The iconic Final Fantasy VII holds a special place in the hearts of many fans and those players who started their gaming career in the distant 90s. Combining cutting-edge technology, an unusual setting, a powerful story, great music, and addictive gameplay, Hironobu Sakaguchi’s team revolutionized the genre, defining its face for years to come.

FF7 has rightly become one of the greatest and most influential games of the golden era of the industry, which is strongly associated with the brand PlayStation . Competitors actively tried to copy the success formula, borrowing plot elements, characters’ personalities and entire mechanics, but could not come close to the masters from Square .

With large budgets and an impressive staff of talented designers, the publisher was able to set up a jRPG production engine that worked like clockwork, delighting a growing army of fans, until the collapse of the development team after the failure of the first Final Fantasy animated film turned up all the cards. nine0003

The new hope is a full-fledged remake of FFVII , which fans have believed in since 2003, when Square Enix unexpectedly announced “ Compilation of Final Fantasy VII ”. Speculation was fueled by a flashy tech demo of the PlayStation 3 from Sony’s infamous launch at E3 2005. Of course, there was no real action from SE. As a result, the compilation includes: the mobile game Before Crisis from the future creator of FFXV Hajime Tabata, a full-fledged sequel to Final Fantasy VII in the form of a beautiful animated film Advent Children from Tetsuya Nomura and Visual Works, an anime from the Madhouse studio — Last Order, a very strange third-person shooter Dirge of Cerberus for PS2, as well as a full-fledged Action-RPG prequel for PSP — Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII — also from Tabata. nine0003

Unexpectedly for everyone Final Fantasy VII Remake was announced, but only at E3 2015, after which fans had to wait another five years before the game went on sale. And now, finally, this moment has come.

Remake welcomes us with the traditional «Prelude» composed by composer Nobuo Uematsu for the very first part. The start screen replicates the original with a blue menu and the iconic Buster Sword sticking out of the ground against a black background. All this causes pleasant feelings of nostalgia and anticipation of the very game from the nineties. nine0003

The subsequent intro largely repeats the original intro, but the level of computer animation has stepped far ahead. This is clearly seen in the high definition and overall detail of the characters and environments. The cutscene smoothly transitions to the gameplay on the engine, delighting with advanced (especially within the genre) graphics.

As in the original, we play as the mercenary Cloud Strife. The hero must help the Avalanche eco-activists break into the Mako Reactor of the Shinra Electricity Corporation and blow it up. The company uses the life force of the planet for its own selfish purposes. The lifestream is rapidly fading away, and the lands of Gaia are turning into a lifeless desert. nine0003

While Cloud distracts the guards, the rest of the group silently sneaks up on the target. The interactive production masterfully combines gameplay and cutscenes in the best traditions of Final Fantasy, but at a modern level of performance. Visible transitions between all elements of the game, such as scripted scenes that happen right during gameplay, cutscenes, exploration and battles, have practically disappeared, which increased the overall level of entertainment. The gluing came out as accurate as possible, and the new combat system contributed to this in many respects. nine0003

In Final Fantasy VII Remake, the developers completely abandoned random battles with the obligatory transition to separate arenas. The system combines hitting mechanics like in games like Bayonetta , along with a classic ATV scale that uses a pause like Final Fantasy XII .

During the battle, characters can attack with standard and enhanced versions of attacks, dodge and block enemy attacks, but skills, magic, items, limits and summoning creatures can only be used when the special line is filled with at least one space. nine0003

The menu is called by pressing the “X” button and practically stops time, allowing you to see bullets frozen in the air and bursts of magical energy. You slowly think about tactics and choose the right action for each of the active heroes of the party.

Most skills require one gauge bar, but some particularly powerful skills may require multiple bars. ATB accumulates over time, but the process is noticeably accelerated when the characters create chains of attacks or successfully defend. nine0003

In addition, the player can assign shortcut keys to use the most common moves. This is very convenient and allows you not to stop the dynamic battle unnecessarily.

You can switch between heroes on the fly or command the actions of one character while controlling another. The fighters feel different, and each specializes in certain aspects. For example, Cloud is useful in close combat, and Barret is useful in ranged attacks using a prosthesis with a built-in minigun, helping out when enemies fly away from you for long distances. This, taking into account different opponents and strong bosses, brings the necessary variety and variability to the gameplay. nine0003

During battles, the camera can be attached to the selected enemy (or a point on his body), or rotated independently. When a character is fighting near a wall or a large object, the camera may not choose the most convenient angle, so sometimes it’s better to move it manually. Although the virtual operator behaves well in wide locations.

