Captain Marvel’s Power Increase Risks A Huge Avengers 5 Problem

Captain Marvel has always been a powerful character, and soon she will be even more so. However, this creates a problem for Avengers 5 and the MCU.

Brie Larson has recently revealed that Carol Danvers will be stronger in Captain Marvel 2, which poses a massive problem for Avengers 5. While the hero’s increased strength may sound exciting at first, Captain Marvel is already fairly overpowered compared to the rest of the MCU. Because of this, it will not only be hard to find a villain that would be a match for Danvers, but it would also negate the need for a team in Avengers 5.

First teased at the end of Avengers: Infinity War, Captain Marvel is one of the more recent additions to the MCU. The character is one of the series’ most powerful superheroes, helping to end galactic wars and save entire planets in a snap. Although Captain Marvel was missing from the MCU between Captain Marvel (which takes place in the 1990s) and Avengers: Endgame, she is now active once again and ready to help save the galaxy.

Since her introduction, Captain Marvel’s power level has always been an issue. She is inarguably the most powerful Avenger in the MCU, meaning most of the series’ villains pose no threat to her. Consequently, increasing her strength even more in The Marvels doesn’t make much sense. She is already massively overpowered and having her be even more so could serve as a threat to the structure of Avengers 5, as it’s difficult to see how working within a team could be a benefit, as she can already take out most threats single-handedly. Having such a potent force fighting alongside the Avengers could make any other participants increasingly obsolete.

It’s hard to find a foe that Captain Marvel can’t beat. Even when it comes to Thanos, Captain Marvel can easily take down a fleet of ships without even breaking a sweat, as she did when she appeared during the climax of Endgame. Captain Marvel was absent from Avengers: Endgame for nearly the entire film, saying that she was taking care of some offscreen tasks on another planet. This was clearly an excuse to keep her away from the conflict because she could easily pummel any enemy into dust. In order for a film to have stakes, the protagonists must be challenged while trying to take down the antagonist. When the protagonists are the Avengers, a team of incredible superheroes, finding this balance is already hard. Throw in Captain Marvel, though, and it becomes nearly impossible. Giving her even more powers seems like the wrong direction to go if the writers are trying to solve this issue. It is possible that the next threat could be something that can’t be solved with punches, though. If someone like Kang was the villain in Avengers 5, Carol Danvers’ strength wouldn’t make that much of a difference. Kang can manipulate time, meaning he could do things like predict Carol’s moves or send an infinite army of Kang variants at the Avengers. Still, most of Marvel’s rogues’ gallery could easily be taken down by an ultra-powerful Captain Marvel.

The other big issue involves the concept of The Avengers. The point of every Avengers story is that a threat is so big that it requires Earth’s Mightiest Heroes to come together in order to take it down. Captain Marvel breaks the need for this teamwork, though. The Avengers has a diverse line-up in Phase 4, so some characters like Scarlet Witch and Doctor Strange may be helpful to Carol. However, characters like Shang-Chi or an expert archer have no point when one team member has the power of a god. Only having incredibly powerful members would prevent the film from being grounded, but having some less powerful members wouldn’t make sense. Marvel Studios may well find a way to balance it, but issues with things like Captain Marvel’s increased power will continue to be noticeable problems in the MCU, from Avengers 5 onward.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but I don’t think Captain Marvel is too powerful in the MCU.

Those things said, I want to preface my argument with a few key points:

Kevin Feige clearly stated that the MCU’s Captain Marvel is the most powerful hero we’ve seen thus far, my point isn’t going to argue that she isn’t the most powerful.
It was also stated that in Captain Marvel, she was intentionally given opponents that would allow her to showcase her fantastic strength. She was meant to seem more powerful in it, merely due to the level of opponents she was facing.
It has also been stated that there’s a good chance she’ll be scaled back in future encounters.
The previous point has already been somewhat established in Endgame, though Captain Marvel was there in the end, though she was stronger than Thanos, she wasn’t going to single-handedly turn the tide of the battle or event the fight against him.

