John Carter: A Fantastic History of Mars

“In terms of the work involved and the scope of the production, this is undoubtedly the biggest release of the year, coming out under the Disney brand,” says Elena Brodskaya, marketing director of the studio. – Accordingly, the stakes on it are high. This is a big, spectacular movie, a real blockbuster — you just need to watch the trailer of the film to be convinced of this. US Office Disney took the preparation of the release very seriously: in addition to the website, microblogging on Twitter, games and other materials, the studio released several really impressive trailers, and last November, international journalists were gathered in San Francisco for the presentation of five fragments of filming . BK correspondent Maxim TUULA was among those invited.

MARTIAN CHRONICLE

“Honestly, you are one of those rare people who happens to have read the original John Carter book.”0003 — was noticed to me by the director of the film, Andrew Stanton. JOHN CARTER is an adaptation of a century-old American science fiction novel called A Princess of Mars, first printed as a magazine publication with a sequel. The protagonist named John Carter suddenly finds himself on Mars and, of course, experiences the most unthinkable adventures. Later, ten more books were published, but the film was based on the first of them. Stanton recalls that Jules Verne and H. G. Wells wrote similar fiction around the same time, but he believes that it was «The Princess of Mars» that became the «Rosetta Stone» for all later science fiction writers (we can recall «Aelita» as a Soviet «revolutionary» version) . In Russia, the series appeared at the beginning of 90’s, along with a wave of pirated translations, and was reprinted several times under different covers, without gaining a particularly cult status. “Few people know about John Carter and his world — especially outside the US, is recognized by the director. Edgar Burroughs is best known for the Tarzan book series that was written in the 1920s and 1930s. But it was with the John Carter books that Burroughs began his writing career.» The Moscow office of Disney is well aware that the name of Edgar Burroughs does not mean much to the Russian audience. “We are not going to emphasize the mention of a literary source in a wide communication directed to the audience, says Elena Brodskaya. But in the materials for the press, of course, we will mention this fact, because in 2012 Burroughs’ novel about John Carter turns exactly one hundred years old. Moreover, many respected creators of spectacular Hollywood cinema, from George Lucas to James Cameron, admitted that it was Burroughs’ books that influenced their own work.

Indeed, many prominent Americans, including Ray Bradbury and Michael Crichton, admitted their childhood love for stories about Barsoom (as the Martians call their planet), although hardly anyone would deny that these books fall into the category of unpretentious pulp fiction (pulp fiction). ). Ever since the early 1930s (when the writer himself was alive) there has been talk of a Hollywood film adaptation of The Princess of Mars.0003 — The level of technology of the time prompted the authors to use animation. The material was even filmed, but the reaction of theaters, suspicious of science fiction, forced MGM to abandon the project.

The film adaptation was also interested later, but it was not until the 80s that the rights were bought by the Disney studio — in the wake of the enthusiasm raised by STAR WARS. John McTiernan (PRADER, DIE HARD) was considered as a candidate for directors, but in the end the project was again frozen due to the technological complexity of the implementation. Later, the rights to the book were acquired by Paramount, and the film was offered to Robert Rodriguez (SPY KIDS, SIN CITY), Kerry Conran (SKY CAPTAIN AND FUTURE WORLD) and Jon Favreau (IRON MAN, COWBOYS VS ALIENS), but for various reasons, the fate of the project did not work out and film adaptation again engaged in Disney. nine0015

This time around, Andrew Stanton was chosen to direct. Surprisingly to many, since the early 90s he has been working at Pixar exclusively on animated films — as a screenwriter, producer, voice actor and, finally, director. Stanton has appeared in various roles on all three TOY STORIES, as well as on FLIC’S ADVENTURES, MONSTERS, INC. , PARTY CLOUD, RATATOUUE, UP. But he earned notoriety by directing FINDING NEMO and WALL*E, both of which won Oscars for Best Animated Feature. Producer Jim Morris (CEO of Pixar) comments on Disney’s decision: «Over the past twenty years, established directors have made four attempts to start production of JOHN CARTER, but I think they had to wait for the time that would technologically allow to bring the story to the screen, and the right narrator, who turned out to be Andrew Stanton.» nine0015

