Dark Souls 3 has received an FPS boost update on the Xbox Series X and S to raise the game to 60FPS.

Just yesterday on July 7, it was revealed that Dark Souls 3 would be getting an update on the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S versions. This update, as Xbox revealed, would boost the game’s frame rate up to 60FPS, making it the next in a long line of games to have received an FPS boost performance patch on Xbox’s next-gen consoles.

Shortly after the new patch was revealed, Digital Foundry debuted new details of the patch. The outlet reveals that while the Xbox One version of Dark Souls 3 was originally capped to a frame rate of 30FPS, the new update for the Xbox Series X and S versions of the game remove that cap, boosting the game up to a pretty consistent 60FPS.

However, Digital Foundry discovered that the new version of Dark Souls 3 is unfortunately still capped to a resolution output of 900p. This is a little strange, because both the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S would both easily be able to handle a resolution upgrade for the game and output at potentially 4K, especially in the case of the former console.

This means, as Digital Foundry note, that the PS5 is actually still the best place to play Dark Souls 3. This is due to the fact that the game runs at 60FPS and 1080p through the backwards compatibility function of PlayStation’s next-gen console, and never needed an update to remove a frame rate cap. Since the PS5 renders at 1080p instead of 900p, it’s effectively the superior platform to experience FromSoftware’s game.

Nonetheless, this new patch means it’s the perfect time to revisit FromSoftware’s sequel. There’s plenty of time before Elden Ring, FromSoftware’s forthcoming RPG collaboration with Game of Thrones author George R. R. Martin, launches next year in January 2021, so the next few months are the perfect time to revisit FromSoftware’s incredible back catalogue before their next venture releases.

PS5 Can Run Sekiro, Dark Souls 3 at 60 FPS

By

As reviewers reveal more info about the upcoming next generation hardware, it seems Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro are taking full advantage.

Next week will see the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series consoles launching across the world. With the launch so close, reviewers have finally been able to provide information regarding the new features for the hardware. One of the points most fans want to know about is the backwards compatibility on the next-gen consoles and how the impressive tech will improve older titles.

As reviewers have started to put numerous games through the stress test, new information is coming out about which titles will get a significant boost. With the PlayStation 5 having 99 percent backwards compatibility according to Sony, it means there are a lot of games that require examination. At least for FromSoftware fans, at least two of the developer’s titles will get a boost on the PlayStation 5.

According to early reviews, both 2016’s Dark Souls 3 and 2019’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice will run at 60 frames per second on the PlayStation 5. This comes as welcomed news for FromSoftware fans who can return to both titles with what will feel like an entirely new way to play. Reports also indicate that both Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro will have reduced load times although no specific time frames have been provided by critics.

While PlayStation fans will be happy to hear about Dark Souls 3‘s improvements, Xbox Series players have been hit with bad news. Since embargos are up for both machines, reviewers have been able to compare just how well backwards compatibility is handled on both Sony’s and Microsoft’s hardware. While the third entry in the Dark Souls series will hit the desired 60fps on the PlayStation 5, it seems Dark Souls 3 will be limited to 30fps on Xbox Series X. There are likely more tests to be done to properly compare just how well each actually run, but early signs point to PlayStation 5 players getting the better Dark Souls 3 experience.

With fans happy to hear that two of FromSoftware’s most recent titles are utilizing the PlayStation 5 hardware, the news coincides with a downer for others. Alongside confirmation about how Sekiro and Dark Souls 3 will perform on Sony’s new hardware, some reviewers confirm that PlayStation 4 exclusive Bloodborne will be limited to 30fps on PS5. This is a considerable blow to fans who were hoping to finally play the game with a better performance. The excitement was so high that fans even made videos predicating how Bloodborne would run on PlayStation 5 with 60fps being the most desired feature. With both Sekiro and Darks Souls 3 able to handle 60fps, fans are speculating why Bloodborne won’t.

While the new improvements to Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro are welcomed, most fans of the macro «Souls» genre will have their hands full come launch day. The Demon’s Souls remake launches alongside the PlayStation 5 next week finally bringing back a title many thought trapped on the PlayStation 3. Hopefully the difficulty won’t lead to brand new DualSenses getting durability tests.

Dark Souls 3 is available now for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.

90,000 Dark Souls 3 ran at 60fps on Xbox Series X|S. But it’s better to play on PS5

Game from Japanese studio From Software received support for FPS Boost technology on the consoles of the current generation of Microsoft

The official Xbox Twitter account is offering to celebrate the sun as Dark Souls 3 on Xbox Series X|S finally supports FPS Boost technology, allowing a 2016 game to run at 60fps on ultra-performing 2020 hardware.

As noted by Digital Foundry techies, the Xbox versions had a 30fps limit, which then migrated to newer gaming systems. Remarkably, From Software once released an update for PlayStation consoles, which removed all restrictions and allowed the game to run at 60 frames per second on PS4 Pro, but did not bother with the Xbox One X version, which adopted all the DS3 sores on Xbox One not capable of better resolution than 900p.

FPS Boost on the new Microsoft consoles only increases the frame rate, leaving the ill-fated 900p. The game runs at 1080p on PlayStation consoles.

Thus, even with all the updates, Dark Souls 3 on Xbox Series X|S is inferior to the PlayStation version, which on PS5 not only runs at 1080p, but also keeps stable 60 fps.

In February of this year, Microsoft Corporation introduced a new feature FPS Boost for Xbox Series X|S consoles, which increases the frame rate of games in backwards compatible games to 60 or 120 FPS . Among the first releases with the ability to activate FPS Boost were Far Cry 4 , Watch Dogs 2 and UFC 4 , and today Dark Souls III has joined the list. It now runs at 60 FPS on both new generation systems . According to experts from Digital Foundry is almost perfect.

As Jason Ronald of Microsoft told , the Xbox team has developed a new special technology to implement a fan-requested feature in Dark Souls III.

«We heard you! Extremely excited to bring FPS Boost support to Dark Souls III. To achieve 60 FPS, we had to use a completely new technology that is unique to this game. A huge thanks to our partners from FromSoftware and Bandai Namco,» wrote Ronald.

Digital Foundry has already studied the game with FPS Boost and found that it performs equally well at 60 FPS on both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S .
