In short, CronusMax Plus is an adapter with which you can connect any gamepads to any consoles and PCs, for example, use your favorite Xbox Elite Controller on PlayStation 4, or vice versa — DualShock 4 with Xbox One, which I actually do .
There are an incredible number of use cases. You can connect to anything not only any gamepads, but also mice, keyboards, steering wheels or controllers for fighting games. But this is only a small part of the useful functions of this device. In this article, I want to describe CronusMax Plus in detail and how important this small adapter is in my life. nine0003
A little about me
First of all, I would like to get acquainted and tell about myself. My name is Sergey, on the Internet I’m under the nickname Corgeone , I’m a little over 30, and I have «minor» health problems — diagnosed with SMA ( spinal muscular amyotrophy ). For you to understand, with this disease, the muscles of the whole body suffer. For example, I can’t stand up, stretch my arm forward, or pick up and bring my smartphone to my ear. But, nevertheless, I really like video games. I have been fond of them all my life, I play a lot, often, in different games, including hardcore ones, mainly on consoles.

This diagnosis affects, including the muscles of the hands , it is constantly progressing and therefore every year it becomes more and more difficult to play. Moreover, at this stage, I can’t even type on a computer keyboard and for this review I type on the smartphone’s on-screen keyboard using swipe gestures. When it comes to games, I often have to invent new ways to interact with the console. For example, I just physically, under no circumstances, can press the gamepad sticks ( R3 / RS , L3 / LS usually in games these buttons are used to accelerate or run), I just don’t have enough strength, so in games I often can’t “run” (actually, like in real life: D). Also, due to my features, the shape of the gamepad and the location of the buttons and sticks of are very critical for me . The initial problem that prompted me to buy this device was that I could no longer play on the Xbox due to its proprietary gamepad and asymmetric stick arrangement. Due to my physical characteristics, it is completely inconvenient for me to hold it in my hands and reach up to the stick with my left finger. At the same time, is comfortable for me to interact with DualShock 4 , the PlayStation 4 gamepad, and this is the only way to solve my problem, but there is no easy way to connect a Sony gamepad to a Microsoft console. You have to use adapters, which are actually not so many.
My requirements are not very high, I just wanted to play as comfortably as possible, with a wireless connection of the gamepad and have some additional features. And here the universal device CronusMax Plus comes to the rescue, which includes all this. nine0003
Equipment
Officially, the device is not sold in Russia, but if you wish, you can find it in online stores or in people’s hands. The scope of delivery consists of the following items:
- CronusMax Plus adapter;
- DualShock 4 Wireless Bluetooth Adapter;
- Sound card for PlayStation 4, with which you can connect audio headsets to the console, the card is connected to the USB port of the PlayStation 4, and it already has a microphone and headphones via a 3.5 mm jack; nine0046
- USB cable for connecting the device to a computer;
- Audio cable extension.
Unfortunately, the big disadvantage of this solution is that neither the PlayStation nor the Xbox can connect the headset directly to the gamepad and communicate as before.
You have to use either wireless headphones with Xbox Wireless technology (if we are talking about PlayStation, then any compatible wireless headphones), or to invent setups with two gamepads, I will talk more about this later. nine0003
Connecting and configuring CronusMax Plus
Setting up and connecting to Xbox consoles is not the easiest step if you want everything to work quickly and conveniently. There are two ways to connect .
A relatively «simple» method includes the following connection steps:
- The first thing to do is to connect CronusMax Plus to the computer via a special cable that comes with the kit and perform the initial setup, select the console you want to use (or set it to automatic, but then CronusMax will take a little longer to log in when connected), decide whether you will use the Bluetooth or a wired gamepad connection and select special settings for stable operation of the device.
In addition, at this stage, you can immediately reconfigure the assignment of buttons and to load scripts , but I will talk about this in more detail a little later. In general, you need to configure approximately as shown in the screenshots above. nine0046
- Next, you need to connect CronusMax to any USB port of the console, in my case it is Xbox.
- After that it is necessary to authorize native gamepad from Xbox . This is done by the usual wired connection of the Xbox gamepad to the CronusMax USB port. Before that, needs to remove the batteries from the gamepad, otherwise he will not be able to log in . As soon as the authorization is successful, a special indicator will appear on the display of the device, which will indicate that you can connect the DualShock. This process is necessary for CronusMax to act as a «replacement» for the original Xbox controller. nine0086
- You can then disconnect the Xbox controller and connect the Bluetooth adapter to CronusMax instead.
On the Sony gamepad, hold down the PS and SHARE buttons to enter it into search mode (this is done only once and the adapter remembers this device forever) and in a few seconds the PlayStation controller will be connected to the Xbox and completely replace the original gamepad.
As for delays (input lag), they are, but they are very small, almost imperceptible and I am completely satisfied in any game, but if this is critical for someone, then DualShock can be connected to CronusMax via wire instead of Bluetooth.
The main disadvantage of the first «simple» method is that each time the set-top box is turned on, will have to go through the authorization stage of the native Xbox gamepad again and only then connect the DualShock. In order to avoid routine repetition of actions, there is a second connection option.
Difficult but comfortable is just the right fit for me. The only thing is that for its implementation it is necessary to purchase any, the cheapest USB hub .

