Latest version: 1.6.0

Version 1.6.0 supports Dark Souls: Remastered version 1.03.1 (November 2022). There are no changes to the PTDE version.

Update list for 1.5.2:

  • Incorrect file in PTDE installation has been fixed (PTDE only).
  • (No updates to the DSR version, but the version number has been made consistent anyway.)

Update list for 1.5.1:

  • Crashes in Undead Burg and Darkroot Basin are fixed (DSR only).
  • Ransacker Rune loot table has been fixed (more item variety).

Update list for 1.5.0:

  • PTDE and DSR versions of the mod now use the same installer.
  • New boss music tracks now respect your volume settings and alt-tabbing.
  • Horned Scourge hitboxes have been fixed.
  • Seath’s questline has been tweaked. You must show him a certain weapon rather than just have it.

  • Eingyi sells Egg Vermifuge, Poison Mist, and Toxic Mist.
  • The ladder in upper Blighttown will hopefully not clip you through the floor as often.
  • Gwynevere’s Ring can be traded to Snuggly for Tranquil Walk of Peace.
  • Undead Rapport has been improved.
  • Omphalic Rune has been fixed. (It gives you a buff when you respawn after killing multiple enemies.)
  • Enemies with non-functional AI have been fixed (in DSR).
  • Issues talking to Andre and Laurentius have hopefully been fixed (in DSR).
  • Numerous other minor/rare bugs and text typos have been fixed.

Thank you also to everyone who sent me nice messages and constructive feedback. This was the first video game project I ever released,
and I’m grateful to those who were patient with me as I ironed out all the bugs and found better ways to explain what it was really about.

Dark Souls: Daughters of Ash is an enormous fan-made overhaul of Dark Souls. Its main goal is to recapture the feeling of playing Dark Souls for the first time by both adding new story events (without creating new game assets) and remixing existing content. To this end, I won’t spoil much, but expect to encounter:

  • New game progression
    • Your route through Lordran may not be the same. New world-changing events, key items, and unexpected pathways await you.
  • New bosses and enemies
    • Triumph in new and modified boss battles, most of which are designed to provide novel challenges rather than simple harder ones.
    • Encounter new enemies on your journey – including enemies restored from cut content – and watch many old enemies behave in new ways.
    • New NPCs and storylines
      • Meet new characters with brand new questlines, whose paths will intersect in numerous unpredictable ways as your journey continues.
      • The stories of familiar characters may also take unexpected turns.
      • New weapons, items, and mechanics
        • Discover new weapons with brand new abilities, some of which may require keen insights to master.
        • Most existing equipment will not be exactly the way you remember.
        • Add interesting challenges to your play-through from the very beginning of the game using a certain starting gift.
        • Expanded lore
          • Learn more about Lordran’s past from new item descriptions and gameplay events.
          • (NOTE: I’ve tried to craft all new lore content so that it builds upon the lore of the original game, rather than directly conflict with it.)
          • New secrets
            • Don’t expect to unveil all of the game’s hidden content by yourself in one play-through.
            • Daughters of Ash has more overall content than the original game and is much more complex, with more dynamic story events and branching paths to take throughout the game. It contains no new game assets (e.g. character models, map assets, dialogue recordings, visual effects) but expands and refreshes the experience by modifying the game’s event scripts, placement data, and entity logic. It was created with more than one thousand hours of work throughout 2017 and 2018 by one very masochistic programmer with the wonderful tools and loving support of the Dark Souls modding community. See the screenshots for examples of sights you might encounter in the first ten minutes.

              The full change log for past updates can now be found in the readme included in the patch zip (theoretically; bear with me as I eventually migrate the full history of changes into it). Only major changes are listed below.

              This version of the mod is for Dark Souls: Remastered only. The Prepare to Die Edition version has almost identical content, but requires different mod files.

              Step 1: Ensure you have the latest version of Dark Souls: Remastered on Steam.

