Accessing the Crown of the Sunken King DLC

After buying the DLC an item is added to the inventory: the Dragon Talon. The player must go to the primal bonfire chamber in the Black Gulch and examine an obelisk to be teleported to a chamber with a locked door that opens with the Dragon Talon. Players that don’t have the DLC can be summoned into it by placing their signs in this chamber. The signs will show up inside the DLC.

In Scholar of the First Sin, the Dragon Talon is no longer placed into your inventory. You now need to go to Black Gulch and kill the giants before the final bonfire and the boss fight with The Rotten to receive the Forgotten Key, which opens doors in Black Gulch and the Gutter, as well as a door in the pit in Majula. Inside the door in the pit will be a room with three chests and a corpse; the Dragon Talon can be looted off the corpse.

  • Drops 3 Twinkling Titanite, 3 Petrified Dragon Bones, and 1 Titanite Slab.
  • Immediately after them the Flower Skirt and Dark Greatsword can be found. (Note: Dark Greatsword can be obtained before defeating this boss by walking off the elevator next to the Priestess’ Chamber bonfire.)

Attacks

Attack Name Attack Description
Ancient Soldier Varg Dragon Tooth’s Moveset (Includes Jumping, Rolling and Running attacks)
Afflicted Graverobber Berserker Blade’s Moveset (Includes Jumping, Rolling and Running attacks)
Cerah the Old Explorer — Ranged While out of range he will shoot Greatarrows that will knock you down.
Cerah the Old Explorer — Melee Estoc’s Moveset (Includes Jumping, Rolling and Running attacks)

Strategy

Phantoms can split the enemy’s attention, which transforms the boss fight into a brawl consisting of multiple lesser duels.

Solo Strategy

«Afficted Graverober» moves with the highest speed of all three and usually attacks first before Varg and Cerah. Use this to your advantage and attempt to deal damage to him before his allies can arrive. Use parrying and backstabbing to deal a significant amount of damage without the need to expose yourself to Varg’s and Cerah’s counterattacks due to the resistance given during the execution of the critical hit. Be wary though of Graverobber’s quick attacks for though they cannot one shot you they can still deal a noticeable amount of damage. In fact damage dealt by the Graverobber just might be the perfect amount to get finished off by Varg’s hammer or Cerah’s Greatarrows.

«Ancient Soldier Verag» has the highest health pool, noticeably high poise, slow but high damage with his hammer ,but he moves the slowest of all three. Do not exchange hits with him, nor do not get greedy because the Tooth can easily oneshot you. Instead focus on taking down his colleagues whilst he is away due to his slow speed. Once he is left alone do not parry for it is probably impossible but instead attempt to backstab. You can also try to wear him off with a spear, but be wary of his high lightnining resistance.

«Cerah the Old Explorer» will attack you from distance with the usage of a Greatbow. Once up close he will attempt to jab you with his Estoc which can also perform swinging attacks. The best way to take him down is to attack him after killing the Graverobber and whilst Verag is too far to retaliate for harm you are causing. If it comes to attacking him, use the fact of his low poise to your advantage and attempt to parry his Rapier. He has the lowest health pool of all three which is noticeable. To avoid his Greatarrows you can either hide behind walls, leave him slowed down within the lake or roll into them.

Under the main area of the fight there is a watery area filled with statues. Beyond it forcing you to move more slowly and having an animated statue slug, it’s tight and difficult to fight within. This area is exitable, simply move to the left (orientation: face forward from the boss entrance) and look for a ramp that will lead you upward.

Video Strategy:

Hints

  • Each one of them can be made to bleed or/and be poisoned.
  • The water within the area under the main one slows the squadron as well, one can use this fact to make them split.

Trivia

  • «Varg» is the Swedish word for wolf.
  • The squadron can be referred to as the «Gank Squad».
  • This boss may be a hint to the player of how the PvP could look like without the latency issue.
  • Their names do not seem to fit one another. Perhaps these people are just totally unrelated hollows who had bumped into themselves within the cave.
  • Varg seems to be cosplaying as «Havel, the Rock», having his full set, his Greatshield and the iconic Dragon Tooth.
  • Cerah has somehow acquired a Lucatiel’s Mask, Black Leather Armor and leather gloves and leggings. He wields an Estoc and a Dragonslayer Greatbow.
  • Graverobber wears Alva’s armor and dual-wields Berserker Blades. He will powerstance with said blades.

