Saving the World One Little Mission at a Time
A fun little game. Very simple in terms of gameplay, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The characters you get on your team are sometimes funny when you least expect it. (Like berserker class missing a huge target with their rocket launcher-«crap balls!») Worth a play.

Those truly interested in this should just watch an episode of Falling Skies and then play a mission of XCOM as this mixture works about as well as oil and vinegar and diazepam.

Falling Skies picked a fun, unique genre to hitch its wagon to, but it’s woefully behind the curve. There’s not enough of the television series in it to make it interesting, and frequent strategists will breeze through it in a weekend. The end result is a game without an audience.

Game session «Falling skies». Scenario «The Great Revolt». | all about board games
Falling Sky. Scenario «The Great Revolt».
Falling Skies is the sixth game in the COIN series from board game developer Volko Runke and is dedicated to the uprising of the Gauls in the 50s BC. against Roman domination. Players have to lead and lead to victory the troops of the Romans or one of the three Gallic alliances — Arverni, Belgi, Aedui. «Heaven» is designed for 1-4 players, the missing human players can be replaced with algorithmic players. The fifth faction — the Germans — is controlled simultaneously by the algorithm and the Belg player. The confrontation unfolds on the territory of modern France and adjacent lands. Wooden pieces of different colors and shapes represent leaders (cylinders), Gallic tribes (discs), legions (cubes), Roman auxiliaries or Gallic detachments (hexagonal prisms), Gallic citadels (diamonds), Roman field camps (squares). nine0005
Heaven, like the rest of the COIN series, is built on a card engine with a struggle for dominance over areas of the map. There are two main differences between this game and its twins from COIN. First, in «Heaven» Volko Runke used the fifth faction controlled by the algorithm for the first time. Secondly, separate chips for faction leaders appeared here for the first time. A minor change affected the movement. Now players first pay for the original movement area, and then the troops disperse from it where necessary. In other COIN games, on the contrary, the final area is paid, where troops arrive from several adjacent ones. nine0005
The highlight of the COIN games is the concept of hidden and unhidden troops. A hidden chip indicates as yet undiscovered enemy forces. Such chips have a number of advantages: they can rob, attack from ambushes, deal damage with impunity to enemy columns passing by. After completing the action, the token becomes revealed and flips to the side with the faction symbol. To become hidden again, the troops must complete the March. In «Heaven» only prism chips can be hidden. Legions represented by cubes are always revealed. Which is logical, because the Roman infantry dominates the theater of operations, openly moves along the roads and does not hide in the bushes. nine0005
The starting conditions, game properties and objectives of each faction in Heaven are different. Players must each have their own score by the start of the «winter phase» to win. Winter here comes unpredictably for the players, usually every 10-15 event cards.
To play «Falling Skies» we agreed to meet live, and it was supposed to be an event worthy of a Guinness record: four military boarders gathered live in Arkhangelsk! But, something went wrong, one participant fell off, and the three of us had to play. Therefore, the scenario for three was chosen: “The Great Revolt” (The Great Revolt). This scenario begins in the spring of 52 BC, when the rebellious Belgae were just defeated by Caesar. Therefore, one player can take control of two factions at once: the numerous, growing Arverns and the greatly weakened Belga. To win, the Belgo-Arvernian player must simultaneously secure the first and second prizes for his subordinates. The number of event cards for the scenario was chosen as the smallest — thirty pieces. This allowed each player up to 15 turns, as only two factions normally play each card. For an introductory scenario, this is enough, because all three of us saw the game for the first time. Also in this scenario, there are two winters, so there are only two victory point counts. nine0005
The great Gaulish uprising began with betrayal. The first event card revealed was «Litaviccus», and the faction making the first move was the Eduan League. The Aedui is the weakest militarily union of the Gallic tribes. But the richest. Living on the border with the Romans allows these sneaky guys to make a profit from the trade in imported knick-knacks. The Aedui played the event «The Arvern’s Cunning Revealed», immediately lured four Arvern units to their side and took away four resources from their Gallic counterparts. In the future, the Aedui will tell that they are innocent victims, that they were the first to not attack anyone. But we won’t believe them. All moves are recorded! nine0005
The first card in the game is « Litaviccus «. At the top of the map, the turn order of the factions is shown. The blue Aedui go first, then the green Arverni, the red Romans, and the yellow Belgae. But no more than two factions per map. Usually, the card allows you to play two events that are opposite in meaning. In this case, the Edui, as expected, played the top one. The remaining deck is visible on the right. Players always see the current and next map for planning purposes. The photo shows that the next card will be « Aquitani .