              • I make no effort to support illegal copies of the game, and you may encounter serious issues if you attempt to use such a copy.

              Step 2: Go offline on Steam.

              • Unlike the original version of Dark Souls, large online mods are basically completely off-limits in Dark Souls: Remastered.
              • I take no responsibility for what happens when you take this mod online. You have been warned!

              Step 3: Download the mod and run InstallDSDoA.exe.

              • The installer is required to edit the game engine itself, as legal issues prevent me from directly uploading a modified version of the game executable.
              • Do NOT just copy the data folder into your game directory. The installer will copy these files for you after making a backup.

              Step 4: If there is a patch available with a higher version, download it and extract the DSR subfolder into the game directory.

              • You don’t need to download a patch that has the same version number as the installer you used. These same-numbered patches are offered so people with the previous installer version can download a small file rather than re-downloading all the data files (most of which won’t change).

              • HotPocketRemix for UDSFM, his EMEVD work, and his FSB work.
              • Meowmaritus for ParamVessel, MeowScript, and Model Viewer.
              • wulf2k for BND Rebuilder, MSB Editor, FMG Editor, and Param Editor.
              • loosepolygon for DarkSoulsAnimTool and ScriptListEdit.
              • TKGP for Yabber.
              • FTRichter for a couple of ideas and his general comraderie.

              Special thanks to AinTunez for helping with the conversion to Dark Souls Remastered.

              NOTE: As of version 1.5.0, both Nexus download links work for both versions of the game.

              Dark Souls: Daughters of Ash is definitely the most well-known project I’ve ever released. It’s a big mod for Dark Souls that remixes a lot of the game’s content, and adds a significant amount, in the hope of recapturing that feeling of playing Dark Souls for the first time. I most recently updated the mod in July 2020 (version 1.5.2), which is intended to be the final release. You can find articles about it online and read an interview I did with Steven Wright at Eurogamer.

              DoA had a release (on 2 January 2019) that was both a little rough and surprisingly smooth. It was rough in the sense that even after months of solo playtesting, I had no chance of finding all the bugs that thousands of players reported in the first few days. I was releasing daily patches for a good two weeks; gradually, the dents were buffed out, and I was able to focus on porting it to the Remastered edition of the game in May 2019. I didn’t help myself by making mistakes in my original description of the mod, foolishly throwing out numbers where none were needed and implying that the game was now doubled in size. (My only defense is that I was exhausted and rushing to release the mod “by the end of 2018,” which turned out to be the second day of 2019.) I also shouldn’t have described it as “what Dark Souls would look like if FromSoft had six more months of development.” This was partially true: I restored as much cut or unfinished content as I could and even added a “castle invasion” story event that coincidentally reappeared in Sekiro shortly after. But for large chunks of the mod, the primary goal was novelty, which necessarily involved tampering with FromSoft’s already-perfect design choices. One day, I’ll write more about these conflicting design goals in overhaul mods. Let it just be said for now that I took player feedback very seriously on both the design front and the “marketing” front, and appreciate that I had the chance to learn some important lessons without money complicating the picture.

              Despite the early bumps, things ultimately went very well. LobosJr, who I’d used as a mental surrogate for The Player throughout most of the mod’s development, started streaming it almost the instant it was released and ended up playing it for a whole week. For days, I was literally patching the mod on one monitor while watching him play on the other, but miraculously there were never any bugs that threatened to ruin the experience. The response on his stream and elsewhere was very positive; it’s also been fantastic watching people hang out together to discuss the mod and help newbies on the DoA subreddit and the Discord server. And I’ll never forget those who reached out with words of thanks and donations. All of you are the reason I will continue designing games.

