FIFA 23 Ultimate Team sees FUT Champions return as the biggest and best competitive mode, with players of every skill level competing to get their hands on top tier rewards. Here’s all the info you need, including on Play Offs, Finals and their release time.

Since its debut in FIFA 17, FUT Champions has become the pinnacle of Ultimate Team competition as players assemble their strongest possible squad to take into the weekend.

The game mode has been tweaked and tinkered with since then – notably dropping from 40 matches to 20 – but again returns in FIFA 23 as Ultimate Team’s major competitive mode.

FIFA 23 FUT Champs qualifying

To even get access to the FUT Champs playoff format in FIFA 22, you needed to earn Champions Qualification Points and these could be obtained by winning matches in Ultimate Team’s Division Rivals game mode.

This has pretty much been standard for the last few iterations of the game and the system has remained in EA SPORTS’ FIFA 23 with players needing 1,500 points to be eligible.

FIFA 23 FUT Champs play-offs ranks, rewards, qualification

Qualification

EA has continued with its recent changes to FUT Champs play-off qualification by making it so that to enter the Weekend League you’ll need four wins and a loss.

Article continues after ad

Qualifying has been made easier over the years with the early games requiring you to win four straight matches or earn enough points through FUT Champs – which still required four wins to get in.

FIFA 22 changed things up by making it so that players needed to win 5 matches out of 9 to qualify for the Weekend League, before eventually changing it to 4 wins out of 9.

Ranks

Even though it’s not as important, as most people try to get their required wins and forfeit their final games, there are still different levels to achieve.

Here’s a look at the ranks available in the FUT Champs Weekend League play-off.

How many games do you need to play in FIFA 23 FUT Champs?

FIFA 23 has once again remained accessible to aspiring Weekend League players and is only asking users to take part in 20 games.

The early years of FIFA Ultimate Team’s FUT Champs were quite grueling as there was a potential for players to take part in 40 FUT Champs games.

This has been lessened in recent years with FIFA 22 only requiring users to take part in up to 20 games and there’s no reason why this figure should be altered as it feels like the perfect amount that isn’t time-consuming.

FUT Champions points and rank system

Ranks

Another area in which FUT Champs has remained quite consistent is in its rank format and criteria for achieving them as there are 10 ranks in total and the points required are largely the same.

Article continues after ad

FUT Champs splits up the mode into Ranks that players can achieve by earning a certain amount of points based on wins and losses.

These are the ranks and what you’ll need to do to hit them:

  • Rank 1: 76-80pts
  • Rank 2: 72-75pts
  • Rank 3: 67-71pts
  • Rank 4: 60-66pts
  • Rank 5: 51-59pts
  • Rank 6: 45-50pts
  • Rank 7: 36-44pts
  • Rank 8: 24-35pts
  • Rank 9: 12-23pts
  • Rank 10: 4-11pts

Points

In order to ascend up the ranks, you needed to earn points, and this was broken down into 4 points for a win and 1 point for a defeat.

In theory, players could lose all 20 games in FIFA 22 FUT Champs, unlocking Rank 9 rewards in the process.

EA Sports

What actually happened was that many players would score an own goal and quit their match, giving free wins to speed up the process. After this formality was completed, players could end up with several free wins and earn great rewards for not actually winning any matches.

FUT Champs FIFA 23 format explained

After a major overhaul to FUT Champs in FIFA 22, the format has remained largely unchanged for FIFA 23.

Therefore if you played FUT Champs in FIFA 22 then you’ll already be familiar with the format, but we’ll provide a quick explainer for any new non-returning players.

FUT Champs is made up of two stages: Champions Play-Offs and Champion’s Finals (previously known as Weekend League).

However, in order to access the Champions Play-Offs, you need to earn Champions Qualification Points (CQP) from FUT’s Division Rivals mode. Once you earn 1500 CQP you will be automatically entered into the Play-Offs.

Champions Play-Offs

The point-earning doesn’t end there, however — you’ll next have to earn 20 points over the next 10 matches to qualify for the Champions Finals, with each win worth four points and each loss resulting in one point.

You’ll therefore need to win at least four out of the 10 matches. You’ll then earn a Finals Qualification Token, which can be redeemed immediately or at a later weekend.

Champions Finals

All this however was just to get to the Champions Finals — now the real competition begins. From 8am BST on Friday morning to 8am BST on Monday morning, you have 20 matches to earn as many points as possible.

More like this

The point system works the same as in the Play-Offs — four points for a win and one point for a loss.

Once you complete 20 matches or the Champions Finals period ends, you will then be able to claim your rewards.

