Dead Space 2 is an amazing game. I’m going to write about its scary moments, cool kills, and how much I dig the main character’s internal struggle, but Dead Space 2 is about more than this. When I beat it for the first time, I sat on the couch with my heart racing and dissected the journey I had just taken. Then, I started my second playthrough, and when that was done, I jumped into a new game for the third time. Dead Space 2 is just that good.
It’s been three years since the events of the first game, but protagonist Isaac Clarke still can’t catch a break. At the beginning of Dead Space 2, he wakes on a space station known as the Sprawl and finds the place is overwhelmed by an outbreak of reanimated corpses called Necromorphs. From the very first moment of the game, Isaac’s fighting for his life.
Loading
This is where you come in. As Isaac, you’ll pick up your plasma cutter, don an engineering suit and take the fight to the beasts out to kill you. The overarching goal is to find and destroy the religious idol (known as the Marker) causing all of this, but the story that makes Dead Space 2 great is the internal war Isaac’s fighting. Unlike Uncharted’s Nathan Drake who can kill a few hundred pirates and never seem worn down by it, Isaac is totally ruined by the events of the original Dead Space. He saw things no man should have to during his time on the spaceship USG Ishimura, but it’s the fact that Isaac’s girlfriend died on the vessel after he encouraged her to work there that really haunts him.
Isaac’s losing his mind in Dead Space 2. The guilt is tearing his very sanity apart. That’s heavy stuff and it makes for a really engaging story. Isaac doesn’t let anyone else in on the fact that he’s coming unglued, so as a player I get to see who he really is and the facade he presents to the other characters. Isaac’s internal conversations and hallucinations are among my favorite parts of this game.
But I have lots of favorite parts to Dead Space 2. Right behind Isaac’s struggle on my list of cool stuff is the combat. It’s more satisfying than it was in the original. Isaac’s fast and light on his feet. You can stomp crates in a jiff and melee attack bodies for loot, grabbing things with your telekinesis is responsive, and mixing all of this together with the different weapons in the game is a blast. Slowing down a Necromorph, blowing off its arm, and using the severed limb to impale the foe on a wall is a thing of beauty that doesn’t get old.
The cast is fleshed out, but Isaac steals the show.
Dead Space 2 is pretty much the best haunted house attraction ever. Visceral stripped out the stuff that slowed down the original game (backtracking, getting disoriented, etc.) and ended up with a fast-paced game that’s suspenseful and scary at the same time. You’re funneled down these halls and corridors on your way from Point A to Point B, and ghouls pop out for you to blast. I know that «linear» is a bad word in the video game industry, but the package is so well done here that I can’t knock Dead Space 2 for taking me on a very specific ride that’s marked by awesome moments, environments that range from a cheery schoolhouse to pitch black rooms, and sound that’s so well done I’d find myself trying to figure out if it was a monster making its move or my dog rummaging in the living room. Toss in some new disturbing enemies and surprises I won’t ruin for you and you have a game that can feel like «the same old thing» at times but becomes much more than that as a whole.
I’ve already said that I’ve played the game over and over, so it’s important to point out that no ride needs to be the same. Dead Space packs returning weapons such as the saw blade-spitting Ripper as well as brand new items like the Detonator and its trip mines. Each of these weapons — along with your suit, telekinesis and stasis module — can be upgraded for maximum ass-kicking, and then the progress can be saved and carried over to your next playthrough. These options and rewards are what kept me wanting to come back. There are tons of new suits (with new bonuses) to unlock and I always wanted to see what my next pimped-out weapon could do.
My desire to jump back in really speaks to the shift in Isaac’s perspective this time around. Some fans threw hissy fits when Visceral said that there’d be more action in Dead Space 2, but it works and I love it. Isaac feels like a badass here, and he should. He’s fought these monsters before and he’s used these weapons before. The first game was a scared engineer tossed into hell. The second game is a guy who’s lost everything to these monsters and really has nothing left to lose so hell yes he’ll put his life on the line and shoot out an airlock if it means killing seven Necromorphs at once. Isaac is stronger here and I feel stronger playing as him.
If you’re truly devoted like myself, there’s even a mode known as «Hardcore,» and it’s nothing less than sadistic. The enemies are at their toughest, the supplies are limited, there are no checkpoints, and if you die, you restart from your last save. Oh, and you can only save three times in the entire game. That’s crazy talk, but damn, do I want to do it.
Loading
As much fun as all that is, the «go here and do this» structure does hamper the overarching story. The part about Isaac wrestling his demons is awesome, but the narrative driving the search for the Marker is a bit flat in comparison. Different characters are just popping up to tell you to go there and do that. I wouldn’t have a problem with this structure if it ended with Isaac learning something or maturing as a protagonist, but we never get that moment where he takes charge of his own fate. He’s always being pushed somewhere by someone.
Another stumble is multiplayer. I’ve played all of the game’s five modes/maps, and none of them did anything for me. Players are broken into two teams: the humans have an objective and the Necromorphs are out to stop them at all costs. As a human, I’d run to an objective, hold out for as long as I could, and then get killed. As a Necromorph, I’d hope my minimal amount of damage dealt killed a weaken opponent or set the kill up for a friend. The pacing and vague objectives really didn’t equate to fun. This isn’t want I want out of a Dead Space experience.
Luckily, as I hope I’ve already driven home, Dead Space 2’s single-player is so good, you shouldn’t question picking this game up.
Multiplayer failed to thrill me.
Dead Space 2 is more than just an action game and it’s more than a survival horror game — it’s a game that tells a really personal story about a guy who has been seriously scarred by the events around him. That premise alone makes it interesting, but Visceral Games melds it with rewarding combat, shocking enemies, and huge set pieces before tossing it into a world that’s truly creepy and scary. I didn’t find multiplayer that interesting and would’ve liked to have seen Isaac stop being an errand boy, but none of that spoils what you’re getting here. The shocking moments, the gruesome deaths, and the fun of playing through this experience again and again are what I took away from this one.
Dead Space 2 is an excellent game, and it’s well worth your time and money.

