Free mmorpg for pc: Best Free MMOs in 2022

Top 10 Best Free MMORPG Games in 2022

Ollie Mattison

Nov 29, 2022• Proven solutions

MMOs are among the most ambitious and popular PC games. The MMO industry generates 10 billion dollars a year and reaches audiences much larger than that. You can find plenty of both free MMORPG games and paid MMORPG’s. World of Warcraft, for example, has players who have cumulatively spent more time on Azeroth than the human species has existed on this planet for 6 million years. The underlying idea behind all these big numbers is a simple one: anyone, anywhere, can become anything in this virtual world (and grind out some loot along the way).

Unlike the text-based multi-user dungeons from which MMOs evolved, today’s MMOs are incredibly sophisticated. These games offer the best of the genre, be it as humanoid cats or as ruthless dictators. We’ve rounded up the best online games you can play today to celebrate that awesome lineage—and help you find the one that is worth your time. To make things simpler, we’ve also categorized them to give you a good idea of what makes each game exceptional. Also, we will share a list of free MMORPG games, so you don’t need to worry about paying anything to play these games.

1. World of Warcraft

Platforms: Windows, macOS

Understandably, you may think the world of Warcraft isn’t a free MMORPG. So why is it listed? You can play the first 20 levels of the game for free, and since 20 levels mean a lot of time in World of Warcraft, you should have no problem playing it all. It is for this reason that it has been included on this list.

There are not many people who are unfamiliar with the world of Warcraft. It’s a game that’s synonymous with the MMORPG genre. It offers players an expansive, ever-expanding universe filled with content to discover. All the elements of a quality MMORPG are present in this game, such as character customization, a persistent open world, and a compelling storyline. Getting started with World of Warcraft should be your top priority if you haven’t done so already. A game like this shouldn’t be missed.

2. Guild Wars 2

Platforms: Windows, macOS

Another free MMORPG for beginners to start with, Guild Wars 2, has an interesting storyline that changes based on your decisions. You won’t find that in other games of its kind. As with most other MMORPGs, the game includes general features like character customization, crafting, and strong PvP and PvP elements.

It takes place in the fantasy world of Tyria and lets players explore a vast persistent world alone or with friends. As part of Guild Wars 2’s story, there are also a number of instanced environments that players will encounter. Guild Wars 2’s dynamic action-based mechanic makes leveling up far more enjoyable than World of Warcraft, which is sometimes considered a grind. If you’re tired of the monotony of leveling up in other MMORPGs, this game is for you.

3. Secret Worlds Legends

Platforms: Windows, macOS

Secret World Legends is another recent convert to the free-to-play model. The game is defined at least partly by its setting, which is the stuff of conspiracy theory crackpots’ dreams (or their worst nightmares). A world shrouded in mystery and filled with supernatural horrors is characterized by secret societies, mythological creatures, and evil cults. This game’s events are given a dramatic sweeping sweep by some killer sound design, which effectively amps up the tension.

The game’s dedication to storytelling is one of its strongest features. Instead of the standard MMO trope of allowing players to queue up an out-of-control number of quests with no sense of overarching purpose, the Secret World focuses on a small number of quests at a time with clearly defined goals. The game’s narrative is emphasized by narrowing the focus, and its writing and atmosphere are showcased, which is of a fairly uniform high quality.

4. Star Conflict

Platforms: Windows, Xbox One

Try Star Conflict if you like space exploration. The free MMORPG puts you in the role of a space pilot seeking out alien treasures scattered all over its expansive universe. During Star Conflict, you are tasked with collecting various spaceships, for example, fighters or massive satellites that you can float in space.

There are a variety of PvE quests and raids in the game, where you have to fight alien squadrons and space pirates and PvP while floating around in outer space in your spaceship. You can also customize your spaceship using various weapon types or ship modules organized under a tech tree. Another great feature of Star Conflict is that it allows players to experience the game in virtual reality with Oculus Rift.

5. Skyforge

Platforms: Windows

Throughout your apotheosis, you become a god, gaining followers, and ascending to godhood in a sci-fi world fully equipped with advanced technology. That’s true, all those words do not typically go together, but let’s not give up just yet. When you can make your own god in Skyforge, why be a mere minion in a vast world filled with other loot-grinders?