The Important Question

I believe the important question here is: could any of the other Marvel superheroes performed similarly against her opponents? So I’m going to to bring up a few heroes and whether or not I think them capable.

Thor: Previous to Captain Marvel and the events of Endgame, Thor was one of the most powerful Avengers, if not THE most powerful (sorry Hulk.) We even saw, after he had gone through his own heroes journey, him taking out large parts of Thanos’ army including ships.
I believe Thor could have done similar to Captain Marvel against the same enemies.
Iron Man: Rest in peace. Iron Man has always been one of the stronger super heroes, not because of any specific supernatural ability, but because of his off-the-charts intelligence, and his almost limitless resources. Some say that Batman could defeat almost any opponent given enough time and planning, I believe that Iron Man fits in that mold.
I believe that Iron Man could have taken on Captain Marvel’s foes, albeit in a different style and with different circumstances.
Hulk: It’s already apparent that the Hulk was/is capable of matching just about anyone on strength at the physical level. Even though Thanos laid him out, the Hulk still got some brutal punches in and has fought powerful heroes like Thor to pretty much a draw. His primary issue is that he has no way to really fly. However, in his Professor Hulk incarnation it’s conceivable that he could create or modify some sort of suit to combat this problem.
I don’t believe ordinary Hulk could take on all of Captain Marvel’s foes. However, Professor Hulk is certainly capable.

I’m sure I could go on, but this is already a longer read than I expect most people to go through.

Conclusion

My conclusion? I think a lot was being made of the fact that Captain Marvel went through her opponents like a knife through butter. Every other hero on my short list has had to face much stronger opponents and thus struggled to succeed. However, as I laid out in my preface, this was by design.

The reality is that, while she may be the most powerful active hero in the current MCU, there’s little reason to believe that she’s overpowered (that is, too powerful) and I think a lot is being made out of nothing. We’ll see her strength challenged in future movies. I do think she’ll continue to show similar levels of power though. She’s going to face stomp a lot of lesser enemies, and only struggle against the main villains or other circumstances where the odds are stacked against her.

I refuse to acknowledge the sexism and misogyny on the other side. As blatantly insecure as they are, no argument is going to be able to be sufficient to their purposes. But I do believe there were valid concerns after the movie about her power level. My theory, my argument, is that, upon reflection, it’s really not quite so OP as one might initially believe.

In 2011, Captain America was ranked #6 on IGN’s 100 Greatest Comic Book Characters of All Time.

Biography

Steve Rogers was born on July 4, 1917th in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York, to Irish immigrant parents Sarah and Joseph Rogers. By the early 1940s, before America’s entry into World War II, Rogers was a short and thin art student who specialized in illustration. Outraged by the rise to power of Hitler, Rogers tried to join the army, but he was refused due to his poor physical condition. A U.S. Army officer looking for test subjects offered Rogers a chance to serve his country by taking part in a top-secret defense project, Operation Rebirth, whose goal was to develop means to create physically fit and strong soldiers. Rogers agreed to the study and, after a rigorous selection process, was selected as the first test subject for the Super Soldier serum developed by Dr. Joseph Reinstein, whose name was later retroactively changed to Abraham Erskine.

In the following comics, it was revealed that Rogers was not the first to take this serum. The night before the drug was applied to him, several military members of the project decided that the civilian was not a suitable candidate for testing, and secretly gave the unfinished serum to Clinton McIntyre. This made McIntyre a violent lunatic, so he was subdued and frozen. McIntyre was later revived as a deadly Protocide by the criminal organization AIM.

During Operation Rebirth, Rogers was injected with the Super Soldier Serum by injection and food. He was then subjected to controlled exposure to «Vita Rays» which activated and stabilized the serum in the body. Despite the difficult course of the rebirth, Rogers successfully endured the rapid transition from a weak physical form to the limit of human capabilities. The musculature and reaction were extremely developed. Erskine declared Rogers to be the first representative of the new human race, «an almost perfect human being.»

