There were talks that Devil May Cry 5 would include co-op multiplayer, and the answer is certainly a bit wishy-washy.

The latest entry in the Devil May Cry series is here in all its glory and now players want to know: does Devil May Cry 5 have co-op multiplayer? It’s a topic that has been raised in the past, and even lightly touched on at various reveals, but no concrete explanations have been given. Let’s clear the air and figure out if Devil May Cry 5 has co-op, and if so, how it works.

It’s a fair question, wanting to know whether Devil May Cry 5 has co-operative play, but unfortunately the answer is a wishy-washy “well yes, but actually no”. There are three playable characters in Devil May Cry 5 and they each cross paths throughout the campaign. While most levels are played from the perspective of one character, some do offer alternative views.

For example, in one of the earlier missions when playing as Nero, you might be able to see V off in the background killing some demons. Meanwhile, if you play through as V you might see Nero running along some buildings in a mission you just cleared. How the co-op in Devil May Cry 5 works is that, if you’re online and there is an available player, that version of V or Nero could be another player. This will be noted by their name on the side of the screen.

During co-op, players won’t be able to interact, but they can see one another fighting.

Devil May Cry 5 will let you know if another player is “playing co-op” with you if the side of the screen says “Starring…” and then the person’s name. In some instances, if the game is unable to match you up with another player, it will simply say “The DMC crew” which is a recording of the developers. However, if it says “xx_DemonSlayer69_xx”, there’s a good chance that it’s another player.

There are no real co-op options in the main menu and nowhere to invite someone to your game. The co-op in Devil May Cry 5 is akin to waving at someone walking along the sidewalk as you speed past in your car. Even if you do get matched up with a co-op player, it’s unlikely you’ll really be focused on what the other player is doing. The reason for this is that the two characters are often separated by a wall or completely separate from one another.

There is a benefit to this loose co-op experience in Devil May Cry 5. At the end of the level, if you rate someone as “Stylish” they will receive a gold orb – a valuable item that can revive you with full health. Similarly, players can give you a stylish rating so you get the reward. The only other option is to not rate someone, so there’s no reason not to throw them a bone.

While there is technically some kind of co-op multiplayer in Devil May Cry 5, there’s no way to set up a session with friends. Furthermore, even if you could set up a co-op session, the characters rarely exist in the same fighting space. So the answer to the question of whether Devil May Cry 5 has co-op is still “well yes, but actually no”.

How Multiplayer Works in the Game

By
Dalton Cooper

Devil May Cry 5 technically features multiplayer and co-op functionality, but it’s not quite what fans may have been expecting from Capcom’s latest game.

Prior to release, there was speculation that Devil May Cry 5 would have multiplayer and co-op features after they were listed on the game’s Steam page. However, Capcom barely touched on Devil May Cry 5‘s multiplayer and co-op features in the months leading up to release, and now that the game is actually out, we can see why.

The multiplayer and co-op features in Devil May Cry 5 are very barebones. Players can’t jump into games with friends or fight alongside a partner for an entire level. On the contrary, they will sometimes be paired with a random person online, who can sometimes be spotted in a level, and rarely be around to fight alongside the player in battle.

There is really no point to the multiplayer and co-op in Devil May Cry 5, and it would be a stretch to even call it «multiplayer and co-op.» There is one big benefit to it, though, and that is whenever players are paired with someone else, they are given the option to rate them. If players are given a «Stylish» rating from someone they’re paired with, then they are gifted a gold orb. Gold orbs, for the uninitiated, are some of the most valuable items in all of Devil May Cry 5.

Gold orbs can be used to revive Dante, Nero, and V when they are downed in battle. This means that players can get through some of the game’s tougher boss fights on higher difficulty settings with minimal frustration. Gold orbs are otherwise only acquired through a daily log-in bonus, purchasing one per difficulty level in the shop, and finding the ones that are hidden throughout the levels. Alternatively, players can use red orbs to revive themselves as well.

The ability to use red orbs to revive in Devil May Cry 5 has been the source of some controversy, as they can be purchased using the game’s microtransactions. However, in our own Devil May Cry 5 review, we pointed out how the game is balanced in such a way that players should have a pretty consistent supply of red orbs and should never feel the need to bust out their wallet unless they just want to get all the upgrades as fast as possible.

There is also a trick to farm red orbs and get rich quick in Devil May Cry 5, though Capcom will probably patch that out eventually. Future updates will also bring the Bloody Palace DLC, but we have no idea if Capcom plans to flesh out the game’s multiplayer features any further.

Devil May Cry 5 is out now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

Fans Devil May Cry 5 turned the PC version of Capcom into a cooperative action game. The mod that changes the gameplay is already available for download at Nexus .

The authors of the patch are Dante enthusiasts and Raz0r. You need to understand that the game on release had limited co-op at some levels, when several characters intersected in the story. A similar one was available in Resident Evil 6 .

Modders were able to get co-op to work in most of the story missions, as well as in Bloody Palace mode. Up to three people can play at the same time, but they do not have the opportunity to choose the same characters.

The modification also allows you to enable graphics options that were previously only visible in cutscenes. And in order not to interfere with partners, the developers changed the pause menu.

Devil May Cry 5 can now be played with three players

14.08.2019 11:02

Devil May Cry 5’s co-op mode is only available for two players and Capcom doesn’t seem to be changing anything. So the fans decided to take matters into their own hands and add the ability to play with three players, including completing most of the missions.

A co-op mod for the popular slasher can be downloaded from the Nexus Mods site and allows real-time play with different users. You can do this for one of the three main characters. Supported missions: 3, 4, 14, 15, 16 and 17. It’s amazing that the mod allows people to connect online. You just need to turn it on before starting the mission in order to find other players.
