Call of Duty Warzone 2.0: Tips and tricks

Why you can trust Pocket-lint

(Pocket-lint) — Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0 is finally upon us, a long-awaited follow-up to the first Warzone, which saw more than 100 million players around the world drop into the game to duke it out COD-style. What better way to while away the days than with a free-to-play battle royale game, tied to an already dominant franchise?

  • Call of Duty Warzone 2.0 release date, trailer, gameplay changes, new map and more

While it’s brought some major changes on the gameplay side, many of the fundamentals are the same. Some of the tips below are therefore things that will still help if you’re going to drop back into Caldera when it returns.

We’ve dropped more times than we can count into the zone, practising and squadding up to figure out some useful strategies and tips that you can take into your own sessions. Say it quietly, we’re even winning a few games. So, here are our top tips for becoming a better COD Warzone 2.0 player.

1. Check the map before you drop

Your choice of landing zone is a key variable at the start of a match. The second you see that cutscene of the plane starting up, you can bring up the map screen for your match and see where the shrinking gas circle will start. That can help you to gain a sense of where people are more likely to land, and for where you’ll have to aim as it approaches.

  • Best PC games to buy: Fantastic games to add to your collection

It’s important that, as your confidence grows, you can tailor your tactics on this front. If you don’t fancy yourself in chaotic gunfights, maybe go more remote in order to get some solid equipment. Alternatively, go for the «trial by fire» approach and train yourself in fighting by seeking out crowded areas like the ever-popular Observatory. It’s up to you, but make sure you do pick a spot as a squad.

2. Pop and cut your chute to drop more quickly

Pretty much the minute the first Warzone went live, players figured out a cheeky way to get a bit of a headstart in a match. As you drop from the plane over the map, you can pop your parachute whenever you like to glide down more slowly. What people realised, though, is that you can actually cut your cord to dive again and re-pop your parachute as many times you like. Now most players use that to their advantage.

As you fall, popping your chute and then cutting the cords gives you a short speed boost, and throws you forward more aggressively, letting you cover ground more quickly to get to your chosen landing zone.

Activision

3. Don’t hoard your cash

Warzone has a cash economy at its heart. You’ll collect money as you run around and earn more for completing contracts (more on those later). Some matches you’ll hardly find any, while in others you’ll be swimming in the stuff soon enough. Either way, be sure not to sit on your cash too long.

In the battle royale modes, there are no bonuses for keeping hold of cash, so it’s really only there for you to use at the Buy Stations marked on your map. These let you buy a selection of killstreaks like Precision Airtsrikes and Mortar Strikes, as well as more armour plating and weapons. Our advice would be to be proactive in buying these rewards — you can’t take the money with you, after all, and a well-timed UAV could win you a gunfight really easily.

That said, if your teammates are dying a lot, you might want to keep hold of $4,000 to buy them back in, should they fail to win their redemptive Gulag fight.

4. Loadout drops are risky

Cash is important, then, but when you hit up a Buy Station it might be worth knowing what your priority should be. As we said, killstreaks can be a huge help, but the absolute top priority in your squad should be kitting yourself out with primary weapons. These are your custom guns and can be bought once at a time.

That’s like slipping on a glove in this context, letting you get in the groove with a gun you’re comfortable with, and all of the best players use it to dominate. Follow suit, if you can!

In terms of full loadouts with perks, these can only be accessed through the airdrops that arrive midway through a game. These are fiercely contested, though, since the boxes now work for any and all squads.

While you can obviously feel free to experiment with perk packages, too, we’d highly recommend running with one that includes Fast Hands by default, which will make weapon swapping and reloading quicker. You may also want an Overkill class to get two of your favourite guns at once.

Activision

5. Tweak your settings

Whether you’re on PC or console, there are some basic settings that you can tweak to help you perform better on Warzone 2.0 if you’re starting out.

Making sure you like your controller or mouse sensitivity is a big one to nail down, and we’re a big fan of having an ADS multiplier on — this means that the game reduces or increases your sensitivity when you’re aiming down your weapon’s sites, making it easier to track a target at distance.

Turning off all in-game music can be a huge help, too — the stressful music that comes in during endgame circles is a distraction that can obscure footsteps and other key audio, so bin it off entirely for total focus.