At this time, a Nazi spy showed up and shot Erskine. Since the scientist kept in mind the key features of the composition of the Super Soldier serum, it could not be reproduced. Rogers killed the spy and vowed to fight America’s enemies.
The US government, making the most of its only super-soldier, has transformed him into a superhero who serves as both a counterintelligence agent and a propaganda symbol against Nazi Germany’s head of terrorist operations, the Red Skull. For this purpose, Rogers was given a uniform in the colors of the American flag, based on the sketches of Rogers himself, a bulletproof shield, a service pistol and the code name Captain America. As a cover, he enlisted as a private in the infantry at Camp Lehigh, Virginia. As a youth, Rogers befriended teen camp mascot James Buchanan «Bucky» Barnes.

Barnes accidentally learned of Rogers’ dual identity and offered to keep the secret on the condition that he become Captain America’s assistant. Rogers agreed and began coaching Barnes. He met with President Roosevelt, who presented him with a new shield made from an alloy of steel and vibranium made with an unknown catalyst. This alloy is indestructible, but the shield is light enough to be used as a disc-like weapon that can return to its owner. The shield was so effective that the Captain forgot about the gun. During World War II, Captain and Bucky battled the Nazi menace both on their own and as part of the superhero team The Invaders, as chronicled in the comic book of the same name 1970s. In those days, Captain America became one of the most famous heroes.

It was later revealed that in the last days of the war, Captain America and Bucky were trying to stop the sinister Baron Zemo from destroying an experimental drone. Zemo launched the plane with an explosive charge on it. Rogers and Barnes got to the plane just before takeoff, but when Bucky tried to defuse the bomb, it exploded in mid-air. The young man was considered dead, and Rogers fell into the icy waters of the North Atlantic. No bodies were found and both were declared dead.

Late 1940s — 1950s

Captain America continued to appear in comics over the next few years, changing from a World War II era hero fighting the Nazis to one trying to defeat the US’s new enemy, communism. However, the character’s revival in the mid-1950s did not last long, and in order to explain the changes in the character, the events of the time were later re-explained, showing that many people were operating under this pseudonym.

The last of these other Captains was a man who dedicated himself to imitating Captain America and had his appearance surgically changed to resemble Rogers. What’s more, he also exposed himself and his protégé to a Nazi-obtained copy of the Super Soldier serum to become the new Captain America and Bucky, but they were unaware of the required component of the Vita-rays. As a result of the application, the raw chemicals began to seriously affect their minds, making them violently paranoid. After it became apparent that the two had gone insane, they were captured and placed in an unidentified cryogenic storage facility.

1960s — 1970s

Years later, the superhero team the Avengers discovered the body of Steve Rogers in the North Atlantic wearing a suit under his soldier’s uniform and still holding his shield. After he woke up, they put together that Rogers had been preserved in a block of ice since 1945, surviving in this state only due to his enhancement in Operation: Rebirth. The block began to melt after the Submariner, furious that an Arctic Inuit tribe was worshiping the frozen figure, tossed it into the ocean. Rogers accepted membership in the Avengers, and although he was far out of his time, his considerable combat experience made Steve a valuable addition to the team. He quickly became a leader and throughout the history of the team he constantly returned to this post.

Captain America was tormented by guilt for not being able to prevent Bucky’s death, a feeling that did not ease for a while. Although he took custody of the young Rick Jones (resembling Bucky), he at one time refused to let Jones assume Bucky’s identity, not wanting to be responsible for the death of another youth. After insisting that his hero finally get over this loss, Jones eventually convinced Rogers to let him wear the Bucky costume, but this partnership only lasted a short time: a disguised Red Skull pretending to be Rogers used the Cosmic Cube to chase Jones away.

Rogers is also reunited with his old military comrade Nick Fury, who is similarly well preserved due to the Infinity Formula. As a result, Rogers regularly flew missions for the S.H.I.E.L.D. security agency, of which Fury was chief executive. Through Fury, Rogers befriended Sharon Carter, an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., with whom he eventually began a romantic relationship.

Rogers later met and trained Sam Wilson, who became the superhero Falcon, the first African-American superhero in mainstream comics. The characters develop strong friendships and adventure companionships; at one time they shared the title of the series as Captain America and the Falcon. The two later encountered the revived but still insane Captain America 19.50s. Although Rogers and the Falcon defeated the fake Rogers and Jack Monroe, Steve became deeply concerned that the fate of his doppelgänger might befall him.

