Diablo is finally available digitally, despite the game being over 20 years old. Its popularity is due to the large number of different mods that add new content, improved graphics, or fix old bugs.

Diablo Immortal scandals have subsided somewhat. Now we have to wait for the mobile release of the series, count on the announcement of Diablo 4, or return to fan projects. If you want to discover something new in the world of Diablo, using mods is the best option. In this text, we present the best mods for the first Diablo. Lots of new items and monsters are just the beginning.

The Hell is the best classic

Does the mod work with Diablo in the GOG version? Yes.

The Hell is one of the most popular and most advanced mods for the first Diablo. The project is sure to appeal to hardened fans of original parts looking for new experiences. A lot of additional content (we are talking about hundreds of items or monsters) does not interfere with maintaining the original atmosphere.

The author of the mod also influenced the difficulty level. The beginning may be a little easier, but as the subsequent areas open, the opponents become much more difficult. Importantly, the development of The Hell mod has not stopped, so you can play it without problems even on Windows 10 — this mode is more stable than the basic Diablo.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

• Download the modification.
• Unzip the downloaded archive to any location on your computer.
• Modification is launched through the file «TH.exe».

The Hell 2 is a continuation of this project. The mod introduces a lot more content than its predecessor, but on the other hand it deviates a lot from the original features of the game. If that doesn’t turn you off, then it’s worth a try. In return, you’ll get a lot of new gear, monsters and quests, and even the ability to play at 60fps and in high definition.

HD Mod Belzebub

Does the mod work with Diablo in the GOG version? Yes.

Probably the youngest modification for Diablo. The name itself — HD Mod — reveals the content. We get increased resolution and improved textures. In addition to the visual side, the production mod introduces a lot of additional content into the game. Early on, we’ll see several new character classes to choose from — including Warrior, Necromancer, and Barbarian. The mod also adds new missions that will be included in new locations, and additional monsters.

It is worth noting the technical implementation of this modification. HD Mod is easy to use and its installation should not cause problems even for beginners. This product runs flawlessly on the latest Windows systems, and with widescreen support, it looks great on modern monitors.

Repeated contact with vanilla Diablo is heavy. This makes you understand what a qualitative leap was the second part (and what was missing in Diablo 3). We are already weaned from the controls and prototypes of the genre. And this is where this mod comes in. We tested two modifications with similar content — Beelzebub and Chernobog. Only the second allows you to play multiplayer. Both mods add characters and unfinished quests hidden in the original files, and — most importantly — bring comfort to about Diablo 2 standards.0003

The Awakening — a new story

Does the mod work with Diablo in the GOG version? Yes.

Do you remember the item duplication trick in Diablo? This mod fixes a common bug. But even if you are a fan of continuous weapons, the Awakening mod is still worth considering. Let’s start with the fact that the author has put a new story into the game that depicts the events that take place after the destruction of the World Stone. However, this is not the most important thing. Awakening adds many new items, monsters (and bosses) and quests.

The above duplication of objects is not the only bug fixed. For example, the author also removed invisible walls. In addition to fixing crashes, the mod introduces several features. If you have friends who are Diablo fans, quickly invite them to play The Awakening. Sharing the experience points gained makes the game fun. Finally, it’s worth adding that new music is playing in the background, and the city of Tristram has been updated a bit.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTION

• Download the Awakening mod.
• Run the automatic installer located in the downloaded archive. The mod does not need to be installed in the folder with the original game.

HOW TO START THE MOD?

• At the beginning, you will be asked to insert the disc with the original game into the drive. If you have such a disk, please do so.
• If you have the GOG.com version of Diablo, you must place the «DIABDAT. MPQ» file in the «game» directory in the folder where you installed the mod. The mentioned file can be found in the main folder with the original game.

Middle Earth Mod

Does the mod work with Diablo in the GOG version? You will need a CD.

The hugely popular Tolkien universe appears in many games and even more modifications. No wonder the wind from Middle-earth reached the world of Diablo. Interestingly, this mod was created on the basis of the original Lord of the Rings, that is, before the premiere of the film trilogy. Let’s focus now on the content of the modification. The Middle Earth mod tries to restore the original production and breathe as much of Tolkien’s work into it as possible. In Tristram we will meet with Gandalf and Galadriel, in the dungeon we will fight with orcs and trolls, and Morgoth will be the final boss.

This mod is not a simple replacement for the names of characters and objects. The authors greatly influenced the game, and also fixed several crashes. First of all, the difficulty level has been increased significantly. Monsters have received a lot of resistance (and they deal more damage while doing so), and finding unique items is now harder. To prevent players from being completely crushed by opponents, the modification adds new spells — including 30-second immortality and instant escape to the city.

INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

• Download Middle-earth mod.
• Unzip the downloaded archive to any location on your computer.
• The modification is launched through the file «diablo.exe» — the disk with the original game is required.

HOW TO PLAY?

Middle-earth modification is designed for multiplayer games. For this reason, it is not recommended to start the single player mode — but this does not mean that you cannot play alone. Just select «Multi Player» mode, then «Direct Cable Connection», create or select a hero and finally select «Create Game». In this way, you create a local server and avoid errors that can occur in single player mode.

Rebirth

Does the mod work with Diablo in the GOG version? Yes.

Rebirth is another item on the list of the most famous and popular Diablo mods. True, the forum on the official website of the project is already dead, but looking at the statistics, it is safe to say that hundreds of people have played this modification. Some of them directly call Rebirth not a mod, but an unofficial addition to the game.

Rebirth offers a lot of fresh content — items and hordes of enemies. Compared to slightly newer mods, however, this may not seem particularly reassuring. The previously mentioned modifications introduce not only novelties, but also technical improvements in the form of higher resolution or textures. But Rebirth deserves to be called one of the best Diablo mods out there. The server of this modification is currently inactive, so it is worth playing alone or with friends.

• OPTION 1: go to the mod’s official page and create an account there, then download the Rebirth mod (you must be logged in).
