We may not have an E3 this year, but does that matter? Sony has been running these State of Play events for a while now, and tonight’s instalment had everything from Final Fantasy to Resident Evil to Street Fighter to Spider-Man.

While the show didn’t have any ground-breaking announcements, at least on the level we expect from E3, that didn’t really matter. I’m sure those are coming later in the month. For now, we got some new Final Fantasy XVI footage, our first good look at Street Fighter 6 and its very strange career mode, a trailer for a very pretty but also troubled indie game, some VR news, a Resident Evil 4 remake, and loads of other things that you can check out below.

During today’s State of Play stream, Capcom and PlayStation finally revealed Resident Evil 4 Remake. It’s coming to PlayStation 5 on March 24, 2023.

The brief teaser shows a game that looks much like the original. Leon Kennedy is dispatched to rural Europe to find the United States president’s daughter when all hell breaks loose. Oh, and Ada Wong is there, because is just wouldn’t be a Resident Evil game without its resident (ahem) femme fatale?

Stray, the game about being a cat in a world not meant for cats, finally has a release date. It’s coming to PlayStation and PC on July 19, publisher Annapurna Interactive announced at Sony’s State of Play showcase this evening.

Today, Sony and Insomniac announced that the original Spider-Man game, first released on PS4 back in 2018, is heading to PC on August 12.

Following up on its previous promise of a summer reveal, Capcom joined PlayStation during today’s State of Play to share more footage of the upcoming Street Fighter 6.

Who needs a real haunted house when you can put a fake haunted house on your face? If you own a PlayStation 5, stepping into a digital realm will be a lot easier soon. At today’s State of Play showcase, Capcom revealed that its 2021 horror game Resident Evil Village will be available for PSVR2—y’know, when the hardware actually becomes available.

As a part of the PlayStation State of Play 2022, Square Enix showed off a gameplay trailer for the upcoming PS5 roleplaying game, Final Fantasy XVI. While the exact release date isn’t set, the game is currently slated to come out sometime in the summer of 2023.

Well hello there, this looks very cool. Rollerdrome is a skate-based shooter, with a very crisp art style, that’s coming to PS4, PS5 and PC on August 16.

Tunic Is Getting A PlayStation Release

Tunic, a Zelda-like with one of the best video game manuals of all time, has very quietly become one of the best games of the year. So it’s great that PlayStation owners will be able to join in on the fun when the game releases on PS4 and PS5 on September 27.

The Callisto Protocol Is Looking Very Dead Space

The Callisto Protocol, a very Dead Space-looking game from the creator of Dead Space that was first announced back in 2020, got its first big gameplay trailer today.

A New Trailer For Season: A Letter To The Future

Season: A Letter To The Future, a game with a troubled development, released this very chill trailer as part of the showcase.

Eternights Is Mixing Romance With Fighting

Eternights is a dating game. It’s also an action game. Because why can’t we all find love while at the same time uppercutting demons in the face. It’s coming to both PS4 and PS5.

The strongest impression of E3 2021 — good or bad — DTF games

We discuss the main games and announcements.

15013
views

E3 2021 is formally over. All important presentations have already passed, and the announcements have been made, so we can sum up. The DTF editors tell you what the main gaming event of this year and related events are remembered for — and you join in the comments.

Oleg Chimde: many games from the former USSR — and some also in Russian

We heard Russian speech at this E3 three times: in the plot video of S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2, the Pioner trailer, which resembles the first Stalker in appearance and gameplay, and in the Atomic Heart gameplay cut. I don’t remember that there was so much Russian speech at E3, if it ever was, of course. Atomic Heart under the hit of the Mirage group is completely purebred frenzy, as it is.

It’s great to see so many of our (and by ours I mean all the Russian-speaking countries for which we broadcast) projects at the conference. Here and S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2, and Pioner, and Atomic Heart, and Chernobylite, and Replaced, and partly Painkiller, for which Saber Interactive is responsible, and more.

We all got out of the crisis for a long time, but it seems that we have finally come out. And pride in ours is my strongest impression of E3. I really like this kind of patriotism, and I want more and more authors from our countries.