Take the multiplayer for what it is — a fun digression from the enthralling action on The Sprawl — and DS2 comfortably sits waiting for the other Game of the Year nominees for 2011.

Dead Space 2 is brilliant — no two ways about it. It’s everything a sequel should be and it’s a fine, poo-your-pants inclusion to anybody’s library. [Issue#201, p.90]

Dead Space 2 is bigger, better but less scary than the first episode of Visceral Games’ horror franchise. This is not a crime, though, because the game is really awesome. The multiplayer is interesting but looks just like a simple extra to the main game.

With this sequel, Visceral Games has masterfully expanded on the first Dead Space. They’ve revved up the series with tougher guns, a bigger setting, and online multiplayer, but kept the spirit and, most importantly, the scares of the original in tact.

Dead Space 2 isn’t bad, it simply isn’t the evolution it should or could have been. By the time the closing credits roll, don’t be surprised if the only dead space you’re feeling is the one in the middle of your chest.

Lots of scary bits, great gameplay, gadgets and weapons to play with, so many ways to fights those terrifying monsters in space, excellent stuff.
And if you enjoyed the story of the first game, this one is much better still and expands well on it, with some interesting characters and a good atmosphere. I simply can’t fault this, it never gets boring and is very addictive. And the trophies are are a great challenge as well, but not impossible. This is definitely one for EA to be proud of. I hope to see another sequel. One of this years best games easily.… Expand

You just walk down hallways and shoot things that run at you, and then wait for the door to open for the next area (and there are a ton of slow-opening doors in this game), then repeat. And despite what you may have heard, this game isn’t challenging. Yes, you will die a lot, but only because it’s so cheap. Most of my deaths were because I didn’t know what was coming at me, or from where, and by the time I figured it out it was too late…. die and restart at checkpoint, and do it again… it’s just trial and error. There is no strategy, no depth, and it’s just the same thing over and over, and it’s not scary in the least. After about 6 chapters of walking, shooting and waiting for doors to open, I turned it off from extreme boredom. This isn’t a game; it’s a ridiculously long tech demo with a story, like most of today’s «video games». Rent it or forget it. … Expand