Unlike many typical MMOs, Skyforge offers players the ability to change their class at any time, so matchmaking is smooth and level progression is no longer necessary. In the prestige system, characters are ranked according to their general stats rather than by leveling up. Skyforge offers a nice diversion from other MMO’s grind by changing traditional MMO systems, offering a fascinating sci-fi world, and offering action-oriented combat.

6. DC Universe Online

Platforms:  Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox One

DC Universe Online, an online MMORPG with custom abilities, offers the opportunity to build your own superhero and play with well-known heroes from the DC multiverse, such as Wonder Woman, Superman and Batman, among others.

In addition to its unique combat tab-targeting system which makes it stand out from other games on this list, it also makes the game more user-friendly for players. As well as having a captivating storyline, cool gear to collect, and levels that allow players to choose how they want to progress in the game, DC Universe Online offers many other features that will appeal to gamers.

7. Lord of the Rings Online

Platforms: Windows, macOS

The Lord of the Rings Online is an MMORPG based in the impeccably detailed LOTR universe that is perfect for fans of medieval fantasy and Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. With the game, players go on a journey across Middle Earth, fighting alongside familiar characters and exploring locations such as those in the movies.

There is just one small exception to the gameplay of Lord of the Rings Online, but it’s no different than any other MMORPG on this list. There are no large scale PvP opportunities in LOTR Online, since all characters in the game are on the same side. It instead provides players with a Monster Play mode that allows them to create a monster at level ten and battle other players within Ettenmoor.

8. Star Trek Online

Platforms:  PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC

In addition to its solid license, Star Trek Online offers a rich and unique gameplay experience that is unbeatable in the MMO market. With its spaceships and aliens, and a consistent blend of third-person shooter and naval simulator, Space Truckers Online is an addictive game that will keep you hooked with its spaceships and aliens.

Many familiar elements are found in the series and films that are as enjoyable to discover as they sound. Fan service is done right in Star Trek: The Original Series by blowing up borg cubes, strolling Deep Space Nine’s promenade, or beaming down to exotic planets as part of an away team. A new story expansion on the Alpha Quadrant, launching at the end of January, offers new gameplay content set in a previously unexplored sector, as well as a number of recent limited-time events and minigames.

9. ArcheAge

Platforms: Windows, macOS

You can do pretty much anything in ArcheAge, a medieval fantasy game that takes you to a medieval fantasy world. If you want to be a powerful warrior, you can do so with a huge sword of your own and a big group of friends at your side, or you can become an economics expert and take on the challenges of farming and trade. As a pirate, you can rob traders and plunder their goods.

Additionally, Mounts and Travel play an important role in ArcheAge. On top of riding wild animals such as lions and deer across its colossal world, you can also take to the air and sea. You can sail the oceans in anything from rowboats to warships, and there are also aerial modes of transportation like gliders and airships. Archeage shows how dedicated Trion is (and the resources that they have available to them) in its polish and longevity.

10.  EVE Online

Platforms: Windows, macOS

EVE Online is still the premier space MMO, and it has been the source of many memorable gaming stories, owing to the way it focuses on a few elements and excels at them. As well as meticulous simulations and systems, CCP pays attention to its dedicated community and responds appropriately, as it is often their subscribers who make the decisions.

Although detractors dismiss EVE as spreadsheets in space, the criticism highlights one of its strongest points: its real and thriving economy. It is said that in-game intrigue has spilled over into the real world on occasion, as the corporations and alliances in EVE take their business very seriously. No other game can compare with EVE Online’s depth, nuance, complicated diplomacy, and expansive space battles.

Final Verdict

There are countless free MMORPG games that you can find online, but the above-mentioned are some of the best games we picked for you. If you feel like making a streaming video out of it, check the video below.

TOP 10 best free MMORPG

Greetings freeloaders and freeloaders! Do you like to travel around the fantasy world, capture castles along the way, weighing monsters down with cradles, and not pay a single ruble? If yes, then you will like this TOP 10 free MMORPG.

12. Lineage 2

It’s hard to find a modern gamer who has never heard of Lineage 2 . The studio of the founders of this game is located in Korea. NCSoft has revealed to the world the story that unfolds on the continent of Aden. It contains the southern kingdom of Aden and the northern kingdom of Elmore. Events are intertwined 150 more before the events of the first part. The gamer chooses one of the many unique professions to his taste (each has its own pluses and minuses). You can join a guild, you can travel and fight alone as you please. This whole idea was implemented with mind and soul, which confirms the presence of gamers on the servers.

