, exactly the same as the GeForce GT 640 — the most affordable Kepler GPU solution at the moment. This is a fairly compact die with an area of 118 mm², which can accommodate 1.3 billion transistors and is produced using 28-nanometer technology. To better understand the initial positions of competing devices from AMD and NVIDIA, we recall that the Cape Verde chips underlying the Radeon HD 7750 and 7770 video cards have an area of 123 mm² and contain approximately 1. 5 billion transistors. As you can see, the sizes of the crystals in both cases are approximately identical. Considering that TSMC manufactures graphics processors for both NVIDIA and AMD, we can suggest that the cost of manufacturing chips is very close. Therefore, neither side will have a serious advantage in the price war — both developers are on an equal footing at this stage.

Returning to the GK107, we note that this chip contains 384 CUDA computing units. Architecturally, the core includes one GPC (Graphics Processing Clusters) cluster, which has two SMXs multiprocessor modules. The number of texture units is 32, ROPs is 16. The core has a 256 KB L2 cache.

In the case of the GeForce GTX 650 , the graphics core initially runs at a high frequency of 1058 MHz. GK107 does not support GPU Boost technology. This means that during load, the chip operates at the maximum specified frequency and does not dynamically accelerate depending on the current conditions. Whether this fact is considered a disadvantage or vice versa — a virtue depends on the point of view from which one looks at it. On the one hand, users who are not too keen on overclocking may not get a fraction of the performance that GPU Boost, activated in older Kepler models, could potentially provide, on the other hand, the absence of such a mechanism allows enthusiasts to get more predictable performance that will not depend on factors affecting the range of autoacceleration.

Two 64-bit memory controllers provide a total of 128-bit bus, which is quite acceptable for devices of this class. At the same time, in the case of the GeForce GTX 650, high-speed GDDR5 is used, which operates at a fairly high frequency — 5000 MHz, due to which the throughput is 80 GB / s. Recall that AMD solutions based on Cape Verde chips also use a 128-bit bus, while in normal mode the memory operates at 4500 MHz, providing a throughput of 72 GB / s. Here NVIDIA’s solution has a slight advantage. GeForce GTX 650 video cards can carry 1 GB or 2 GB of memory on board. Given the positioning of the adapter, in most cases we will see devices with a smaller volume, however, 2-gigabyte versions will also appear on sale.

The declared power consumption level is 64 W. Such loads are quite acceptable for a PCI Express x16 slot, but the manufacturer still considered it necessary to add a six-pin connector for connecting additional power in case the video card does not work in its normal mode. The recommended power supply when assembling a system with a GeForce GTX 650 is 400 watts.

NVIDIA has developed a reference design for the GeForce GTX 650. The graphics card has a very compact full-profile card with a length of only 145mm. The power subsystem contains a three-phase (2+1) stabilizer circuit. Let’s pay attention to the fact that there is no characteristic connector for an SLI bridge on the top edge of the adapter — this model does not involve the use of two video cards in one bundle.

The cooling system is quite simple. A compact aluminum heatsink, visually somewhat reminiscent of that for a boxed version of coolers from Intel processors, only slightly higher. The cooler is blown by an axial fan. Obviously, one should not expect super efficiency from such a model, however, even this design will surely be enough to ensure that the chip temperature does not approach the declared threshold value for GK107 of 98 degrees.

There are three video outputs on the interface panel — a pair of DVI (DVI-I and DVI-D), as well as mini-HDMI. GeForce GTX 650 allows you to connect up to three display devices at the same time. The mounting plate of the adapter is single-slot, however, taking into account the dimensions of the radiator, the video card will also occupy the adjacent lower slot.

Surely we will see on sale a video card based on its reference design. And if many manufacturers will probably experiment with the cooling system, trying to distinguish their products from the background of the rest, then printed circuit boards in most cases will be used standard for this model. Well, as for manufacturers, who traditionally try to surprise not only with the appearance of new adapters, this time they will think about improving the printed circuit board and improving the element base.

MSI N650 PE 1GD5/OC

MSI introduced four modifications of the GeForce GTX 650 at once, for which original printed circuit boards and cooling systems are used. The reviewed model MSI N650 PE 1GD5/OC belongs to the line of Power Edition adapters, which have a reinforced element base and the ability to control the supply voltages of the main components of the video card (Triple Overvoltage function).

OS modification with factory tuning, initially increased GPU frequency. The GPU runs at 1124MHz (+6.2%) instead of 1058MHz, while 1GB of GDDR5 memory runs at the recommended 5000MHz.

MSI uses original design PCB for this model. The length of the PCB has been increased to 225 mm, but the dimensions are secondary here, the main feature is a reinforced power stabilizer. In this case, a four-phase circuit (3 + 1) is used, instead of a three-phase one.

The manufacturer equipped the novelty on the GK107 chip with a transformable cooling system TransThermal . We have already considered a video card with a cooler of a similar design.

This CO allows, if necessary, to use an additional fan, while you can install it on top of the main one (Double Airflow) or move the protective plastic casing with the propeller and fix an additional one next to it (Dual Fan).

Speaking directly about the cooler itself, this is a much more serious design than in the case of the reference model. In this case, a rather massive radiator block made of aluminum is used. The heat sink is copper, while the efficiency of heat distribution is improved due to the S-shaped heat pipe. Power assemblies and a pair of memory chips are in contact with the heatsink through thermal pads. In normal mode, the structure is blown 90mm fan with Propeller Blade technology.