The series also dealt with the Marvel Universe’s version of the Watergate scandal, making Rogers so insecure about his role that he abandoned his Captain America identity in favor of another one called Nomad. During this time, several people unsuccessfully assumed the identity of Captain America. Rogers eventually re-accepted her after he came to consider that the person could be a symbol of America’s ideals rather than its government. Jack Monroe, cured of his mental instability, later adopted the Nomad alias. During this period, Rogers also temporarily gained super strength. He also learned of the supposed death of Sharon Carter.

1980s — 1990s

In the 1980s, in addition to the works of such illustrious artists as John Byrne, the series revealed the true face and full origin of the Red Skull. Rogers met law student Bernie Rosenthal, who became his girlfriend. For a time, he also took on Jack Monroe, the Nomad, as his partner. During this period, he also met the Diamond Snake. The heroes gathered by the Beyonder chose Rogers as leader during their time on the Battlerealm.

Longtime author Mark Grunwald explored numerous political and social themes, such as extreme idealism as Captain America battled the anti-Nationalist terrorist Flag Crusher and vigilantes as he hunted the deadly Scourge of the Underworld. He took the Demoman as his partner.

Rogers received a large backlog from his disappearance at the end of World War II and was ordered by a government commission to work directly for the US government. Already troubled by the corruption he faced during the New York Nuclear incident, Rogers instead opted to leave his identity behind and then took on the alias «Captain». Captain America’s replacement, John Walker, struggled to emulate Rogers’ ideals until pressure from hidden enemies helped drive Walker into a frenzy. Rogers reverted to being Captain America while a recovered Walker became U.S. Agent.

Sometime later, Rogers escaped the methamphetamine lab explosion, but the drug set off a chemical reaction in the Super Soldier serum in his system. To combat the reaction, the serum was removed from Steve’s body, and he began to constantly train to maintain physical condition.

It was later determined that the serum was not, in fact, a drug that would be metabolized from his body, but, in fact, a virus that caused biochemical and genetic changes. This also explained how the archenemy Red Skull, who at the time resided in a body cloned from Rogers’ cells, also had the formula in his body.

Due to his altered biochemistry, Rogers’ body began to deteriorate, requiring him to wear a power exoskeleton for a time, and was eventually put back into suspended animation. During this time, Steve received a blood transfusion from the Red Skull, which cured his condition and stabilized the Super Soldier virus in his body. Captain America has returned to both crimefighting and the Avengers.

2000s

Rogers revealed his identity to the world and settled in the Brooklyn area. After events Avengers collapse is back at work with S.H.I.E.L.D., Rogers discovers that Bucky is alive, having been rescued and used by Soviet intelligence as the Winter Soldier. Steve also rekindled his back-to-back-again-again relationship with an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. Sharon Carter, who discovered after his death that she was pregnant by him.

In the 2006-2007 «Civil War» crossover, Captain America opposed forced federal registration of all superpowered beings, which he saw as an erosion of civil liberties for the superheroic society, and led an anti-registration faction and resistance movement. He became a fugitive and confronted the pro-registration group’s heroes, including his former friend Iron Man. He took on the alias of «Brett Hendrick», a mall security guard, so the government couldn’t detect him. As the war progressed, Cap enlisted the support of several figures he wouldn’t team up with under normal circumstances, such as the Punisher and the Kingpin.

Captain America fought Iron Man during the climactic battle, and Cap had victory in his hands when a group of civilians tried to stop him. Deciding that he was endangering the people he swore to protect, Rogers turned himself in to the authorities and ordered the anti-registration forces to stop. As Cap was led away in handcuffs, the Punisher picked up Captain America’s discarded mask.

