Elden Ring is set to release for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC this Friday, February 25, 2022 (see it at Amazon). If you haven’t checked it out yet, our Elden Ring review is live and spoiler: it’s incredible. Anyone who buys the PS4 or Xbox One version will get a free next-gen upgrade as well, which is always nice to see. Elden Ring is the next game from the makers of tough-but-satisfying action RPGs like Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. Elden Ring Has a Free Next-Gen Upgrade
Anyone who buys Elden Ring for PS4 will be able to upgrade to the PS5 version for free. The same goes for Xbox: buy it for Xbox One, and you’ll get a free upgrade to the Xbox Series X or Series S version. That’s something of a relief, as many games don’t offer a free upgrade path, and many PS5/Series X|S games cost $69.99 instead of $59.99.

What is Elden Ring?
Elden Ring is an action-RPG that represents a confluence of fandoms. On one hand, you have From Software’s Hidetaka Miyazaki, the creator of the exceptional, brooding games mentioned above. On the other, you have George R.R. Martin, the mind that brought you Game of Thrones, helping build out the story.
As for the game itself, it’s an action RPG that doesn’t look like it will stray far from the gameplay popularized in the Dark Souls franchise.
You can expect super-precise combat controls and towering bosses to take down. These games are certainly challenging, but if you keep trying, you’ll likely learn the enemies’ moves and improve your skills enough to succeed.
As for the story? From Software’s games have never been very forthcoming with their stories, even within the games themselves. Bandai Namco released an Elden Ring plot summary, but it doesn’t help all that much, either. As far as I can tell, a bunch of demigods each have a piece of the powerful Elden Ring. Your job is to relieve them of these pieces in order to put the ring back together.

Is it possible to comfortably play Elden Ring on PlayStation 4 — I show with examples — Games on DTF
A small comparison of graphics and download speeds on PS4 and PS5.

Elden Ring came out on two generations of consoles at once, so we decided to compare how much the graphics on PS4 and PS5 differ.
In short, the main advantage of the version for the current generation of consoles is the performance mode, in which the game runs at a stable 60 fps. But even this regime had unexpected problems.
Download speed
My base PS4 still has a standard HDD, so the result of the comparison is quite predictable — everything loads several times faster on PS5. And if in the open world in a long load there is nothing terrible, then on the bosses (which usually take several attempts to kill) it is annoying.
Loading time from the start menu in the Graveyard (the first zone in the open world):
- PS4 ~ 28 seconds;
- PS5 ~ 8 seconds.
Fast travel inside the Graveyard:
- PS4 ~ 23 seconds;
- PS5 ~ 8 seconds.
Respawn at the place of grace (at the checkpoint):
- PS4 ~ 33 seconds;
- PS5 ~ 8 seconds.
Static graphics comparison
The PS4 and PS5 versions of Elden Ring have almost the same picture quality. Yes, the PS5 has higher resolutions in both graphics modes and slightly better lighting, but overall there are no dramatic differences. You usually need to look closely to see this difference — and most often it only shows up in how clearly the branches on the trees in the distance look.
Dynamic comparison
The main advantage of the PS5 version of Elden Ring is the performance mode, in which the console produces a stable 60 fps. In this mode, the gameplay becomes smoother and more enjoyable.
Note: The base PS4 can only record video in 1280×720 resolution. Therefore, it will only be possible to judge the smoothness of the picture.
PS4 — fight. Although Elden Ring on PS4 does not have a stable 60 fps, this does not really interfere with playing — the feeling is no worse than in previous FromSoftware 9 games0003
PS5 — Battle in performance mode.

PS4 — horseback combat. Fps drops sometimes happen, but I have not yet had a situation in which this would somehow affect the gameplay
PS5 — Performance Mount Combat
Despite the fact that battles in performance mode really feel smoother and more enjoyable, a pop-in effect appears in the game world — when objects are loaded right in front of the player’s eyes.
Horseback combat on PS5 in performance mode. Pay attention to the field in the distance — I have never seen such an aggressive pop-in effect either in quality mode or on PS4
When I saw Elden Ring at a stable 60 fps, I decided that I could no longer play FromSoftware titles with a lower frame rate. But then I launched Elden Ring on PS4, spat at 30 fps, and after a couple of minutes I stopped noticing the difference.
If you only have a previous generation console, you can safely buy Elden Ring for it — the PS5 version has no fundamental differences.