Alexey Afanasiev: a lot of indie and co-op

In recent years, interesting indie projects have been appearing at E3 more and more often. And not only at their typical exhibitions like Devolver Digital and PC Gaming Show, but also, for example, at the Microsoft conference. We have already prepared a separate article about the most interesting games: there is an interactive story in the style of Studio Ghibli, and roguelike with elements of Tetris, and a stealth action about serial cleaners, in which they will let you play as a kind of Mr. Wolfe from Pulp Fiction.

Separately, I note that there are more announcements of cooperative games, which I am very happy about. No matter how tired everyone is about zombies, Back 4 Blood still looks like good entertainment for a few evenings. In Aragami 2, you will be able to complete all story missions in co-op with up to three ninjas. Not far behind are small indies like Trash Sailors and Wizard with a Gun, which stand out for their style and not a serious attitude.

Well, it’s extremely curious what Arkane will do with their Redfall: I believe that developers can create a game in all the boring genre, but make it interesting and fresh thanks to their signature style.

Jamil Makhmutov: Elden Ring is the crafting and open-world Soullike Action RPG we deserve

Before E3 2021, two years after the announcement, FromSoftware finally re-revealed Elden Ring — the fans are delighted, and the developers openly call the new game the culmination of everything the studio has worked on in all its time.

Judging by the trailers and previews, Elden Ring really looks like a collection of FromSoftware ideas put into an open world. There are also dangerous enemies, swamps and terrifying bosses, to kill which you need to roll a lot. Combat stances will move from Dark Souls III to Elden Ring, and verticality in locations from Sekiro.

So far there is no question about the gameplay itself — in this regard, FromSoftware has never failed, even when it moved away from the usual RPG mechanics in favor of fast-paced action with rhythm game mechanics (parrying in Sekiro). In the case of Elden Ring, it is not yet clear how the developers will implement the open world and what will be its content.

Still, before in the previous games of the studio, all locations were carefully thought out to the smallest detail and connected to each other. Yes, there was a partial open world in Sekiro, but the player did not have complete freedom until certain plot points. In Elden Ring, they will allow you to explore the whole world at once, and it will also be very large, so the hero will be given a horse.

Perhaps because of all these innovations, Elden Ring will turn out to be much simpler in the end, but it’s too early to judge everything. However, we can already say that with its new game FromSoftware is returning to its roots in terms of setting and storytelling, so fans of the original Souls should be satisfied.

Artemy Kotov: Phil has no one to «defeat»

I can’t believe it, but this show could have been saved by Konami. Unfortunately, she did not have time, so there were no Silent Hill — and no surprises. Apart from the «grand» DLC announcements, updates and ports, really interesting trailers can be counted on the fingers of one hand, and all the brightest came at the Microsoft conference. Since Sony has made it a rule to skip the main event of the year, its very existence already seems like a dubious idea. Without its main competitor, the Microsoft conference didn’t just save the show: it was E3. But one was not enough.

I do not argue, they showed a lot of interesting things. I love indie and I’m glad that small studios are getting more and more attention. But E3 was about something else. About grandiose announcements and the spirit of competition. About fateful decisions and trailers that you want to watch ten times. About a huge charge of hype and high expectations. It showed what we would play and what we would discuss in the coming years. In the end, she knew how to surprise and impress.

And I don’t know what impressed me more: the battle royale based on Vampire: The Masquerade or the cooperative vampire shooter from Arkane. A co-op shooter from the creators of Left 4 Dead or a co-op shooter set in the Painkiller universe? Perhaps the most intriguing cooperative shooter from the creators of Ruiner: the teaser is very beautiful.

On the other hand, it is not so difficult to choose the main disappointment of the exhibition. Disciples: Liberation is a clear example that sometimes it’s better for the dead to stay dead. It can’t fit in my head that in the world of From Software’s winning grimdark, someone woke up one rotten morning with the thought that Disciples is such a good series, but too dark and grotesque style only harms it.

Pavel Zuev: the most boring E3 in recent years

It feels like every year E3 is getting dimmer. Yes, there are a lot of cool announcements, but the competition is gone. Previously, everyone was waiting for the presentation, not only for the sake of games, but also for the sake of a kind of competition between the mastodons of the industry. After Microsoft bought Bethesda, the entire E3 became the fiefdom of a particular green company, others look faded against its background. So it’s really a shame that Sony isn’t looking into the light anymore.