The purpose of this setup is for to authorize the original Xbox controller automatically . That is, the hub is connected to CronusMax, in turn, a Bluetooth adapter and an Xbox controller are immediately connected to the hub. All that remains is to connect CronusMax (with the entire setup) to the console, wait a while, usually no more than 20-30 seconds, this time is enough for authorization, and simply turn on the DualShock. Everything, you can immediately play. As a result, this method, which is difficult in the initial setup, becomes very simple, fast and convenient .
Above, I promised to tell you how to use a wired headset on the Xbox in a similar scheme. This requires a second Xbox gamepad ( is the one that is connected to the authorization scheme, unfortunately you cannot use ).
So, turn on the Xbox with a second controller with a headset connected to it. After that, connect CronusMax and play from it, and “take” the sound and microphone from the original controller. In order for it not to turn off due to inactivity (sound transmission is not considered activity in the Xbox system and the gamepad falls asleep after a few minutes, which is very strange in my opinion), it can be connected via cable directly to the Xbox or enable the «Copilot» feature in the Xbox Accessories app. I described above how to use a wired headset on the PlayStation 4, everything is easier there, using a sound card from the CronusMax kit.
By the way, about using this device on the PlayStation 4 with other controllers. Everything is much easier than with the Xbox. You just need to connect CronusMax to the USB port of the set-top box, then connect, for example, an Xbox gamepad to the adapter via a cable, and everything will work right away. Authorization of the original controller is not required in this case .
Also, if you want to play on the PlayStation 4 with your native DualShock controller, then connect a Bluetooth adapter to CronusMax and simply turn on the DualShock paired with the adapter. But here the question arises: why is this needed, is it easier to connect it directly? The answer lies in the use of scripts (macros), which I will discuss below.
Scripts, macros, programming
The iron part of the review is over, but there is something more important. There is one more problem that I described above. What to do with what I am I can’t physically press some buttons, for example, L3 / LS, R3 / RS sticks, and this functionality is often used in games and I have to somehow limit myself, which negatively affects the interaction with games. If the game asks me to press a button that is inaccessible to me, I have to temporarily reconfigure it with the system capabilities of the consoles, which is very inconvenient. Sometimes in a few minutes of gameplay, I change controls two or three times to get through this or that scene .

I use special personal scripts only to make control for my weak hands accessible and possible so that I can play and enjoy games. - Sensitive Triggers : I’ve always had trouble getting L2/R2, LT/RT triggers all the way down, especially in racing or open world games with cars. Now these buttons always work at 100%, even if I touch them very little.
- The functionality of the touchpad : it was programmatically divided into two parts and programmed as follows: if I click on its right side, then the R3 / RS button works, if on the left, then, respectively, L3 / LS. Most scripts are universal and work on both Xbox and PlayStation without any reconfiguration.
I have several variations of them, one includes sensitive triggers, another has auto run, and the third has them all together. By the way, here is an example of one of my scripts, in which all add-ons are involved.

