description, content, interesting facts and much more about the cartoon

  • This is the first computer animated film with photorealistic characters.
  • All backgrounds are hand painted.
  • Aki Ross was featured on Maxim’s 2001 «Hot 100» list and featured on the cover of an extra insert. She is the only currently non-existent person on this list.
  • The total production time of the film was over four years. By the time the final shots were taken, some of the previous shots had to be redone as they no longer fit. In addition, the software used to create them has become more advanced and it has become possible to achieve greater detail. nine0004
  • Due to the film’s poor box office performance, Square Pictures announced its exit from the film business in October 2001. However, the studio released the short film The Animatrix: The Last Flight of Osiris (2003) in a Final Fantasy-like realistic CGI style that was released in theaters before Dreamcatcher (2003) and was released as the first in a series of short films called «Animatrix» (2003).
  • Dr. Aki Ross’s hair is only half as thick as the average person’s, yet 60,000 strands were made for realistic movement. During the development of computer graphics, a fifth of the time was devoted to this hair. nine0004
  • Prior to the film’s release, there were rumors that photorealistic computer «actors» would revolutionize filmmaking. The news has reported plans that the «digital actress» used for Aki Ross will appear in another film or possibly be included in a live-action production with real actors. The film’s box office failure put these plans on hold, however the scene created for the special edition DVD does show Aki and other FF characters interacting with real people. nine0004
  • For fun, the producers created a music video in which the characters (led by Aki) perform the dance from Michael Jackson’s «Thriller» video (1983).
  • In keeping with the tradition of characters named Sid in the Final Fantasy series, there is Sid in the film, played by Donald Sutherland. He also owns an airship.
  • As of 2015, this movie is the highest rated video game adaptation on Rotten tomatoes with 44%.
  • After filming and initial animation were completed, the finished scenes were fed into the «render farm» computer network (consisting of 960 separate Pentium III-933 MHz workstations) and processed into separate frames. During this rendering process, textures and extremely fine details created by the network cluster were added to the raw animation. Each frame has twice the resolution of a high-definition television signal and contains 10 megabytes of data.
  • Remington Scott’s motion capture work in Final Fantasy led to him being hired to create Gollum for the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which helped spread the use of motion capture technology in Hollywood. nine0004
  • When the film received digital projection (Texas Instruments DLP), it became the first film ever to include a «real» 8-channel Sony SDDS soundtrack. «Prototypes» of 8-channel audio tracks have been used by SDDS since 1993, but the track for this movie is considered the format’s first perfect standard.
  • The Seiko wrist watch worn by Aki Ross (known as the «halo on the wrist»), which creates a map of New York, is a digital recreation of a real Seiko watch made especially for the film. A different design was presented to the public with numerous cosmetic changes. nine0004
  • During pre-production, the script had 50 versions. In one of them was a small child named Meg, who played a much larger role in the overall story. In the final version of the film, the fifth spirit was taken from a terminally ill child. This is the only reference to Meg left in the film. Other characters not included in the final cut include a boy named Daniel and a fifth member of the Deep Eyes squad named Robert.
  • The World Trade Center Twin Towers do not appear in any of the New York shots (with the exception of the concept art on the DVD). nine0004
  • In early storyboards, Ryan Whitaker’s character (voiced by Ving Rhames) was equipped with a cybernetic right arm, which may be a reference to the video game Fainaru fantajî VII (1997).
  • Matt McKenzie, the major’s voice, is the only actor in the film who also contributed to the Final Fantasy game: he would later voice Euron in Fainaru fantajî X (2001) and its sequel Fainaru fantajî X-2 (2003) .
  • Male lead Matt Dillon visited Square’s animation studio in Honolulu, saw the finished shots for his character — realizing for the first time how photorealistic they needed to be — and ran out of the building, yelling that Square was trying to «put the actors out of business.» He was replaced by Alec Baldwin. nine0004
  • A party of four is a reference to the Final Fantasy series where in six out of ten games a party can only have four members, despite the fact that there are usually more than five heroes.
  • In an early version of the script, Sid and Aki were originally grandfather and granddaughter. Aki’s surname was also different: she was originally Aki Shishido. Relationships and names were changed so late that many of the animators and staff were not even aware of the change until the film was almost finished.
  • Serial number 102171 on the side of the «Black Boa» is the date of birth of one of the artists who created the design and texture of the ship.
  • Talking about Final Fantasy and its digital heroes, Tom Hanks said that he was very concerned about it, but everything is going on as usual, and he is not sure that the actors can do something about it.