    Crown of the Sunken King

    DLC entrance

You can get into the first addition after the boss Rotting in the Black Cleft. Behind the boss is a passage to the Far Bonfire, and behind it is a portal to the DLC. To activate the portal, you need a key — the Dragon’s Claw. He lies in the Pit in Majula behind a closed door, which in turn is opened by the Forgotten Key, which falls out of two Giants in the Black Cleft. nine0005

Shulva Sacred City — a lost underworld.

After the teleport we pass a small underground corridor, not much different from other caves. But here the exit is visible ahead, the sound of water and the breath of the wind are heard. No, this is not an exit to the surface, this is an exit to a huge cave complex, in which there are lakes, rivers and waterfalls, there is a giant pyramid and the wind is blowing through all these expanses. Although this wind is somehow unusual … we go a little forward along the path and see the Dormant Dragon Sin to our right. He really sleeps, besides, he is pierced with a spear and apparently greatly weakened by this fact. As soon as we approach, the dragon wakes up and angrily flies away, to where no one will disturb his sleep . .. for now. And a little further along the path — the first location fire. nine0005

First bonfire — Passage to the sanctuary.

From the fire to the left and down there will be a cut, but now it is closed. Therefore, we go straight along the rocky path to the turn. The first local enemy will sit near the wall — the Soldier of the Sanctuary with a mace. They are quite strong, and their blows are poisonous. Next, multi-storey buildings begin, moving columns, stairs, and so on.

Behind the first soldier we enter the platform, in front you can see another soldier with a bow, who may already be shooting at us. Beside him sit two soldiers with maces. More to the left is the second pack of soldiers: 3 with bows and one with a mace. But before you run to cut them, you should pay attention to a small triangular-shaped column glowing blue. The first is immediately to the left, and the second is visible a little further away near the second group of soldiers. It would be better to immediately hit the nearest column — this will trigger the mechanism, and where the first archer stands, a powerful column will rise from the ground, at the same time taking almost all the lives of these soldiers. Now you can quickly run and finish them off. And now we have good cover from the arrows of the three archers on the left. We lure out a soldier with a mace and repeat the same maneuver with the second column — we knock, a column rises from the ground, blocks the shelling of the Lukars, perhaps even injuring someone. Together with the column, another soldier with a mace will arrive — first we pick him up, and then in turn the archers. If you jump onto the roof of the second pillar while it is rising, you can jump over to the adjacent pillar and take the Quartz Ring of Darkness +3. nine0005

The pillars move pillars and platforms that give access to gifts and secret places. But for a quick passage of the location, most of the columns can not be touched at all.

Then we jump down or go down on a column, to where the soldier wanders with a mace, right in front of us there will be a column raising a column with a gift Longbow +7 on the right, there will be a path to the right to the second soldier, who is sleeping near the wall with a lance and a shield, and on the corpse lies the Stone of Poison. From here we need to go straight along a small staircase, into the passage between two buildings. But first, let’s go into the left building, where there are red eggs with poisonous slurry that breaks armor, and two insects. Immediately turn left again, exit the building. On the right, an insect will sit on the wall, and on the left, a column that will raise the platform, allowing us to go into the next building. A soldier with a pike is sleeping here, and at the top of the stump is a Poison Bite Ring +1 and you can return to the fire if you wish. We return to the stairs to the passage between the two buildings. nine0005

Now we go to the right building and immediately turn left, exit to the balcony. There is a post here that will push the platform forward, and we can jump to the soldier with the bow. Although under us there is another column that will push the second platform and you can just run through, but it’s easier to jump. Where there is an archer, there will also be a pikeman around the corner. And here is another column that pushes a large platform in front. Now you can jump down the stairs, pick up a soldier with a mace. Now we run down the retracted platform and jump into the door into the room with red eggs, chop the insects and on the second floor we will pick up Elizabeth’s Mushroom on the balcony. From here you have a good view of a wide path with archers, and their arrows are already flying at us. We return back where we moved the platforms and go down the stairs. nine0005

To the left, next to the two presents, is a bunch of poisonous statues on a turtle. You can simply bypass it, or hit the turtle with shots. Directly and to the left there will be an inconspicuous nook, where a soldier with a mace sits, who, of course, will attack unexpectedly from the back if he is missed. And to the right there will be the same path with archers that we saw from the balcony and new posts.