After years of searching and failed experiments, Square Enix has finally found the perfect balance between tactics and fast action

After years of searching and failed experiments, Square Enix has finally found the perfect balance between tactics and fast-paced action. The battles look spectacular, while not devoid of depth, which was so lacking Final Fantasy XV . To win, you’ll need to use materia to scan your enemies to find their weaknesses, but some things can only be determined through trial and error.

The game uses and adapts the idea of staggers from Final Fantasy XIII , allowing you to accumulate a stupor bar on enemies that, when full, not only stops them, but also destroys their armor. However, conditions may change. Some enemies are vulnerable to normal combos, others are vulnerable to strong, special or magic attacks. Some opponents can slow down if they unleash their attack on your well-timed block. Others lose their balance after taking a certain amount of damage. And so on. nine0003

Boss fights look incredibly spectacular and cinematic. The developers brilliantly combine the basic mechanics with beautiful animations and unique camera work. Square Enix does not reinvent the wheel, but uses the achievements of the series, but in the remake, staging big battles has reached a new level unprecedented for the genre.

Final Fantasy VII Remake forces the player to act all the time. Bosses actively use special attacks, motivating you to hide behind the debris of the environment, run away from the flow of water or electricity. Some of them are designed as a separate mini-game. For example, sections where you fight while sitting in a vehicle. Some of these battles clearly look like a reference to another work of Tetsuya Nomura’s team — Advent Children .

And, of course, the old cult enemies in the new version look just great. The developers were able to adapt even such unusual and insane enemies as Hell House to the new game design.

Initially, three difficulty levels are unlocked, the highest of which is Normal. The game carefully doses the mesh with a simple combination of attacks and the need to turn on the tactical mode. Battles with base opponents are mostly easy. But some boss fights and side quest enemies can really make you sweat. Without pre-setting the matter and competent management, poking into such fights is a deliberately failed idea. And this is where a handy rollback system to the moment right before the battle comes to the rescue. And in general, the new save system is very convenient and allows you to record progress anywhere, except for battles. nine0003

Of course, leveling is an important element of Final Fantasy VII Remake, but the studio has almost completely abandoned grinding. The character’s performance increases with his level, and also depends on the equipment.

Unique variants of swords, staves, gloves and miniguns have their own special attacks that can be learned from weapons. You use a skill in combat, level up a streak, gain valuable knowledge, and then you can switch to the next equipment. nine0003

In addition, for special points from killed enemies, you can upgrade weapons, raising the characteristics of the main or magical attack, protection from physical or magical damage, increase the amount of life, and so on. It looks like a solar system with a core in the center and planets around. Over time, new systems open with their bonuses.

It is important to note that weapon upgrade points are common for all types of this type of equipment for each individual character — even those that you have not received yet. But when used, they are not subtracted from the total value, but duplicated, allowing you to quickly improve each new sample. nine0003

For added convenience, the developers even made three settings for the automatic distribution of points received (balance, emphasis on attack, emphasis on defense) to minimize digging into the menu.

Equipment also has special slots for spheres of matter — important blobs of energy in the world of FFVII. Materia plays a huge role in character customization, as it gives magical powers, the ability to summon assistants into battles, unlocks bonuses to parameters, and even adds new combinations of attacks with the main weapon. Since the number of matter slots is always limited, it is necessary to correctly distribute them among the members of the squad. nine0003

Matter usually has several levels, and with regular use, the character unlocks more powerful effects. For example, if you often use the treatment, then at some point it will be possible to activate the regeneration spell. The matter of the elements (fire, ice, lightning, wind) works in exactly the same way, in which, one after another, a strengthened form opens.

Despite the fact that the costumes of the characters change only according to the plot, the weapons are displayed on the heroes along with the spheres of matter inserted into them. There is not much equipment, but with accessories you can easily customize the characters to suit your play style. nine0003

Visual overview based on the main features of the game and
is
addition to the main review.

An important difference from the original was the plot. Final Fantasy VII Remake is not just an adaptation of the classics to modern standards, but also a complete reworking of it with the addition of a new story. nine0003

The developers used the events of the cult game, inserting between them many new details and entire levels with their own history and unique moments. You will learn about how the Avalanche characters prepared for the attack on the second reactor, get to know Biggs (who now looks like Charlie Sheen), Wedge and Jesse, be surprised by the huge flying ghosts that Iris sees, you will laugh out loud from the chic music scene at Honey Bee Inn (it’s way cooler than the dancing Dante scene from Devil May Cry V ), not to mention new side quests with their own little stories.

Staging scenes, except for a couple of slightly strange moments, will delight all connoisseurs of cinema. Interesting angles and a competent change of plans help to feel the characters and enjoy the story.

Unfortunately, the company failed to fit everything into one release. So we’ll have to wait a few more years to see the finale.

