New Dead Space game: Is it a sequel or remake? Plans explained

The definition of a «remake» is difficult to pin down. On the one hand, we have games like The Last of Us Part 1 and Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy. They are pretty much the same as the original material, with the aesthetics modernised.

On the other hand, we have the Resident Evil 2 and 3 remakes, which bear little resemblance to the PS1 games.

And let’s not forget 2020’s Final Fantasy VII Remake, which turned out (SPOILER ALERT) to be more of a sequel. The use of «remake», here, was a bit of wordplay.

So what about the Dead Space Remake, released on 27th January? Is it a remake? A remaster? A reboot? Keep reading to find out.

The answer to that question is more simple than it seemed at first — we can confirm that the new Dead Space game is a remake! The first clue that we saw was on Twitter, where EA’s official account described the new Dead Space as “a classic rebuilt”.

And then we saw an even more cut-and-dry confirmation of the game’s status as a remake. Under the trailer on YouTube, an official description says: “The sci-fi survival horror classic Dead Space returns, completely rebuilt from the ground up by Motive Studios to offer a deeper and more immersive experience.»

The YouTube description adds: «Harnessing the power of the Frostbite game engine and next generation consoles, this remake brings jaw-dropping visual fidelity and improvements to gameplay while staying true to the original.”

Since this new version of Dead Space is made by EA Motive, who have never made a Dead Space game before, it remains to be seen if they stay fully faithful to the original or if they splice in some new ideas.

EA Redmond Shores — the company that made the original Dead Space, and later became known as Visceral Games — shut down in 2017, so it will be interesting to see what a different company does with the franchise.

That statement makes it clear that the new Dead Space is a ground-up remake from scratch, as opposed to a cosmetic remaster like Mass Effect: Legendary Edition, which could lead to some drastic upgrades.

As we hear any further details, beyond the improved graphics and gameplay enhancements that have already been promised, we’ll be sure to let you know.

How The New Dead Space Teases A Sequel

By
Fletcher Varnson

Players who have already completed EA and Motive’s Dead Space remake have discovered an Easter egg that may tease a potential Dead Space 2 remake.

Although the Dead Space remake only just came out, attention is already turning to whether EA and Motive will follow it up with a Dead Space 2 remake as well. It’s only fair that anticipation is building for future installments: fans have been waiting for new Dead Space material for over a decade after EA ambiguously ended the series by never making its fourth installment. But Dead Space (2023) appears to be stoking the hype for a potential Dead Space 2 remake, as new material in the game suggests there may be future (remade) missions for Isaac Clarke.

While EA hasn’t confirmed that the Dead Space remake will be followed by Dead Space 2, there is cause to believe one could be put into development. Not only has Motive’s Dead Space remake been well-reviewed, but it has come at a time when other franchises like Resident Evil and Final Fantasy are receiving remakes of their classic entries. With the refurbished visuals and promising new additions that have been made, it seems the Dead Space series may be due for more content.

Dead Space’s New Game Plus May Tease A Dead Space 2 Remake

In fact, the Dead Space remake may have teased a sequel with its new features. According to GameSpot, the remake’s addition of a New Game+ Mode comes with new text logs that aren’t unavailable in the first playthrough of the game. These new text logs are messages sent between two characters who talk about looking for new work at the Sprawl on Titan — AKA the setting of Dead Space 2. Though this may only be a subtle nod to the sequel, it’s also possible that it suggests a Dead Space 2 remake is planned.

Dead Space 2 Remake Isn’t A Certainty

Though the Dead Space remake’s Easter egg is highly suggestive of a follow-up Dead Space 2 remake, EA may choose to go with another direction for the franchise’s future. As noted by Dexerto, EA bundled Dead Space 2 into Dead Space remake pre-orders on Steam, which loosely suggests the publisher does not intend to remake the sequel. However, EA may play things by ear and wait to see how the Dead Space remake lands with players before making any plans about future installments.

At this stage, it’s hard to say what EA intends to do with the Dead Space franchise. With the remake’s teaser suggesting new content related to Dead Space 2 and Dead Space 4‘s never-confirmed cancelation, there are plenty of avenues left for the franchise to take. In any case, the recently released Dead Space remake is earning plenty of plaudits, and with the original Dead Space 2 having plenty of fans, it would make sense for a follow-up to eventually get made.