Read also our review of Lineage 2.

11. Wizardry Online

In tenth place we have a hardcore game where players are invited to explore deep dangerous dungeons, in which you will find not only dangerous creatures, but also dozens of traps .

If other massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG) try their best to help the player, then Wizardry Online will try their best to kill you. For this, everything you need is here: a free PvP system, common dungeons where players stay in search of profit, and the complete death of a character.

So if you are tired of sitting in another vanilla MMO game, and you want real hardcore, then you are here.

10. Royal Quest

The game gives you the opportunity to ride big dragons, set your opponents on fire and generally feel like a sort of attack fighter.

After all, the main focus of the game is on the air combat system, so you will have a great opportunity to fly dragons.

But before releasing your pet from the hangar, it will need to be raised, so the player will have something to do in between doing quests and going through dungeons.

In general, the gameplay of the game based on the pet system is quite fun.

8. Dragon Nest

Living proof that the developers have finally stopped cloning World Warcraft and are doing what is actually fun, namely items, monsters and ultimates.

There are no usual boss fights, a large virtual world and fighting between factions. Instead, the game is broken up into large, portal-connected maps, most of which have players in squads of 4 walking and smashing monsters in a circle.

The passage of levels here is elevated to the rank of art, sport, self-improvement. After clearing the level and killing the boss, the player receives a reward depending on how long the combinations of blows were, how quickly all life was destroyed — and all this is shown in a detailed report. All this encourages players to go through the same level dozens of times, because they really want to go through it with a “super” rating.

7. Black Gold Online

Fantasy and steampunk, whimsically mixed in the world of this game, make it truly unique.

Black Gold Online is, on the one hand, a world of picturesque forest villages with rich roofs and suede mountains, carved with battlements of fortress walls, and on the other hand, it is a world in which you can climb into a mech robot and go in shooter mode to destroy everything alive from a machine gun.

Flights on dragons and forest mounts are combined with helicopter flying and motorbike riding. And the refined and refined clothes of forest dwellers with horned and spiked armor for boys and armored sexy costumes for girls.

The plot in such games, as always, is present for show. The world is in danger, but the texts of quests are better to read, and not to flip through.

In short, this is a truly new online multiplayer game that has a number of unique and very tasty features, which you can learn more about in my review of Black Gold Online.

6. ArcheAge

Sandbox MMO from Korea. This project is the most promising. Mainly because only here you can build a ship, go to sea on it, sink a couple of enemy ships and, having found some virgin island, settle on it with all the loot. And having built a house and planted a tree, be prepared for the invasion of uninvited guests.

The world of ArchAge itself consists of huge continents, each of which could accommodate a separate online game. The continents, as in the real world, are surrounded on all sides by the seas, which, like the land, are a play area that is simply teeming with pirates and krakens.

There are islands scattered here and there in the seas, available for exploration, so if you are looking for adventure, then you are here.

Read more about the game in the ArcheAge review.

5. Blood and Soul

BS is a game based on PvP and communication between players. It is free and fully translated into Russian.

The graphics in Blood and Soul are very nice and meet all modern requirements. Beautifully animated water, trees, landscapes.

But the main advantage of the game, in addition to being free, is its phenomenal popularity in Russia. All 11 servers are packed to capacity. Not every free MMORPG can boast such a large number of players. And this means that here you can always find a company for a joint trip to the dungeon or to clash in the battle for the possession of resources.

You can fight in large-scale guild territory battles and arena tournaments, create things and freely trade them, fish or mine valuable resources, arrange lavish weddings, and so on.

Read all about the merits of this game in the review Blood and Soul

4. Karos Online

Everyone knows the game, which is not very far away from the usual canons. Every person who has ever played an MMORPG will immediately get used to it and understand what’s what.

Still, Karos Online contains a number of features. Firstly, these are wars for castles and mines. Here they look like large-scale clashes involving dozens, if not hundreds of players.

The game fully justifies the time spent at the trade counter in the square or in the clearing with the destruction of monsters along the way.

