Travelling across Europe is a dream come true with the venerable Euro Truck multiplayer mod

There’s nothing that quite defines fantasy vacations so much as the idea of a cross-country road trip with friends. One can picture it now: a beaten-up Volkswagen van, a few close friends, and nothing but conversation to pass your time cruising through the open road with the wind in your hair. According to research posted on the US-based National Centre for Biotechnology Information, out of the 91.2 percent of surveyed members had a bucket list, and a whopping 78.5 percent of them had a desire to travel in some form.

This should come as little surprise. Many consider traveling across the globe a luxury for those with the money and the time to do so, but it turns out that a rich lifestyle isn’t the only way to experience the joys of a road trip with companions at your side. I’ve been traveling Europe with the aid of Euro Truck Simulator 2 and a multiplayer mod called TruckersMP. It’s worth mentioning that both Euro Truck Simulator 2 and American Truck Simulator have now had multiplayer support added since July, which makes it a lot easier for everyone to get an online game, but the official Convoy multiplayer is an eight person affair. TruckersMP, while getting on a bit, is on a different scale.

Initially released on the 1st of May 2014, TruckersMP is a massively multiplayer mod for Euro Truck 2 that allows players to join one of several servers and travel Europe with thousands of other truckers. The mod makes a multitude of changes to allow for a streamlined multiplayer experience, including removing NPC drivers and putting speed-caps on certain servers. It also adds radio channels for voice chat and even its own radio station which the community runs.

Using the mod, which requires two hours of single-player gameplay, to avoid the dangers of newbie truckers learning the ropes on the busy highway, players can band together in a convoy, journeying everywhere from the pleasant hills of Aberdeen to the gorgeous beaches of Iberia. Provided that players come equipped with Euro Truck 2’s many DLCs, travelling from Russia to Paris is as easy as putting your foot on the pedal.

A typical journey from one end of Europe to the other takes approximately two to three hours, depending on stops and traffic. Traffic is a real concern, too. Since TruckersMP has a massive playerbase cruising across Europe, traffic jams can and do happen. Calais is especially susceptible to congestion, since it’s a popular starting destination and is one of the central base-game cities. It can see anywhere between 50 — 200 vehicles at once, which is especially daunting since it’s merely a condensed hub of various pit-stops. Thankfully, Truckers MP has truck collisions turned off in cities to ensure your safety from shoddy drivers or trolls. However, collisions are active on the rest of the road, so watch your driving!

TruckersMP and, by extension, Euro Truck 2 are so serene that it’s hard not to find yourself falling into bliss as you view the lovingly crafted scenery around you, enjoying the company of your friends and a good tune to pass the time. Your experience will differ depending on which of the several driving styles you pick. Simple automatic is the easiest to handle with no gear shifting, whereas H-shifter is for trucking pros, requiring a PC wheel and gear stick.

Euro Truck 2 also features VR support for added immersion. Seeing the monolithic mountains of Scandinavia in VR is nothing short of awesome. When playing with a crew, it only gets better. Conversations will often stop mid-sentence at some of the sites, views, and landscapes the game has to offer.

This intrinsic beauty is a double-edged sword, however. Since Euro Truck’s post-launch development has mostly been on the various expansions available to purchase — aside from graphical and gameplay improvements — base-game cities feel inferior to their DLC counterparts. Sure, the English countryside is still beautiful, but it doesn’t compare to the enchantment of Stockholm and Paris.

Not only this, but it also means that DLC maps suffer population issues on TruckersMP. Newly released countries can feel deserted because people either can’t afford to or simply don’t care to buy them. It’s rare to see a truck passing by in Russia, whereas places like Berlin are brimming with drivers. There’s an emptiness to driving in the premium parts of Europe, in other words. If you don’t have companions by your side, it can feel devoid of what makes TruckersMP so compelling.

