The plot of Odyssey can be contained in a paragraph, or even a couple of sentences, but this in no way affects the quality of the game. The main task of the script in this case is not to distract from the gameplay. There is a motivation to move forward, there is a logic in the presentation of many completely different kingdoms. That’s enough and there’s no way to quibble.
The main distinguishing detail of Super Mario Odyssey, Cappie, fits perfectly into the game. Significantly expanding Mario’s wardrobe, he replaces mushrooms, flowers and other fauna that the world-famous plumber loved to burst all these years, though not completely, where without classics. All special abilities thus fit in the Italian at the top. It is enough to launch Cappy at the nearest enemy to gain control over him, hello Messiah, Dungeon Keeper and other toys that have become famous for such NPC control mechanics to one degree or another.
Frogs, cabbages, living statues, trees, dinosaurs, multi-colored forks — there are a huge number of targets to capture. And they all bring some changes to the gameplay. The dinosaur will allow you to destroy stone blocks, and goombas can line up in a tower, needed for a little romantic date. Each kingdom has unique creatures that can freshen up the gameplay. At the same time, the old tricks of Mario remained in place. At a certain point in the story, you will even be left alone with them so that you do not forget how to use them and what they are for.
It’s a paradox, but adventures in each new kingdom begin with the achievement of a specific goal, and not in the course of achieving it. Despite the ability to collect basic and purple coins, moons and find secret doors, there is a certain stiffness. Is it possible to safely run in the body of a huge dinosaur, examining every nook and cranny, while a boss battle awaits you around the corner, which beckons? In fact, the levels really begin to unfold when you visit them again, after defeating Bowser.
Firstly, it will become easier for you to navigate the map thanks to an important story object available after the finale. Secondly, then nothing will hold you back. The inhabitants of the kingdoms will be waiting for you with open arms and small quests, just like the first time. Plus, your next big goal — to collect all the moons of the world — will motivate you to fully explore the completed locations.
Unfortunately, the reorientation of the gameplay to the exploration of large moons greatly reduced the complexity of the game as a whole, as was the case, for example, in Super Mario 3D Land . There is a chain of levels, the difficulty of which increases from «I can pass with my eyes closed» to «Dark Souls from the world of platformers». The farther, the more complicated platforms and additional obstacles appear. However, in Odyssey, all the fun, as already mentioned, begins after the passage of the main story, so be prepared to die again and again, but follow the credits for the sequel, after all, not Super Mario Souls yet.
While you’re on the hunt for Bowser for the first time, the game will feel like a walk through the key landmarks of the kingdoms.
In addition to problems with difficulty, it is worth mentioning another ambiguous aspect of the game — bosses. Cuphead set the bar too high this year. There is hardly anyone in the gaming community who can dispute this fact. And after that, Nintendo offers you just to jump three times on a rabbit in a hat, which just spews purple goo all over the arena. Not only do the bosses not cause pain below the lower back, as they should according to the laws of the game genre (even tingling), they are also repetitive. Twice. Every. Of course, it’s hard to deny the pleasure of the battle with the dragon from Dark Souls (her again!) Or the boss of the Metal Gear class, but defeating them is too easy.
However, this doesn’t seem like much of a problem in a vibrant world where you want to linger while collecting all the souvenirs, costumes, and, of course, the moons.
