How To Complete Irina and Eygon’s Questline

By
Aden Carter

The Irina and Eygon’s questline in Dark Souls 3 can be a tough one to complete. This guide should help players along throughout the quest.

Eygon is a pretty recognizable character from Dark Souls 3. There is a bond between him and Irina. From first meeting Eygon, he will greet players by telling them he is «allied to you as long as you assure the girl’s safety.» He and Irina share a questline that revolves around turning Irina into a Fire Keeper.

By the end, players will be able to treat Irina as the Fire Keep of Firelink Shrine and even use her to level up. Irina’s quest has two paths that can be taken, dark and light. Both involve purchasing her miracles.

Rescue The Maiden

The quest begins when players rescue Irina from her cell. Players will first notice Eygon sitting on a rock by a locked cell door on their way out of the Undead Settlement. There are two ways down. Players can either purchase the Grave Key from the Shrine Handmaiden and open the door in the sewers by the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire. This path will take players through the sewers and past a few skeletons.

The other way down is to jump off the cliff behind Eygon. This will cause a fair amount of damage to the player, but it is quicker. Once down there, head through the small opening to a room with rats. Defeat the rats and climb the ladder to get to Irina’s cell. Irina will ask players to touch her face. After doing so, she will teleport to Firelink Shrine.

Dark Path: Purchase Dark Miracles

Whether or not a player takes the good or dark path in Irina’s questline will depend on if they purchased any dark miracles from her. Players who want to do her dark questline will need to find the different tomes and start by purchasing a dark miracle from her.

After purchasing one of the dark miracles and reloading the area, Irina will be gone. Eygon will take her and they can be found just past the Iudex Gundyr bonfire at the bottom of the hill from Firelink Shrine. Eygon will be hostile toward the player and try to kill them. After killing Eygon, talk to Irina and she will return to Firelink Shrine.

Important Notes About Dark Quest

There are a few things players should know about the dark side of Irina’s questline. If a player purchases all of the dark miracles from Irina, she will no longer sell the player miracles and will only talk to them. If a player only purchased a few of the dark miracles from Irina, they will still be able to access her inventory and purchase more items from her.

Dark Path: Talk To Irina

To finish the dark side of Irina’s questline, the player will need to talk to her one last time. After defeating Eygon, players will have received Morne’s Gauntlets. Equip these gauntlets and talk to Irina. She will ask the player to touch her.

Touching her with Morne’s Gauntlets will initiate dialogue where she asks the player to kill her like Eygon promised to do if she fell to darkness. Kill her to receive her ashes and give them to the Shrine Handmaiden. Players will be able to purchase miracles from the Handmaiden now.

Light Path: Irina Becomes A Fire Keeper

If players forgo purchasing any dark miracles from Irina and instead purchase all of her regular miracles, Irina will become a Fire Keeper. She will move to the tower of Firelink Shrine where the Sword Master was located. Players will be able to use Irina to level up as well as the normal Fire Keeper. The two tomes with dark miracles in them will be sitting on the ground in front of Irina. Players can give them to Karla if they still wish to learn dark miracles.

10 Facts You Didn’t Know About Irina Of Carim

There are loads of interesting and enigmatic characters you can come across in Dark Souls 3. Whether it’s a noble knight keeping a promise to an old friend or a mischievous merchant who enjoys trapping people greedy for treasure, each character requires some deep dives into the lore to get their whole story.

RELATED: Dark Souls 3: 10 Things To Do After You Beat The Game

Irina of Carim is a character the player first comes across locked in a cell guarded by Eygon of Carim. She’s a blind nun and the main Miracle merchant but there’s a lot more to her than there seems. Let’s take a look at some facts about her you might not have known about her.

10/10 Meaning Of Her Name

Starting off this list of Irina facts is something you never would have known unless you were an etymologist or went through the trouble of researching it: the meaning of her name.