JOHN CARTER will be, in fact, the director’s first experience in feature films. “Stanton’s name is hardly known to the general public without additional explanations, and if you talk in detail about his career, then this can rather cause misunderstanding among the audience: how is it, they invite me to a cool blockbuster, and the director, it turns out, has only made animated films before? » — Elena Brodskaya admits. Nevertheless, the Disney studio completely trusted Stanton, apparently deciding that it was Pixar, with its inventive visual finds, that could most adequately cope with the depiction of the world of Barsoom. “I never considered JOHN CARTER as a potential animation, I always cited him as an example of a perfect hybrid where you can combine live actors and special effects,” says the director. Before I saw STAR WARS. EPISODE 1, I presented the story of John Carter as live action. Then Gollum showed up and I thought the technology had finally reached the right level.” nine0015

Stanton tells the romantic story of how he first learned about John Carter as a child from a Marvel comic. He later read all eleven books as a teenager: “It was kind of like my version of Harry Potter. As an adult, Stanton re-read the Burroughs books while working on TOY STORY and found many flaws in them: “But surprisingly, there were some foundational elements in them that stuck in my head and stayed there when I re-read the book. This is especially true of the friendship between a man and a Martian, the story of a guy and his dog, but most of all, the romance between an earthman and the most beautiful woman on Mars, his struggle for her heart. While working on WALL*E, Stanton decided that JOHN CARTER would be his next project, especially since the timing was right: the rights to JOHN CARTER were once again available. According to the director, he had been waiting for someone else to make the film for a long time, but when Jon Favreau left the project, Stanton realized that it was time to try his hand. nine0015

STANTON AND HIS TEAM

The experience of a film career showed Stanton that he needed a partner to work on the script, and therefore he invited two more screenwriters who also loved stories about John Carter since childhood (it even got to the point that they even compared their childhood drawings). The first was Mark Andrews, also a Pixar employee (writer of THE INCREDIBLE, RATATOUYA, co-director with BRAVE), later joined by real-life writer Michael Chabon (Pulitzer Prize winner for The Excellent Adventures of Cavalier and Clay, writer of SPIDER-MAN 2). The team was tasked with turning a rather clumsy teen fiction into a story that everyone would empathize with. “The John Carter books were sort of the starting point for these kinds of movies and plots, a lot of things seemed archetypal to me,” says Stanton. — The characters were very one-dimensional — the hero, the «maiden in sorrow» and the sidekick. John Carter seemed too flawless and a little bland to me. A bit boring for us. heroic benefactor. Ever since TOY STORY, the first film I worked on, I learned one important thing: you need characters that the audience will sympathize with — especially the main character. And while working on the script, that’s what I put the most effort into.» Accordingly, in the two hours of the film, character development should take place — and therefore Stanton decided to thoroughly prepare the backstory: how John Carter became exactly the way he is. This purpose is served by the scenes in which the hero is shown — a veteran who fought on the side of the South, a man devastated by the war and having lost almost everything. In search of good luck, he goes to the West, at the same time trying to escape from civilization and people. nine0015

The director wanted the actors to fit perfectly into the created characters — so he found Taylor Kitsch (X-MEN: BEGINNING. Wolverine). In the US, the actor is best known for Friday Night Lights, in which he plays a character with a broken destiny. This is exactly what the director intended to make John Carter: «I was looking for an actor who could play a really dark hero, broken inside — but in such a way that there was a good beginning in him, whether he liked it or not.» This is how Taylor Kitsch looks on the screen — a gloomy superman, tired of the surrounding reality. nine0015

The role of the Martian warrior princess Dejah Thoris (belonging to the humanoid race) was chosen by Lynn Collins, who also played in Wolverine. However, Stanton appreciated her work in THE MERCHANT OF VENICE (where she co-starred with Al Pacino) and a brief appearance on True Blood. “Dejah Thoris was trained to rule and fight, in my understanding she embodies the thirst for what Mars needs, what it needs to survive,” says the director. – I needed a character that would bring this passion, this inner strength and talent. She dealt with it. I didn’t need to awaken that in Lynn — I should have just left everything to her. She’s just like that on the inside. And I found it electrifying.” Kitsch and Collins have already been credited as rising Hollywood stars of the first magnitude — not without taking into account the experience in JOHN CARTER. nine0015