Death and aftermath

Following his surrender, Rogers faced numerous criminal charges. When Steve was brought to the federal courthouse, a sniper shot him in the back. In the ensuing chaos, he received three more bullets to his stomach and chest. Rogers was taken to the hospital, where he died. The assassination orchestrated by the Red Skull involved Bone Cross as a sniper and posing as a S.H.I.E.L.D. psychiatrist. Dr. Faustus, who gave Sharon Carter a hypnotic order to shoot Rogers at a crucial moment.

The superhero community was shocked by the murder. The Punisher has temporarily donned a costume similar to Captain America’s while the Winter Soldier and Wolverine seek to avenge his death. His shield was stolen by the Winter Soldier and the Punisher provided him with a Steve Rogers mask. Captain America was publicly interred at Arlington National Cemetery, under a monument erected in his honor. The body in the graveyard is fake: Tony Stark, accompanied by Hank Pym and Janet van Dyne, returned Rogers’ body to the Arctic, where Steve had been found years before. Namor attended a small private ceremony and swore that no one would disturb the place. Stark received a letter containing Rogers’ final wishes: Stark must save Bucky, and despite his death, the world still needs Captain America.

However, as it turned out later, the weapon belonging to the Red Skull, from which Rogers was shot, was not quite ordinary. It appeared that Rogers had been shot, but in fact the shot broke his synchronization with the passage of time (meaning he was kind of out of time), forcing him to relive moments from his past. The Red Skull eventually put his master plan into action: to return Captain America to the present, but in such a way that the consciousness of the Red Skull himself was in his body. However, Rogers was able to defeat the Red Skull inside his mind, depriving him of his body. Upon discovering upon his return to life that Bucky was now filling the role of Captain America, Rogers gave him his blessing to bear his name and shield. He was no longer going to act as Captain America, but donned his costume once again — to lead the Avengers against Norman Osborn, a criminal and psychopath who found himself at the head of the Initiative, the US army of superhumans. After defeating Osborn and revealing his true colors to the public, Rogers accepted the president’s offer to replace Osborn as America’s superhero executive.

In his new position, he began by assembling a new core team of Avengers, as well as giving the go-ahead to Luke Cage and his formerly outlaw team of Avengers. Rogers also decided to create a secret team, the Secret Avengers, whose main task was secret missions that should not be made public. The Secret Avengers under his leadership included Ant-Man (Eric O’Grady), Moon Knight (Mark Spector), Valkyrie, Black Widow (Natasha Romanoff) and Beast (Hank McCoy).

2010s

After the events of Dark Reign and The Siege, Steve Rogers returned as one of the main characters in the Age of Heroes story arc. The President of the United States returned his civil rights to him and appointed him head of security, thereby replacing Norman Osborn. The superhero registration law has been repealed and Rogers is resurrecting the Avengers. Rogers also becomes the leader of the Secret Avengers, who specialize in top-secret operations.

Marvel is currently looking to bring back the role of Captain America to Steve Rogers by resetting the comic book numbers and focusing more on the events of the upcoming superhero movie.

Other versions

Ultimate Marvel

In this version, Rogers’ story almost completely matches the classic. He participated in a special operation to neutralize the secret weapons of the Nazis in 1943. Trying to stop the rocket, he jumped on it and blew it up over the Pacific Ocean. In 2000, Nick Fury and Tony Stark find him and offer him to head the Ultimates project. After a series of successful operations, Steve begins an affair with the Wasp, but when she is killed by the Bubble, Rogers withdraws into himself and completely focuses on work.
Ultimate Captain America is more violent and unpredictable than the classic. He is also more patriotic and most often follows orders without thinking about the consequences.

During the events of the New US Civil War in the Ultimate universe, Captain America becomes the new President of the United States of America.

Marvel Zombies (Earth-2149)

The superhero Sentinel, infected with a mysterious virus, got into the universe of Earth-2149. The Avengers, led by Captain America (here called Colonel America), arrived at the crash site. As a result, the hero was infected with a virus and killed by the Red Skull.

Abilities

Captain America does not possess superhuman powers, although as a result of the Super Soldier serum and treatment with Vita Rays, he was transformed from a weak youth into a «perfect» model of human development and condition. Strength, endurance, agility, speed, reaction and strength of the Captain are at the highest levels of natural human potential. Rogers’ body has been found to regularly produce the super soldier serum; she doesn’t disappear.