General view of the playing field after the first move of the Aedui. In the center of Gaul, a grouping of red legions is visible. In the lower part, in the area Provincia , a high red cylinder with a golden eagle is visible — this is Caesar at the head of reinforcements of six auxiliaries. Green Arverns are collected in two large groups. The four former green Arverni units, succumbed to the ringing of the Aeduan coins, have already turned blue. A tall green top hat with a red boar is the chief Vercingetorig (emphasis on the second letter E). The blue detachments of the Aedui are clustered in the center of Gaul and border on the Roman Province. The yellow units of the Belgians are scattered along the upper edge of the field. At the top right, a tall yellow cylinder is visible — this is the nameless leader of the Belgae, who gathered the troops defeated by Caesar across the Rhine, in Germany. A few black chips are Germans. Unfortunately for their Belgian relatives, the Germans are still very few in number and cannot help in the battles. nine0036
The next move belonged to the Arverns. But the Arverns gave in and handed him over to the Romans. This allowed the Arverns to be the first to go on the next map to play the event and get an additional ability at the very beginning of the game — the ability to recruit Nythiobrig riders into their ranks.
The event from the first map has already been played by the Aedui, so the Romans launched the first offensive in this game on the playing field. The Roman Republic has the strongest troops in Gaul. Which is not surprising. Here you have auxilia, and legions, and the ability to build field camps in any area, and the ability to use modern siege machines. And most importantly, the Romans have Caesar, who doubles the strength of his legionnaires in battle. Plus, Roman troops are the fastest in the game. The weaknesses of the Romans are their small numbers and high cost of action. On their first move, the Romans, expecting an uprising from day to day, decided to gain a foothold in the very heart of Gaul and from there to strike at all dissatisfied. Caesar with reinforcements left the Province and moved north to his legions, simultaneously conducting reconnaissance of neighboring regions. The Aedui could theoretically pursue and inflict damage on the passing Romans, but the Aedui, firmly embarking on the path of the traitors, provided Caesar with a safe passage. nine0005
The following card was played as an event by the Arverns. They acquired the ability to call on additional units to their ranks. On the one hand, this decision was correct, because the whole game is still ahead, but on the other hand, the scenario is too short, so the Arverns could only use their new ability once. The Arverni are the main driving force behind the Gauls uprising. Their young leader Vercingetorig, thanks to his oratorical skills, is able to quickly increase the number of allies. In addition, Vercingetorix enforces Roman discipline among his fellow tribesmen, which allows his troops to move faster than other Gauls. For the sake of victory, he can order the burning of his own settlements in order to undermine the supply of opponents and delay their advance. Vercingetorig was one of the first in history to use scorched earth tactics against the enemy. The weak point of the Arverns is low military training. Therefore, the Arverns decided not to rush the uprising, and they planned to devote the first game year to the accumulation of military power. nine0005
The card with the additional Arvern ability was not discarded after being played, but taken by the player until the end of the game.
Finally, it was the turn of the Belgians. The Belgae are the most warlike of the Gauls. There is a relationship with the Germans. Their leader Ambiorig (emphasis on the last syllable) is a brave commander. But, alas, after the defeat by Caesar, no one else saw the Belgian commander. Most likely, Ambiorig has been feasting with the forefathers for a long time. Therefore, the successor of Ambiorix now led the Belgae. The only advantage of this nameless leader is that he can also command the Germans, but only in one area with him. The weak side of the Belgians is their limited numbers, as well as the more expensive collection of allies outside the three regions of Belgica. At first, the Belgae decided to do the same thing as the Arverni — the accumulation of strength. The second goal of the Belgians was to gather more Germanic relatives and unleash their barbaric indomitable power on their enemies. nine0005
Caesar (a tall red top hat) arrived on the English Channel at the head of four legions. The Romans are dispersed over several areas. This is a very risky decision. On some units are pink tokens « Scouted » — these are Gauls and Germans discovered by Roman mounted intelligence.