These few very simple functions added to the script are incredibly important to me and thanks to them I can fully interact with any game . For many, this may seem strange, but in my case, these little things become the basis for the availability of a digital product. Where an ordinary gamer can just press a button and not even notice it, taking it for granted, then I and people like me have to invent entire schemes . Just to press one button and make the character run or duck.
Compatible with nextgen consoles
Last but not least, what I would like to talk about is compatibility with next generation consoles. CronusMax Plus is unfortunately only partially compatible with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
- On the Xbox Series X, the works exactly like the on the previous generation. It is only necessary to change the Xbox gamepad to a new one in the connection diagram, although everything works fine with the old one. All games are supported and did not even have to somehow fix the scripts. nine0046
- The PlayStation 5 console is a bit more complicated. New DualSense controller not supported by CronusMax Plus . The gamepad does not react at all with any type of connection. But if you connect a DualShock 4, it works and is defined in the same way as on the PlayStation 4, but new games are not supported. Accordingly, with the help of CronusMax Plus on the PlayStation 5, you can go through projects from the previous generation in backward compatibility mode. By the way, on the PlayStation 5 via CronusMax via cable works fine and the controller from the new Xbox Series X , but still only for games of the past generation.
Cronus developers have released a new version of their device — Cronus Zen. It has become much more convenient, because it immediately has a built-in hub, Bluetooth and there is full support for the new generation of consoles. But there is also a minus — the price is much higher than on CronusMax. While I do not have access to this device, but if it does, I will definitely give my opinion on the experience of use. nine0003

Unfortunately, the big disadvantage of this solution is that neither the PlayStation nor the Xbox can connect the headset directly to the gamepad and communicate as before. You have to use either wireless headphones with Xbox Wireless technology (if we are talking about PlayStation, then any compatible wireless headphones), or to invent setups with two gamepads, I will talk more about this later.

Connecting and setting up CronusMax Plus
Setting up and connecting to Xbox consoles is not the easiest step if you want everything to work quickly and conveniently. There are two ways to connect .
The relatively «simple» method includes the following connection steps: the cable that comes with the kit and perform the initial setup, select the console you want to use (or set it to automatic, but then CronusMax will take a little longer to log in when connected), decide whether you will use Bluetooth or a wired gamepad connection and select special settings for stable operation of the device. In addition, at this stage, you can immediately reconfigure the assignment of buttons and to load scripts , but I will talk about this in more detail a little later. In general, you need to configure approximately as shown in the screenshots above.

As for delays (input lag), they are, but they are very small, almost imperceptible and I am completely satisfied in any game, but if this is critical for someone, then DualShock can be connected to CronusMax via wire instead of Bluetooth.
The main disadvantage of the first «simple» method is that each time you turn on the set-top box, will have to go through the authorization stage of the native Xbox controller again and only then connect the DualShock. In order to avoid routine repetition of actions, there is a second connection option.
Difficult but comfortable is just the right fit for me. The only thing is that for its implementation it is necessary to purchase any, the cheapest USB hub . You can see my wiring diagram in this photo.

The purpose of this setup is to authorize the original Xbox controller automatically .
That is, the hub is connected to CronusMax, in turn, a Bluetooth adapter and an Xbox controller are immediately connected to the hub. All that remains is to connect CronusMax (with the entire setup) to the console, wait a while, usually no more than 20-30 seconds, this time is enough for authorization, and simply turn on the DualShock. Everything, you can immediately play. As a result, this method, which is difficult in the initial setup, becomes very0252 simple, fast and convenient .
Above, I promised to tell you how to use a wired headset on the Xbox in a similar scheme. This requires a second Xbox gamepad ( is the one that is connected to the authorization scheme, unfortunately you cannot use ). So, turn on the Xbox with a second controller with a headset connected to it. After that, connect CronusMax and play from it, and “take” the sound and microphone from the original controller. In order for it not to turn off due to inactivity (sound transmission is not considered activity in the Xbox system and the gamepad falls asleep after a few minutes, which is very strange in my opinion), it can be connected via cable directly to the Xbox or Enable the «Copilot» feature in the Xbox Accessories app.
I described above how to use a wired headset on the PlayStation 4, everything is easier there, using a sound card from the CronusMax kit.
By the way, about using this device on the PlayStation 4 with other controllers. Everything is much easier than with the Xbox. You just need to connect CronusMax to the USB port of the set-top box, then connect, for example, an Xbox gamepad to the adapter via a cable, and everything will work right away. Authorization of the original controller is not required in this case . Also, if you want to play on the PlayStation 4 with your native DualShock controller, then connect a Bluetooth adapter to CronusMax and simply turn on the DualShock paired with the adapter. But here the question arises: why is this needed, is it easier to connect it directly? The answer lies in the use of scripts (macros), which I will discuss below.
Scripts, macros, programming
We are done with the «iron» part of the review, but there is something more important.
There is one more problem that I described above. What to do with what I am I can’t physically press some buttons, for example, L3 / LS, R3 / RS sticks, and this functionality is often used in games and I have to somehow limit myself, which negatively affects the interaction with games. If the game asks me to press a button that is inaccessible to me, I have to temporarily reconfigure it with the system capabilities of the consoles, which is very inconvenient. Sometimes in a few minutes of gameplay, I change controls two or three times to get through this or that scene . Scripts , or otherwise, macros are almost limitless possibilities for reconfiguring buttons, controls and creating additional functions that can be loaded into the device’s memory. Up to 9 pieces can be stored there, and switching between them is done using a button on the CronusMax itself.