Ironically, the two most famous actors in the film — Willem Dafoe (SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE, BODY OF LIES, ANTICHRIST) and Samantha Morton (DISSENT REPORT, IN AMERICA, GOLDEN AGE) — are almost impossible to recognize. They play the leader of Tars Tarkas and his daughter — Tarks, three-meter green Martians with fangs and four arms, drawn in CG. “I realized that I had to apply all my Pixar experience — and still cast outstanding actors,” explains Stanton. “I wanted the performers to have wonderful eyes, voice and acting skills. So that I can take these three things and breathe life into animated characters with them — even if I erased the images that I captured during the shooting. And I could not have found better and more famous actors to play these roles.” Dafoe had already worked with Stanton on the dubbing of FINDING NEMO and was pleased with the cooperation, and therefore easily agreed to the role. Other notable tarks are Polly Walker (Clash of the Titans, PATRIOT GAMES) and Thomas Haden Church (SPIDER-MAN 3). nine0015

The director wanted to achieve the effect of complete authenticity: for the viewer to believe that these huge creatures coexist with people in the same space. So on the set, the human actors didn’t have to talk to the void filled with sweat on the green screen: the tarks were present on the set — the actors were on stilts and in gray suits. “You can tell (at least I can) when an actor is talking to the void or a tennis ball,” says the director. — I just feel it, but if you put a real person in the right place, everyone will play, even if the actor is off the stage. You feel it. There is some intuition that is associated with muscular instincts, it’s just that your face and body muscles behave differently, and you don’t realize it. The same, according to Stanton, applies to cameramen: if in reality there is no intended person in front of the lens, the cameraman will automatically frame the frame in a different way. nine0015

Correcting the shortcomings of the book and pumping up drama, the authors more clearly outlined the antagonist hero, who was not in the «Princess of Mars». “I needed a great bad guy, and we looked in later books to find a really good anti-hero from earlier,” says the director. Briton Mark Strong (SHERLOCK HOLMES; SPY, GET OUT!) was chosen for the role of Matai Shang. Stanton compares it to a Swiss watch and says that other actors got out of the «wagons» just to see how it works. nine0015

HISTORICAL FICTION

The scriptwriters had to significantly correct the actual storyline, which in the original book looks quite naive and clumsy in places. Representing John Carter, they expanded the «earthly» episodes, delving into the history of the United States associated with the confrontation between the North and the South, the state of the country after the Civil War. This part may seem too «American» to the Russian audience. It should root the film in real history, but for Russia this digression looks as exotic and unfamiliar as the world of Barsoom. Resonating with the misanthropic mood of John Carter, earthly reality is painted in twilight tones. That is why the bright warm colors of Mars seem like a cheerful deliverance from a painful existence on Earth. nine0015

One of the weakest points of the book «Princess of Mars» was the inexplicable teleportation of the hero to Mars — this is how graphomaniacs usually solve plot twists, without bothering to give any acceptable interpretations. I would like to believe that in the film, John Carter gets to Mars in a more convincing way: a magical artifact appears here that can transfer a person from planet to planet, but it is not clear who needs it and why and whether the object has more practical purposes.

On Barsoom — thanks to low gravity — Carter gains superpowers: here he can make giant leaps — as it turns out, a surprisingly irreplaceable talent in battle. He encounters three Martian civilizations. First, Carter meets the Tarks, tall green natives — now nomads who have lost their advanced culture, they once dominated the planet. Tarks are at enmity with the more advanced «red people» — a humanoid technological culture. People have built cities on the planet, the largest of which — Helium and Zodanga — in turn embody two opposite poles that compete with each other. Helium (represented by Princess Dejah Thoris) is a beacon of culture, an intellectual treasury, a prosperous metropolis, which even has a prototype of representative democracy. Zodanga (personified by Matai Shang) is a warlike aggressive civilization, a city moving in search of profit on the surface of Mars on metal legs. Even in the books of Burroughs, the motives for the coexistence of different peoples were read, referring to the history of the Wild West, the relationship of the Anglo-Saxons and Indians. In the film, this issue is supplemented by the well-known confrontation between «good» and «bad» regimes and environmental issues — the selfish inhabitants of Zodanga are pushing the Martian world to death. John Carter engages in an archetypal struggle between Martian good and evil, building love and friendship with the locals along the way. nine0015

