PS4’s Promising Soulslike Capcom Game That Never Released, Explained

By
Jonah Schuhart

Despite being in development for eight years, Capcom has still shown no sign of ever releasing their procedurally generated Soulslike, Deep Down.

In 2013, Capcom announced the development of their newest IP, a procedurally-generated Soulslike called Deep Down. Since then, Capcom kept fans in perpetual suspense as they released trailers, gameplay showcases, and periodically renewed their IP license for the game. However, Deep Down has never actually seen the light of day, and most likely never will.

Deep Down began as Capcom’s PlayStation 4 exclusive response to the success of Dark Souls. It borrowed the overall tone and aesthetic from the Souls series while simultaneously providing their own spins on the formula. Capcom designed Deep Down‘s levels to be procedurally generated in a similar manner as roguelikes such as Hades and The Binding of Isaac. It also had a heavier focus on online co-op designed for up to four players. What little story elements Capcom let slip through hinted at a plot similar to Assassin’s Creed, where characters in the future relive moments in time from the past. It was also supposed to be one of the first titles on Capcom’s newest engine, Panta Rhei, before the company dropped their prospects for a new engine altogether and continued using the RE Engine and MT Framework.

Despite the fact that very little is known about Deep Down, according to Game Rant, Capcom purportedly nearly completed development on the game. The fact that this happened in spite of previous delays, and the separation of the original development team, would be amazing if not for the fact that the game has shown very few signs of releasing anytime soon. Likewise, there’s no actual evidence that Deep Down reached later development stages. Gameplay showcases were few in number, and only ever occurred shortly after the game’s original announcement. The assumption that Capcom is merely keeping their hold on an IP that may be valuable without actually working on it is not unreasonable.

Still, the fact that Capcom has continually renewed the trademark for Deep Down is enough to keep gamers on their toes. Capcom has until June 2021 to renew trademark license for Deep Down, so the jury technically is still out on whether or not the game does actually come out. Plenty of games have been caught in proverbial «development hell» before, and yet eventually found their way on store shelves in spite of it all. This includes Capcom games, with titles like Devil May Cry 5 getting teased for almost ten years before finally releasing. Maybe one day Deep Down will follow in their footsteps.

Until that day, however, Deep Down fans should not hold their breath. Just because other games persist through delays doesn’t mean Deep Down will. It was originally developed for a now-outdated console, and would likely require further development to have it suit the newest generation. Furthermore, Producer Yoshinori Ono revealed that the development team disbanded in 2019. Despite his claims that Capcom is continuing development on the game, there’s been no news on which team has picked up production. Unfortunately, it seems that Deep Down fans are stuck in limbo for the foreseeable future.

at heart we are game developers

Since 2011, Valve hasn’t released a full single player game.

Since 2011, Valve has not released a full single player game. After the announcement of the Half-Life: Alyx VR project, the founder of the company, Gabe Newell, published an appeal:

“Valve is excited to be back in the world of Half-Life. Virtual reality has energized us, so we have put a lot of effort into this technology. But we are also game developers at heart, and dedicating ourselves to a VR game is very ambitious. The new Half-Life is the culmination of many things that are very important to us: a really great game, cutting-edge technology and open platforms. We’re really looking forward to people trying it.»

Half-Life: Alyx is a redesigned Half-Life 2 backstory that Steam VR owners will get for free. The game will be released in March 2020.

A disgusting absurdity. Wanted: Dead review

Wanted: Dead is the worst game released in the last 10 years and, at the same time, a satirical statement. But it is impossible to understand what idea the developers put into the project — this is a terrible product that is tritely unpleasant and hard to play.

Postponements, rumors of problems in the studio, lawsuits with copyright holders, press screenings around the globe — these events attracted the audience to Atomic Heart. The iXBT.Games editors were among the publications that were allowed to feel the project in its full form, go through the game from start to finish and see what the five-year period was spent on at the Mundfish studio. Spoiler: the result blew our minds — Russian developers have never done this before. And hardly anyone will do it in the future.

ZywOo spoke about Vitality’s performance in the Candidates stage at the Major.

«Maybe deep down we were thinking, ‘We’re number one, so we need to show it.’ But it turned out that this was not the case.

This is a major, everyone shows their best here. Let’s start the «legends» stage with a clean slate, with a score of 0:0, there is no pressure on us. Now other teams are under pressure, but not us,” said Mathieu “ZywOo” Herbault.