As an example, people create all sorts of simplifications, such as faster shooting, double jump, quick turns, more sensitive sticks and buttons, and much more, just about everything imaginable. Someone will consider these decisions to be cheating, but this is the choice of everyone. nine0003
I only use specific personal scripts to make controls accessible and possible for my weaker hands so that I can play and enjoy games.
It is logical to assume that the very first thing I did after purchasing and initial setup of the device was to start reading the community forum. Initially, the idea was: why not use the DualShock touchpad somehow? Wrote a community forum thread about this and we came up with an interesting solution.
I have identified the most difficult moments of interaction with the gamepad and settled on the following features that are used in my script:
- Autorun : the most inaccessible feature for me ended up being automatic. If I tilt the left stick forward by more than 99%, then the script fires and «presses» on L3 / LS and the character in the game starts to run. These couple of lines of code made it as easy as possible for me to manage.
- Sensitive Triggers : I’ve always had trouble getting L2/R2, LT/RT triggers all the way down, especially in racing or open world games with cars. Now these buttons always work at 100%, even if I touch them very little.

- The functionality of the touchpad : it was programmatically divided into two parts and programmed as follows: if I click on its right side, then the R3 / RS button works, if on the left, then, respectively, L3 / LS. And if I press the touchpad with two fingers, the “View” button on the Xbox works, or the usual touchpad-click if I play on the PlayStation. In the photos I tried to show how it works.

Most scripts are universal and work on both Xbox and PlayStation without any reconfiguration. I have several variations of them, one includes sensitive triggers, another has auto run, and the third has them all together. By the way, here is an example of one of my scripts, in which all add-ons are involved.

These few very simple functions added to the script are incredibly important to me and thanks to them I can fully interact with any game .
For many, this may seem strange, but in my case, these little things become the basis for the availability of a digital product. Where an ordinary gamer can just press a button and not even notice it, taking it for granted, then I and people like me have to invent entire schemes . Just to press one button and make the character run or duck.
Compatibility with next generation consoles
Last but not least, what I would like to talk about is compatibility with next generation consoles. CronusMax Plus is unfortunately only partially compatible with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. nine0003
- On Xbox Series X, the device works completely the same as on the previous generation. It is only necessary to change the Xbox gamepad to a new one in the connection diagram, although everything works fine with the old one. All games are supported and did not even have to somehow fix the scripts.
- The PlayStation 5 is a bit more complicated.
The new DualSense controller is not supported by CronusMax Plus . The gamepad does not react at all with any type of connection. But if you connect a DualShock 4, it works and is defined in the same way as on the PlayStation 4, but new games are not supported. Accordingly, with the help of CronusMax Plus on the PlayStation 5, you can go through projects from the previous generation in backward compatibility mode. By the way, on the PlayStation 5 via CronusMax via cable works fine and the controller from the new Xbox Series X , but still only for games of the past generation.
At the moment, Cronus developers have released a new version of their device — Cronus Zen. It has become much more convenient, because it immediately has a built-in hub, Bluetooth and there is full support for the new generation of consoles. But there is also a minus — the price is much higher than on CronusMax. While I do not have access to this device, but if it does, I will definitely give my opinion on the experience of use.
