ABC (Spain): Spanish tragedy that served as a precedent for the killing of thousands of civilians by the allies in Dresden

InoSMI materials contain only assessments of foreign media and do not reflect the position of the editors of InoSMI

75 years ago, Anglo-American aircraft almost wiped out Dresden. This was the culmination of the so-called «total war» — attacks on thousands of innocent civilians in order to force the Third Reich to surrender. nine0003

Manuel P. Villatoro

It was February 13, 1945, and World War II was drawing to a close when Allied bombs hit Dresden, 200 kilometers south of Berlin. For the next three days, British Lancasters and American Flying Fortresses in three waves (256, 552 and 311 bombers each) dropped shells on the German city. Their target was not city factories. At least not only them. The Allies wanted to cause fear among the population, destroy houses and shops — in general, create chaos. nine0003

This was the culmination of the so-called «total war» — attacks on innocent civilians in order to force the Third Reich to surrender. According to the main ideologist of these bombings, the Englishman Arthur Harris (nicknamed «The Butcher»), the goal was achieved. However, at a high price: from 25 to 100 thousand killed. And to this day, the exact numbers remain a mystery. What is known for sure is that 75 years ago, the head of the RAF Bomber Command managed to realize his cruel dream: to prove to the whole world that mass bombing helped to break Hitler’s forces and hasten the end of World War II. Arthur Harris knew what kind of massacre the Germans had carried out in Guernica and, nevertheless, gave the order to bomb. nine0003

Possessed

The British strategy for bombing German cities arose after Lieutenant General Arthur Harris took over the aforementioned RAF Bomber Command in 1942. This officer, who later became known as «Bomber Harris» or «Butcher Harris», was a supporter of the idea that if you intimidate the civilian population, they will soon rise up against Nazism. “The German civilians were supposed to turn their backs on their leaders if they were fired upon, kicked out of their homes if they were left without a livelihood. The bombing was supposed to break their morale in the first place,” Ian Buruma explains in The Destruction of Germany. Historian Sinclair McKay (author of Dresden 1945″) claims that England also intended to sow panic in German cities in order to hasten the surrender of the Third Reich in the face of possible terror.

Of the two goals, the second was more realistic. Arthur Harris, who suffered severely from a military inferiority complex due to his colonial rather than aristocratic background, became convinced of the effectiveness of bombing during the First World War, in which he participated as a soldier of the 1st Rhodesian Infantry Regiment. The inefficiency of trench warfare, in which from 19From 14 to 1919, a huge number of soldiers died, replacing each other, convinced him of the need to destroy the enemy from the sky. Finally, Arthur Harris had the opportunity to look at the battlefield from the air, from the Sopwith Camel biplane, in which he was a fighter pilot during the First World War. This finally convinced him. The numbers supported his theory, as the First World War cost the lives of approximately ten million soldiers.

After that war, the ideas of Arthur Harris were confirmed in Iraq. The command believed that it was more expedient to destroy the enemy from the air there so as not to launch a large-scale ground offensive. “Young Captain Harris, soaring high in the Arabian sky, thought about the impact of the bombs on the simple dwellings below: an entire village could be reduced to ashes in forty-five minutes. Other than anti-aircraft guns, there was little to help the people below,” explains Sinclair McKay. It was then that the future «butcher» first dropped a bomb on civilians and saw what chaos it caused. nine0003

In his defense, it should be said that soon after (in the thirties) the great military analysts called the attack on the civilian population one of the means of intimidating the enemy. Lord Tiverton was the first to ask aloud the question that many military men of that time secretly asked: is it legal to bomb men and women who work for the regime behind the lines? “The girl who works in the munitions factory is part of the war machine, just like the soldier who shoots at her. She is much more vulnerable and will be attacked for sure. It is impossible to say whether such an attack would be unjustified.” He concluded that, without any doubt, this principle would be used in the coming wars. nine0003

The triumph of terror

This discussion was decisively interrupted by Adolf Hitler before the outbreak of World War II. During the Spanish Civil War, which lasted from 1936 to 1939, the Condor legion bombed the Basque city of Guernica, which, according to Sinclair Mackay, was «a direct precedent for Dresden», as well as «the beginning of total war», that is, a systematic attack on civilians for the sole purpose of creating chaos and destroying the enemy’s life support system. However, the leadership of the Third Reich, being masters of propaganda, always insisted that the Luftwaffe aimed exclusively at the arms factories of Guernica. nine0003

Not a very convincing argument, since already in the years of World War II, Adolf Hitler himself was very enthusiastic about Goering’s proposal to wipe the British capital off the face of the earth. “Göring wants to achieve an extraordinary new effect with the help of countless incendiary bombs, set fire to the city from different ends, set it on fire everywhere. […] Completely destroy London! How can their firefighters help when everything is on fire?” the Fuhrer once said. On another occasion, Hitler approved the training of a crew that was to fly in a long-range heavy bomber across northern Germany and drop their deadly cargo … on New York! nine0003

