Final Fantasy VIII it’s one of the all-time best J-RPG created by Square Enix, modern or classic. It showed an amazing courage to make things different, with it’s own visual style, a wonderful OST… There are lots of things that make this a truly classics, all present in the remaster, even if some, like backgrounds, deserved a better treatment.

It’s easy to see why Final Fantasy VIII is considered one of the series’ most divisive entries, but its story and gameplay systems remain unique 20 years after its original release. Final Fantasy VIII Remastered has its flaws — the draw system is still a total pain in the arse — but there’s a magic and atmosphere to Squall’s often mental adventure that’s incredibly endearing. This is a PlayStation classic given a new lease of life, and it’s still way more interesting than the majority of Japanese RPGs hitting our consoles today.

Final Fantasy 8 Remastered Gets Comparison Screenshots And New Features

The remaster is looking pretty good.

After years of absence from modern platforms, even as its contemporaries saw re-releases/remakes/remasters, Final Fantasy 8 is finally getting its time in the sun with a new remaster that’s coming out to all major platforms. How much of an upgrade is it? Well, we have some information and screenshots for it, and it’s looking pretty good.

You can check out the two comparison screenshots below that contrasts this version to the original PlayStation release. It definitely manages to earn the title of remaster here as the new game looks significantly more detailed than the PS1 original.

As far as new features, Square Enix says the game will see similar QoL tweaks that the other PlayStation Final Fantasy games (7 and 9) re-releases have gotten with the ability to speed up the game up to 3x the original speed, a battle assist mode that lets you to max out your HP and ATB and the ability to turn off random encounters.

Final Fantasy 8 Remastered will release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC sometime this year.
