“There is only one thing I regret: games… Even wisdom cannot replace them,” wrote Zinaida Gippius. Sadly, it’s a fact: the games of the twentieth century are gradually disappearing, to say nothing of the nineteenth century. And about the games of the twenty-first century, it is better to ask our children, grandchildren, and they will tell us in detail about computer games. Well, if you ask them, for example, what is the difference between burners and tags? Difficult question? And what is serso, bilbock and what are the rules of the game of croquet? This is what is called a backfilling question! Let’s figure it out.
Bilbock is a French word. Rather, there are two of them — “bille” — “ball” and “bouquer” — “to put on the horns”. This is how this game was described in the collection “Games for All Ages”, published in St. Petersburg in 1844: “Bilbock consists of: 1) a wooden or bone ball with a conical hole drilled through, and 2) sticks with a flat cup at one end and pointed at the other end .