Dead Space 2 — Gambling
Slightly gray (which, in general, is understandable)
since the first part of Dead Space engineer Isaac Clarke
straightened his shoulders, stretched his neck muscles and, slamming the visor of his protective helmet, made
a step into weightlessness, where, besides him, only Necromorphs can survive —
a parasitic form of life for which the inhospitable space is literally
meaning home.
Seems like an ordinary scene from Dead Space 2 , if not for one circumstance: Isaac spent the previous three years in
straitjacket, suffering from hallucinations and talking with the ghost of the former
girlfriends. With that in mind, the next ten hours of play is the easiest
it would also be to call another hallucination of the hero stretched over time.
At the same time, this would explain the fact that the corridors of the space colony Sprawl are not much
different from the corridors of the Ishimura mining platform, and the darkness and Necromorphs
— they are generally the same everywhere. But even so, this hallucination turned out
many times more interesting and scarier than the boring reality from the first Dead Space.
Off season
No game captures the feeling of weightlessness better than Dead Space 2. It’s a pity that the main action takes place in tight corridors anyway. |
Therefore, it is not so important how you spent October 2008:
played Dead Space or did something more exciting (in the last
In this case, the menu item “Earlier in Dead Space” will come to your aid). But with or without
him Dead Space 2 is a horror, from birth devoid of any metaphysics, and
scolding him for this is like blaming zombies for being addicted to human
brains.
Knowing this, the game compensates for the lack of hidden meanings of good
work with the audiovisual side. Dead Space 2 manages to call in places
a purely physiological aversion to everything that happens on the screen is very
heavy and viscous game, which is in a good way uncomfortable. Percent so
ninety of these sensations are provided by sound — as viscous and pulsating as
and everything else. Suffice it to say that the author of these lines Dead Space 2 hit
for the purchase of expensive headphones, coupled with a tube amplifier — without a similar set
(or, alternatively, good 5. 1 acoustics) half of the sensations will be lost, and
the game will turn into a clumsy corridor shooter about pus, severed limbs and
darkness.
During the first few levels of difference from the original
games have to be looked for literally with a telescope: the same weapon (the first in frequency
use — the good old laser saw), absolutely the same monsters and
situations. Only then do you begin to notice how much work has been done
over all of this. The number of annoying moments is minimized, corridors
filled with a mass of characteristic details that make it possible to distinguish them from one another
(and if you still get confused, a path indicator in the form of a thin blue
lines), added a lot of new locations (uniate church, school with
baby monsters, subway, residential area), and the bosses stopped too often
repetitive, which was a big problem in the first part.
A rare character lives on the screen for more than a couple of minutes — what kind of characters are there? |
One of three new types of Necromorphs that make the game feel a little less like fighting a clone army. |
Cut line
The result was a miracle — a basic concept based
on (to use the official wording) «strategic dismemberment» of monsters
with a constant lack of cartridges, it finally worked as it should. If before,
left without charges for the saw, it was possible to immediately restart the game (survive
without weapons against even one enemy was impossible), now it’s in the order of things
began to tear off a claw from a dead Necromorph using kinesis
(a high-tech analogue of telekinesis) and nail her to the wall a couple more
living bastards. For the same purposes, the metal scattered everywhere serves
armature, which can also be lifted and launched into a slowly creeping slimy
goal.
The ghosts of former girlfriends are like this, not like in the movies. |
In addition, the game situations themselves have become much more interesting.
The script no longer consists of only the phrases «Isaac fights a monster» and
«Isaac meets a mad scientist.» At every level there is a moment when
the game turns on Hollywood and dilutes the slow horror with some adrenaline
attraction. At one of these moments, Isaac decides to catch up on jet
boosters (now built into the suit) subway car flying into the tunnel,
from which doors and other debris come off from time to time (the whole scene is quite
itself interactive).
In general, with the advent of jet engines, flights to
weightlessness have become full-fledged flights, and not just jumps from point A to
point B. Yes, and there are much more such moments, as a result of which
the notorious dark corridors (that inevitably follow them) just don’t
get pretty bored.

