In addition to ray tracing performance, we will evaluate the possible fps on modern video cards. Of course, the focus will be on new graphics cards from AMD and NVIDIA.

Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was developed by Treyarch and Raven Software. The engine «IW Engine» of its own design is used, which in Call of Duty: Black Ops has already received version 3.0. What changes and improvements have occurred in the new version of the engine is not reported. The previous version also used ray tracing to calculate shadows and scene lighting. Reflections in this case are not calculated through ray tracing, developers use classic reflections in screen space. nine0003
But first, let me give you the game settings.
It’s interesting that you can set separate rendering and display resolutions. Therefore, inside the game, scaling both «up» and «down» is possible. You can disable V-Sync. You can set different quality textures and models, as well as install HD textures and models that will be downloaded directly through the Battle.net client. Reflections in the game are implemented through Screen Space Reflections.
Even without ray tracing, you can choose the quality of lighting and shadows. Tracing is used to calculate shadows from the sun, local shadows (or rather, contact shadows) and lighting the scene. Below we will look at the impact of some settings on performance. nine0003
Left — very low quality, right — low quality.
Left — medium quality, right — high quality.
Ultra quality. nine0385
We first tested with the GeForce RTX 3080 Founders Edition and Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics cards on the system we use to test the graphics cards. The goal was to evaluate the impact of quality settings on performance. Above are screenshots with different quality settings.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War — quality modes
3.840 x 2.160 — Raytracing off

More is better
nine0003
Changing the quality of textures and models leads to a very slight change in the performance of both video cards, up to 10%. The settings are not the most important in terms of performance, but they significantly affect the quality of the picture. Therefore, we recommend playing at Ultra quality.
DXR ray tracing
Ray tracing can be set to Off, Medium, High, and Ultra. The screenshots below show the differences.
nine0002 Left — tracing disabled, right — medium DXR quality.
Left — high quality DXR, right — Ultra DXR.
Since it is difficult to see the difference in different quality modes, we have made additional comparisons.
nine0002 Left — tracing disabled, right — Ultra DXR quality.
Left — tracing disabled, right — Ultra DXR quality.
Left — tracing disabled, right — Ultra DXR quality. nine0385
Left — tracing disabled, right — Ultra DXR quality.
Left — tracing disabled, right — Ultra DXR quality.
When comparing screenshots, it makes sense to pay attention to very bright areas that are darkened by ray tracing. Static shadow maps can’t show all the details, and ray tracing gives a much more realistic representation. nine0003
The contact shadows of objects lying on a table or hung on a wall are also clearer and more realistic. They are calculated depending on the angle of incidence of the light and the distance to the light source, that is, dynamically. All screenshots can be downloaded in full resolution without compression here.
Below is the effect of DXR settings on performance.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War — DXR modes
3.840 x 2.160 — Ultra
Frames per second
More is better
Keep in mind that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War was developed in collaboration with NVIDIA, so optimizations were made during development. Apparently, there are no optimizations for AMD video cards yet.
NVIDIA video cards lose about a quarter to a third of performance after enabling DXR. On AMD video cards, in the worst case, the drop occurs twice. The GeForce RTX 3080 with full Ultra DXR effects is faster than the Radeon RX 6800 XT with the lowest DXR quality settings. nine0003
DLSS
Deep Learning Super Sampling can only be enabled on NVIDIA GPUs. Below are screenshots with different DLSS settings: Quality, Balanced, Performance, and Ultra Performance. And also without DLSS.
Left — no DLSS, right — DLSS in quality mode.
nine0002 Left — balanced DLSS mode, right — performance.
Ultra performance DLSS mode
Between the «Quality» and «Balanced» options, we did not notice a noticeable difference in the picture. Unless in the productive mode the quality is slightly reduced. In ultra-productive mode, the quality degradation effect becomes even more pronounced. In the archive, you can download uncompressed screenshots in full resolution in order to more thoroughly consider the differences. nine0003
Let’s see what effect DLSS will have on performance:
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War — DLSS modes
3.
840 x 2.160 — Ultra — GeForce RTX 3080 FE
Frames per second

«Quality» DLSS mode allows you to increase fps by 50%. In balanced mode, the increase is already 80%. In performance mode, the frame rate doubles. And in ultra-performance mode, it becomes more than twice as large. nine0003
Ampere vs. Big Navi
Now let’s compare the performance of AMD and NVIDIA GPUs with and without ray tracing and DLSS (NVIDIA only). We ran tests at three resolutions.

The GeForce RTX 3090 was predictably the leader in all three resolutions. The Radeon RX 6800 XT outperformed the GeForce RTX 3080 at 1080p and 1440p, but in 4K rival NVIDIA once again took the lead. The Radeon RX 6800 has always been faster than the GeForce RTX 3070, but after turning on ray tracing, the Radeon RX graphics cards were losing ground dramatically, often losing ground to GeForce competitors. DLSS performed well only at 1440p, the performance of GeForce graphics cards with ray tracing returned to its previous level without RTX. As for 4K, GeForce RTX 3080 and GeForce RTX 309 graphics cards0 were able to get over 100 fps after activating DLSS.
Conclusion
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is still focused on fast-paced action. The plot plays a secondary role in it, gamers are interested in the successful completion of each mission, so that the next glavgad does not start a world war or launch a new pandemic. However, the purpose of the article is not to discuss the essence of the game, here we still focus on technology.
Although the game looks good without RTX effects, it does not require a lot of hardware resources. At 4K resolution, you can quite comfortably play on the GeForce RTX 2060 Super. However, one should distinguish between single and multi-user mode. The latter is usually more demanding. Graphics settings allow you to optimize performance without much sacrifice in image quality. In general, the game engine is pleasantly pleasing both visually and from a technical point of view. nine0003
Ray tracing effects are not as noticeable here as in games where they are used to calculate reflections. In this case, RTX is responsible for the shadows and lighting of the scene. But these effects have a positive effect on immersion in the game as a whole — at least when compared with some implementations of reflections. The test results speak for themselves, which allows you to evaluate the performance picture with different settings. If you plan to play with ray tracing, then NVIDIA GPUs will provide higher performance, and the fps drop can be compensated through DLSS. The Radeon RX 6800 and Radeon RX 6800 XT graphics cards deliver competitive performance without tracing.