The first significant event in the fight against the Romans was the devastation of three regions at once by the Arvern troops. First of all, the red rooster was let into the villages of the traitorous Aedui. Vercingetorix with his troops occupied two Aeduan regions, seized control in them and ruined. Also, their own area on the border with the Province was devastated. Devastated areas prevent the transfer of troops, the collection of reinforcements, double the cost of actions, complicate wintering. In the course of the devastation, every fourth Arvern squad and every third enemy dies. The areas remain ravaged until the coming winter, so the Arverns hoped the Aedui were neutralized for the next half of the game. nine0005
The three devastated areas are marked with black tokens « Devastated » (shown with green arrows). The devastated areas cut off the Roman source of supply — the region of Cisalpia (gray Cisalpina , bottom right), from the rest of Gaul. Next winter, due to a lack of provisions, there will be a mass death of legionnaires who did not have time to leave the northern regions in advance.
Meanwhile, the nameless leader of the Belgae, together with his troops, finally risked crossing the Rhine and returning to his native Belgica. He convinced German relatives to go to the neighboring region under the control of the Romans (and away from himself, after all, German relatives are unpredictable). The Romans, in turn, decided to replenish the supply of resources and clean up, that is, to force any Gallic tribe into peace for a long time. The choice fell on the Belgian tribe of atrebats. The legionnaires, led personally by Caesar, did not spare either children or the elderly. The wheat was seized, everything else was burned, the surviving Gauls were sent as slaves to Rome. This terrible news shocked the neighboring Gallic regions, and there the Belgae were able to hold a free gathering of like-minded people. The number of rebellious Belgae increased. nine0005
Above the circle denoting the Atrebates tribe ( Atrebates ), the Roman placed a red chip « Dispersed Tribe red» This means that the Romans carried out a cleansing of the indigenous population here. Now this tribe is considered destroyed for two game years, that is, in this short scenario — until its very end. The Roman acquired a certain amount of resources, and the Gauls lost the opportunity to call atrebates into their ranks. But two tribes of the Belgians joined the rebels and received yellow discs. On top of the Eburon tribe ( Eburones , top right), a similar chip is visible, but in pink — « Dispersed — Gathering «. It means that here the game was a year ago, that is, even before the start of the scenario, the native tribe of the rebel leader of the Belgians, Ambiorig, was cleared. But now the Gauls have already begun to return to this place, and with the onset of the next year, the Eburon tribe will be reborn.
After the tragic death of the unfortunate atrebats, an important event occurred that influenced the course of the future uprising. First, the Aedui, for money, lured two detachments of the Arverns from the group under the command of Vercingetorig personally to their side. On the next turn, the Aedui were given the opportunity to be the first to play the Druids card. They chose the Gallic Judges event and, according to the text, decided to appoint themselves and the northern Belgians as participants in it. The Belgae at the moment were not dangerous for the Aedui, but they could distract Caesar and his legions. The Arverns were denied participation, and it soon became clear why. nine0005
Card « Druids «. The Edui (blue) go first according to the order of play and choose an event common to all Gauls. They refuse the Arverns, the Belgas are allowed to participate.
The Edui decided to use the favor of the druids for yet another betrayal. They prepared an ambush and … killed the mastermind behind the great Gallic uprising Vercingetorix! The leader of the Arverns, after the plunder of the Aeduan lands, with part of his soldiers, remained in the same place. He believed that in the event of an attack by the Edui brothers, he would always be able to retreat to his controlled areas. But he miscalculated. Together with the leader, four detachments of Arverns perished. The uprising against the Romans hung by a thread before it had even begun. nine0005
Murder of Vercingetorix. The leader of the Arverns died in the forest, not far from the main Aeduan city of Bibracte (blue diamond signed Bibracte ). The white and black tokens indicate the area where the faction takes an action and uses a special skill, respectively. In this case: Combat and Ambush.
, Belgi decided to use the free action for the first attack on the Romans. The Belgians had only enough strength so far to destroy one auxilia. The Roman field camp in the same area was unharmed. At the same time, the nameless leader of the Belgians displaced another German detachment to the Romans. nine0005
Destruction of one auxilia and displacement of the Germans. The Belgae gradually began to prepare a shock German army.
Caesar’s response to the spilled Roman blood was the widespread construction of field camps and an attack on the area where the Belgae and their leader were concentrated.