After the announcement, The Callisto Protocol attracted attention as the spiritual successor to Dead Space, and the developers themselves added fuel to the fire and praised their project, including in a series of detailed interviews on the Ars Technica channel . We, among other things, were promised a harsh and terrible horror — and they did it so beautifully that I really wanted to believe it. True, neither the successor to Dead Space, nor at least an elementary strong game did not work.

At the very least, the game can surprise with landscapes

After the end credits, The Callisto Protocol leaves the feeling that it has not yet decided what it wants to be. In terms of visual style and theme, this is really Dead Space — familiar holographic menus, the absence of any extraneous interface (with the exception of rare hints), a life bar around the hero’s neck, space stations, monsters from nowhere, and so on. However, in terms of gameplay, the project came out too clumsy and stuck right between action and horror, never daring to lean in one direction.

The Callisto Protocol fails to be horror, because horror must be scary and / or constantly on suspense: a weak hero, few resources and a lot of enemies, fear of the unknown or psychological tricks. Not all elements need to be present at once, but a good horror film rarely makes you feel safe. The first Dead Space is just a great example — slow, viscous, with the help of the cramped corridors of the Ishimura and tenacious necromorphs, it created a sticky atmosphere of danger. Even with a set of various weapons, moving forward was not very comfortable — you still had to shoot accurately, and opponents in various combinations interfered with normal aiming and constantly strove to reduce the distance to the clumsy character.

Flugengege…. Flugegenhane…. What was the stop word? (Everyone was joking about it, but such a scene)

The Callisto Protocol is desperately trying to copy this approach — the same cramped corridors, the same play of light and shadow, and mutants don’t die in two hits. There are far fewer strange sounds. However, this does not work on the atmosphere in the first place because Jacob, unlike Isaac, is a simple guy — just a little, he will immediately load his baton in the forehead. A lot of attention is paid to melee combat here: the hero can dodge blows for an infinitely long time, and resources for hand-to-hand combat are not needed — the character is simply too strong to somehow worry about him. There is always a tool at hand to solve problems, and if someone is too brazenly climbing forward, then you can throw him away with telekinesis.

Yes, at the very beginning the hero can die quite quickly, but it’s worth getting used to the dodge system (which, by the way, does not always correctly register stick deflections, which leads to stupid deaths), learn how to perform endless combos through canceling animations and pump up damage a little , as ordinary opponents will no longer pose a threat. The game does not know how to scare, making it extremely stupid — at the level of a terrible screaming muzzle from a “mysterious person with his back to you” tm .

The action from The Callisto Protocol is also useless. Again, you can refer to the inspirational series by taking Dead Space 2. Compared to the first part, the sequel went too far towards the action and at the same time worked well with the pace. The run along the second «space» is like a roller coaster, where situations, like enemies, constantly changed, and cool staged moments entertained until the very end. The recent Resident Evil Village did exactly the same — the mood and even the approach to the gameplay in it change every couple of hours.

Bloody deaths remained in place

«Callisto» looks very faded against this background. For all 7-8 hours of passage, one and a half staged moments will be typed at most. The whole game is built around finding fuses for doors (seriously, this is the only thing to do here) and fighting in arena rooms. In itself, this is neither good nor bad — implementation is important, and there are problems with this, because the approach to battles after receiving telekinesis does not change until the very end credits. There are few types of enemies here, and with those that are, they couldn’t come up with anything interesting — they just rush into the frontal, and you scatter them with a club, then telekinesis, or a shotgun. They rush — you scatter. They rush — you scatter. Time after time, room after room, with the same techniques, without unique situations, control over resources, tactics and the slightest shred of sense. There are more ideas in one opening level of Resident Evil 4 than in the whole of The Callisto Protocol.

Outside of the battles, the only thing that surprises the «protocol» is the insane amount of ventilation that you need to crawl through and the walls between which you need to squeeze. There is really nothing to explore here, there are no tasks to use at least telekinesis, the level design (not to be confused with graphic design) is primitive — and it is rather strange to see this in a game that was released several console generations after Dead Space 2 and Resident Evil 4.

Looks like the «new generation» has finally arrived

From time to time The Callisto Protocol decides that it’s time for stealth… And it would be better if he didn’t. An entire chapter is dedicated to crouching and lazily carving out blind mutants, corny closing the passage further. In theory, they should respond to sounds, but in reality, mutants are active only when they hear the steps or shots of the hero — in all other cases, what is happening is absolutely purple to the monsters, even if you commit a hidden murder (certainly with screams and screams) half a meter away from them . It’s especially funny when Jacob then whispers over the radio that he’s not allowed to make any noise.