In fact, you don’t have to walk along this path — it’s just an area with mobs and gifts. You can go down the stairs and immediately turn left and down. Right there will be a small platform with a corpse and the Mace of the sanctuary. And in the building there are two soldiers with maces. We leave the building through the door to the left and to the right there will be a narrow bridge of white pebbles — we will have to go there. But it is worth at least kindling a second fire, it is right in the same building, only higher. Therefore, we return to the path and go a little forward to the first triangular column on the left. He raises a column that you can jump on and climb to the top floor of the building and there will be a second fire. And you can clear this entire area, raise all the columns and run to the fire through the far tower. nine0005

Let’s take a quick run down the trail. An archer is in front, a pikeman lies in front of him. Behind the archer turn and there are two more archers and a pikeman lies in front of them, we clean them. We return to the first column and raise it if not raised earlier. A little further to the left are two more columns, you can shoot at them from afar so that they rise. There are floors on the second column and there is a Thunder Quartz Ring +3, which you can get if you lower the first column, then hit the column, jump onto the roof and when the column rises, run across to the gifts. Then you can jump over to the building where the fire is and return to the path. nine0005

To the right of the path there is also a post and a rising column, but it is useless. Therefore, we go to the end of the path to the tower. On the right on the corpse there will be 3 shimmering titanites — it’s worth picking up. In the tower sits a bunch of poisonous statues, and behind the tower is the last column, raising the fourth column. Now, climbing the tower and running along the columns, again we get to the fire. But there is one more secret place here.

To the right of the tower, across the cliff below, you can see statues with red eyes, and if you look closely, there is another blue column hidden behind the statues. We take out a long-range weapon and shoot at the column so that it turns around. A column rises from below, along which we can now go into the cave. In addition to various gifts and Bundles of poisonous statues, an unusual Pagan tree grows in this cave. If you whip it with a whip, then it will heal the equipment, and by the way, Spiked Whip +7 is right next to it. Now you can go to the second fire, rest. nine0005

    Second fire — Prayer tower.

We go down from the fire and go to the very narrow bridge and cross it. Right — the entrance to the tower, there is an elevator, but so far it does not work. We will return here later. We need to go left — to a stronger bridge, on which there are two soldiers. But as soon as we approach, the Dragon Sin flies and burns the soldiers — something he can’t sleep … Before going to the bridge, you can still go around the tower — there is a magic spell Focused Souls on the corpse. Well, now we cross the bridge. There are large stone doors, automatics work and they rise. We pass the corridor and find ourselves in the Dragon Sanctuary. nine0005

The Dragon Shrine is a labyrinth inside the pyramid.

Corridors, stairs, rooms and halls start from here. The first room on the left will have a closed door that leads up to the third Shulva City bonfire and an optional boss. We will find the key to this door at the end of the Sanctuary. Therefore, we pass directly, we go down the stairs to the second room. On the left there will be a door that opens with a button — there are gifts. There will be another descent straight down the stairs to the hall with a large round door, but it’s not worth going there yet: the stairs break off there, it will be impossible to go back, and a bunch of soldiers and the priestess of the sanctuary will immediately attack us. nine0005

We go into the passage on the right. Here is a large hall with two Shrine Knights in ghost form — quite serious opponents, because while they are in the form of ghosts, they are immune to physical damage, only magic, which is also heavily curtailed. And they themselves have powerful attacks, and here there are even more of them. In order for these knights to gain flesh, you need to destroy their remains, then it will be much easier to defeat the knights. Here the remains lie in the center of the room on the tombs. And there are as many as five chests with gifts. nine0005

From the hall there is an exit to the left — we find ourselves on the balcony, of that large hall, to which the destroyed staircase leads. And here are four soldiers with maces and some are shrouded in a poisonous cloud, and a button is hidden in the floor that activates the trap: an arrow gun hidden in the wall. The easiest way is to lure and kill all the soldiers in turn. At the end of the balcony is a chest with a crossbow trap. From here you can shoot the soldier and the priestess in the hall and jump down from the balcony.