Dead Space 2 — a classic sequel made in the walls of a large
corporations: they cut off all the excess chips from it and greased all the creaking
gears. The task is completed, the game collects excellent press around the world and
even incites someone to buy expensive acoustics. But EA’s attempts to create
the basis of all this is their own game universe (spin-offs for Wii, comics,
animated film) are doomed to failure so far: to reach this level
something more is needed, namely, a truly authorial approach with good
script and characters. So far, Dead Space 2 is the equivalent of a commercial
successful generalization, «Toyota Corolla» from the world of horror. Now — a hit, and through
year is an obsolete model.

Dead Space 2 review, page 3
Western-flavored horror is the kind of slasher where the atmosphere always gives in to entertainment. Surprisingly, even such a product always has a crowd of admirers who are sure to buy a bunch of boxes with the newly-minted «superfood», thereby sponsoring its continuation. Otherwise, the appearance of Dead Space 2 cannot be explained. Electronic Arts , like any other billionaire corporation, rarely decides on risky experiments, getting rid of its devoted «fans» (and there have been fewer and fewer of them over the years) with fresh releases of Need for Speed , FIFA and — what else is popular and loved by the public? — possibly NBA .
However, one cannot last long on the «glory of Herostratus», and in EA they understood this very well when they signed a whole scattering of contracts for the maintenance and promotion « New Generation IP «. This is how Mirror’s Edge , and Dante’s Inferno , and, finally, Dead Space — Survival Horror , partially copying the handwriting of Mikami and generously diluting it with pennies, were born of the twentieth century, which mostly belong to Alfred Hitchcock’s violent little head . These findings cannot be explained on the fingers — it is easier to use concrete examples; fortunately, those are both in the original and in the sequel « Dead Space «there is plenty.
Darkness — you can’t see anything without a flashlight, and suddenly someone attacks from behind in this booth. The hero endures all hardships with stoic calmness (until the cut-scene starts), and here the person on the other side of the blue screen from the character shudders every now and then from the successfully applied audio-visual insolation, which puts pressure on the nerves and at the same time captivates with the quality of performance.0101 dark Sci-Fi «, then to the usual templates Survival Horror — and therefore even more beloved by a large army of fans.
Dead Space 2 turned out to be an additive used components, consisting mainly of two planes: from the action and Survival — inserts. Each of them — and this is important — as in the original, rarely intersects with the next one, leaving the player the right to turn on the imagination. Only the budget has risen incrementally, and the increased number of zeros in the employment contract has affected the content, not innovation, as that must have been wanted by especially acrimonious critics. Dead Space 2 is not worth looking for » wow «- he simply isn’t here. But there is meat, a sea of hypertrophied tentacles and — tra-ta-ta — the talking main character.
The upgrade system has not undergone major changes. experience, can be used for any of the purchased barrels, as well as for stasis and a suit. They can be picked up at levels (here — chapters) or purchased in stationary stores. There is only one significant difference: if desired, blocks from weapons can be removed and used for others , previously unmodernized or slightly modernized guns.0102
After the mental trauma suffered aboard the spaceship « Ishimura «, Isaac did not really change, rather, on the contrary, he matured and probably figured out that to pretend to be Gordon Freeman , despite the similarity of professions , is not necessary at all, and often even harmful. Because of the miraculously opened gift of speech, the character, previously presented as a funny doll on the occasion of big cones, is perceived quite differently — a sort of infernal wanderer, moving from one circle of hell to another. First — « Ishimura «, the second is a colony that was suddenly attacked by the same infection.
The game begins with a scene of devastation preceded by interrogation. It turns out that during the time that Clark spent in the bosom of civilization, his efforts were «a new obelisk (a kind of collective mind for necromorphs), and the bacchanalia going on around — partly belonging to the church of «unitology», partly to himself — is a natural retribution for the inability to grasp the immensity: to use other people’s technologies for the benefit of mankind.