That is not to say that Euro Truck’s many, many DLCs are required to enjoy your time with the title. Of course, traveling in the vanilla portion of the map is just as fun. It’s also worth mentioning that despite the downloadable content jumping in quality, the vanilla roads are fantastically accurate and legitimate. Driving through England at night in the pouring rain invokes a sense of nostalgia to those who reminisce about the road trips of their younger years.

And if you’re used to European roads, you’ll feel right at home here. Being able to share those experiences with a social group can feel rewarding. Those who may find the single-player portion of Euro Truck rather drab and unfulfilling may find that TruckersMP is the cure. That enjoyable monotony of the open road never ceases to keep you gripped, despite it’s unapologetic repetitiveness.

Even if you don’t have a group to drive with, the community has you covered. TruckersMP has forums dedicated to convoys looking for people to join their ranks, and the community Discord is always active. Even when you’re playing there’s the opportunity to converse with fellow drivers on your recent journeys. Convoys are usually easy to spot too, with matching paint jobs or tags on their usernames.

All in all, TruckersMP has become a lovely addition to an already pleasant game. There’s something so wholesome about sharing a journey with those you care about. The intimacy of the online voice call, the fun comparisons of truck brands and colour schemes, even repair issues feel personal as you plan which city you’ll meet at to continue your adventure into the heart of Europe. It’s an experience that might not draw everyone in, but for those who are already allured by the notion of a group road trip, this is exactly the kind of thing to get started.

So, hello, today I would like to talk about one of my favorite games — ETS 2. I agree, there is not much to talk about it, but, what is possible has already been said more than once. But I just can’t ignore this game, just because I love it.

What kind of game is this in a nutshell.

The title describes this game quite well, it really is a truck driving simulator in Europe. The gameplay is meditative, one might even say boring. The whole point is to take the load and carry it from point A to point B. So, in a nutshell, now let’s move on to the details.

How to play it.

Create your character: choose an avatar, come up with a name, company name, choose a «dream car», a city where the main garage will be located and start. An introductory drive is being launched — you just need to drive a couple of kilometers around the city from one warehouse to another. The fact-finding drive, by the way, takes place on the truck that we chose when creating the character. After the training drive, we are shown our first garage for one car, explained what it is for and allowed into the main menu. Then we can wander through the menu and take a new order. In the menu of orders, you can sort them according to the proposed parameters. We are taking a few more orders, after each we receive letters to the game e-mail, in one they offer a job, in the other they notify that there is a nearby car dealership of the brand that we chose when creating the profile, in the third we are offered to take a loan from the bank. From this moment on, we are the masters of our destiny: we can continue to deliver orders on the «master’s» trucks, we can collect loans and buy our own, and take only trailers without trucks. Over time, new parts for trucks are unlocked and it becomes possible to buy your own trailers.

Company development.

It’s not just that we have a garage, the ability to buy trucks, trailers, take loans — all these are tools for building our own empire. We can upgrade our first single garage up to five spaces, and then buy other garages throughout Europe. Initially purchased garages will be three-seater, and then they can be turned into five-seater, also for a certain amount of money. Then we take places in the garages with trucks, and hire a driver for each of the trucks in a recruitment agency. Such is the mechanism of development.

Pumping.

But you can upgrade not only your company, but also your character. For each delivered cargo, we are awarded not only money, but also experience points. When we gain a certain number of points, the level of the driver increases. For each level increase, we are given skill points — with their help, the driver is pumped. We can allocate points between six categories:

ADR — dangerous goods, receiving a certain category, we have the opportunity to deliver these very dangerous goods.

Long distances — this skill provides the ability to take orders for transportation over long distances.

Expensive and fragile cargo, urgent orders — the first boost ranks give us access to orders with these marks, and subsequent levels increase our income for transporting such cargo.

Eco-driving — allows you to save fuel (in my opinion, this is the most useless skill).

Each skill branch has 6 upgrade levels, so for full upgrade we need to increase the driver’s level 36 times.

Elements of realism.