There will be a large round door on the right, which is rotated using the button on the floor in front of it. There is an archer upstairs and will shoot from there while we turn the door. We make ourselves an exit, run in and to the right a long narrow passage. Here you need to carefully look under your feet, at the stairs. After the first flight, there will be two nooks with a gift on the sides, and further down the stairs there will be a dip, which is hardly noticeable. It must be jumped over to get to a secret place with gifts. In the wall on the left, in the recess, there will be a button that can only be pressed with arrows, and it will open a nearby door. And a little further down the narrow passage, high on the wall, there will be a second button that opens another secret door in the secret room. We go to the room. On the left there will be a soldier with a pike, and on the right there will be a ladder, in front of which there is a trap button on the floor that activates spikes from the walls. And below are two more pikemen, who can just be lured and, having stepped on the trap button, see how this mechanism of death works. There are three chests with gifts in this room and the most interesting thing here is the Stone Mosaic Sword. nine0005

Now we return to the broken steps and jump down. To the left there will be an insect and a hole in the floor into a room where there are even more of these flies and a bunch of red eggs. If you jump there and survive, you can collect many different small gifts, then climb the stairs and take Flynn’s Ring in the chest. A rather dubious thing that increases damage at the lowest load, but the increase is not great. After this chest, we leave the room and again find ourselves in a narrow corridor, go down to the failed steps and jump off. nine0005

Now we go to the other side, where there is a step ladder and a floor with spikes, which is painful to walk on. There is a rather difficult place that you can just run through, or carefully remove enemy after enemy. There is a lot of valuables here, including the key to the very door at the beginning of the Sanctuary and the key to further passage to the bosses.

There is a narrow path with no spikes along the wall to the right, but just around the corner to the left is a ghostly shrine knight. Upstairs on the bridge is a priestess and throws damage. And if you go straight, there will be three passages to the right — there is another area with spikes. On the right is a round door — it is closed, and on the left is the second ghostly knight and a staircase upstairs. Even in the second passage there is a button that opens a door with a chest near the stairs. In this chest is an important key Dragon Stone, which will lower the whole bridge further for us. nine0005

From here we go up the stairs and to the left after the priestess. From this bridge, you can see the button behind the large round door and hit it with a bow. Then go down, come close and hit a second time, then climb the bridge again and shoot a third time, thus, by scrolling the door, we can go to the secret chest, in which the spell of miracles is Denial. It grants a second chance if lethal damage is dealt, but lasts only 3-4 minutes and requires more than 24 Faith.

Directly across the bridge is a room containing another priestess, another knight, and a chest with a crossbow trap. There is also a button that opens the passage up the stairs and leads back into a narrow passage with high walls. But we need to go right, across the bridge. To the left you can see the descent to the chest — there is a Blood Bite Ring +1, but now we run straight, up the stairs and enter a room with three more ghostly knights and two large holes in the floor. This is a crypt, the remains of all the ghostly knights lie here, and we can finally return their mortal bodies to them. Initially, it was even possible to quickly run past all the enemies to this room and break all the remains so as not to mess with the knights in ghost form. Having dealt with the opponents, we find in this crypt the Key to the Eternal Sanctuary. With it, you can run to the beginning of this pyramid, open the door and go to the last fire of Shulva and the optional boss — treasure hunters. But in order not to go through everything all over again, it is worth running to the first fire of the Sanctuary. nine0005