Added to all this are problems with the PC version. Crazy slowdowns every couple of minutes and constant crashes are just a small part of the problems for your money. The game is now being literally processed with a file — the first patch has already fixed some of the freezes that occur when compiling shaders in real time, but everything else has remained in place for now. Most likely, in the future the project will be brought to an adequate state (the season ticket needs to be sold somehow), but normal quality must be ensured on the day of release, and not sometime later. And even if the technical part is brought to mind, this will not improve the more important aspect — the gameplay.

After all, The Callisto Protocol is conceptually similar to Dead Space, but in reality it is more like The Order: 1886 — another graphically beautiful project without a single entertaining idea behind its soul. The «Protocol» was considered the heir to the «dead space», but not only does it not improve aspects of its mastermind, but it cannot even repeat them at the same qualitative level. Of course, hitting mutants with a club is fun for a while, because combat is almost the only thing that is implemented here more or less normally. However, as it turned out, you won’t get far on this, and the work of the Striking Distance studio is simply not able to offer something more.

Pros:

  • great graphics — especially facial animation;
  • is a fun hand-to-hand combat system.

Flaws :

  • everything else — from the fact that the game does not have a single memorable moment and even a hint of horror, and ending with a primitive level design, endless fuses, boring fights and bosses.

Graphics

What can not be taken away from the game is the excellent graphic design. Lights, environments, and especially the faces of the characters look photorealistic in places. And then the frequency for a few seconds drops to five frames per second and destroys the slightest hint of immersion.

Sound

To be honest, I expected much more from The Callisto Protocol in terms of sound accompaniment. In a couple of places, picking monsters in the vents can make you tense, but otherwise nothing particularly outstanding.

Single game

Looking for a million fuses and killing the same enemies in the arenas is all that the project offers. There are no interesting staging moments or situations here, just as there is nothing frightening (except for the technical condition).

Team play

Not available.

Overall impression

The Callisto Protocol wanted to be either a horror or an action movie, but in both cases it missed. She is not capable of scaring and even keeping in suspense, and for action she desperately lacks at least some exciting moments and a variety of combat situations. But it looks beautiful.

Estimation : 5 0007

Dead Space — 2 passage.

Signs. Part 6. Walkthrough Dead Space 2.

Ellie, albeit in a very deplorable state, is doing well. True, our technician will have to look for the necessary parts for the drill. The power supply is in the box behind the drill, the board is at the top. If the search is delayed, Isaac contacts Ellie and specifies what needs to be found. By the way — the voice acting in the game is gorgeous, the emotions are conveyed very well.

We rise on the platform to the roof of the drill. Now Isaac is waiting for the most amazing journey. Well, who else can boast that they shot Necromorphs on the roof of a working giant drill? The main thing is not to come close to the spinning blades — they will grind into porridge.

Mutants against troublemakers and will climb from everywhere. But pretty soon the drill will reach the government sector. Isaac will have to fly again with a not-so-soft landing. But there is no time to complain. We hasten to go down to the girl.

Wow, Ellie found the Stormtrooper! Now she can get out. We send the indignant girl into outer space. After all, Isaac still needs to destroy the Obelisk. Who if not him? This decision was hard for Clark, but it makes no sense to die together. The girl has a great chance to start a new life. And Clark? Clark is crazy.

Isaac doesn’t know what to do now. The pointer is gone, where to go? But the main thing is that the “fourth” has reached the government sector, now it is close to the goal, as it was then, on Aegis-7.

We go down to the broken drill and watch how crowds of necromorphs climb out of the broken hole. Having beaten off the first wave, we break open the panel with the inscription «UNIT 28» at the door, and with a malicious giggle we go inside.

And they are already waiting for us there. And not dead, but alive. The government sector was gloriously sealed off from the necrotic scourge…until Isaac arrived. And what will Clarke do? Take, and cut down the electricity. And he will, giggling, watch how the erupted necromorphs devour fresh flesh.

Meet my old dead friends

Of course, mutants won’t say thank you. The obelisk did not teach them politeness. But now it’s fun here too. Songs, dances. Just a holiday. I don’t think the sector’s guards were ready for a Necromorph attack. They couldn’t catch Isaac either. And if they were polite, maybe Clark would tell them about the Nine Rules of Necromorph Hunters. But now — pipes!

After a short fight, we find Nicole. The blonde finally decided not to interfere and even help. Now Isaac knows where to go.

Another door with a DNA scanner. It’s good that the person we need died here, next to us. We drag Lars to the door, move on.