Nepomniachtchi shamefully lost the title of world champion to the American. Faltered at the decisive moment

The Russian chess player turned the tide of the match with Nakamura, but made a mistake and lost. How embarrassing.

Photo: © FIDE / David Llada

Jan Nepomniachtchi, after a brilliant victory over the great Norwegian Magnus Carlsen in the semi-final of the Fischer World Chess Championship, set his sights on taking the coveted title, with which the American Hikaru Nakamura categorically disagreed.

Everything was decided in Armageddon, and it must be admitted that the name of this key party fully reflected the meaning of what was happening. nine0003

To the final through the match with the great Carlsen

Nepomniachtchi is one of the main stars of world chess in recent times. The Russian grandmaster became the winner of the Candidates Tournament in Madrid this summer. There he won the right to play again for the world chess crown with Carlsen, but the Norwegian refused the match, hinting that he was not very interested in this confrontation. Nepomniachtchi did not refuse anything, and next year he must play a match for the title of world champion with the Chinese Ding Liren, who came second in the Candidates Tournament. nine0003

Fans and chess experts really wanted to somehow once again see the confrontation between the Russian and the Norwegian. And such a case happened at the Fischer World Chess Championship in Reykjavik, Iceland at the end of October 2022. Fischer chess has some differences from classical ones. The tournament is held according to the rules created by the 11th world champion American Robert Fisher, according to which competitions are held with an arbitrary (960 possible options) initial arrangement of pieces. nine0003

Although the Fischer World Chess Championship is held under the auspices of FIDE for only the second time, the level of participants is simply fantastic. All the cream of the world chess gathered in Iceland, and the prize fund of the competition was 400 thousand dollars. The tournament path of Nepomniachtchi and another finalist Nakamura was similar. Both finished second in their groups and were not favorites in the semi-finals. However, the American unexpectedly easily outplayed the young genius from Uzbekistan Nodirbek Abdusattorov, and Jan was stronger than the reigning world champion in classical chess Magnus Carlsen in a dramatic duel. nine0003

Nepomniachtchi watched Dota before the final

The Russian and the Norwegian put on a real show. Nepomniachtchi lost in the first game, but then he pulled himself together and won the next three and recorded one of the main victories of his career. There was only one step left to the title of world champion. Of course, no one promised Jan an easy life, because their rivalry with Nakamura has been going on since 2015 and sometimes it was quite sharp. But I really wanted to wish success to our compatriot. In conditions when Russian sport is in almost complete isolation, any international triumph is doubly valuable. nine0003

It’s funny that shortly before the start of the final match, Nepomniachtchi wrote on his social networks that he was following the broadcast of a major Dota tournament. Earlier there were talks that Ian might go into eSports, but for now he remains in chess. Although he does not forget about his hobbies. It seems that watching Dota did not help the Russian too much. He started the final unsuccessfully, losing in the first game, and with virtually no options.

Armageddon is not in Yan’s favor

The scenario of the semi-final with Carlsen was repeated, where Jan also started the meeting poorly, and then played out and won. There was hope that in the decisive duel Nepomniachtchi would be able to turn the tide. In the second game, he played black and again was close to failure. Fortunately, in the end, the Russian still pulled out a draw, but the overall score was not in his favor — 0.5 against 1.5.

The situation has become critical. The defeat in the third game deprived Jan of his chances of winning the championship. It was necessary to reduce it at least to a draw in order to stay in the game. Nakamura came to the rescue, making several gross mistakes. Nepomniachtchi wasn’t perfect either, but he put the pressure on his opponent and equalized the score. The fourth batch turned out to be fast and didn’t change anything. It looks like the opponents were preparing for Armageddon — something like extra time in football. nine0003

Nepomniachtchi had a slight advantage at the beginning and could even take a risk by making two sharp moves. But the Russian preferred a more cautious tactic and made a mistake. Nakamura seized the initiative. Jan did not wait for a checkmate from his opponent and admitted defeat. Oh, this Armageddon! The Russian lost the title of the world champion, but proved himself from the best side. And it gave our fans a reason to discuss international competitions not from the outside, as we have been used to doing for the last six months, but directly from within. nine0003

World Chess Crown Match

MOSCOW, July 20. /TASS/. Norwegian world chess champion Magnus Carlsen on Wednesday refused to defend his title. In the match for the world crown, he was supposed to meet with Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi.