The Aedui, meanwhile, penetrated the rear of the Arverni, bribed one and destroyed the second rebellious Arvernian tribe.
The Arverns, left without a leader, did not abandon the uprising and began to concentrate in one of the central regions. They saw that the Aedui were seeping in behind them, and they understood what this threatened. But the decisive battle for their freedom could not be postponed. The victory of the Arverns in the game depends on two conditions at once. First, they must achieve the accession to the uprising of a certain number of Gallic tribes. Secondly, the Arverni are obliged by any means to knock out more than half of the Roman legions from the playing field. The first condition was successfully met from the very first move. It remains to complete the second and most difficult — to defeat the required number of legions. nine0005
Caesar (reds) in pursuit of the leader of the Belgae rushed to the northeast, Arverni (green) gather in the center, three Aeduan (blue) units advance along the coast and knock out the Arverni allies. The Aeduan troops in the center gleam with designs with the silhouette of a wild boar. These are the uncovered detachments that participated in the attack on Vercingetorix. At the top of the game board is a resource/victory point track. By cylinders of different colors, you can determine that the green stock of wheat is already at zero, the red and yellow ones still have 2 and 4 resources. The richest are blue, they have 14 resources. At the bottom right, inside the inset for the display of the Roman Senate, two red cubes are visible. These are two legions, which, according to the scenario, are outside the playing field. Therefore, to win, the Arverns need to defeat at least five more legions. nine0036
The nameless successor of the Belgian leader Ambioriga took into account the sad experience of his predecessor. Having learned about the approach of the Romans, he crossed the forest paths to the same area that Caesar had just left. And soon he struck another shot: he destroyed two legions at once.
Belgae evade Caesar by attacking weaker opponents. A white counter is exposed — the Belgae are fighting against two Roman legions. Successfully!
The first year of the game came to an end unnoticed, without any new shocks. Another event card on top of the deck was a winter card. This means that the current map is played normally, but troop movements are prohibited. Autumn frosts have come. The only thing that can make it possible to move troops is the drawing of an event from the map. The Belgae took advantage of this loophole and marched across the frost-covered German soil. Detachments of the Belgae, called up for the war beyond the border Rhine, concentrated in one area for the future crossing to their native Belgica. nine0005
The last faction active before the onset of winter was the Romans. Caesar’s legionnaires did not have winter boots with them and could not move. Therefore, Caesar defeated one Belgian rebelling tribe, discovered not far from his marching camp. Then the Roman troops, located to the south, also tried to destroy the two Arwen tribes in the same area with them. If this had succeeded, the Romans would have won the game ahead of schedule. The Romans were already rubbing their palms and could hardly contain their joy at such a quick and easy victory. The Gauls, on the other hand, were somewhat discouraged, because the introductory game ended in the middle. But, fortunately for the Gauls, the Romans forgot that the strength of the auxilia is half that of the legions (after all, this is the first game, you can easily make a mistake). The Arverni, at the cost of losing two detachments, defended their allied tribes. The Romans, in impotent rage, cursed the lack of winter sandals and the possibility of marching in freezing temperatures. But, alas, history does not know the subjunctive mood. The first game year is over. nine0005
A winter card appeared on the deck. The current map » Impetuosity » is marked with a blue frost token ( Frost / No March ). The Belgians played the Onslaught event, so they were the only ones that could bypass the movement ban this turn.
The winter was hard for the Romans and calm for the Gauls.
Caesar and many Roman troops left the hostile Gallic forests and went to the Province before spring. Part of the troops, by the efforts of the Arverns, was cut off from supplies in Belgica. Several Roman detachments, including two legions, underwent exhaustion and death. Fortunately, the senate made up for these losses and sent Caesar just two newly formed legions.
The Germans increased their numbers, but did not make any incursions. Instead, they plundered the Romans in the very region where the Belgian leader had sent them the previous year. nine0005
The Arverns after the harvest were far ahead in terms of wheat (resources). They also chose a new leader to replace the tragically murdered Vercingetorig. A chip of his nameless successor appeared on the playing field.
The second and last game year has arrived.
