Growth came not only from increased hardware capacity, but also from the use of an updated version of DLSS technology. NVidia claims that DLSS 3.0 is another revolution, although the essence of the technology has not changed. The company trained AI (artificial intelligence) to complete part of the image, using a lower resolution image as a basis.
In DLSS 3.0, the algorithm analyzes consecutive frames and movements in the picture, but is able to work not with individual pixels, as it was before, but with individual frames.
The algorithm was demonstrated using the example of Cyberpunk 2077 running in the new experimental Max Ray Tracing Mode. A system with an RTX 4090 graphics card and DLSS enabled showed a fourfold increase in performance compared to an RTX 309 graphics card0 Ti (without DLSS). Other test settings: 3840×2160 resolution, maximum gaming settings, highest performance mode with ultra-high resolution DLSS, i9-12900K processor, 32 GB RAM, Win 11 x64.
The result is impressive, but the devil is in the details. The comparison is sly, because the 3090 Ti video cards also support DLSS technology, albeit the previous generation. Unfortunately, in the presentation, NVidia did not provide performance data for the 4090 with DLSS 3.0 turned off, for the sake of comparison.

DLSS technology works, is able to pull the frame rate to an acceptable level, but it worked before. So talk of a revolution is premature. The performance increase is decent, but exclusive to 40-series video cards. A very convenient exclusive, considering the video cards of the 30th series that have flooded the market, which have become much cheaper at the same time
New video cards are similar to their predecessors. The GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 are compatible with older PSUs as long as they deliver 450W for the 4090, 320W for the 4080 with 16GB of RAM, and 285W for the 4080 with 12GB of RAM. The power requirements of the GeForce 30 were about the same.
Two of the top 40-series graphics cards will get a three-slot cooling system, while the 4080 version with 12 GB of RAM will be equipped with a manufacturer’s choice of cooling system. It is possible to connect up to 4 monitors to video cards (1 HDMI, 3 DisplayPort). The HDMI version is 2.1a (HDR video output is supported at 4K resolution and 120Hz), the DisplayPort specification is only 1.4a.
Prices
Recommended prices for GeForce RTX 4090 — $1600, GeForce RTX 4080 with 16 GB RAM — $ 1200, with 12 GB RAM — $ 900. Along with the release of prices for new graphics cards, NVidia announced a reduction in the recommended retail prices for the GeForce 30 series. The cost of the basic version of the GeForce RTX 3060 graphics card is now $330.
Prices for cards of the 40th series are high. It is possible that this was done deliberately. Enthusiasts bought 30-series cards from resellers at higher prices, so NVidia is offering to pay for the enthusiasm now. The rest of the players have yet to empty the warehouse stocks of GeForce 30 chips. Probably, only after that there will be a price reduction — if the economic situation in the world allows.
NVidia cards are not officially delivered to Russia from mid-2022. However, parallel import schemes have already started working. The premium for such schemes is several tens of percent and is limited only by the greed of sellers. But the estimated price for such cards is 30% above the recommended retail prices, i.e. 2000-2200 US dollars for the GeForce RTX 4090, if the cards appear on the free market.
New games
You can admire the genius of NVidia engineers, but any, even the most powerful gaming graphics card, is worth nothing without games. The presentation showed that with its policy in previous years, in relation to gamers, the company drove itself into a trap.
During the mining boom years, the PC gaming industry was in a coma. It was not profitable for developers to invest in expensive projects with ray tracing support when the market is dominated by 2016 graphics cards without support for this technology. So it was necessary to demonstrate the technological level of NVidia’s graphics with the help of staged videos.
Only Cyberpunk 2077, the creation of the legendary Polish studio CD Projekt RED, today is able to demonstrate decent next-gen graphics. Graphically, the game looks insanely beautiful — this is achieved by considerable power. So even the new generation of video cards have to include DLSS to help ensure acceptable frame rates. On the side of NVidia, increased interest in the game played against the backdrop of the recently released and critically acclaimed anime franchise Edgerunners.
Unfortunately, apart from Cyberpunk 2077, none of the current projects is able to demonstrate the level of graphics that NVidia is aiming for. So the old Portal and The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind had to demonstrate a technological breakthrough. Moreover, the public was presented not with remasters of already classic games, but with RTX mods for them.
The emphasis on modifications is not accidental. Given the low prevalence of new video cards, the poor performance of console solutions (and the bar is set by such «monsters» as the Xbox Series S and Steam Deck), you should not count on the imminent release of projects with top graphics and RTX support. And in this case, the question arises: “Do I need a card of the RTX 409 level0?
NVidia decided to somehow fill the gap, involve the modder community and introduced a toolkit based on the Nvidia Omniverse. This platform allows you to remaster classic games, improve textures, improve lighting and add ray tracing thanks to AI. The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind mod was intended to demonstrate the possibilities of the technology. The game has become prettier, but the language does not turn to call the quality of graphics modern.
The situation with the Portal mod looks different. The presented RTX version of the game looks decent. All owners of the original on Steam will receive the updated version for free. At the presentation, NVidia did not specify how deeply ray tracing support is integrated into the Source engine. Rumors of adding RTX to the Source 2 engine have been circulating as far back as 2021, so it’s possible Portal RTX is «beta» integrating the technology. And that’s why they decided to do a run-in not on Portal 2, but on the first part, which is more like a techno demo than a full-fledged game.
Diagnosis
NVidia made a good presentation. The new graphics cards are impressive, the videos are amazing, the diagrams inspire respect for the work done.
But if we discard the marketing husk, it turns out that video cards of the 40th series are not needed. The “fourfold” increase in productivity actually turned out to be less. Games for which such performance with ray tracing is in demand can be easily counted on the fingers of one hand. The rest of the projects are handled by GeForce 30 cards.
The gaming future of the new series of video cards is still in question. Warehouses are filled with 30-series cards, dismantled mining farms are pouring into the secondary market, and developers are creating games for portable devices and old hardware. What game should you buy a $900 RTX 4080 for? Such cards will be in demand only by enthusiasts or professionals.
Perhaps the future 4060 will be more successful as the trend starts to change. But this will not happen thanks to the presented RTX 409 graphics cards0 and 4080, and the wide availability of 3060 and 3080, which will reach the players and form a market ready for next generation graphics. The only question is how long it will take to change the trend.
Given the timing of decision-making and the development of new projects, we will get the first games with graphics of the next generation in two or three years. By that time, NVidia will just have the GeForce 50 series ready. Until then, the old 1060 will do.