On the top panel of the video card there is a four-pin connector for connecting a second fan. While reviewing the MSI R7770 Power Edition 1GD5/OC with the TransThermal cooler, one of the main gripes was the fan connection using a two-pin connector. At the same time, it had a constant rotation speed, which in no way depended on the speed of the main fan and could not be adjusted. In the case of the GeForce GTX 650, the manufacturer has upgraded the circuitry. An additional fan is now connected using a four-pin connector, and although its revolutions are not monitored (perhaps this option will be available in future versions of the MSI Afterburner utility), they change synchronously with the revolutions of the main one.

The connector for connecting additional power is located at the end of the board. Taking into account the increased GPU clock speed, as well as the upgraded power subsystem, the TDP of the MSI graphics card has been increased from 64W to 70W.

The interface panel, as in the case of the reference model, has a pair of DVI and one mini-HDMI connector. However, unlike the stock adapter, the mounting plate here is two-slot, and half of its area is occupied by a ventilation grill with the company logo.

The video card package includes a user’s manual, small booklets with the nuances of installing a video card and the features of setting up and using the TransThermal cooling system. Also in the box there is a disk with drivers and utilities, an adapter from molex to a six-pin connector for connecting additional power, a DVI-VGA adapter, and also from mini-HDMI to a full-format connector. In addition, the package includes an additional 90mm axial-type fan and screws for mounting it.

In operation

On the open stand (~ 25C), the graphics chip warmed up to 29 degrees. In this case, the fan rotated at a speed of ~ 1100 rpm; in this mode, its operation is practically inaudible. Game battles increased the GPU temperature to 49 degrees, and the fan speed to ~1600 rpm. At the same time, the level of CO noise emitted remained at a very low level. FurMark managed to warm up the chip to 56 C, and increase the speed to 1800 rpm.

It is under these conditions that we have tested how the installation of an additional fan will affect the cooling performance. In Double Airflow mode, when the second propeller was mounted on top of the main propeller, in automatic mode the temperature dropped by 2 degrees to 54C, but the fan speed increased minimally (max. 1920 rpm). After creating the Dual Fan configuration, the maximum heating dropped another degree to 53 C, while the fan speed dropped to 1680 rpm. In our opinion, it is the latter option that is preferable, since in this case the power elements are blown more efficiently. However, it is worth considering that when the protective cover is moved to install a second fan, the overall length of the video card slightly increases.

Is it worth further improving the temperature regime, given the very low temperature of the chip even with one standard fan? The manufacturer gives such an opportunity, and to use it or not, everyone decides for himself.

Overclocking

During experiments with the overclocking potential of the video card, we managed to achieve stable GPU operation at 1244 MHz (+17.6% to the reference value), while the memory worked stably at 5850 MHz (+17%) . At the time of testing, the version of MSI Afterberner was not yet available, which allows increasing the Power Limit parameter, therefore the obtained values of clock frequencies for the chip/memory can rather be considered «sighting». After an increase in the allowable power, the GK107 will surely submit to the 1300 MHz bar, however, this is rather a symbolic limit that cannot drastically affect the final performance.

Performance

To evaluate the performance of the GeForce GTX 650, we selected «reviewers» in a similar price category. First of all, it was interesting to evaluate the possibility of NVIDIA’s new product in comparison with those for AMD’s entry-level gaming video cards based on Cape Verde chips — Radeon HD 7750 and HD 7770. In addition, it was interesting to compare the GTX 650 with its predecessor on the GF116 chip — GeForce GTX 550 Ti .

As can be seen from the diagrams, in most cases, the GeForce GTX 650 is in close embrace of solutions from AMD — the Radeon HD 7770 clamps the novelty on top, the HD 7750 on the bottom. after overclocking, it is close to the HD 7770. In some cases, additional boosting even allows you to get ahead of the latter, and, curiously, this situation can be observed in games where AMD solutions are traditionally strong — Metro 2033 and Aliens vs. Predator. If we talk about the comparison with the GeForce GTX 550 Ti, then it is obvious that a worthy replacement has grown up to the honored veteran. The GeForce GTX 650 often has a 5-10% advantage, with the exception of Dirt 3, where there is parity, as well as Mafia II, which the newcomer managed to get ahead of the GTX 550 Ti only after overclocking.

But where the novelty on the GK107 is significantly ahead of its predecessor is in the level of power consumption. The difference is striking. With the declared TDPs of 64W and 116W for the GTX 650 and GTX 550 Ti, this difference is approximately the same in practice when measuring the power consumption of the entire system under a gaming load. When indicators differ not by percentages, but by almost several times, it is always impressive.

Total

The GeForce GTX 650 is a progressive cost-effective solution with a good level of performance. Finally, solutions based on Kepler have come to the segment of affordable video cards, which can be attributed to the gaming category without any discounts. The previously presented model — GeForce GT 640 — in our opinion, is more suitable for multimedia systems.

The successful launch of a new solution based on the GK107 will largely depend on the retail price of video cards. In this price range, $10-20 can play a decisive role in choosing a particular device. With a minimal difference between the retail price and the recommended one, the GeForce GTX 650 will become a very interesting option for an entry-level gaming platform, while an overpriced price at the start of sales can significantly reduce interest in these solutions. The GeForce GTX 650 falls into a highly competitive price segment. On the one hand, these are the GeForce GTX 550 Ti, which are present on the market in sufficient quantities and cost from $110, on the other hand, the Radeon HD 7750, which has already managed to get cheaper, the price of which has dropped to $100-110. Even more formidable rivals are the Radeon HD 7770 models, offered for $120-135.

In general, the GeForce GTX 650 deserves special attention when choosing an inexpensive video card for games, but the final cost of devices will be the determining factor in its success in the market.