The first event card revealed was Acco. According to the list of priorities on this map, the Arverns were the first to go in the new year, followed by the Belgae. The event «Leaders raise an uprising» made it possible to sharply aggravate the situation, so the Arverns, without much hesitation, fulfilled it. nine0005
The first event card after winter is Asso. The game has crossed its equator.
The Belgae, in turn, continued to attack the Gallic tribes allied with Rome, and individual Roman units. The Edui mastered the rear of the Arvernian Union. The Romans focused on putting up red discs — the Gallic tribes allied to Rome.
Finally, the time for the Great Revolt has come. The newly elected unnamed leader of the Arverni led his troops into battle. The Arverns invaded the area where three legions were in the field camp and ravaged it. When an area is devastated, every fourth squad of Arverns and every third of their enemies die. So, without a general battle, in small skirmishes, the Arverns destroyed one legion, losing four of their detachments. Not the worst trade. nine0005
A « Devastated » counter has been placed in an area ravaged by the Arverns, causing several units to die on both sides. In the neighboring region above, in a field camp, is Caesar at the head of one legion and seven auxiliaries. Caesar is in the Belgian region, but the Belgae, as usual, retreated somewhere.
Caesar expectedly rushed to the rescue of his legionnaires. A great battle was to take place soon. No one could have imagined that Caesar was actually making a mistake and was about to fall into a trap. nine0005
Meanwhile, in the north of Belgica, local soldiers openly attacked the Roman legions. The Belgae, having known the taste of victory, this time managed to destroy one legion at the cost of three of their units. The uprising was in full swing. The fallen legion became the seventh red cube outside the playing field. The Arverns fulfilled their second victory condition (to knock out more than six legions) with the help of severe frosts and fierce Belgs.
Six bands of the Belgae were the first to attack the four Roman legions. In this case, the Belgians had a theoretical opportunity to ambush, since all Belgians are hidden. But according to the order of the turn, they received the right to only one action in one area without the use of special skills, which just include «Ambush». Recovering from the unexpected attack, the surviving legionnaires struck back and destroyed half of the attacking Gauls. nine0036
The Aedui continued to refrain from participating in the Great Gallic Revolt. Instead, they tried out their special skill «Trade». Its essence lies in the fact that the Aedui collect income from areas that have a supply line from the Roman Republic. But, if you explain in a nutshell, the very opportunity to trade and the amount of collected resources is determined by the Romans. Long negotiations began between the Aedui and the Romans. According to the rules of the game, the Romans can tax the Aedui merchants and replenish their treasury. And then Caesar made a second gross mistake: he allowed to trade duty-free and did not receive a single sextuple of gold. He only asked the crafty Aedui to divert part of the Arverni troops. Very soon, Caesar will bite his elbows because of his hindsight. nine0005
In the meantime, the successful sequence of moves on the event cards allowed the Romans to launch a preemptive strike against the Arverni. In the center of Gaul, the biggest battle of the entire game took place. The Romans destroyed one tribe and ten units of the Arverni, losing only one auxilia. In the Gallic forests there are no commanders equal to Caesar! At the same time, a punitive operation was carried out on the coast of the English Channel against the Belgae. The Belgae did not accept the fight and fled to Britain, so the Romans destroyed two Belgian tribes. nine0005
The Romans put a white and a black chip into two areas. In the center, «Fight + Siege» will be held against the Arverni, at the top — against the Belgians. These actions cost the Romans dearly. On the resource track, all the Gauls tokens are visible, but the Roman one is not visible. It shifted strongly to the left, towards zero.
Despite the unsuccessful outcome of the battle, the Arverni were not going to retreat. Right in this area, they held a gathering of warriors and replenished their army with three squads. Common sense dictated that now the Arverni should retreat and take care of the Aedui brothers. But the game was introductory and I really wanted to look at the possibility of a military confrontation with the Romans. nine0005
The Belgians played a very successful, though belated event: «Ambiorig is back.» It turns out that the great leader did not die under the blows of the Roman gladius, but was hiding in Germany all this time.
