Dr. Mario World is Nintendo’s latest release, reviving the long-dormant franchise as a free to play mobile title. It plays a bit like Tetris or Puyo Puyo, with you having to match multicoloured viruses with pills of the same colour to eliminate them. The levels start simple, with just one virus and one coloured pill and quite quickly ramp up in difficulty.
You’ll face numerous different viruses and have multicoloured pills to tackle them with.
To help get you up to speed, we thought we’d put together a beginner’s guide that includes a good few tips and tricks. It won’t turn you into a proper doctor, but it should help you eliminate the odd virus or two.
- How Dr. Mario works: Dr. Mario provides you with a bunch of challenging levels that involve eliminating all coloured viruses. To achieve that, you have to match them with a pill of the same colour Tetris-style. You’ll receive different coloured pills at random and have to drop them on the board, striving to match them with viruses of the same colour. You’ll often receive multicoloured pills – particularly as you get further into the game. In these instances, the coloured half of the pill that didn’t match will remain in the board, and you can use it to match other viruses. Lining up your placements with some good forward planning is the aim of the game here.
- Aim to destroy multiple viruses with the same pill: This is particularly handy advice when you have a multicoloured pill, as you can destroy multiple viruses in one fell swoop. Line it up so that you burst a virus and then the other half of the pill falls onto a virus of the same colour. Never waste halves of pills if you can use them to save yourself time and energy.
- You can move pill halves after they destroy a virus: If you destroy a virus with a multicoloured pill, the half that isn’t the same colour of the virus will remain afterwards. You can then move that half around like you do a regular pill and use it to either pop another virus immediately, or pop it in a location where it won’t get in the way.
- Trigger power-ups whenever possible: Power-ups in Dr. Mario World are incredibly effective, capable of clearing out multiple lines of viruses in one fell swoop. Take coloured shells, for example. You can trigger these as you would viruses, by matching three of them, and they’ll then destroy everything in a horizontal line.
Prioritise these whenever they’re available. - Save items for when you really need them: Items can give you various different boosts during a level if you activate them before you start. We recommend at least trying a level before using one though. For starters, they cost gems – the premium currency. You can get some for free while playing, but not many so you really shouldn’t waste them. Also, the items provide different bonuses so you should wait and learn what you need to help you beat the level rather than waste them when you don’t need them.
- Use the rainbow pill to eliminate mistakes: If you make a mistake, and you totally will, there is a solution: the rainbow pill. You can get this in every level and it only requires you to match a few times to get it. The rainbow pill basically serves as a pill of any colour, so you can use it to match with anything. Provided at least two viruses or pills of the same colour are part of the three, the rainbow will serve as the third.
- Use your skill as soon as it’s charged: Aside from the rainbow pill, you’ll also charge up your chosen doctor’s skill as you match like crazy during a level. Each doctor – be it Mario, Peach, or Bowser – has a different skill that serves a different purpose. Learn what it does and use it appropriately. Don’t be shy though, as there’s no real reason not to use it as soon as it’s charged. That’s just wasting the potential charge you’d get from future matches.
- Save your gold for assistant characters: Out of the seven possible boosters, you can only purchase two with gold. The rest require diamonds – the premium currency. The two boosters that you can purchase with gold are pretty worthless: one boosts your score, the other provides a random booster. Neither are going to be particularly useful when you face a challenging level. Instead, we’d recommend saving your gold to purchase an assistant character instead. These guys provide you with various statistical bonuses, and even if you unlock multiple of the same character, they’ll get a skill boost.
It’s never a waste.

Dr. Mario Gifts and Hearts
One of the most frustrating elements of Dr Mario World is the hearts feature, which limits the number of levels you can play per day.
Each time you play a stage in single player mode, one heart is consumed. Since you can only have five hearts at a time, which are displayed in the upper left corner of the screen, this greatly limits the scope of the game.
Fortunately, hearts regenerate at a rate of once every 30 minutes, and you can also receive hearts from friends as gifts. Conversely, you can gift your friends’ hearts as well as receive a free gift in the Store tab once a day. This free gift can contain items, diamonds or hearts.
Hearts can also be purchased with the in-game diamond currency, which itself is purchased with real money via a microtransaction. Five hearts can be bought for 10 diamonds, and 30 diamonds will activate an unlimited number of hearts for 60 minutes.
How Dr Mario World Events works
Dr Mario World often hosts special limited-time events. These events usually challenge the player to defeat a certain number of viruses in normal single player mode, and reward you with various coins or items when you reach certain milestones.
Dr Mario World events are completely free for all players to participate and do not require any special steps to activate. Events usually run automatically in the background, and it’s even possible to unlock event rewards through regular gameplay without even knowing the event is live.

Dr Mario World offers online multiplayer modes for matches with friends and random players, but both modes remain locked until you complete level 20.

Choose your new doctor!
When you first start your Dr. Mario World, you will be able to choose your novice doctor. Here are the options:
- Dr. Mario’s skill allows him to clear the bottommost row of blocks and viruses. In versus mode, he has an attack power of 2, medium speed, and medium defense.
- Dr. Bowser’s skill clears two rows on the board randomly.
In versus mode, he has an attack power of 4, slow speed, and various defenses. - Dr. Peach’s mastery allows her to clear a column on the board at random. In versus mode, she has an attack power of 1, fast speed, and high defense.
Don’t worry too much about this choice, as you will be able to eventually recruit other doctors through the game’s Gacha system. For beginners, we recommend choosing Dr. Mario as he is a well-rounded character.
Control the capsules!
It’s important to keep in mind that the pods you deploy can be moved around as much as you want as long as they don’t hit an obstacle for more than a second. You will know when they can no longer be moved when the capsule looks full instead of transparent.
Even if the capsule is stuck in place, making a match will make the other part of the capsule break off and you can move half of the capsule around. Gentle movements of existing capsules can help you save capsules!
Save capsules for bonus points!
The more capsules you have left when you get rid of the level of all viruses, the more bonus points you will be rewarded at the end.
At certain levels you will really need them for bonus points in order to get all three stars on a level, so try to save as many capsules as you can.
Moving away from the last tip, you should try to use as many of the remaining capsules that you have on the board as possible before throwing in new ones to be conservative! Just remember that floating capsules can only be moved left, right and up, not down!
Go to ? blocks!
To celebrate the launch of the game, there this long-awaited event is currently taking place. Starting at level 20, you will start to see floatin? blocks hang around certain levels. Once you clear the level, will you be able to hit? block and get a random reward. You can get:
- 250 coins
- 500 coins
- 1000 coins
- 3 hearts
- 5 diamonds
- 1 staff ticket
That’s all great, but diamonds and staff tickets are the best rewards. If you want to get other doctors, try to unlock as many of them as you can, as this event will only last until July 17th!
Follow your doctor’s instructions!
Once you reach level 20, you will unlock doctor’s orders.
This is basically the game’s version of the daily quests, and they all cost varying amounts of coins.
You will need a lot of coins to get new doctors, so try to complete as many of them as you can. If one of them is too hard, you can remove it to get a new quest faster.
Doctors have new statistics in Versus mode!
Versus Mode is a completely different challenge as you will be going up against other players in real time in virus matches! In Versus mode, your doctor and assistants have different statistics and it’s important to make sure they know what they are.
First doctor stat is attack. This determines how many strings of viruses are transmitted when your attack counter is full. For example, Dr. Mario has an attack power of 2, so he will send more than two rows of viruses.
The second doctor stat is speed. This determines how quickly your attack counter fills up with successful virus cleanups. Doctors with high attack power tend to have slower speed.