The word «simulator» in the title tells us that this game should have elements of realism. Yes, the main one is believable physics, but there are others, most of which can be configured or, in general, disabled. Firstly, ETS has a system of fines — a certain amount of money will be deducted from our account for speeding, running a red light, driving in the oncoming lane and an accident. Secondly, our driver cannot work indefinitely, sometimes he needs to sleep, this can be done at gas stations, in hotels, in our own garages and in other places specially designated for this. And, if you decide not to sleep, then after a while you will be fined for processing, and later the driver will begin to fall asleep at the wheel. Thirdly, our truck sometimes needs to be refueled, in fact, for this there are, previously mentioned, gas stations. And if you break it, then it will need to be repaired in a car service, where you can also replace any parts on it. Also, if an employee cannot find an order for himself, he will be forced to go just like that, and he will need to pay for this trip. Even in the game, you can and should, so to speak, look for car dealerships and recruitment agencies in cities. The cities themselves, by the way, although they have real names, have nothing more to do with their real prototypes. They have only everything you need for the game itself: a garage, a car dealership, a recruitment agency, a car service, several warehouses of various companies, and sometimes hotels. There are also seaports and railway stations near some cities, they are needed so that we can move from England to France, for example. Sometimes on our way the road can be blocked due to an accident, and we will have to look for a detour. Each order has its own description: the cargo being transported, its weight, travel distance, the validity period of the offer of this order and the period for which you need to deliver this order. And there are many more trinkets that add realism: headlights, turn signals, wipers, power windows, lifting axle control, retarder, engine braking, cruise control, an extensive list of Internet radio, you can throw all sorts of mugs, bags, bottles and other accessories into the cabin , you can even put a man, woman or cat on the next seat, you can also hang all sorts of lamps, horns, beacons outside, and this list can be significantly expanded with the help of additions and modifications. There are quite a lot of all these little details that increase realism, and, for sure, I still forgot to mention something, but I tried.

Control methods.

In Euro Truck Simulator 2 there are quite a few ways to drive our truck. Firstly, using the keyboard is not the most pleasant way, but, nevertheless, it is quite possible to manage it this way. Secondly, you can steer with the mouse, this method is more preferable, but I didn’t really like it. And thirdly, this game is well friends with various devices: gamepads, steering wheels, even with the help of a joystick for flight simulators, I think you can control it. You can, in general, burn out and recreate the real interior of the truck in your room.

Brands.

In ETS 2, the names of the companies for which we will carry out cargo transportation, although distorted, are similar to real ones. But the cars in the game are licensed. So we can drive trucks of brands: Volvo, Scania, Renault, Mercedes, Man, Iveco and Daf. And in the stream we will meet such cars as: Ford Focus, Ford Mustang, Lada Granta, and even Niva.

Trailers.

Trailers are also an important part of the trucking game. And there are quite a lot of them in ETS. For different types of cargo, we can choose from: curtain side trailer, van, flatbed, chip truck, feed truck, grain truck, timber truck, tanker, container truck and refrigerated truck.

Additions.

ETS 2 also has an extensive list of add-ons, there are also very useless ones that add only coloring, there are more interesting ones that add customization elements, oversized cargo and various trailers, and there are the most important ones — those that enlarge the map, without them, of course, you can play, but with them the game is greatly transformed and it becomes much more interesting to play.

Graphics.

Probably, it is no longer necessary to seriously evaluate the graphics of this game, since it was released 10 years ago, but, nevertheless, I can say that it still pleases my eye, you can often catch really beautiful views, especially at sunset and dawn. And for those who are not satisfied with what the game has to offer in its standard form, there are various modifications, including those that improve graphics.

Mods.

Modifications deserve special attention. ETS, of course, is unlikely to compete in their number with GTA San Andreas, but, nevertheless, there are really a lot of them, and they are diverse. You can find something for every taste, from packs of vehicles for traffic and trucks, ending with a modified physical model and entire maps. And the installation is painfully simple, you just need to drop the files into a special folder in the documents, and then connect the necessary modifications in the menu of the game itself. The main thing is not to forget to check the compatibility of a particular modification with your version of the game and, sometimes, with a list of installed add-ons.