The current map (on the left) shows the event that allowed the Belgae to return their missing leader. The next card, which allows you to add another tribe to the playing field, did not attract anyone. The factions preferred to play out their actions and special skills. nine0036
What the Edui were doing at the same time, the reader can probably guess. They destroyed and captured the rear of the Arverns. The Edui, feeling complete impunity, invaded the south and destroyed the capital of the Arvernian Union — the citadel of Gergovia. The condition for the victory of the Edui Union is to put on the playing field the largest number of discs (allied tribes) compared to any of the other factions. The author of the game complicated this task by giving only eight disks to the Aedui, thirteen to the Arverni, and ten to the Belgae. That is, the Aedui are forced not only to set up their tribal disks, but also to destroy the disks of their opponents. That is why the Aedui are not eager to take part in the rebellion against Rome. Rome becomes an enemy for the Aedui only if the rest of the Gallic brothers are defeated. nine0005
At the end of the game, the Aedui invaded the Arverni’s home region.
The Arverni, still not having sufficient forces to finish off Caesar, carried out a raid on the Romans and seized part of their resources. And here Caesar finally realized that he had fallen into a trap. He and his troops were in a devastated area, in which the cost of any actions was doubled. And Roman resources after the previous battles and the raid of the Gauls remained only … one unit. And even in other, unspoiled areas, nowhere on the playing field, the Romans could no longer pay for any action with this one resource. The last winter of the game was approaching, and the strongest faction could not take a single action! But in addition to the rebellious Arverns, it was still necessary to have time to strike at the fairly wealthy Aedui. They say that Caesar cried and prayed all night, even promised to build a temple in honor of the goddess Fortune. They may be lying, of course. But, in any case, it was at this moment that the Romans were able to play the Labien Offensive event and conduct a free battle against the Arverni. nine0005
The Romans played the «Labien Offensive» event, which allowed for free actions in the area Mandubii , where the main battle of the game took place. Caesar did not need reinforcements and only fought the Battle.
This time the Arverns did not accept the fight and retreated to the area where the main forces of the Belgians and Germans were located. The calculation was that Caesar, having entered this area, would fall under successive blows from three factions at once. Unfortunately, the Arverns forgot that the Gauls have the ability to retreat without leaving the battlefield. And it was not necessary to depart from Caesar. nine0005
After the retreat of the Arverns, an impressive group of barbarians appeared in one of the regions. Although the Belgae did not have time to deliver a joint Belgo-German blow to anyone until the end of the game. It is striking how beautifully the divisions of the Romans are built in a military way, and how randomly the detachments of the Gauls crowded together. Playing as Rome requires you to be disciplined!
The last interesting action of the game was the clearing of two Gallic tribes by Caesar at once. This made it possible for the indignant Gauls (except for the Aedui) to try to hold the Gathering twice in each neighboring region. And either the dice in the «Sky» are skewed, or the goddess Fortune intervened again, but out of ten dice rolls, only two were successful. A free gathering was held by the Arverns in one neighboring region. nine0005
The Roman placed two red chips at once « Dispersed Tribe «, replenished his resources, but raised a wave of popular anger in the neighboring area Carnutes . The Arverns successfully held the Gathering and twice added three detachments of warriors. Apparently, in other areas, the Gauls were fed up with the war and were in no hurry to avenge their innocently killed brethren.
Finally, the map of the second, final winter appeared. The last active faction was the Aedui. They held the Gathering and finally secured their victory in the game. nine0005
Let’s give the floor to the winner: “ We lived peacefully, didn’t touch anyone. But after the treacherous attack of the Arverns, all resources had to be urgently mobilized to fight the invader, who had devastated the granaries of their fathers. Then they began to glance at the overly insolent Romans, but the subtle diplomacy of both sides ruled out confrontation. The peaceful settlement of the deserted Arvernian villages helped the Aedui return to their rightful place at the head of the Gallic tribes!
Game over. In the foreground is the player board for the Edui League. There are no troop tokens on the board, and only one disc of the allied tribe remains. Everything else is on the playing field. The Edui, unlike other factions, do not calculate victory points on a common resource track, but on their own player board. At the bottom you can see a square blue chip « Other Most Allies » (the largest number of alien allied tribes) on the number 5. Throughout the game, the Aedui enviously follow the successes of other factions and mark on their tablet how many tribes the most successful of them has set up. In this case, five red disks were set up by the Romans, their tablet is visible nearby. The number of empty spaces for their blue Aeduan tribes is seven. That is, the Aedui have two tribes more than the Romans. Aedui victory condition fulfilled.
Thus ended the Great Revolt, which ended the independence of the Gauls.
