Better than I expected
If you had told me that Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero would be a good Dragon Ball film, I would have told you that you were spouting nonsense. This film’s trailers were not promising at all: the full CG animation, another attempt to bring back the Red Ribbon, and what looks to be a cash-grab given how successful anime films have been recently (e.g. Demon Slayer Mugen Train and Jujutsu Kaisen 0). I was worried about this film and the fate of the upcoming Slam Dunk film. And I am so glad this movie proved me wrong.
First and foremost, the animation. Although I liked Dragon Ball Super Broly, I was not the biggest fan of the video-game-like animation in some of the fight scenes in that film. However, Super Hero’s CG animation was not distracting at all to me.
Sure, it may have taken a couple of minutes to get used to it, but for the most part, I’d say Toei had done a pretty decent job. And if you have seen other CG animes like Beastars or Land of the Lustrous, then this film would not be anything novel to you. But, I’d still like to see a hand-drawn film should Toei decide to make a sequel. 2D animation just hits different.
Regarding the story, it was a pretty basic 3-act structure. But then again, no one should walk into a Dragon Ball film expecting any major plot twists or shocking revelations. There are certain nitpicks regarding Piccolo’s plan in the second act or how the Red Ribbon is still a powerful organization despite the fact that it’s been confirmed to be mostly gone after Goku’s heroics in the OG series. You will find it quite enjoyable you don’t think too hard about it.
The fight scenes were quite solid this time around. The choreography, the lighting, and camera movements were all on point. Honestly, I got chills quite a few times during the third act (or it could just be the AC in the theaters).
And lastly, the characters. If you are here expecting some Goku and Vegeta action, you may be disappointed because they were barely in the film. But I, on the other hand, loved it. It’s so refreshing to see Gohan and Piccolo get the spotlight again, and the movie sure gave them the much- needed return after being reduced to mostly background characters in the Dragon Ball Super manga. The Androids looked silly in the posters, but fortunately, they were really fun to watch (they almost made me cry towards the end as well). And Pan, what a cutie! She’s easily the cutest kid character in Dragon Ball since young Goku himself. More of her, please. Thanks to this film, I hope the next one will turn the attention to the likes of Yamcha and Tienshinhan (especially Yamcha) as well.
All in all, if you are a Dragon Ball fan, I think you will have a good time with this film (if you can tolerate the CG animation or don’t overthink the plot).

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero will soar its way into theaters on August 19, 2022. The film was already released in Japan earlier this year and will now be available in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Zambia, and Vietnam. The film will debut as both an English dub version and in the original Japanese with English subtitles. The movie will be available on August 26, 2022 in India and Indonesia and shortly after, the film will also release in Malaysia and Brunei. August 31 will be the release date in the Philippines. Next month, the film will head to theaters across Singapore on September 1, Taiwan on September 8, South Korea on September 15, and Thailand, Macao, and Hong Kong on September 29.
Is Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Streaming Online?
Like the previous Dragon Ball films, Super Hero will only be available in theaters. The movie was one of the biggest films in Japan over the summer, becoming the fourth highest-grossing anime film in the country. With Dragon Ball being one of the most popular anime in the world, Toei Company and Crunchyroll (the studios behind the film) will want to keep it in theaters as long as possible. You can purchase Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero tickets and find showtimes near you at most major theater chains and ticketing vendors, including but not limited to:

With that said, there is a chance that the film will be available on Crunchyroll a few months after the theatrical release. Anime fans will soon be able to stream Jujutsu Kaisen Movie 0 on the service in September.
And that’s a film that hit the library in the same calendar year as its US theatrical release. We don’t have any confirmation that Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero will ever stream on Crunchyroll, but the service has started a trend of streaming new releases as of late so hope springs eternal.

When Does Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Place in the Franchise Timeline?
The 26th film takes place after the events of Dragon Ball Super’s Tournament of Power saga and the film Dragon Ball Super: Broly. For fans of Dragon Ball, Super Hero will be easy to follow because it’s set within the current line of continuity.
Unlike the early films in the franchise, the Super movies are all more or less canon.

The Dragon Ball films are considered anime canon, but that doesn’t mean they play a significant role in the overall story. The events of DBS: Super Hero are standalone, and the film can be enjoyed without prior knowledge of the larger story of Dragon Ball. Again, just remember that this takes place after the events of Tournaments of Power, so it’ll be more satisfying if you are caught up on Dragon Ball Super.
Dragon Ball is a series full of iconic characters. Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Piccolo, Bulma, Master Roshi, and Krillin are just a few of the fantastic characters in the franchise. A new film means even more characters to keep track of, but that’s why we’ve got character breakdowns for the newcomers.

Plot Dragonball Super Hero
The Red Ribbon Army is back, and its members are not going to become honest citizens. The evil organization that was once destroyed by Goku created more androids to take revenge on the Super Saiyan and his friends. To do this, they kidnap Pan in order to persuade the heroes to join the battle.
Pan, who is older, also indicates that «Dragonball Super Hero» will be set in the future. As IMDb points out, this was confirmed by screenwriter Akira Toriyama, who revealed that the film will be an original story and not a remake or adaptation of recent manga arcs.
In addition, the events taking place in Dragonball Super Hero take place after the Granola Saga from the manga, which opens up a whole world of interesting possibilities.
Dragonball Super Hero will also be very different from Dragonball Super Broly. During a Comic-Con@Home 2021 panel discussion, Toei Animation producer Norihiro Hayashida revealed that the film places a lot of emphasis on ‘s «life scenes that really draw attention to the rich world created by Toriyama» . The producer then confirmed that audiences can expect plenty of intense and action-packed scenes, describing the film as the perfect blend of old and new Dragonball.