So if you’re an avid Lineage or WoW nerd and want something similar, but with better graphics and more features, but don’t want to understand all the subtleties of other games, then this game will definitely appeal to you.

Read more about the game in the review of Karos Online.

3. Aion

What can this game boast of?

In addition to air battles and excellent graphics, it can show off excellent customization of the game character, with which you can create an absolutely unique appearance. Here you can change a lot of parameters — from the shape of the nose and the shape of the eyes to the thickness of the shoulders and height.

Of course, the creators of the game made the main emphasis on air battles, so after level 10 you grow wings, with the help of which it becomes much faster and more interesting to move around the world.

The game is elegant and aesthetic, but the infernal grind and the need to go around the same quests are tiring.

Read more about the game in the review of Aion.

2. Blade and Soul

Don’t confuse it with Blood and Soul — it’s a completely different game. Already from the first beta trailers of the game, it became obvious to many that the project was doomed to success. After all, no one is involved in the game, but the company that published Lineage 2 and Aion. These guys certainly know how to make popular games.

Here we have, as usual, the most magnificent open world, made in the style of Asian countries.

It is worth noting that there are only four races in the game. At the same time, the kun race makes it possible to create only female characters.

There are also four classes in the game — not so many, but they are very interesting. There is also everyone’s favorite swordsman — the master of one big sword. There is also force mater , which means simply a magician. Also in the game there is a destroyer class — by and large, berserkers familiar to us. Well, the most interesting class is the kung fu master — a class that fights without weapons at all, that is, in hand-to-hand combat.

The skills here look quite exciting. The game is quite different from all existing MMORPGs today and promises to gain popularity due to its combat system and amazing jumps in the style of the movie «Hidden Tiger, Crouching Dragon». That is, players can simply run through trees, sagging rocks, or even just fly, violating every conceivable law of physics.

The characters in the game are sickeningly cute. As pets, we are offered either a fluffy cat with huge eyes, or an equally cute little mouse. In general, it still could not do without Korean stamps, and therefore only the tenth place.

1. Neverwinter Online

Neverwinter is one of the most famous cities in the D&D universe, which is simply huge. It captivates with the beauty of streets, lanes and the noise of gambling squares.

The game mechanics in this game are unexpectedly easy to learn, they don’t tie you down with a bunch of conventions and barriers, but at the same time make you think through your actions.

Thanks to the popular non-target system, you need to aim at the enemies yourself, and with a successful slide, performed on time, you can successfully evade the enemy’s attack.

Role-players will be especially interested in a fascinating plot, which exists here not just for show, but is the basis of this game. Therefore, at least you are waiting for the exposition, the plot and the climax. Yes, and ordinary gamers will find something to do here.

Based on standard elements, quests, solo and group dungeons, PvP arenas, we have a game that can keep you busy for many days. There is always something like a promotion going on here. At first, we are offered to go through some kind of dungeon, craft in an hour, then pay attention to PvP — all of course for additional rewards. Thus, the developers do not allow the player to get hung up on one thing and get tired of the monotony.

In general, the presence of modern graphics, a combat system, a good storyline and absolute free-to-play — puts this game in first place in our top free MMORPGs.

How to register and play this miracle, see my review of Neverwinter Online.

Top Free MMORPG on PC and Mobile — Plarium

In the world of modern gaming, there is something for everyone, whether it’s action-packed shooters or casual puzzle games on PC. But, if you are interested in games that you can immerse yourself in and play with other users, pay attention to the MMORPG genre.

The best MMORPG games can be really exciting. And with the growing popularity of free-to-play MMORPGs, you don’t even have to pay for them!

A few years ago, free-to-play MMORPG games were the most common on PC, but today new MMORPG games on mobile are becoming more and more popular.

What are MMORPG games?

MMORPG stands for Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game. Such games are a type of role-playing game in which the player assumes the role of a certain character or controls several characters in a virtual world. To achieve game goals, characters need to be developed and pumped.

Top MMORPG games rely on active gaming communities where players from all over the world play online at the same time. A significant part of the gameplay of MMORPG games is based on social interactions, so these games cannot thrive without a strong player base. Users can face each other in various game modes, as well as join forces and form clans — this gives access to special events or additional rewards.