We leave the crypt, collect everything that we did not collect in this place, go down and go to the stairs leading below. On the right, it can be seen that the staircase is destroyed, and right at the top lies an inaccessible corpse so far. We go down and the knight will attack on the right, now in his usual form, since we broke all the remains in the crypt. And if you turn back from the stairs, then a little higher we will see a button that opens the door to the fire. We shoot at the button and run back along the stairs, to the left into the passage, climb the stairs in the wall and jump straight into the opened passage. To the right is the first sanctuary bonfire, and a little further to the right is a corpse with a sanctuary Crossbow. This is where we will gain a foothold, rest and think about where we want to go next. Here you can already hear the singing of Queen Elana — there is not much left before her. And there is already Dragon Sin close. Or you can run to the beginning of the Sanctuary with the found key, go up to the third fire of Shulva and go to the optional boss — Varg, Cerach and the Ravager. nine0005

Usually in DLC the optional bosses are easier and you can level up on them before going to the required ones.

So, let’s not be distracted and continue the passage of the Sanctuary, although the main part has already been passed, and only here we lit the first fire.

The first bonfire is the Secret Room of the Sanctuary.

We go down the stairs again to the ghostly knight. On the left you can see a large hall, and a descent to the bottom of the pyramid — there are bosses. But for now, the only way for us is to the right, down the stairs, to the place where Jester Thomas invades. This is not an easy opponent, with powerful pyromancy and quite fidgety, but with a weak balance. After it, to the right is a foggy exit from the pyramid, behind which is a beautiful underground lake. nine0005

Powerful mobs that look like dinosaurs walk around here — Imperfections in the amount of five pieces. With which you need to fight very carefully so as not to aggro two at once. From afar, they throw fireballs, close up, they bite and butt painfully, and their weak point, like that of wyverns, is their legs. But they drop Petrified Dragon Bones for pumping unique weapons and pieces of titanite. And here, if you go straight from the exit from the pyramid, there is a second fire of the sanctuary.

Second bonfire — Lair of the Imperfect. nine0257

From the fire we move along the lake to the right behind the pyramid, dismantling or running past the Imperfections and picking up gifts from the corpses. As a result, we go out on land and see a pedestal with a round stone on the left. This is where the Dragon Stone key comes in handy, which activates a mechanism that raises two platforms, and, at the top, forms a bridge back to the pyramid. We get down and go left into the passage.

Here we see a column that activates the elevator. And if you go straight, then a little further along the path on the corpse lies the Two-Handed Sword of Dragon’s Blood. We return and take the elevator. The first ascent will take us just to the bridge to the pyramid. You can transfer to a nearby elevator and go even higher right to the first fire of the city of Shulva — this is such a cut, if necessary. We go out to the bridge and climb up the stairs and enter the pyramid. From here to the right and down into the breach of the steps. Then the descent begins mainly: jumps and falls. We go down the stairs to the floor and go out into the large hall, where Elana’s singing is heard. At the bottom right, you can see the balcony on which the last Knight of the Sanctuary stands, and even lower, you can already see the fog towards the boss. We jump down to the bridge. nine0005

In order not to lose life, you need to choose some landing points higher in order to fly less — here you can jump onto a fragment of a column.

Then we jump straight from the bridge and go into the room. There is a new enemy here — a knight of dragon’s blood, in beautiful armor. He swings his sword well, but backstabs quite easily. There are two large round doors in this room, and if you turn the right one twice, then four crystal lizards will immediately jump from above. It is unlikely that you will be able to kill all four, so it makes sense to run here again after the fire. Just behind the right door is a Sanctuary Soldier with a crossbow. And there is nothing of value in the rooms behind the doors. We leave back and go to the right, and to the left to the next broken bridge, we jump down. Then we run across the destroyed steps directly to the floor. Here it is better to go straight along the corridor, there will be a corpse with a gift, turn left and go to the end where another Dragon Blood Knight is around the corner. From here there is a dilapidated staircase to the floor below. We go down, there is another fire behind the wall. To get there, you need to go around the square room to where there is a staircase in them and open an illusory door, not reaching the stairs, somewhere in the middle of the wall. nine0005

    Third bonfire — Sanctuary Center.