              The design and execution of DoA was a solo endeavor, but one that would not have been possible without the tools and advice of many Dark Souls modders. First among them are Wulf2k, whose simple graphical tools for editing map data, game parameters, and text entries were the workhorses of the project, and HotPocketRemix, whose event-modding breakthrough in 2017 set fire to the entire thing. The possibilities for DoA started flying in my mind while watching his EMEVD tutorials on YouTube; before that, I had zero modding experience and no idea I wanted to design games. I also used tools developed by AinTunez, Meowmaritus, loosepolygon, and TKGP. AinTunez further helped with the Remastered port. You can find all of these friendly folks on the FromSoft modding Discord, ?ServerName?.

              Dark Souls is an interesting and challenging game, for which it is recommended that you read the guide to avoid dead ends and enjoy the process to the fullest. nine0003

              About the game

              In 2011, Japanese developers From Software released a computer game called Dark Souls. This open-world game was available only on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and already in 2012, players were able to enjoy their favorite gift on Microsoft Windows. However, due to terrible technical problems, it was re-released for PC in 2018 under the name Dark Souls: Remastered.

              The game takes place in the Kingdom of Lordran, which is more like Europe in the Middle Ages. All the inhabitants of the kingdom are cursed — they turn into undead. The main character is the same living dead, and his goal is to restore order. The player explores the world, fights bosses and finds various items. Dark Souls has a detailed combat system and perfectly built world levels. nine0003

              The difference between Dark Souls and Dark Souls: Remastered

              What is the difference between Dark Souls 1 and Remastered? There are no global differences in the remake of the game, but only competent optimization of graphics and multiplayer.

              Here are the main improvements that made her more attractive:

              • In the inventory, you can select the number of items you want to use.
              • It is possible to switch covenants (fractions) at campfires.
              • A bonfire has appeared in the catacombs near the blacksmith Vamos. nine0012
              • Items that are picked up by the player are no longer automatically assigned to slots.
              • Clamp up or down on the D-pad allows you to pick up the first equipped item.
              • The layout of the buttons on the controller itself can be customized.
              • New languages added.

              Please note! Three-on-three and one-on-one battles have been added to the game’s arena. The maximum allowed number of players has increased to 6 (in the first version — four). In PvP mode, of all the healing items, only the flask with estus is available. nine0003

              Dark Souls: Remastered time

              The game has both an open world and a logical ending. Considering the average, Dark Souls: Remastered has a playtime of 25 hours and 20 minutes. However, not everyone is so fast and diligent. There are people who like to play to the fullest, using all the expansions, unlocking all the areas and items.

              For those who want to go through not only the main story, but also expansions, the passage of Dark Souls 1 will be about 44 hours and 55 minutes. nine0003

              At a leisurely pace, the game can last more than 106 hours. It all depends entirely on the player.

              Dark Souls walkthrough, all locations in order

              The game itself is quite complex, so it is advisable to get to know the world better so as not to get confused. Below is brief and precise information about the main areas of the game and some of the necessary actions. The order of locations may vary, as some locations have a choice between two areas. And yet, what is the passage in Dark Souls? nine0003

              Northern Undead Sanctuary and Temple of Fire

              The game’s opening location is the Northern Undead Sanctuary. After the player has chosen a character, appearance and gift, he finds himself in the refuge of the Undead. Here is the complete list of character classes:

              • knight;
              • warrior;
              • wanderer;
              • thief;
              • magician;
              • bandit;
              • hunter;
              • pyromancer;
              • cleric;
              • beggar.

              First, the chosen hero opens the door with the key and runs up the stairs. When he sees the boss, he does not attack, but runs through the open door to collect loot and prepare for the fight.

              Important! Bonfire serves as a kind of checkpoint in Dark, so don’t forget to save from time to time.

              In the Temple of Fire, the knight and merchant Anastasia will be waiting for the hero, who will guide him on the right path. Here you need to take a sword and shield and head to a new location — the Undead City. nine0003

              Undead City

              There are a lot of enemies in the City, so you can farm some experience. The character must definitely buy a bow from the vendor under the barrels, as it will come in handy in the future.

              The character needs to climb the tower, where he will have to fight the boss — Taurus Demon. After that, the player will have to fight the dragon to get the sword that is on his tail.

