10 Best Manga Storylines Since Broly That Anime Fans Have Missed
The Dragon Ball franchise is hotter than ever. Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero is one of the biggest movies in the world and a new anime should be just around the corner. But there are so many types of fans. Some fans only watch the various anime and some read manga for example. The Dragon Ball Super anime ended in 2018 but the manga continued.
So far the manga has gone through two complete arcs since the end of the anime and the release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Some fans might not be aware of the significant developments that have occurred between Dragon Ball Super: Broly and Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero since they’re waiting for the anime to adapt them.
Moro
The first foe to fight the Z fighters after Dragon Ball Super: Broly was Moro. Moro was an ancient and powerful being who the Grand Supreme Kai defeated. Long-time fans may remember that the Grand Supreme Kai was the one that Majin Buu ate to create his fat form. He had the power to devour planets and absorb the powers of any combatant.

Moro escaped, and the Galactic Patrol recruited Goku and Vegeta to try and stop him. It was a difficult battle since Moro was mostly powered by magic, which wasn’t easy for the two Saiyans to fight against. Moro grew so powerful that he became the Earth itself before Goku was able to defeat him.
Vegeta On Yardrat
Not only did Goku get a cool new outfit from planet Yardrat, but he also learned one of his most iconic movies, Instant Transmission. He learned it on Planet Yardrat before returning to Earth after defeating Frieza in Dragon Ball Z. But during the Moro arc, Vegeta decided to go to Yardrat and see what else the species there could teach. There, Vegeta learns Forced Spirit Fission.
Since the people of Yardrat are not physically strong, they learned to control spirit energy and passed this technique to Vegeta. This training allowed Vegeta’s attacks to grow stronger and with his new technique, he could separate the energies that Moro had taken from Moro himself. Vegeta was able to make Moro much weaker because of this.
Merus
One member of the Galactic Patrol proved to be far more powerful than the others. He couldn’t defeat Moro on his own, but he was able to exhibit powers that rivaled Goku and even the gods. Turns out he was an angel in training. Merus was sent out into the universe to learn from it before joining his place among the angels.

Merus was able to train Goku in the art of Ultra Instinct before Whis got wise and told him not to. Merus was forbidden to interfere with his angel abilities, but he couldn’t resist. In the end, he used his abilities to buy Goku sometime before he was erased from existence for breaking angel law.
Ultra Instinct Perfected
Fans of the Dragon Ball Super anime will no doubt remember that Goku finally achieved Ultra Instinct in order to stop Jiren, but it was thanks to Merus that he was able to perfect it. He still has a long way to go, since there is more to the ability than a simple power-up. Goku continues to prove why he’s one of the strongest Saiyans in Universe 7.
Ultra Instinct was instrumental in defeating Moro, but it came with a time limit. Even Moro was able to hone the ability after touching Goku, but he wasn’t as skilled at it as Goku. When Goku received a godly power-up from a young Uub, he was able to use his chi to project a giant image of himself and control it to defeat Moro once and for all.
Ultra Ego
While their still rivals, Goku and Vegeta are on separate paths to gain strength. Vegeta no longer wishes to reach the same heights that Goku reaches, instead wants to reach his own. Beerus teaches him the ways of the Destroyer gods and even begins to teach him the special technique only known to Destroyers.
This training leads Vegeta to a new form passed Super Saiyan Blue. It taps into different energy than Ultra Instinct, so he calls Ultra Ego. Unlike Ultra Instinct, this form is much more primal and focuses much more on attacking than defending. It’s a perfect new form for Vegeta and a perfect way to send Vegeta on his own path rather than constantly following Goku’s lead. Just another way for Vegeta to prove why he’s one ofDragon Ball’s best characters.
Another set of Dragon Balls
Dragon Ball Super introduced the Universal Dragon Balls that were the size of planets, but the manga just introduced a fourth set of Dragon Balls. Unlike the other three, there are only two balls needed to summon the dragon instead of seven. This dragon comes from the planet Cereal and was created by the Namekian tribe that settled there.
This dragon granted the wishes of Granolah and Gas to become the strongest beings in the universe. Unfortunately, it comes at a higher price than the other dragons in the universe. In order to grant these wishes, the life span of both fighters was shortened drastically. With the reveal of this new set of Dragon Balls, came the reveal that Namekian’s aren’t originally from this plain of existence, leaving their true origins unknown for now.
Granolah
The planet Cereal was home to the Cerealian before Frieza and his Saiyans destroyed it, leaving Granolah and his Namekian guardian Monaito alive. Granolah became a bounty hunter and a powerful warrior in his own right. When he heard that there were still Saiyans alive, he wished to become the strongest fighter in the universe to exact his revenge.
A group known as the Heeter Force set him on a path to killing Goku and Vegeta, which he nearly did. It was only until Monaito revealed the truth about his survival that Granolah decided to help Goku and Vegeta to kill the real villains, the Heeter Force. Granolah’s whole revenge arc is one anime fans should forward to.
Goku Remembers Bardock
Monaito finally got through Granolah’s bloodlust by telling him that a Saiyan named Bardock was the one who saved him all those years ago. For some reason, Bardock got tired of all the death and destruction and wanted to save Granolah. Bardock left behind his scouter which had a recording of his last fight with the youngest of the Heeter Force named Gas.
After hearing Bardock’s words, Goku is hit with the memories of his parents that he lost all those years ago when he came to Earth. Since most of his on Planet Vegeta was in a pod, he only could see images of his parents. But this expanded on his new origin from Dragon Ball Super: Broly. It’s a tender moment and one that was probably long overdue.
Gas
The Heeter Force was a group that secretly worked with Frieza when he was in power. They were the reason why Cereal was attacked by Frieza and left Granolah an orphan. The youngest person in the group was Gas, who was also the strongest. After his defeat at the hands of Bardock, he swore he would become the strongest being in the universe, and he did.