Personally, not a single presentation could make me very happy this year. I play cooperative action games very rarely, so all announcements related to this are immediately bypassed. The only thing that looks interesting in a good way is Redfall from Arkane. From one CGI trailer, it is difficult to understand exactly how the nuclear combination of immersive sim and co-op action will work. However, Arkane has proven time and time again that it can deal with difficulties and has always released cool games.

I was frankly surprised by the announcement of The Outer Worlds 2. I didn’t really like the first part, but I was really looking forward to the first Avowed gameplay trailer from Obsidian.

Criminally little is heard about the game, which was once so brightly announced. Well, not to mention S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2. Despite my initial skepticism towards the game, only its trailer managed to give real goosebumps. That’s just more of a merit of childhood memories.

The rest of the presentations didn’t really stick in my memory. Even the long-awaited Elden Ring trailer, I took it somehow coldly. After all, it is so obvious that From Software will not lose face in its own subgenre. So, after E3 there were mixed feelings. It seems that there are a lot of games, and many of them look cool, but, unfortunately, there was no such expected “wow effect”.

Vladimir Semykin: announcement of Redfall

I’ll be honest — if Redfall wasn’t made by Arkane, I would turn off the Xbox stream and permanently exclude the game from my information field. Because for me there is nothing more dreary than a cooperative shooter about the battle with the horde. And according to the first impression of the video, Arkane Austin makes just such a game.

But the studio has a huge credibility, so I tried not to jump to conclusions and take a closer look at the CGI trailer. And instead of a dumb shooter, I saw a continuation of the experiments that began in Prey: Mooncrash.

If in the original Prey the player could choose the style of passing and develop the hero in the right way, then in addition he was limited to several pre-created heroes with unique features: one has alien abilities, the other can place turrets, and so on. It seems that Arkane decided to take this idea further and make a game where you will need to use the strengths of the heroes in order to defeat opponents.

Even the abilities of the heroes seem to be taken from Prey itself: a tossing telekinetic elevator, a robot turret, analyzing the bodies of opponents to identify weaknesses — all this was already in the previous Arkane Austin game. The video also showed a short dialogue between the heroine and one of the ordinary opponents — I hope this is proof that the players will not resist a stupid faceless horde, but a full-fledged cult with its own history and motivation.

Of course, this is all just speculation — it’s impossible to judge a game from a single CGI movie. But the presented concept of Redfall intrigues and inspires optimism, and Arkane has never failed.

Valentin Shakun: favorite studios in an unexpected role

On the eve of E3, I increasingly began to catch myself thinking that I roughly understand what to expect from the announcements of certain companies. Against this background, the new projects of Arkane and Eidos were pleasantly surprised — yes, we again did not see the continuation of our favorite immersive-sims, but this does not mean that Dishonored, Prey or Deus Ex are lost forever. With them, everything would have been clear in advance, but the sudden cooperative shooter about vampires and a single superhero action game from masters of completely different genres personally arouse much more curiosity in me than the next sequels.

Platinum Games also did not stand aside and suddenly showed a cooperative action. Such strange decisions outraged many fans of all these studios, but you can look at new games from the other side — what if Guardians of the Galaxy turns out to be more interesting than Deus Ex, and Redfall opens up a new subgenre of cooperative immersive sims ? After all, if these are the games developers want, then why not?

Alina Abramyants: Japanese

I remember the last time I watched E3 in 2019, there were funny gentlemen and ladies, expected trailers, then cuts of embarrassing and best moments from conferences flew around. This year, such a heat of passion could not be expected, so I almost did not watch live broadcasts, and made up for lost time on trailers and recordings. In general, it was not possible to feel the spirit of the broadcast, so I will not talk about the brightest moment in the context of the entire exhibition.

What I’m talking about is SMT V. For me, this is another reason to buy Nintendo Switch. Cool trailer, cool design, the music is beautiful as always, and the protagonist is cute, in the spirit of one notorious series that spun off from SMT at the turn of the century. What else does.