A handy map from the first part in Dead Space 2 has disappeared. Its functions are now performed by the «GPS-navigator» built into Isaac’s suit, which previously marked only the route along which the main character was supposed to move. In order to easily find, say, a store, you need to hold down the analog shift and select the desired item in the menu that opens. Whether it’s the already mentioned store or a save point.
However, all this is poetry: the list of gameplay changes and corrections that the sequel has undergone looks much more interesting. With this, oddly enough, everything is more than in order. A small facelift to smooth out wrinkles — as far as the engine is concerned. More dynamics and imaginary variety — with regard to the gameplay. Actually, in 2008, the specialized press imputed Dead Space doesn’t have too many shortcomings: to a greater extent, its monotony and a slightly awkward control scheme, referring to Resident Evil 4 (the fifth part did not yet exist).
With control, we will inform you right away, from now on everything « OK «: Isaac has become faster, and the accuracy of pointing has increased. But the monotony remains. Visceral Games , of course, tried very hard to make amends for this shameful blunder by introducing a decent number of filleting personalities, but, alas, the intimacy has not gone anywhere — it has not hidden under the bench, as required, I apologize for the grandiloquence, the breath of time. All the action, as before, is conditionally divided into two types of «ingredients»: «cut them all and indiscriminately» and «if we don’t play a thriller.» They sometimes alternate, but they do it so rarely and so reluctantly that it’s just right to gouge a new rock parable into the town — it’s so bitter (with a degree of expectation!).
Take, for example, the promoted scene on the train: it is interactive, no doubt, and there are also many opponents that climb from all windows, but this scene is a drop in the ocean of endless corridors with similar architecture, which can be distinguished maybe just a trained eye. Yeah, here’s a children’s bestiary with bomb kids going berserk. Yeah — still malleable vision captures details — and here is « Ishimura » — it has not changed at all, and even glitches, oh, that is, memories, occur exactly in the same places where Isaac was attacked by giant tentacles of either a mutated octopus, or whoever else. And here is space; you need to activate an additional power generator, perform the direct duties of an engineer, albeit a former one, and even a half-crazy one. A little earlier — a scene with abundant visions. The character tries to pierce his own eye. Later, by the way, there will be another allusion to one of the films with the participation of Arnold «I love my biceps» Schwarzenegger .
Here is a part of the suspense picture and gathered. The other half is audio effects. They are, to be honest, simply magnificent and work on the atmosphere even better than all these trains and space put together. Perhaps it is Dead Space 2 that will justify the price of your audio system: a good receiver and multi-channel acoustics.
Electronic Arts has always been famous for high-quality and complete localizations of its popular products. That was the case until recently. Dead Space 2 in Russia was released without official dubbing. All textual information and all the replicas of the characters have been translated, but no more. Unfortunately, the text itself is full of small blunders: for example, sometimes lowercase letters are replaced by capital letters in the MIDDLE of a SENTENCE. The rest of the adaptation came out of acceptable quality.
Each appearance of monsters is a real feast for the ears, and each replica is for an aesthete who loves « Sci-Fi » with all his heart. And now I don’t care about the weak connection between the episodes — now I just want to go forward, and there — even more action, and in some places there are even the beginnings of «stealth». From the very beginning, is chasing Isaac like a pack of wolves, a local variant of the special forces. Closer to the final, all this leads to an open confrontation, in which, of course, all possible and impossible hands are not on the side of Clark . Having caught the eye of a handful of soldiers, you can not even count on a positive outcome: the engineer will simply be shot on the spot. Therefore, you have to hide, look for ways around.