In 2013, Carlsen beat India’s Viswanathan Anand to become the 16th world champion. Since then, he has defended the title four times: in 2014 he defeated Anand again, in 2016 — the Russian Sergey Karyakin, in 2018 — the American Fabiano Caruana, and in 2021 he was stronger than Nepomniachtchi. nine19 -year-old Frenchman Alireza Firouzja. At the Candidates Tournament in Madrid, Firuja did not show his best game and took sixth place out of eight participants, while Nepomniachtchi won. After the Russian’s victory, Carlsen announced that he would think about participating in the match for the world chess crown, and announced his decision on Wednesday. nine0003

«I don’t have the motivation to play another match. I just feel like I don’t really like it, even though I’m sure the match would be interesting for historical reasons,» Carlsen said in an interview with chess24.com. with Arkady Dvorkovich (President of the International Chess Federation — TASS note) and Emil Sutovsky (CEO of the International Chess Federation — TASS note) after the Candidates Tournament I was there to tell them that I would not defend my title in the next championship match world, we had a little discussion, some of their suggestions I liked, some I didn’t. » nine0003

Not the first time in history

Carlsen’s refusal was not the first time in history that a world champion has decided not to defend his title. The fourth world champion Alexander Alekhine refused a rematch with Cuban Jose Raul Capablanca. The negotiations were interrupted by World War II, after which Alekhine became the only chess player to lose his title due to death.

In 1975, a match between the Soviet grandmaster Anatoly Karpov and the 11th world champion American Robert Fischer was supposed to take place. The parties could not agree on the terms of the match for a long time, and as a result, Fischer refused to play, and Karpov became the 12th world champion. nine0003

«It brings back memories of 1975, when Fischer turned down the match against Karpov. This is not very good news for the chess world,» Sergey Smagin, Vice President of the Moscow Chess Federation, told TASS.

Nepomniachtchi was upset by this decision of the Norwegian. «For me personally, this [Carlsen’s decision] was rather disappointing and sad,» he told chess24. com. «Maybe he felt like a hostage to the situation.»

Inconclusive decision

Many experts believe that Carlsen’s decision may not be final. The fact is that on August 7, the presidential elections of the International Chess Federation (FIDE) will be held, in which the current head of the organization, Russian Arkady Dvorkovich, Ukrainian Andrey Barishpolets, Belarusian Inalbek Sheripov and Frenchman Bakhar Kuatli will take part. Perhaps, after it is decided whether Dvorkovich will remain in his place or not, Carlsen will return to negotiations about the match. nine0003

«I think he is waiting for the final formation of the world chess government. All really serious decisions will be made after August 10, I suggest we all wait. I’m sure the decision is not final,» international grandmaster Sergei Shipov said in an interview with TASS.

Smagin takes a similar position. «We have to wait, maybe Carlsen will change his mind, and when it is clear who will lead FIDE, he will return to the negotiations. This is not the behavior of the world champion, I hope that the real actions will be different and the Carlsen-Nepomniachtchi match will still take place,» he said. Smagin. nine0003

Russian officials also reacted to this event. A well-known chess fan, honorary president of the Russian Olympic Committee Alexander Zhukov believes that Carlsen’s refusal will not reduce interest in the match for the world chess crown.

«He talked about this before, but I didn’t think he would still refuse. When a person has no motivation, it’s hard to add something to it, nevertheless, Carlsen remains number one in the rating,» Zhukov told TASS «I don’t think that Carlsen’s decision will reduce interest in the fight — the match will take place anyway. As for Nepomniachtchi’s chances of winning, they are very good — he performed brilliantly during the Candidates Tournament, where he won convincingly.» nine0003

Press Secretary of the President of Russia, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Russian Chess Federation Dmitry Peskov expressed regret that the match between Nepomniachtchi and Carlsen might not take place. «Of course, we’re sorry! It doesn’t look good on Carlsen,» Peskov told TASS. «We’ll still be rooting for Jan and waiting for the crown in Russia.»

Moscow — a possible match

If Carlsen finally decides not to play Nepomniachtchi for the world title, the Russian’s opponent will be the Chinese Ding Liren, who took second place in the Candidates Tournament. The winner of this match will become the 17th world champion. nine0003

The location of the meeting has not yet been determined. As one of the options, the president of the Russian Chess Federation Andrey Filatov proposed the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. «We will fight for the match,» Filatov told TASS. «It could take place in Moscow, possibly at the Tretyakov Gallery. Magnus turned down the match, so there is hope that half of the match can be played in Russia. It will be a gift to all chess fans.»

«It’s a pity that the great champion will not play, but if Magnus played, there would be no chance to see the match in Moscow, and now there is hope,» Filatov added in an interview with reporters.