The formula enhanced all of his metabolic functions and prevented fatigue poisons from accumulating in his muscles, giving him stamina far beyond that of a normal human. This explains many of his extraordinary feats, including the 500kg bench press and the mile-per-minute run. Moreover, his enhancements are the reason why he was able to survive being frozen for decades. Rogers is also unable to get drunk from alcohol and is immune to many diseases as he heals faster than a normal human.

Rogers’ combat experience and training make him an expert tactician and an excellent field commander: his associates periodically obey his orders in battle. Rogers’ reactions and feelings are also exceptionally sharp. He is a master of many martial arts. Years of practice with his indestructible shield has made Steve able to aim and throw it with almost unerring accuracy. His skill with a shield is such that he can attack multiple targets in succession with a single throw, or even perform a boomerang throwback to attack an enemy from behind. In the comics, other experienced fighters consider him one of the best hand-to-hand combatants in the Marvel Universe.

Rogers has extensive military training and has often been shown to be familiar with the long-term, highly classified operations of the US Department of Defense. He is an expert in military strategy, survival, acrobatics and various vehicle management. Despite his high profile as one of the most popular and recognizable superheroes, Rogers also has extensive knowledge of the spy society, largely through his long association with S.H.I.E.L.D. comic book drawing, education (high school history) and law enforcement.

Animated Series

Captain America appears in the 1966 Marvel Super Heroes animated series.

In the 1981 Spider-Man animated series, he appeared in the episode «The Capture of Captain America». He was voiced by George Disenzo.

In the animated series Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends (1981). He appeared in two episodes of this series, «7 Little Superheroes» and «Kingpin’s Pawns», where he was again voiced by George Disenzo.

In the 1992 X-Men animated series, voiced by Laurence Bain, who also voiced Cable and Eric Red. Captain America appeared in the episode «Old Soldiers». He is an American agent sent along with the Canadian Wolverine to rescue a scientist kidnapped by the Red Skull and the Nazis. He is only present in the episode in flashbacks along with Wolverine. An alternate version of Captain America appeared in the episode «One Man’s Worth».

Captain America appears in the animated series 1994 «Spider-Man», he was voiced by David Hayter. He first appeared in the episode «Cats». Appeared in three episodes of The Forgotten Six Warriors. In the episode «Secret Wars», Captain America was one of the heroes that Spider-Man chooses to fight against the villains.

Captain America appears in the Fantastic Four animated series.

In 1999’s « The Avengers: Always Together «, Captain America appears in the episode «Team Decision».

Captain America (along with Nick Fury) appears in the X-Men: Evolution episode «Operation Rebirth». In this episode, he is turned into a super soldier during World War II.

Captain America appeared in the first episode of the Black Panther animated series, voiced by Adrian Pasdar. He travels to Wakanda during World War II in search of Nazi invaders, where he encounters the Black Panther.

Captain America appears in The Super Hero Squadron, voiced by Tom Kenny. On this show, he is seen as a leader who will often talk about 1930s and 1940s, and sometimes even forgets that there are no more heroes in the 1940s («If this is Roosevelt calling, tell him that I’m not there»).

Captain America featured in The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, voiced by Brian Bloom. His frozen body is initially found by the Avengers in «The Living Legend», and he joins the team at the end of the episode. In the season one finale, in the episode «A Day Like No Others», Captain America is captured and replaced by a Skrull. In Season 2, in the episode «Prisoner of War», Captain America is shown on a Skrull ship that has been there for two months, after which Captain America frees himself and helps the other captives escape the Skrull ship. In the episode «Secret Invasion», Captain America returns to Earth and assists the Avengers in their battle against the Skrulls. In the episode «Code Red», Iron Man officially makes Captain America the leader.

Captain America «The Great Spider-Man» appears, voiced by Roger Craig Smith. In «Not a Toy», he joins forces with Spider-Man to get his shield back from Doctor Doom. He has a cameo in an episode of Guardians of the Galaxy, where he is voiced by Chris Cox.
