The brightest comet of 2023 called ZTF (C/2022 E3) is approaching Earth! It was discovered on March 2, 2022 by astronomers from the United States, the AstroAlert | Observational Astronomy» on VKontakte. On January 12, the comet passed at a minimum distance from the Sun, that is, 166 million km, and on February 1, the celestial body will fly 42 million km from our planet. For those who are not strong in unearthly science, let us explain: this is close enough.
“The comet will have excellent visibility conditions both in Russia and in all countries of the Northern Hemisphere, because it will fly right between the Big Dipper bucket and the North Star! At this moment, the brightness of the comet can reach +5…+4 magnitudes, and the length of the gaseous tail will be more than 10° (the size of the “scoop” of the Ursa Major bucket). The approximate location of the comet is known: between Ursa Major and the North Star. Where to find the exact coordinates to navigate the sky? Astronomers share this information with each other on specialized sites such as Astronet (Russian Astronomical Network. — Note). Astronet is reporting that comet ZTF (C/2022 E3) is moving through the constellations of Bootes and Draco right now at a magnitude brighter than 7m. Who needs it — he will understand.
“With this brightness, it is very difficult to see an object within the city. If you leave its limits, then you should pay attention to the northwestern part of the sky. Far from everyone will see the North Star, and it is easy to navigate along the Big Dipper. If possible, take a telescope with you. And be sure to study the coordinates. On the occasion of the meeting with the brightest comet of the year, the Vladimir Planetarium does not plan to hold events with observations. First, the building is surrounded by trees and buildings. Secondly, observations of the sky in January showed that the telescope refuses to work due to severe frosts.