A few words about multiplayer.

About multiplayer, I really can only say a few words — it is. I can’t say anything more about him, because I never tried to play him, because he never attracted me. Singleplayer has always been enough for me, but, at the same time, I can’t help but mention the presence of multiplayer.

First ETS and ATS.

There is no story in this article that is familiar to me, about how I met this game and this series of games, simply because I don’t remember how it happened, ETC just somehow appeared in my life, and so in she stayed forever. But, anyway, I can not say a few words about other games in this series.

The first Euro Truck Simulator was not as popular as its successor. And, in general, maybe someone will throw a rag at me, but, in my opinion, the first ETS was only a demo version of the second part.

And American Truck Simulator is, in fact, the sister of ETS 2, since in this game everything is exactly the same, only instead of a map of Europe — a map of America, and instead of European cabovers — American trucks.

How I play.

I’ve noticed that every time I play ETS, I follow the same scenario. I’m leaving for it for about a week, well, there’s a plus or minus (not in the sense that I sit and play all week without getting out from behind the computer, but in the sense that I only play ETS in my free time). This idea starts with a standard single player, I just play this game in the form in which it was created. After some time, I download some truck, car, or even a few cars, and ride them around Europe. And this binge ends with a modification called «Severe Russia». Russia there, by the way, is really harsh, but that’s another story…

Instead of output.

Euro Truck Simulator definitely deserves attention. I can’t call this game my favorite, but I can’t help but call it one of my favorite games. This game will not make you an expert driver or a real trucker, but it can help you relax in the evening after a day’s work.

In the 2000s, the TV series «Truckers» was popular. Every boy wanted to become a truck driver and ride a yellow KamAZ. Some people are working on it now, and for others there is Euro Truck Simulator 2.

Basic information

Euro Truck Simulator 2 is a truck simulator . The player transports goods throughout Europe and manages his own transport company. For each completed order, the trucker receives money to buy new units and experience for pumping skills.

First, the player is offered 2 options for the development of the plot:

1. Work as a hired driver , save up money, and then open your own company with a garage, truck and trailer. It takes more time, but teaches to progress.
2. Take out a loan to buy property . Then every gaming day you need to pay the specified amount. The loan can be repaid early or take another one. It takes less time, but the player risks not repaying the loan.

The gameplay consists of constant selection and transportation of orders, purchase and tuning of property. On the way, the time of day and the weather change for atmosphere. So that the player does not get bored, there is a radio or a player.

Features of the game

1. The developers have made realistic physics of the hitch . When cornering, you need to take into account its dimensions so as not to damage the load or not roll over at a speed of 100 km / h.

8. Character gets tired over time . According to the rules of the road, a trucker can drive 11 hours without rest. If you translate this into real time, you get a little more than 1 hour. When a character has not rested for more than 11 hours, a fatigue notification appears, then he is fined, and then he falls asleep at the wheel. To relax, you need to park in parking lots at gas stations, near auto repair shops or in special pockets on highways.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 Pros

Cons

Multiplayer

Cooperative play and communication in multiplayer make the simulator more interesting. But the online mode has 2 disadvantages:

1. No traffic . All multiplayer cars are driven by people. In addition to trucks, there are cars online, but there is still not enough traffic. All cars accumulate in a large traffic jam in the center of the map.
2. Multiplayer is spoiled by trolls , who deliberately interfere with other players. Trolls can run at full speed into an oncoming truck or cut it off. Moderators block them for a day, but instead of the old ones, new ones or the same ones from other accounts come. To avoid these, it is better not to drive in the center of the map.

DLC

When the standard ETS 2 package becomes scarce, people start looking for add-ons . In them, you can install new coloring pages and expand the map. It seems that everything is fine, but there is one sad fact: if you buy an official copy of the game, then you will also have to pay for add-ons. Many of them cost as much as the game itself.