Irina is an Eastern-European variant of a Greek name that translates to Eirene, which is derived from a word meaning «peace» and was also the name of a Greek goddess that personified peace. It was also the name of some early Christian saints and the whole motif of peace fits perfectly with Irina’s goal.

9/10 Familiar Voice

FromSoftware have occasionally used the same voice actors across several of their titles. It’s a cool way to keep the voice actors employed and it’s such a treat whenever we recognize a voice from one of the previous games.

If you’re a fan of the Soulsborne franchise and thought that Irina’s voice sounded familiar, you’re not wrong. Irina of Carim is voiced by Sarah Beck Mather, who previously appeared in Dark Souls 2 voicing Lucatiel of Mirrah, a fan-favorite character.

8/10 Can Become A Firekeeper

The whole reason that Irina traveled to Lothric in the first place was so that she can become a Fire Keeper, but going by hers and Eygon’s dialogue when you first encounter them, it’s easy to assume that she’s a lost cause. That’s not the case, however, as you can indeed make her a Fire Keeper, but it is a bit costly.

You can make Irina a Fire Keeper by giving her the Braille Divine Tomes hidden across Lothric and buying up all of her Miracles except any Dark Miracles. It costs a fair number of souls, but she’ll become a Fire Keeper and will even be able to level you up.

7/10 The Feeling Of Darkness

When you first encounter Irina locked in her cell in the Undead Settlement, she asks the player to touch her so she knows she’s not alone. She does this because she says that darkness surrounds her and nibbles at her flesh like insects.

Irina’s description of darkness nearly matches the description of Fire Keeper’s Soul in Dark Souls 1, which describes a Fire Keeper’s soul as containing swarms of humanity that writhe and squirm. Irina’s description can be read as a subtle hint that she’s becoming a Fire Keeper.

6/10 Buying Dark Miracles

Buying up all the Miracles that Irina offers except the Dark Miracles will eventually make her a Fire Keeper, but what happens if you do buy a Dark Miracle from her? The long and short of it is that you’d be setting her down the dark path of her questline where she succumbs to the darkness.

RELATED: 10 Facts You Didn’t Know About Greirat In Dark Souls 3

You can easily tell which ones are the Dark Materials but if not, they’re the ones that come with the Londor and Deep Braille Divine Tomes. If you don’t want to send Irina on a dark path, you could also give those tomes to Karla and buy Dark Miracles from her.

5/10 Free Tower Key

Just outside of Firelink Shrine is a dilapidated tower that gives you access to a number of goodies. The only problem is the tower is locked and the key costs 20,000 souls. The souls are easy to obtain later in the game but if you want the goodies early on, you’ll have an annoying grind ahead of you.

There is an alternative method that will score you the Tower Key for free, and that is to simply kill Irina. We wouldn’t recommend it because you won’t be able to complete her questline but the option is there if you really want the key.

4/10 Maiden Astraea Homage

The duo of Irina and Eygon is a tragic one, especially when you take a deep dive into the lore, but what you might not know is that she bears a striking resemblance to a boss way back in 2009’s Demon’s Souls: Maiden Astraea.

Both Irina and Maiden Astraea are dressed in nearly identical white healer’s robes and both are protected by a heavily armored knight armed with a giant hammer. While their backstories differ greatly, they’re both outcasts because of the darkness within them.

3/10 Eygon’s Promise

From how Eygon talks about her, you get the distinct impression that he hates Irina but still he travels with her and protects her, going so far as attacking you if you so much as buy a Dark Miracle from her. He’s sworn an oath to protect her but there’s something more sinister if you dig deeper.

After going down the dark path of Irina’s questline and killing Eygon, if you touch her while wearing Morne’s Gauntlet, she’ll think you’re Eygon and she’ll ask you to kill her as he promised. Players have interpreted this as Eygon promising to kill her if she fell to darkness.

2/10 Why She’s Locked Up

Have you ever wondered why Irina is locked in a cell when you first encounter her, especially with the fact that she’s trying to be a Fire Keeper and supposed to be one of the «good ones»?