This technology is already familiar to someone, but in short, with its help, the GPU draws pixels on the screen during the game. Thus, you can improve the clarity and quality of the picture without sacrificing performance. For example, you want to play Cyberpunk 2077 on your PC at 30 fps, but your graphics card can only provide FHD resolution. With DLSS, you can upscale your resolution to 2K or even 4K and still play in the same 30 frames.
DLSS 3.0 is a completely new development. This system fits in your video card and can not only complete pixels, but also completely complete frames. In general, if you compare how transistors (the physical cells in processors responsible for performance) cope with the increased power, it turns out that these transistors did not increase significantly from 2018 to 2022. But performance in the same tasks has grown 16 times, and all thanks to algorithms, not physical capacities.

The first new graphics card on a new platform from Nvidia. On board, they promise 24 GB of video memory of the G6X standard. And performance will increase two times in games without RTX and four times with RTX compared to the top 3090Ti. A more budgetary new product outshines its predecessor 3080Ti 2 to 3 times in the same games. It comes in two versions: with 12 and 16 GB of video memory. The cost is from 1.2 thousand dollars, and the start of sales is promised in November.
But the main thing is that the line of 30th video cards will finally receive discounts in stores. I would like to hope that in the upcoming New Year holidays, buyers around the world will have the opportunity not only to purchase new video cards, but also to do so at a nice price.
As for the 40 series, the latest graphics cards use fundamentally new computing power and new chips responsible for self-learning and RTX. This line allows you to significantly improve performance in the same games that you are used to. If the presentation did not exaggerate, then this is indeed a very big step forward in the performance of future systems.
Further on at the presentation, they talked about all kinds of applications and package offers that allow you to create virtual worlds, physically accurate virtual models, and much more. We will look at some of the most interesting innovations that will allow us to understand where the world of computing is heading in general.

The presentation presented a set of tools that can be used by every developer within companies to create simulations. The example is very simple: you have a warehouse and you want to replace all employees with robots. To begin with, your warehouse is scanned by robots with cameras, then they create its virtual model. It includes boxes, pallets, and so on. Also, all the robots that you need are entered into the system. The natural question is: why do this?
Answer: The whole system is driven into an artificial intelligence engine that is set to map your warehouse. Where and what goods will be stored, how robots will approach them, and the like. And voila — you get an autonomous warehouse recipe that can be as efficient as possible and work without errors.

Have you heard of autopilot in cars like Tesla? So, each automaker creates these systems with his own hands and independently checks, configures and trains them. These are huge resources, and no one knows how to do it right. After all, car manufacturers never created «computers on wheels.»
Nvidia offers a couple of interesting solutions. The first is the «brain» of the car. Now, instead of disparate systems and sensors that are responsible for their parameters in a car, there will be only one system responsible for everything. We are sure that many automakers are already pre-ordering such computers with their own operating systems to make their lives easier.
But the autopilot learning model is much more interesting. This is a virtual world that artificial intelligence creates using cameras and sensors attached to cars. It is enough to drive on such a street, and a special algorithm will recreate it in virtual space. Next, an autopilot system (of any automaker) is placed in this simulator and begins to roll its kilometers. At the same time, the autopilot does not even know that it is in the virtual world, which means that it can learn around the clock (and we will no longer need to see cars with a pile of sensors and a driver who makes sure that an accident does not occur). After all, now such machines need to roll thousands of kilometers in order to make and correct their own mistakes. And as we know from the news, this is not always safe.

The last block worth mentioning is language models, but in a broader sense. Have you seen the images created by the algorithm on the Internet? So, this is the language model. After all, in order for a computer to understand what to draw, it must know each individual object, how it looks, and be able to understand the context. This is a very difficult task, which every six months makes some kind of breakthrough and causes a storm of discussion in the news.
Nvidia has taken it a step further and entered into several partnerships with institutes and labs around the world. And they make language models for biological, chemical, and DNA and RNA language.
For example, the language of chemistry. All the chemical elements of the periodic table were entered into a certain knowledge base. Then these elements began to be combined with each other and also entered into a certain «dictionary» for the algorithm. And then they began to train the algorithm to create connections on its own. They gave him several elements and the result that is expected of him. And he found ways in which the connection should have worked. And now it is a valid language pack.
Even today, according to the head of the company, this model can find thousands of drugs with the properties people need. You literally enter the desired result in chemical terms, and the system gives you the answer and several variations of it, and that’s it — the new flu pill is ready. No more billions of dollars to search for new drugs — everything is done by the algorithm in a matter of hours or days, depending on the complexity of the connection.

In fact, there is a lot we don’t know about what technologies are already being used in the world of medicine, auto manufacturing, and so on. For example, Amazon converted a huge number of its warehouses to a robotic model and doubled profits in some divisions.