The main ambition voiced by the filmmakers is, in general, not new — they wanted to show the fantasy world as realistically as possible: «As if everything happened in reality — historical reality.» According to the director, he sought to evoke the feeling that arises when watching historical dramas about little-known civilizations — say, South American or Asian. With this approach, Stanton wants to distinguish JOHN CARTER from all other fantastic blockbusters. nine0015

The inspiration came from a photograph of the desert, processed in Photoshop, possibly from the war in Iraq. The prototype of a Martian aircraft was inscribed in a dusty landscape. Stanton liked the captured moment, in which he caught some documentary, cinema verite: “We wanted things to look authentic, we deprived ourselves of the pleasure of embellishing them, painting them and shooting them perfectly. We did the same with landscapes.”

Nature was filmed in Utah — the creators tried to minimize shooting in pavilions. Rocks and cliffs have been computer-generated into imposing stone buildings, reminiscent of the legendary Petra: «It’s like ruins you haven’t seen yet.» Precisely because the buildings grew out of the landscape itself, they came out very organically. Production designer Nathan Crowley (who worked regularly with Christopher Nolan on BATMAN) elaborates: “Three different cultures required us to have three different types of architecture. For example, I created the so-called archaic empire and visually enlarged it for tall tarks. Then I took the terrestrial modernist architecture of the 60s, imagined how it would develop further, transferred it to another planet, enlarged it, multiplied it, broke it — it turned out to be abandoned alien cities. However, after visiting real nature, my idea has undergone certain changes — I decided to build cities into the existing landscape that forms their architecture. Another task, according to the director, was to convey the atmosphere of decline: “We tried to portray the world as it approaches its end. It was as if many millennia had passed, as if history had been layered upon history.” nine0015

The authors showed special ingenuity when creating a fantastic fauna. So, the Martian dog Vula is attached to John Carter — in fact, either an amphibian, or a reptile with many limbs, which resembles one of the creatures featured in the film EVOLUTION with David Duchovny. She has the ability to move at incredible speed, and she loves Carter for being the first to come to her aid. The episode of Carter’s acquaintance with canine super-talents is not without humor — the authors of the film manage not to slide into pathos. nine0015

In another episode, Carter and Tars Tarkas find themselves in the Thark arena, where they are sent as gladiators — this is one of the critical scenes in the film. Against them, «white monkeys» are released, which, from the large gorillas of Burroughs, have turned into blind gigantic monsters, guided by smells. They appear sporadically in the books, but Stanton decided to make the fight with them one of the knots of the dramatic construction. This scene, like the battle scenes, is distinctly reminiscent of STAR WARS — with the amendment that technology has advanced noticeably since then. JOHN CARTER does not look so plastic and sterile, and the blood here sometimes still flows — even if it is blue. nine0015

MARS STRATEGY

There are many parallels between John Carter and other fantastic epics. The desert landscapes, the scale of buildings, the scale of battles on the ground and in the air, the abundance of exotic creatures, the study of mythology inevitably refer to STAR WARS — it was not for nothing that Lucas spoke about the influence of Burroughs. The casting will remind you of X-MEN: BEGINNING. Wolverine — it was played by actors Kitsch and Collins, who play the main roles here. Refers to the comic and the fact that Marvel has already published comics based on Burroughs’ books, and prepared special promotional materials for Disney for the premiere. The characters themselves — John Carter, who received superpowers on Mars, and Princess Dejah Torris, who knows how to brandish a sword and at the same time carry out mysterious scientific experiments with concentration, are obvious relatives of the «X-Men» and other «guardians». Three-meter wild natives and «environmental concerns» will definitely make you talk about the recent AVATAR — especially since one of the producers, Colin Wilson, managed to work on the James Cameron project. Nevertheless, Disney refuses any analogies: “Of course, we are flattered by such comparisons,” says Elena Brodskaya, “but it would be incorrect to compare this picture with any particular release. Each film is a separate art project, with its own strengths and weaknesses.” nine0015

It is unlikely that WDSSPR can count on the names of the actors — none of them are particularly known to the Russian public, and even the most famous of them — Willem Dafoe — is unlikely to lure the public to the cinema. The fame of the director in Russia is hardly worth mentioning. It remains to bet on the battle scale and special effects.