The answer can be gained through small hints and speculation, but it ties into the previous entry. Irina was locked in the cell by her protector Eygon, to protect her from the darkness. Going through the trouble of imprisoning her still seems like a bit much, but as you’ll see from the next entry, it was to protect her from herself.

1/10 Her Life In Carim

Eygon locks Irina up in a cell to protect her from the darkness, but when you first speak to her, she’s already been affected by the darkness. Players have speculated that Eygon locked her up not to protect her from darkness, but to stop her from corrupting herself with darkness.

If you read the description of Irina’s Ashes, you learn that Irina was a frail woman, and that frailty led her to becoming a saint of Carim, her homeland, but it also lead to her grand treachery. It’s never directly stated, but you can piece together that Irina may have abandoned her duties as a saint and willingly sought out darkness, with Eygon being tasked with making her a Fire Keeper to cleanse her.

Irina is in the Undead Settlement and imprisoned in a dungeon located in the sewers. From the Dilapidated Bridge bonfire, go down into the sewer and not far from the big rat you will see a locked door that is unlocked by a grave key, but to get it you will need to run a little.

In the abandoned church where Aegon of Carim sits, go up to the top and talk to the archer giant. He will agree to help you by giving you a young white branch. If you have this branch, he will not shoot at you in the graveyard. If the elevator always takes you down in an abandoned church, first take it up, activate the button and quickly jump off it. In this case, the elevator will go down, and another elevator will come from above, on which you can go up.

Return to the dilapidated bridge bonfire and go to the graveyard. Wait for the giant archer to kill all opponents. After that, search the cemetery and find the undertaker’s ashes among the tombstones on the left side of it.

Return to Firelink Shrine and give the Undertaker’s Ashes to the Handmaid at the Shrine. After that, she will have a grave key for sale. Buy it and open the closed door in the sewers of the undead settlement. In one of the dead ends you will find a woman in a white robe — this is Irina from Karim.

Talk to her and she will teach you the Pray gesture. If you accept her services, then she will move to the Firelink Temple, where she will sit in a dead end on the right side of it. The character interaction tab consists of the following items:

  • Learn Wonders
  • Buy item
  • Talk
  • Leave

In order for Irina to have new spells in her assortment, you will need to find four tomes:

  • Sacred tome from Karim
  • Deep Sacred Tome
  • Holy Tome of Lothric
  • Londor Sacred Tome.

There are two possible scenarios with this character. Let’s look at each of them. The first option is the most favorable. Tomes that you will find during the game are divided into two types: sacred and forbidden. You can donate any tomes, but you only need to purchase miracles from the sacred tomes, which include: the sacred tome from Carim and the sacred tome from Lothric. After you study all the wonders from these tomes and put the ashes of all the overlords, Irina will go to an abandoned turret behind the Temple of Fire. The entrance to it was guarded by a master of swords. Sitting in this place, she will stop trading, but, like a fire keeper, she will begin to level up the hero. In addition, she will return all forbidden tomes to you if you previously gave them to her.

To get a different version of the development of Irina’s story, you need to buy miracles from her from forbidden tomes, which include: the deep sacred tome and the Londor sacred tome. Acquire one Dark Wonder and then reload Firelink Shrine and you will see that Irina is gone. Move to the fire Judge Gundir and go towards the Temple of fire. As you approach the gate, you will hear the voice of Aegon, a knight from Carim. After a short speech, he will fight you. For defeating him, you will receive a large hammer of Morne and a groaning shield. Exit the gate and to the left behind them, you will see Irina lying. Touch her and you will send her back to the Firelink Shrine.

If you purchase all of the Dark Wonders from both forbidden tomes, Irina will go insane and stop selling items and spells, and will constantly ask you to touch her. If you equip Morn’s bracers, Irina will think that Aegon is nearby and remind him of his promise to put her out of her misery.

