3DMark Vantage Performance

3DMark Vantage is an outdated DirectX 10 benchmark using 1280×1024 screen resolution. It taxes the graphics card with two scenes, one depicting a girl escaping some militarized base located within a sea cave, the other displaying a space fleet attack on a defenseless planet. It was discontinued in April 2017, and Time Spy benchmark is now recommended to be used instead.

3DMark 11 Performance GPU

3DMark 11 is an obsolete DirectX 11 benchmark by Futuremark. It used four tests based on two scenes, one being few submarines exploring the submerged wreck of a sunken ship, the other is an abandoned temple deep in the jungle. All the tests are heavy with volumetric lighting and tessellation, and despite being done in 1280×720 resolution, are relatively taxing. Discontinued in January 2020, 3DMark 11 is now superseded by Time Spy.

    Budget graphics accelerators based on NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450 are widely used in the mass segment of the video card market. Such success was consolidated by the variety of their modifications, which further «warmed up» the interest of users in such accelerators. The new GeForce GTX 550 Ti graphics core is designed to replace obsolete models with the NVIDIA GeForce GTS 450. Such circumstances should be a good prerequisite for the future popularity of video cards based on the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti. Today we already see a fairly large number of proposals with a new mass graphics core. One of them, the graphics accelerator ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition, made it into our test lab. This solution has a completely changed cooling system with a «proprietary» design, the developers also provided it with a good factory overclock. Video card ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition is based on the new NVIDIA GF116 (GeForce GTX 550 Ti) graphics chip, a detailed description of which can be found in the material dedicated to the MSI GeForce GTX 550 Ti CYCLONE II OC model.

    Now let’s turn our attention to the specification of the ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP solution! edition. Let’s try to find out all the features and main differences with the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti reference sample.

    The layout of the interface panel connectors immediately suggests that the printed circuit board differs significantly from the «reference» one. There are four most relevant connectors today: 2xDVI-I, HDMI, DisplayPort (the «reference» copy has three connectors: 2xDVI-I and one mini — HDMI). One VGA connector is provided with an adapter included in the package. Frequency Formula Model ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition is significantly higher than the one offered by NVIDIA. According to the specification, the factory overclocking of the GPU was 100 MHz (11%), and overclocking the memory increased its effective frequency by 300 MHz (7.3%). A good factory overclock will help ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition will stand out from a number of solutions from other manufacturers. Other characteristics of this model have not changed compared to the «reference» card. Now it is worth considering the branded packaging of this model.

    ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition comes in a small but informative package. On its front side, the use of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti graphics processor and support for its inherent technologies: NVIDIA PhysX and OpenGL 4.1 are noted. It also indicates the presence in this solution of one gigabyte of GDDR5 memory, support for DirectX 11, the presence of an HDMI connector. A separate place is reserved for the name of a series of overclocked solutions “AMP! edition».

    The reverse side of the package allows the buyer to get acquainted in more detail with the technologies supported by the video card, its specification and features. Here you can also find a list of delivery components in twelve languages.

    The list of requirements for the computer in which this model is planned to be installed, and the frequencies to which the ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP video card was overclocked! Edition are listed on the sides of the box. It is important to note that for its operation you will need a high-quality power supply that provides an output power of 400 W, and also preferably having one 6-pin PCIE additional power connector.

    In addition to the graphics accelerator itself, we found:

    • CD with drivers and utilities;

    • Paper documentation for installing and using the video card;

    • DVI-to-VGA adapter;

    • Adapter from two 4-pin peripheral power connectors to one 6-pin video card power connector;

    • «ZOTAC» sticker on the system unit.

    A very characteristic kit for video cards of the mass market segment. It should cover almost all the nuances of using this graphics accelerator. Relative disadvantages include the lack of a bridge for combining a pair of identical accelerators in SLI mode, but it may be needed only if it was not included in your motherboard kit.

    ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP graphics card original design! Edition is formed by the upper plastic casing of the «proprietary» cooling system. The inserts of the iron lattice, which are made in orange, are very noticeable against a black background. This color scheme is «signature» for the company ZOTAC. Structurally, the dimensions of the cooling system will not prevent this model from being placed in any average case.

    ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition received only one connector for connecting an SLI bridge, it will allow you to combine two such accelerators for joint graphics calculation. However, it is worth considering that the motherboard must also support SLI technology. Quite possibly, adding a second graphics card can be a great way to improve your PC’s graphics subsystem.

    For power supply, the video card uses the PCI Express bus and one 6-pin connector on the back of the board. The cable connector is located parallel to the board’s textolite, which can cause some inconvenience when installing a video card even in standard-sized cases.

    ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition consists of two DVI-I connectors, one HDMI and one DisplayPort. If we take into account the presence of an adapter from DVI-I to VGA in the package, then we can say that this model has a complete set of modern interfaces for connecting a monitor, projector or plasma panel.

    There is nothing significant on the back of the board except four tantalum capacitors. Their presence will provide greater stability of the graphics chip when it is heated.

    At the end of the PCB, on its front side, you can see the ON Semiconductor NCP5395T PWM controller. This PWM controller provides a 3+1-phase graphics card power system: 3 phases for the GPU and one for the video memory.

    Four transistors are used in each power phase, which provides greater power stability and reduces heating of each of its elements.

    ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition has an original design, which only remotely resembles the wiring of the «reference» model.

    The central part houses the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti graphics core surrounded by six memory chips.

    The NVIDIA GF116 graphics chip is manufactured using the 40 nm process technology. It contains 192 universal shader processors (or CUDA cores in NVIDIA terminology) and 24 ROPs. The frequencies of the graphics core and memory are increased at the factory and are 1000 MHz for the core, 2000 MHz for the shader unit and effective 4400 MHz for the video memory. Data exchange between the graphics core and memory is carried out according to 192-bit bus.

    The NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti memory controller supports a variety of memory chip capacities. It is for this reason and as a result of the desire to save money that the video card memory with a total volume of 1 GB is recruited using 4 chips of 128 MB each (H5GQ1h34AFR T2C) and two chips of 256 MB each (H5GQ2h34MFR T2C). GDDR5 chips are manufactured by HYNIX. According to the marking, they all have a nominal effective frequency of 5000 MHz. Given the lower frequency of the video memory, even with factory overclocking, we can expect its significant acceleration using manual overclocking.

    Original cooling system used in ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition, consists of one large aluminum heatsink covered with a black plastic shroud.

    The 80mm cooling fan mounts directly to the aluminum heatsink and has an orange grille under the plastic shroud. Partially it is visible from the outside, which makes the overall design of the graphics accelerator 9 brighter and more noticeable.0152 ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition .

    The aluminum heatsink has slits to allow forced air to come into contact with the memory chips and power regulator components. This should provide all hot elements of the board with normal cooling.

    When there is no load, the graphics core and memory frequencies are automatically reduced to values of 405 MHz and 648 MHz, respectively, which leads to less heat generation and less power consumption of the video card.

    Using the FurMark utility, the effectiveness of the “proprietary” cooling system from ZOTAC was checked. Testing was carried out in two cooler operating modes: with automatic fan speed control and with the maximum rotation speed set manually.

    At maximum load, the temperature of the graphics core reached 81 degrees, which is not the best result, but quite acceptable for NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti. At the same time, the fan worked at 52% of its power, producing a noise background that was hardly noticeable against the background of case fans.

    After setting the fan speed to the maximum (3900 rpm), the cooler started making noticeable noise under load, and the temperature was 68 degrees. This indicates a good margin of efficiency of the cooling system, which will help to get good results of increasing performance after manually increasing the frequency formula of the video card.

    Cooling system installed on ZOTAC GeForce GTX 550 Ti AMP! Edition is an example of the best solution in terms of price / performance. Although it should be called noisier and less efficient than the CYCLONE II, which we tested earlier in the material dedicated to the MSI GeForce GTX 550 Ti CYCLONE II OC model.