After FFXV, a lot of people were worried about the level structure in Final Fantasy VII Remake, but it’s okay. Tetsuya Nomura’s team used a hybrid world design, in which corridor sections go hand in hand with compact sandboxes. The missions themselves are mostly linear with small branches and secrets, the search for which is rewarded with unique items and materiel. And settlements, like the city districts with the Avalanche headquarters, Iris’s house and the Wall Market quarter, are made in the form of open areas with dozens of characters. nine0003

People generally do not just stand still, but do something. Someone is painting the facade of the building, someone is carrying bags or barrels, regulars are sitting nearby in a cafe and listening to music, and a cat is watching them. Even on missions, you can notice that Shinra soldiers are trying to clear the area of mutants using service flamethrowers.

Of course, if you look closely, you will notice that the guy with the bag walks in circles, and other passers-by can absurdly bump into each other when their routes intersect. But, despite these small flaws, the atmosphere of the whole world is preserved. Largely due to the dialogues that people constantly lead around the main character. They discuss recent events, characters, or ask for help, which complements the plot and creates a sense of the living world, rather than cardboard scenery. nine0003

Side quests are displayed in a special menu and almost always have a convenient tracking system through green signs. Quests consist of several cutscenes with dialogues and unique events, and involve exploring the environment in search of certain characters or creatures. Due to the compactness of the zones and the convenient system of quickly returning to the quest giver, they do not take much time.

In addition, additional activities include errands from Chadley, who studies matter and asks you to perform certain actions as part of the battles with monsters. For example, make 20 scans. This runs in the background as you progress through the game and does not require manual activation or grinding, which is very convenient. For completing challenges, you get a chance to buy a unique materia at the lowest price. nine0003

Chadley also invites you to take part in spectacular VR duels against creatures to summon (PSVR is not needed for this — the character transports the heroes into a virtual space inside the game). If you win, you get a summon as a reward.

In general, most of the side activities in the game are well rewarded, so you should not skip them. Even exploring optional sections of story missions can lead to unexpected finds, like a new orb of matter with a powerful creature. nine0003

Despite all the splendor of the game, there are several problematic moments that can be disappointing. For example, some areas in locations can be covered with invisible walls and fences that cannot be jumped over. In some places, the developers beat the dimensions of the hero’s sword, which, due to its size, cannot reach it in narrow spaces, but then it, along with its hands, partially falls into the polygons.

Of course, all this can be attributed to conventions that do not interfere with enjoying the game, but what you definitely can’t justify is very uneven graphics. nine0003

Oftentimes, FFVIIR looks simply amazing, striking with an incredible level of character development, effects and details, which, together with chic staged battles and cutsens, make us doubt that we are facing a game and not an animated film in the spirit of Advent Children. But sometimes artists and programmers hit the bottom: textures can start to resemble projects from PS2 and PS3 , the environment starts to be full of angles, and the backs look like 2D backgrounds from the original game for PS1 . It can be seen that some textures simply do not load. We tried to reinstall the game on SSD , but the downloads still remain. Representatives of the publisher wrote to us that there will be a patch of the first day, but it is not yet clear what exactly it will change.

But the game works very stably and does not slow down in 4K -mode on PS4 Pro . Also, Final Fantasy XIII composer Masashi Hamauzu did an incredible job on the music. All original compositions were written by Nobuo Uematsu — they have long become classics. In the remake, favorite melodies sound not only accompanied by an orchestra, which gives the event an epic scale and monumentality, but also in various other arrangements. Here you can find well-known motives in the manner of reggae, hip-hop or power metal. nine0003

Due to the specifics of the gameplay, fan-favorite fanfares are heard here in exceptional cases and often in an unexpected key. I was very amused by the moment when the battles go one after another to the dynamically changing accompaniment of the orchestra, and after the victory, the famous motive is sung by one of the heroes.

In turn, the characters joke about the fact that it’s time for them to come up with victory stances to look better in the frame, and then after some time they do them after winning the coliseum. And by the way, their voices in the English version sound great. nine0003

Final Fantasy VII Remake is the game we’ve been waiting for from Square Enix . Atmospheric, interesting and captivating modern jRPG with an interesting story, luxurious staging and spectacular battles. To achieve the ideal, the project lacks only smoother graphics and all the content from the original release. If you were waiting for a turn-based classic in a new wrapper, then you will most likely be disappointed, as the game has been changed so much. Everyone else rejoices at the release of the first truly powerful single release from Square Enix’s in-house studio in years. What is Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and is it worth buying the Yuffie Kisaragi DLC

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and the Intermission add-on, the first DLC for last year’s remake of one of the best JRPGs in the industry, have arrived on PlayStation 5. We tell you what Square Enix has changed in the improved version of their game. And we explain how the addition about Yuffie Kisaragi turned out and whether it is worth buying. nine0290