I also remember the Summer Game Fest very well. As Jeff Keely, whose face read “well, I finally lived up to this moment”, announced the next World Premiere — Elden Ring (who would have thought). And how Sam Porter Bridges performed a mysterious ritual with a cardboard box. Apparently, he called for a genius.

Daniil Ilyasov: Guardians of the Galaxy

When we didn’t know anything about the game yet, I was waiting for the service for obvious reasons. If so, the release would most likely have passed me by — because even in the best representatives of this model it is difficult for me to resist.

The game ended up being kind of a mixture of Mass Effect and Final Fantasy, and at the core of it all is the group of characters that I find most attracted to Marvel (along with some of the Spiders). A week ago, I had no idea how much I missed this.

You can already see the roughness of the game now, and it’s mainly about the gameplay, but to be honest, I don’t care — I went through Vampyr and Cyberpunk 2077, having a lot of fun from them, so it’s not scary.

I almost always rely on emotions, and while watching the trailer and gameplay, I just felt good and warm — because of the chemistry between the characters, their goofiness and the general mood of the game, which fits perfectly with the tone of Guardians. If the game keeps all this from start to finish, then I’m sure I’ll be satisfied.

Daniil Cortez: Indie, Stalker & Pirates

Among the rather lean and frankly boring presentations of smaller games, there were many pleasant indie announcements, among which, of course, the most hopeful for Songs of Conquest — the successor to the ideas of «Heroes of Might and Magic», which I have been waiting for a year. But in general, there are enough small-caliber games — this is the part of game development that consistently pleases me.

In terms of krupnyak, the Microsoft exhibition was the brightest for me — the first half I just screamed non-stop from trailers and announcements. The long-awaited sequel to S.T.A.L.K.E.R. it’s out next year (assuming nothing bad happens and the game gets rescheduled), and the trailer looks magical. Although it’s still CGI without gameplay, I like the development vector of the game — it looks like «exactly what I wanted, maybe even a little more.»

After the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, I immediately said the following: it is strange that they put the trailer at the beginning of the presentation, because almost any announcement after this will not look so profitable. How wrong I was. Literally right after it, they showed an update for Sea of Thieves — in my opinion, the best game in the pirate setting to date. And this is not just another plot, costumes, modes, and so on, familiar to small patches of the game. This is a huge collaboration with Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean.

To say that I love the films of this franchise is an understatement, and a big game in this setting, in a large open world, has been a dream since childhood. For me, an announcement like this is like a new Silent Hill for Konami fans or Half-life 3 for Valve fans. Something I dreamed about for years but never hoped to see. And all this in a week and absolutely free (for the owners of the game, of course).

The rest of the E3 is a little rotten, but in general — not the worst exhibition in recent years. I watch almost everything, and against the general background it is still tolerable. Only one thing is stable: the PC Gaming Show still makes me ashamed of the fact that the computer is my main gaming platform. Each presentation is more shameful than the previous one, thanks even though they sometimes come across good indie announcements.

Ilya Tsukanov: Tim Schafer strikes back

Although I added about twenty different indie games to the Steam wishlist, this E3 somehow didn’t stick in my mind. Well, it’s gone and gone. There weren’t even any CGI trailers that you would want to watch later.

I don’t play multiplayer games very often, so I’ve missed a lot of big projects. Elden Ring, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 and other games I’ve been waiting for, E3 hasn’t changed anything. Almost all major announcements have been leaked for a long time, and it’s not at all clear from the announcement videos what to expect from them — and not in the spirit of the Death Stranding trailers. What kind of «NASA-punk» will be in Starfield and why it will be interesting is unclear.

Especially nondescript E3 looks against the backdrop of the recent PDXCon. They finally showed Victoria 3 — Half Life 3 from the world of global strategies, that’s how the studio’s fans were waiting for it. There was nothing even close to similar at E3.

But at least the good news is that Tim Schafer will finally make up for the failure of Psychonauts, the release of which in 2005 almost no one noticed. Many major releases left for the next year — which means Psychonauts 2 can finally draw the attention of more players to this wonderful franchise.