              Important! This uses a bow purchased earlier. The dragon sword will drop only when there are more than 30 hits on the tail. nine0003

              A dragon worth 10,000 souls can be slain, but is optional. The main thing is to take the weapon.

              Undead District

              The next step is to fight the Fanged Boar mini-boss and the undead. The central boss of this location is the Gargoyle. You can also get a weapon from it — Tail-Axe. The main task is to ring the bell on top of the tower. All this is done with care, because the towers are often guarded by archers. In this zone, the player buys the key of Artorias and proceeds further. nine0003

              Root Garden

              Dark Root Garden is a forest where the Titanite Demon lives. It is also not necessary to kill him, so the player moves towards the glowing gate.

              Secret! There is a spinning tree here. If you hit it, a secret passage will open, where the Wolf Ring lies.

              Depths

              This is not the most pleasant location, there are a lot of undead and dogs. The hero needs to save the pyromancer Lawrence from the Great Swamp, who is behind the barrels. It is recommended to be careful and beware of the slugs that hang from above, because they do a lot of damage. nine0003

              Behind the waterfall there is a merchant, Domhnall of Xena, but his weapons cannot be repaired, so buying anything from him is useless.

              Plague City

              The hero enters the City either from the Temple of Fire or from the Depths. He will be met by many trolls and a ghoul. The player must reach the bonfire and save. Near the fire is a mountain with a boss.

              Half-maiden, half-spider, Chaos Witch Queeleg is a tough character, so you’ll have to call on a dark phantom to help her. Then you need to ring the bell a second time. nine0003

              The Hollow

              The road to the Hollow comes from Plague City only. Once here, the player will find the Ring of Cloranty near the corpse, it will help with the restoration of stamina. On the way, he will again meet a dragon with a Great Sword on its tail. When the hero talks to him and joins the faction, he will be able to make himself a dragon head and breathe fire. A very useful thing!

              Catacombs

              The road from the Fire Temple leads to the catacombs. While exploring the graveyard, the player will find a Winged Spear, Binoculars, and a Two-Handed Sword. Skeletons are everywhere, but just killing them is a waste of time. You need to destroy the necromancers who resurrect the dead. nine0003

              Crypt of the Giants

              One of the darkest locations. Follow the small lights, and they will lead to a person who will push the protagonist into the pit.

              The goal is to save Rhea from Thorolund and kill the man who dared to push the hero. The boss here, Nito Gravelord, looks like a huge skeleton with smaller skeletons around. After defeating the enemy, the Paladin Set will appear.

              Demon Ruins

              This is hell! There is a lot of lava and fire around, as well as a lot of bosses. The first is the Indefatigable Warrior. It will only start attacking when the player takes the Daughter of Chaos Set. nine0003

              The next are Wise Fire Demon and Demon Hundredlegs. After killing the Demon Hundredfoot, an Orange Ring will drop, which makes it possible to run on lava.

              Forgotten Izalith

              After receiving the Orange Ring, the entrance to the Forgotten Izalith is opened to the player, since there is only lava under their feet. You will have to face the demonic statues, Kirk, as well as the Beetle, the Eater and the Daughter of Chaos.

              Crucible of the First Flame

              Finally, the very last Dark Souls location. To open this area, it is enough to erect a Great Chalice and donate Great Souls there. The final boss is Gwyn Lord of Cinder. However, if the player wants to get all the trophies, do not rush to kill Gwyn, because the game will start over. nine0003

              After defeating the main enemy, there is a choice:

              1. Light a fire and give light to the world.
              2. Put out the fire and become the Lord of Darkness.

              Interesting! Only 6.2% of players managed to complete all game achievements and get FromSoftware platinum.

              Dark Souls add-ons

              Only one add-on was released for the first part of the game, called Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition. The release date is August 24, 2012. The add-on introduces another branch of events into the plot, it includes new locations and objects. Other interesting characters appear and the PvP arena opens up.