And where did the cleanliness of the government sector go? Everywhere is a familiar environment — blood, corpses, necromorph soldiers. Everyone has their own idea of order. Isaac aims his.

In the hangar with boxes we hear a familiar rustling. Judging by the sign, the Stalkers are waiting for us. We take out the power supply unit from the connector above the head, we replace it with the broken one at the far end of the hangar.

And the Obelisk is getting closer and closer. With each step, the anxiety grows stronger, the attacks of the Necromorphs become more and more violent. The path lies through the laboratory, where Obelisks are created layer by layer. Well, Isaac, are you proud? After all, this is your creation. Your poisoned mind helped people create these infernal machines. (Isaac did not want to create it, but the control of the Obelisk cannot be overcome. Why do the controlled go crazy? They are too stupid to understand what it is about. And smart technicians and engineers like Clark and Strauss heard the whisper of the Obelisk, drew layouts and formulas, and according to the drawings Isaac brave scientists and created a new obelisk)

We rush to the stairs, climb up. One thing is not clear — why not just crawl through? Half a meter would have been enough for Isaac not to burn the top of his head. No, you need to spice up your hike.

Turn off the laser system, move on. There will be many Necromorphs. That is, more than usual. They all walk, crawl, run to the call. Call of the Obelisk. He beckons the dead like a candle flame — moths. Millions of dead. And you, Isaac, go that way too.

And here it is — the Obelisk. To put it mildly, it is larger than before … yes, it is simply huge! And below, crowds of necromorphs rage.

Now that the Obelisk is activated, Isaac has four steps to complete. About which Strauss was muttering all the way.

Step 1: get into a dark car.

Step 2: Tighten the screws.

Step 3: Insert the needle into the eye.

Step 4: acceptance.

Surgical precision is required to keep Isaac alive after such a procedure. The needle must be inserted exactly into the pupil, otherwise Clarke will turn half of her face. There is no need to rush, the faster the needle moves, the more nervous the patient is.

It’s time to go to the Obelisk. It would seem — nothing complicated. Hacked the panel, opened the door, went out. But in the room with the «fourth» Ubermorph miraculously appears — the Highest form of the Necromorph. Similar to the Hunter, but regenerates many times faster, runs faster, hits harder. But it’s not for nothing that we have stasis.

You will have to fight your way to the Obelisk. And again, to the rumble and growl, and again iron boots knock along the corridors. And on the heels, with a gambling squeal, there is an immortal monster. It is not entirely clear where he gets the mass for regeneration from. Obelisk’s tech is so cool.

And you have to run a lot. It would seem — the Obelisk is here, next to it. It would seem … Most of the way you can just run without being distracted by the Necromorphs. But in places using stasis and a pipe cutter, Isaac needs to cut a path through dead flesh.

Five steps to the target… and a spear pierces my shoulder. Thademan, the bastard, got there first. And now, not in a neighborly way, he shoots from a dart gun. With a groan turning into a growl, the firm hand of the «fourth» pulls out the metal from the long-suffering body. The second arrow pierces the palm. Yes, how much can you?!

Whoever comes to us with a spear… will receive it in a plowshare. Oh, and here’s Nicole. It remains only to silently complain to his beloved, clinging to his incorporeal chest.

What, are you waiting for the credits? Maybe even world peace? Nicole makes one last trick in her death.

And now… time to die.

In the back of his mind, Isaac will have to fight Nicole and the dark Pack. Victory or death! And then look, the Creators need to be absorbed. But no one gave consent. And why does he, Clark, need such unity? Better somehow without him than with a dead girl wishing death.

The metropolis is collapsing. A mechanical female voice announces the imminent explosion of the reactor. The quiet red pulsation of the ICS echoes the nervous beats of the heart. Everything, Isaac. This is the end. But that doesn’t make it any less sad and insulting, does it? So much time passed… survived where others died… and here…

Ellie! Damn it, it’s back! So, get your ass up and go to Stormtrooper.

People fly, how they fly. The main thing is to catch up with the ship and not smear the body on flying debris.

Damn nice! Oh, nice. Did not leave in trouble. And if I were a blonde, everything would turn out … but let’s not talk about the bad. Everything, Isaac. Finally it’s all over. The church is destroyed, Tademan is dead, the laboratory burned down in a flame along with the clinic. The obelisk is no more. But ahead, what lies ahead for you, brave technician?

Whoever waited for the end credits to end will be able to witness a very entertaining conversation. The obelisks will be restored. Maybe in months, years. Where will you be at this time, Isaac?