Thus, when Arthur Harris was appointed commander of the British Strategic Air Force in 1940, his ideas were not at all new. What he really brought to the table was the way they bombarded Germany from the air. In a memoir he published in 1947, Arthur Harris claimed to have admired «tornadoes and firestorms.» He was dissatisfied with the explosives used by the Royal Air Force for their low yield. “The bombs were too small. The standard 113kg bomb was just ridiculous,” he wrote. nine0003

British Prime Minister Winston Churchill initially supported the new method of bombing. This chameleon-minded politician became convinced in the early years of the war that the only way to defeat Germany was «an absolutely devastating attack with very heavy bombing of Nazi territories.» In his opinion, it was necessary to prevent this war from dragging on as long as the previous one. The proof is that on February 22, 1942, he appointed the future «Butcher» as head of the aforementioned bomber command and ordered intensified attacks on German cities. nine0003

Divided opinion

Since taking office, Arthur Harris has had two goals: to prevent Churchill from changing his mind about bombing civilians, and to increase the number of aircraft and crews under his command to intensify the shelling of German cities . Sinclair Mackay says that The Butcher had a deep hatred for the Germans and always believed that «the destruction of cities, the killing of workers and the disruption of public life» would prevent a more serious war. And in general, he believed that such a death was not the worst way to go to another world. nine0003

For the next few years, Arthur Harris fought everyone who opposed the mass bombing of civilians. “Anyone who expressed doubts or dissatisfaction with his work became a member of the fifth column,” Sinclair Mackay reveals. From the very beginning, his main obstacles in this regard were the orders of the Royal Air Force General Staff, which was a firm supporter of strategic strikes exclusively on specific points, weapons factories or oil rigs, for example, in this way, in the opinion of the command, it was possible to avoid mass bombing of the civilian population and at the same time disable the German military industry even without killing innocent men, women and children.0003

However, Arthur Harris argued that such raids forced the pilots to fly too close to the targets to ensure an accurate bomb hit, which put them at serious risk and cost the lives of thousands of young English pilots. At that time, about 50 thousand people had already died. However, according to Sinclair McKay, The Butcher did not use this argument to his advantage. Rather, he took on the appearance of the saddened father of all those dead youths. “It is impossible to overestimate their courage and determination in the face of danger, especially over such a long period of time,” he wrote after World War II. nine0003

The most violent clashes between Arthur Harris and the command took place in the last months of 1943. He did not change his original point of view and even signed the plan for the so-called Operation Thunder — a massive (almost apocalyptic) bombing of Berlin with the sole purpose of scaring the Third Reich. The report presented to the high command stated: «The attack must be so massive that as a result of it the maximum number of people who are in the designated area die.»
nine0003

In the end, Arthur Harris managed to convince the high command that even if Nazi industry was completely bombed, Germany could still restore its productive forces in less than four to five months. “The dams on Mena and Eder were destroyed to create fear. But the result was not achieved, and what we did achieve, we got at too high a price. In this operation, we were able to show the highest skill, courage, devotion and technical ingenuity. However, the material damage caused was insignificant compared to that which would have caused a small shelling of the designated area, ”the Butcher cited his arguments in the report. In fact, Arthur Harris had already ordered countless bombing raids on cities like Westphalia, Lübeck, Rostock, Cologne, Essen and others, even before the approval of the command. nine0003

Fire on Dresden

According to well-known journalist and historian Jesus Hernandez in his work One Hundred Best Anecdotes of World War II, the shelling of Dresden (the capital of Saxony) was the culmination of Harris’ «total war». According to the historian, it was «an important transport hub and industrial center» and that is why Dresden has already been bombed several times since the beginning of the war. However, this operation was a heavy blow to the Nazi regime.

The bombardment of Dresden began at 22:00 13 February 1945 years old. “The first wave of bombardments involved 244 four-engined Avro Lancasters, which dropped 800 tons of bombs,” writes Jesús Hernandez. B-17 «Flying Fortresses» They were equipped with a huge number of machine guns, and got their nickname because their firepower and the way they bombed the enemy (they formed in close groups) turned them into an invincible obstacle for the Nazi fighters.0003

The US Air Force sent nearly four hundred Flying Fortresses, each with 4,000 kilograms of explosives. On February 15, the Allies struck the final blow, ending the destruction of Dresden. To this day, the exact number of victims is unknown, but Jesus Hernandez claims that more than 300,000 people died among civilians and the military, which is «almost double the number of victims from the bombings in Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined.» According to the most optimistic estimates, at least 25,000 people died in Dresden. nine0003

Data on the number of bombs dropped are analyzed by historian Andrew Roberts in his book Storm of War: “2,680 tons of bombs dropped destroyed more than 33 square kilometers of the city. Many of the dead are women, children, the elderly and some of the hundreds of thousands of fugitives fleeing the Red Army, which was less than 100 kilometers to the east. They died of asphyxiation, burns, or were boiled alive, according to historian Allan Mallinson in one of his many studies on the subject. In the words of Andrew Roberts, “Boiled alive is not a metaphor. To avoid the flames, many jumped into a giant fire-fighting water tank and were boiled alive. I had to remove mountains of corpses from there.” nine0003

Three questions for Sinclair Mackay

— What is the «total war» that you claim in your book started from Dresden?