Background to Final Fantasy VII Remake

Final Fantasy VII Remake is a remake of Final Fantasy VII, one of the most popular and most successful JRPGs in the gaming industry. The original was released on the PlayStation in 1997, appeared on the PC shortly after that, and already in the 2010s became available on PS4, iOS and Nintendo Switch. The seventh part of Final Fantasy was loved both for the gameplay with a well-developed turn-based combat system, and for the central characters, and for the fascinating story about the fight against the evil Shin-Ra corporation. nine0003

All this, however, eventually ceased to impress new players — largely because the original was technically and visually outdated. Talk about a remake that would allow Square Enix to significantly update the game began in the first half of the 2000s. But fans had to wait until 2015 for good news on this matter — that’s when Final Fantasy VII Remake was announced at E3.

  • Final Fantasy VII Remake review

The remake was released on PS4 in 2020. Rather, only the first part of the remake came out. The Square Enix project turned out to be so ambitious and large-scale that the developers, reworking and updating the game 1997 years old, decided to divide the story into several parts. There is no approach here: the 2020 remake, although dedicated only to the events that take place in the city of Midgard (in the original, it is about a quarter of the entire game), it can still easily take the player for tens of hours. The fact is that the authors of the remake have significantly expanded the plot familiar to fans and filled the updated version of the RPG with additional content. The second part of the remake is already in development.

How Intergrade differs from the original Final Fantasy VII Remake

Intergrade is an improved version of Final Fantasy VII Remake, created with all the features of PS5 in mind. In the re-release, Square Enix tightened up the graphics, improved the quality of textures (and got rid of problems with their untimely reloading), and also added support for 4K and HDR resolutions and the ability to choose one of two graphics settings. With the first one, Intergrade runs at 60 FPS, but with a slightly lower resolution, and with the second, at 30 FPS, but with 4K resolution.

In a word, the usual upgrade for the new generation of consoles came out. If you’ve already purchased the PS4 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake, you’ll get the Intergrade upgrade for free by downloading the update. True, this does not apply to the version from the March PS Plus collection — if you then took the remake for free by subscription, you will not be able to update it. nine0003

In addition, Square Enix, along with Intergrade, released the first expansion for Final Fantasy VII Remake, Intermission. It focuses on the adventures of the ninja Yuffie Kisaragi and is available exclusively on PS5. That is, you cannot update the PS4 version of the remake and get the DLC — in this case, the addon will have to be purchased separately. Another option is to purchase the entire Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for PS5. This bundle includes both the improved remake and the expansion.

What is Yuffie Kisaragi 9 Intermission about?0294

Yuffie Kisaragi is a young and mischievous girl, a ninja from the city of Wutai, suffering under the yoke of the same Shin-Ra corporation. In the original Final Fantasy VII, she was one of the minor and, frankly, far from the most important character, but 23 years later, she was dedicated to a separate DLC lasting 5-7 hours.

Yuffie arrives in Midgar to infiltrate the Shin-Ra headquarters and find a special power mater there (matter is one of the main resources in the game’s story). So the girl hopes to annoy the villains from the corporation and help her hometown. Yuffie’s story is divided into two chapters: in the first, she will go to the slums of Sector 7, where the eco-terrorists’ hideout is located, and in the second, she will go to the corporate headquarters. Most of the time, the ninja will be accompanied by a new character — Sonon, a brave warrior and countryman Yuffie. The girl will also meet with the main characters of the main story (with everyone except Cloud), but will not unite with them. nine0003

There are no fundamental changes in the gameplay of Intermission compared to the original remake, but the combat system is still well diversified due to the abilities of Yuffie and her partner Sonon. The main character turned out to be quite fragile, so it is assumed that her companion will take the main share of the damage — he even has the “Instigation” ability for this, which directs the next three enemy attacks on Sonon. Yuffie herself fights with the help of shuriken: in close combat, she beats enemies with them, and at a long distance she throws weapons at the enemy, using ninjutsu magic at this time. A separate moment is the synergy of attacks by Yuffie and Sonon: after pressing L2, the partner begins to repeat all the blows after the companion. Synergy is also enhanced by special attacks — their heroes do together. Sonon, for example, can throw Yuffie up and give her acceleration to hit. In this case, however, the ATB scale accumulates much more slowly, so you should use synergy only at the most opportune moments. nine0003

Intermission also included a couple of side quests designed to diversify Yuffie’s adventures in Sector 7. In addition, especially for the add-on, the developers came up with a mini-game «Fort Condor» — this is a rather exciting real-time strategy with indirect control. That is, the main character cannot control the units directly — she only places them on the playing field. At the same time, units are divided into three types according to the “rock-paper-scissors” principle: ranged fighters are effective against defenders, defenders, in turn, are best at dealing with attackers, and attackers should be released against ranged fighters.