“The film is large-scale, it has a lot of special effects, and therefore it is easier to position it on the Russian film market. This is the kind of cinema that the Russian public expects, Brodskaya believes. — In my opinion, for our viewer it will be a much bigger hit than, say, for the European one, which is more focused on drama, psychologism. Here is what they love in Russia — adventure in a concentrated form. nine0015

Disney is not embarrassed that the title does not tell the viewer anything: “There is a theory that there are two main approaches to creating titles for a film,” Elena Brodskaya comments. — You can use words and phrases that evoke an unambiguous association with the public, lay down certain expectations (which the film may not meet later), or you can use a title that implies a riddle, a mystery. We are going the second way. That is why the word «Mars» was removed from the name — so as not to distract the attention of the audience and not cause wrong associations. Director Andrew Stanton, who removed the «from Mars» add-on from the title, justifies his decision by saying that he wanted to expand the audience: «I was told that not a single woman would go to see a film about Mars,» he jokes. — In fact, the hero becomes «John Carter from Mars» only at the end of the film. And this is really a movie about John Carter, and not about a «princess from Mars.» nine0015

The question of the audience in Russia is especially relevant in view of the chosen release date — March 8 (March 9 — in the USA): it was appointed by the head office and fell on Russian holidays. The film was originally scheduled to be released in early June, but plans may have changed to separate JOHN CARTER from Fox’s highly anticipated ALIEN prequel, PROMETHEUS, which releases on June 8th.

Russian Disney is already preparing for the release with might and main: TV advertising was launched back in the New Year holidays. “Advertising campaigns for all Disney films in Russia are always planned taking into account the peculiarities of our market and differ from the American ones,” says Elena Brodskaya. – Russia today (on a global scale) is one of the key film distribution markets, where both the volume of the box office and the peculiarities of the perception of films by the audience allow the development of individual promotional materials. We use a trailer created specifically for the Russian market, special posters. Undoubtedly, at least until March 2012, all the efforts of our company will be directed to ensure that this project takes place. Moreover, the significance of JOHN CARTER for us has increased after the confirmation of the arrival of the filmmakers in Russia – in early March we expect the director Andrew Stanton, the leading actors Taylor Kitsch and Lynn Collins, as well as the outstanding actor Willem Dafoe to visit us.” nine0015

Stanton promises epic, adventure, romance, dynamics, political intrigues on the screen. Expectations are high, and everyone wants to be satisfied — both the audience and the filmmakers.

MOSCOW, March 20 — RIA Novosti. ‘John Carter’, a sci-fi thriller in which a veteran of the American North-South War suddenly finds himself on Mars, caused Disney an operating loss of $200 million, the company said in a release Tuesday.

«John Carter» — a belated fantasy about Mars, successful and unprofitable >>

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the production budget of the film — the first feature film directed by «Wall-e» and «Finding Nemo» Andrew Stanton (Andrew Stanton) Stanton) — amounted to $ 275 million, another $ 100 million was spent on advertising and promotion. The studio itself never officially announces its budgets. nine0015

«Carter» grossed $30 million in the US for its opening weekend — the film failed to break into first place, losing to the animated film «The Lorax» (Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax). Things were much more successful in Russia and the CIS, where «Carter» set an absolute record for earnings for the first day of hire, overtaking «Pirates of the Caribbean» and gaining 5. 9 million dollars, and remains in the box office leaders for the second week in a row, having gained more than 25 million dollars. This, however, did not save the situation. nine0015

«With John Carter grossing $184 million in theaters worldwide, we expect an operating loss of approximately $200 million in the second quarter ending March 31. Thus, the company’s studio division’s second-quarter loss will range from $80 million to $120 million,» the Disney post reads.

As Deadline.com emphasizes, the announced figure turned out to be an absolute record for losses incurred during a single project. Analysts had expected Disney to lose no more than $100 million to $150 million, with $180 million being considered the worst case scenario. nine0015

Deadline.com also reminds that the Disney studio has suffered losses for the fourth year: it had to write off serious amounts for «Prince of Persia» (Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, 2010), «The Sorcerer’s Apprentice» (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, 2010) and «The Secret of the Red Planet» (Mars Needs Moms, 2011).