The best MMORPG games are designed to maximize the value of these interactions and add depth to the gameplay. The best free-to-play MMORPGs of the last decade do this with new clan events that enthrall audiences. The developers of some new MMORPGs, especially in the collectible game genre, have gone further and even introduced PvP modes to spice up the game.

History of MMORPGs

MMORPG games are very popular these days, but they have been around for a long time. Below we will talk about how this genre has developed and how it turned out that users from all over the world play the top MMORPG.

Origins of MMORPGs

MMORPGs originated as a web-based offshoot of the then-popular tabletop role-playing games. The first online game with virtual reality appeared in 1974. It was originally implemented by connecting two computers with a serial cable, but later the game was adapted for ARPANET.

In the 1980s, the genre of MUD games (multiplayer games with a virtual world) began to develop — they are considered the forerunners of modern MMORPGs. That same year, Essex University students developed the first multiplayer game and launched it on the ARPANET. Like many early MMORPGs influenced by her, this MUD game was text-based. The first massively multiplayer online role-playing game with graphics came out at 1991, and since then the best MMORPGs have become more and more developed.

The quality of graphics and gameplay has increased tremendously, and the development of the Internet has opened up even more opportunities to improve the gaming experience. Thanks to the advent of free-to-play MMORPGs in the late 90s, they became even more accessible, which allowed them to attract an audience from all over the world. The incredible popularity of this genre and huge gaming communities — that’s what became the key to the massive phenomenon of MMORPG games.

What are the top free and premium MMORPG games today?

Today, the range of browser-based MMORPGs is wide and exciting. New MMORPG games include many innovations and elements from other game genres. The same can be said about MMORPGs that are just getting ready for release.

New methods of monetizing MMORPGs, as well as a growing base of paying players, lead to the fact that there are more and more MMORPGs that do not require payment in advance. However, they offer in-game purchases that enhance the gaming experience. In addition, browser-based MMORPG games are not inferior in quality to the best AAA-class games. Thus, online browser games do not require additional resources, and you can enjoy the game without taking up disk space.

Like other big game genres, MMORPGs have spawned many sub-genres. Let’s consider the main ones.

Collectible MMORPGs

This sub-genre has exploded in popularity, and many upcoming MMORPG games to look forward to are developed in it. As the name implies, in these MMORPGs, players need to collect collections of characters as well as items and upgrade them in order to fight in battles. A unique feature of the top MMORPG games in this sub-genre is the presence of asynchronous PvP modes in which players do not compete in real time. You can control the team by attacking the enemy, but this option is not available while defending. Instead, you need to choose a team that will defend, and the battle itself will take place according to artificial intelligence algorithms.

Survival simulators

Staying alive is the main task in this online MMORPG subgenre. Players need to collect resources and essentials in order to survive in difficult or hostile environments, as well as against programmed opponents and other players. Item loss and wear is a key mechanic in this sub-genre, as it encourages players to loot opponents and boosts the in-game economy.

Sand boxes

Some of the best free MMORPGs can be found in this sub-genre. Sandboxes are typically open-world games with extensive maps, giving players plenty of choice in how they play. Ultimately, only you decide where to go and what to do. The entire player base is usually in the same virtual world, and since crafting and trading are key features of MMORPG sandboxes, the best ones often have a living economy.

What should be the best MMORPG games?

There are a lot of quality MMORPG games online today, and many more are on the way. With so much variety, it can be hard to choose where to start. Let’s talk about the characteristics of the best MMORPG games.

Great graphics

Popular new MMORPG games tend to have incredible graphics and immersiveness, thanks to their detailed textures.

Incredible environments

High-quality graphics make the best MMORPG games (both free and paid) boast impressive gaming environments. Whether you plan to play for hours or just occasionally, the game worlds of the best MMORPGs will give you the feeling of complete immersion.

Interesting characters

Regardless of whether you play free MMORPGs on PC or other platforms, you can find incredible characters in games of this genre. Top MMORPG games offer a variety of characters with a variety of skills. Upcoming MMORPG games are also developing hero customization options to give players more options while playing.

A sense of community

In MMORPGs (both free and premium) you can interact with a lot of real players. The most popular MMORPGs are played by a lot of users at the same time, so you can choose who to compete with and who to join forces with.

Three reasons to play MMORPG games

Free and paid MMORPGs always have a lot to offer. Here are three reasons to try MMORPG games right now.