If you kill Irina, you can pick up Irina’s ashes and a tower key next to her body, which is similar to the key sold by the Temple Handmaid for 20,000 souls. Remember that after killing Irina, you will not be able to let go of this sin at the statue of Velka, and only in the new game+ will it disappear.

Interesting facts:

  • Irina is wearing a maiden set worn by Rhea of Thorolund, a character present in Dark Souls.
  • After buying dark wonders, Irina starts talking about small creatures biting her. This description is similar to the operation of the spirits of Humanity found in Dark Souls. Description for the soul of the fire keeper (Fire Keeper Souls) Anastasia of Astora (Anastacia of Astora), which is present in Dark Souls, talks more specifically about these creatures. The description explains: «Behind the thin shell soul of the firekeeper, a swarm of humanity writhing and wriggling. Is this a punishment for sins, or did the Ash Maiden go to prison of her own free will?»
  • Description to the ashes of Irina, tells that she was a weak woman and this weakness forced her to commit a terrible betrayal.
  • Irina’s story can be started at any point in the game, even by defeating key bosses.
  • The character was voiced by Sarah Beck Mather. who also voiced Lucatiel of Mirra from Dark Souls II.

DIALOGUES

If you touch Irina at the first meeting:

  • Oh yes, I feel so close, yes. So, I’m still not alone. Pray to the Merciful Gods…

If you talk to her in the sewers of the undead settlement, she will say:

  • Oh, I’m sorry. I am Irina from Karim. I was brought here to be made a firekeeper. Your touch snatched me from the hands of darkness. You are the Champion, right? I’m weak, I can’t keep the flame. But if it doesn’t cause you too much trouble, maybe I could serve you?

If you select the «Accept Her Services» tab, she will say:

  • Oh, thank you. I will take a vow. I, Irina of Carim, solemnly swear to serve you.

If you talk to Irina for the first time in the Temple of Fire, she will say:

  • Oh Champion of Ash. Welcome back. I couldn’t become a firekeeper, but it’s a great honor for me to serve you around the fire. The gods are more merciful than ever. I am eternally grateful to them — and to you. Now I’m in your arms. Your desire for me is an order.

If you talk to Irina by selecting the «Speak» tab:

  • At home, in Karima, I was a nun. I would love to share stories of miracles with you. Although, to be honest, I don’t know much about them. If I had a sacred tome, I would tell many more stories. Except, I can’t see anything… I’m terribly uncomfortable, but you’re going to have to find a sacred braille tome.

Give her the Sacred Tome of Carim and she will say:

  • O sacred tome. Now I can tell miracle stories for an eternity…

If you give her the Sacred Tome of Lothric, she will say:

  • Oh sacred tome. Now I can tell miracle stories for an eternity…

Give her the Abyssal Sacred Tome and she will say:

  • Oh, what is this… This is a forbidden sacred tome… These are dark stories about what hides deep inside people. .. stories not pleasant … Of course, if you insist, I will read them to you. But, um, they scare me too. It’s like some little creatures are biting me in the dark…

After buying all the dark wonders, she will say:

  • Who is there? Is there someone there? Ay? Oh, please, I don’t care who you are, touch me. Little creatures, they bite and bite. Please reach out your hand, touch me…

After the battle with Aegon, near the gate she will say:

  • Who is there? So is there someone? Ay? Ah, Champion. Why are you taking so long? Your touch… These little creatures, they bite and bite…

After learning the dark wonder, she will say:

  • Ah, Champion. Already leaving? Please come when you have time. I’m so afraid. I’m afraid that the darkness is eating me from the inside.

After she goes to the old turret behind Firelink Shrine:

  • Oh sweet Champion of Ash. Let souls be your strength…

If you kill Irina, then her last words will be:

  • Ash champion, how come… I just wanted to…

If you kill her while wearing Morne’s bracers, her last words will be:

  • Oh, a knight from Carim… Always true to his word.