If you turn left from the fire and go down the stairs, there are two more dragonblood knights. And indoors under the fire lies the set of the Knight of the Dragon’s Blood. But in order to go further, you still need to return and from the third fire of the Sanctuary go to the right, to where the torch burns and to the left to the next destroyed bridge. From here you can already jump to the very bottom along the column. But on the second floor on the left there will be another span with two blood knights and a bunch of corpses with gifts. nine0005

From here, no one and nothing will stop us from going down to the bottom of the pyramid to the foggy passage to the first boss — the Bad Queen Elana.

    Fel Queen Elana

After defeating Elana, the bas-relief wall opens to reveal a passage to the Dragon’s Refuge’s only bonfire. And you can immediately go into battle for the crown of the Burnt King. But now, perhaps, I will digress and go to the optional boss of this add-on, at the same time pump up before the final battle.

Shulva Sacred City — optional zone. nine0019

Let’s use the bonfire and go to the second Shulva bonfire. And again we will run along the bridges to the entrance of the Sanctuary. And as soon as we enter the pyramid, we immediately turn left and open the door using the key found earlier. Behind the door are two priestesses and 5 chests with useful items. Then we go up the wall stairs. After two spans there will be a small intersection of corridors: straight ahead another staircase, to the right exit to the bridge, to the left is a dead end and immediately 3 insects attack us. First, let’s go even higher and pick up the Shield of the Sanctuary in the chest. And then we go down and go to the bridge. Here, a red phantom with a spear invades our world — Balder the Stone Shield. Well, behind him is the third fire of Shulva

Shulva’s third bonfire — Priestess’ Room.

Behind the fire we see a passage in the rock and an elevator down. We don’t really need an elevator here — because there is a fire. But during the descent of the elevator, you can go to the intermediate floor and pick up the Two-Handed Sword of Darkness in the room, and then through the window on which the corpse with the Torches lies, jump to the base of the tower. Our main goal is from the third fire — to go to the cave. After running through the tunnel, we see the fog, passing through which we find ourselves in the Cave of the Dead.

Cave of the Dead — additional location. nine0019

We jump down to the statues — here is the start zone and here you can call on two phantoms to help you pass the location: Greedy Andrey and Pathetic Alfis. There are no fires in this location, so if we die, we will have to run from the third fire of Shulva. We jump further and to the left. Three soldiers of the sanctuary are waiting for us here: two with maces, one with a pike. Also, these caves are full of statues that spit a petrifying liquid. Having defeated the soldiers, we look into the holes in the floor. If you turn right from the entrance, then in this hole you will see three soldiers of the sanctuary: one with a bow, and two with maces are lying on the ground. All of them can be shot at once from something from above. Then we jump down into the same hole. nine0005

Not far from where we landed, there is an important landmark — a brazier that can be lit with a torch. A little to the left of it there is a branch into which we will need to go further, so it is better to immediately set fire to this brazier so as not to get lost. True, two more soldiers of the sanctuary who roam nearby can interfere with us, but they usually do not run right away. Having memorized the brazier, you can begin to rummage through all the corners of this cave hall. In addition to the soldiers, there are also bunches of petrifying statues. After clearing the room, you can move on. If you look at the brazier, then we need a second passage to the left. There again it will be necessary to jump. nine0005

And the last level of the cave remained. There are three soldiers and a worm in the wall — we bring down everyone in turn and run through this small cave to the passage into the fog to the boss.

Varg, Cerach and the Tomb Raider

After the boss, you can go straight ahead, pick up the Flower Skirt in the chest and jump down to where the elevator passes and in the room you can pick up the Two-Handed Sword of Darkness, if we didn’t take it earlier. There is nothing else to do here, except to go to Dragon Sin and take away the crown of the Stuffy King. We run to the fire and are transported to the Dragon’s Refuge. nine0005

Dragon’s Hideout — Come out monster, the hero has come!

Let’s make all the preparations, don’t forget the medicines and antidotes, and go ahead to defeat the dragon.

    Sin Slumbering Dragon

After the victory, the Crown of the Smoldering King appears in the center of the arena. You can pick up and stomp to Vendrik to brag about the second crown.

And here on the corpse lies the ring of Yorg — the very leader of the Knights of the Blood of the Dragon, who pierced Sin with a spear, and apparently was roasted for it.