  • Poor box office performance in theaters led to the closure of Square Pictures. After 2 years, this led to the merger of Squaresoft and Enix, which became Square-Enix in 2003. Four years later, in 2005, another Final Fantasy movie was made called Final Fantasy 7: Advent Children, released only on DVD and Blu-ray. nine0004
  • This was the first Final Fantasy not worked on by series composer Nobuo Uematsu, the man who wrote the music for all ten games in the series (with the exception of «Fainaru fantajî takutikkusu» (1997), composed by Masanari Iwata/Hitoshi Sakimoto). His music is so beloved by fans that by popular demand it is often released on standalone CDs.
  • When Aki Ross looks out over old New York, the map on her wrist computer is a real map of Times Square.
  • Directorial debut and only film by Hironobu Sakaguchi. nine0004
  • Columbia Pictures’ first animated film to have theatrical release since Care Bears 2: The Next Generation (1986).
  • During the conference scene where Hine and Sid are discussing how to kill phantoms. Some of the faces in the audience were modeled after the backstage staff.
  • Before Elliot Goldenthal was brought in to write the score, the film was made from James Horner’s score for Titanic (1997). The verses from «A Promise Kept» were borrowed from the original opening scene, which can be found on the Special Edition DVD. nine0004
  • The day and month shown after Aki’s first dream (December 13) is the birthday of director Hironobu Sakaguchi’s wife.
  • The film takes place in 2065.
  • Steve Buscemi dubbed two revolutionary CGI films in one year — Final Fantasy (2001) (the first photorealistic CGI film) and Monsters, Inc. (2001) (which had photorealistic mech).
  • First computer animated film to receive a PG-13 rating from the MPAA.
  • For Steve Buscemi, this was the first experience of dubbing in a film. nine0004
  • James Woods and Keith David’s second animated film together after Hercules (1997) four years earlier.
  • Jeff Vintar was about to write a script for a remake of The Lady from Shanghai for Columbia Pictures when an executive asked him to read the script for Final Fantasy. The studio did not understand what kind of project it was. They just knew it needed to be rewritten and asked Vintar to do their best in two weeks. Vintar read the draft and said they needed to start from scratch. He said they didn’t need to hire a screenwriter for two weeks. They need to hire someone who can work on the project for six months or a year! The studio replied that Vintar could work for three weeks. Then he agreed and rewrote the entire script in three weeks. He never imagined that what he would write would be translated into Japanese and then translated back into English, resulting in the dialogue sounding sloppy. Speaking about the project now, Vintar notes that Sakaguchi and his team were indeed entering uncharted territory: photorealistic human beings. James Cameron himself went to look at the studio in Honolulu and, seeing their progress, realized that he would never be the first. Vintar noted that it was 2001 and the film itself was science fiction. Unfortunately, his passionate project to remake «The Lady from Shanghai» attracted Brendan Fraser, who wanted to star alongside Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones, but at the last minute, the John Woo-produced project was canceled by Amy Pascal, who wanted to focus on teen films. . nine0004
  • Columbia Pictures’ first computer-animated film.
  • This is Alec Baldwin and Steve Buscemi’s first animated film together, their next film will be The Boss Baby (2017) 16 years later.
  • Ming-Na Wen’s second fully animated film after Mulan (1998).
  • Alec Baldwin voiced the character for the first time in a movie.
  • Keith David (original Council member) and Ving Rhames (Ryan) would later work with Oprah Winfrey in animated films such as The Princess and the Frog (2009) and «Star» (2017), respectively.
  • The second computer-animated film after Shrek (2001) to be released and based on existing material and/or works.
  • Ving Rheims’ first voice acting experience.
  • John Sigan’s only theatrical film to receive a PG-13 rating. All of Saigan’s theatrical films were rated G or PG, with Sausage Party (2016), released 15 years later, rated R.
  • James Woods reprized his role as Hades from Hercules in the Kingdom Hearts franchise, which also features the characters from the Final Fantasy franchise. nine0004
  • In the final cut of the movie, the dramatic message that Aki is pregnant is removed from the dialogue, although visually it can be seen that when the Illusive Man’s tentacles enter her body, the tentacle in her womb changes color. Her embryo is the eighth and final spirit, although the viewer is unaware of this in the final part of the film. «I understand,» says Dr. Sid, smiling, but the viewer doesn’t get it. Gray’s sacrifice to save Aki should have been even more significant when you know that he sacrifices himself not only for the sake of the woman he loves, but also for the sake of their unborn child.