Thanks to a similar wish to the one Granolah made, Gas became the strongest being in the entire universe, but it shortened his life span to only a few hours. Even the combined might of Goku, Vegeta, and Granolah couldn’t stop him. In the end, it was a last-minute intervention from Frieza that did him in.
Frieza Black
Frieza has been a looming threat in the background of Dragon Ball Super since his second resurrection at the end of the Universal Tournament. The Granolah arc brought him up a few times and Elec, the leader of the Heeter Force had summoned him to Cereal so that Gas could finally beat him. But it turns out Frieza wasn’t in the universe when Gas and Granolah wished to be the strongest in the universe.
Frieza had apparently been training in a Hyperbolic Time Chamber on some distant planet for 10 hours, which translated into 10 years for him. When he showed he immediately killed Gas and transformed into a new form that passed his golden one named Frieza Black. After immediately showcasing his powers, he left saying that he had better things to do than killing Goku and Vegeta right now.

The Dragon Ball Super manga series debuted in the August 2015 issue of Shueisha’s V-Jump magazine on 20 June 2015, two weeks prior to the Dragon Ball Super TV series’ debut. The manga series is written and illustrated by Toyotarō with supervision and guidance from original Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama. While both the manga and TV series are based on the same general story developed by Toriyama, each often go with their own separate take on events; this is in contrast to the development of the original Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z TV series, which were nearly direct adaptations of the original Dragon Ball manga series.
Most notably, following the conclusion of the Dragon Ball Super television series, the manga continued onward into its own original story arcs (the “Galactic Patrol Prisoner” and “Granolla the Survivor” arcs), which as of yet remain exclusive to the manga. Neither Dragon Ball Super: Broly nor Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero theatrical films have been adapted in whole into the manga.
In his interviews included in the series’ first, second, and fourth tankōbon, Toyotarō discusses the rough process of creating the manga series. To begin, Toriyama provides a written plot of the general story that Toyotarō then expands upon, adding in his own ideas and events between Toriyama’s established main story elements. The story is then broken out into chapters and Toyotarō draws a rough draft of that month’s chapter, and via his editor, submits it to Toriyama for review and comment. Toyotarō then draws and inks the final draft based on any of the notes or corrections provided. This process continued to evolve as the series continued onward into its post-television, original story arcs, with Toriyama notably contributing an outline for the story of the “Galactic Patrol Prisoner” arc.
Each chapter of the Dragon Ball Super manga is first serialized in V-Jump. The series began with chapters running anywhere from roughly 15 to 30 pages, but eventually settled into 45 pages per chapter. Chapters are primarily produced in black and white, with very few color pages, and thus far have only been compiled in a tankōbon format.
With the series’ 87th chapter serialization in the October 2022 issue of V-Jump (released 20 August 2022), a note alongside the final page explained that the series would be going on hiatus, “…in order to prepare the next arc.”
Select a story arc to view a chapter-by-chapter break-down of that specific arc, with additional information pertaining to the original serialization. Detailed pages have also been included for each individual chapter, which contain title pages, chapter summaries, notes, and page breakdowns.
It should be noted that prior to the debut of the Dragon Ball Super manga series, Toyotarō penned a three-chapter introductory manga to the Resurrection ‘F’ movie in the April, May, and June 2015 issues of V-Jump. While not officially confirmed, it is believed that for this reason the Resurrection ‘F’ story arc that appears in the TV series was omitted from the manga, which instead “charged ahead” to the God of Destruction Champa story arc.
Documentation of additional bonus chapters — generally first published in event booklets or collected manga volumes — is also available.
