A new patch for Gears of War 4 is rolling out today at 10 a.m. PST/1 p.m. EST, which will likely disrupt servers for some time. The so-called Title Update, the third since the game came out in October, adds new multiplayer maps to the game as well as fixing some minor issues. Also included are new options for spectator mode and a new system to combat quitters.
For many Gears of War 4 fans, though, the new maps are likely the biggest news and so far details on those have been kept quiet by developer The Coalition in their patch notes. More information is expected at some point this morning, at time of writing all that’s certain is that two multiplayer maps will be added to the rotation as well as «hundreds» of new cards for players to collect. The Coalition has, however, warned gamers to hold off on buying any gear packs until the studio has confirmed that the new content has been added to the pool.
The studio has been less reticent about the rest of the patch, thankfully: besides a long list of tweaks and fixes, there are also several updates to Gears of War 4‘s multiplayer, such as adding several new features to spectator mode that focus on making watching the game more informative and fun. Keeping in with The Coalition’s eSports initiative, spectators, and casters will be able to follow the action more closely thanks to increased HUD information as well as the ability to watch the action through several camera angles, controlled through keyboard and gamepad shortcuts.
The biggest game changer of Title Update 3 may, however, be the new measures in place to lower the amount of dropped sessions in multiplayer. Though some may feel justified for rage quitting Gears of War 4, the online experience overall has suffered because many players don’t stick around until the match is officially over. The Coalition is planning a series of patches that implement new rules that should lower the amount of people that, for whatever reason, break off play.
From now on, anyone that leaves a match for any reason, including connection issues, has five minutes to rejoin the session they left. If they fail to meet this deadline, they will be suspended from playing for a while, with each offense adding to that timer. There are several conditions that can add or remove time from the suspension clock as well, all of them aimed at warning first-timers while punishing repeat offenders incrementally.
Though at first glance these measures may seem harsh, the new anti-quitting rules should, together with the new maps and features, keep Gears of War 4 firmly on the list of best games of 2016 and beyond.