6. Pick up contracts whenever you can

If you’re daunted by the chunky price tag of a primary weapon, there are some good ways to earn cash and loot while you move around the map — contracts. These are marked out for you, and fall into a number of types: Bounties, Safecracker, Secure Intel, and Most Wanted.

Bounties mark out one player on the map for you, in a radius that gets smaller as you get closer to them, giving you a set amount of time to locate and kill him or her, and rewarding you if they die. Usefully, if you take out a bounty and someone else kills that player, you’ll still get a smaller reward. There’s no downside to picking one of these up — it’ll tell you where a player is and you get XP just for starting it.

Safecracker contracts mark out a selection of safes for you to find and blast open, with solid loot in them and a cash reward when you finish the set. Again, these are no-brainers, although they’re very popular targets at the start of matches.

Secure Intel, meanwhile, points you towards a piece of intel you have to pick up and transport somewhere to broadcast it. They require you to stay still for a little while, sometimes out in the open. They’ll tell you where the circle will next close, though, as a huge tactical benefit, and are favourites for experienced players, since you can stack that information up if you move quickly.

Most Wanted is a double-edged sword. You’re marked as a target for everyone on the map, for three minutes, but if you survive that time limit not only do you get a cash reward, any dead teammates instantly drop back into the game, whether they’re in the gulag or spectating.

The final word, though, is that these contracts aren’t just good for loot and money — they also give you a short-term objective to aim for, and are a great way of making a match feel more structured and less like guesswork. Frankly, blazing out in a game where you ticked off a couple of contracts is more fun than hiding in one place for 20 minutes and then dying.

Activision

7. Share your resources

We keep mentioning squads, and while you can play Warzone 2.0 in Solos mode, the aim is clearly still for most players to join a squad in the main battle royale mode. We’d encourage you to think tactically as a squad, therefore. If you’re sat with full armour and three spare plates, while your squadmates are down to nothing, drop some plates for them to pick up.

The same goes for cash and ammo — it’s often the case that only by pooling your cash can a loadout marker be bought, for example. This will encourage more selfless play in the long run.

8. Ping everything

Just like every other battle royale game since Apex Legends came out, Warzone 2.0 has a ping system to let you communicate with your squaddies. It lets you show them what you’re looking at or where you’re aiming for. This is an easy tip, but use it all the time, whenever you can, and map it to a button you’re comfortable with to make that easier. The more information you share, the further your squad will go.

Activision

9. Get creative with equipment

There’s also a range of field equipment that you can find around the map as you go, which can help you out in a pinch. Whether it’s a deployable bit of cover to block an enemy’s sightline, the Dead Silence field upgrade to make you quiet for a spell, or more, there are a lot of ways these can help.

  • Top PS4 games: Best PlayStation 4 and PS4 Pro games every gamer must own

One fun tactic that was quickly discovered involves the field drone you can find. If you use the drone, and a teammate has C4 equipped, they can actually drop the C4 on the drone to turn it into a miniaturised, mobile bomb.

10. Exploit the Gulag

One of the most refreshing parts of Warzone 2.0 is that death doesn’t have to be the end at all. Firstly, unless you die right near the end of the game, after your first death you’ll be sent to the Gulag, a mineshaft of a jail where you’ll await a two-on-two gunfight to earn re-entry to the battlefield. Even if you lose, your squad can still buy you back if they have the money.

If two of your squad go to the Gulag at once, though, you could be able to help each other out. Often our teammate has been able to give us callouts while they watched our gunfight, helping us to win then getting back into the game. Take every advantage you can get!

Activision

11. Play DMZ for a change of pace

Of course, Warzone isn’t just pure battle royale — there’s also DMZ, a totally different style of mode that sees you dropping into Al Mazrah with objectives to complete before making your way to an extraction point.

  • What is DMZ? Call of Duty Warzone 2.0’s new mode explained

It’s got a lot more AI enemies to contend with, and gives you a different set of priorities, making it a really fun way to switch things up if you’re struggling with Battle Royale.

12. Vary your squad size

Since the first game’s launch, there have been plenty of changes to playlists in Warzone already — we’ve got a Solos mode, if you fancy taking on Al Mazrah on your lonesome, and the launch of (the original) Season 3 saw the addition of Quads, raising your squad size to four. That’s perfect if you were always excluding a mate to get down to a three-man squad.

Still, though, if you don’t have four people and don’t want a random in your team, you could always change your Squad Fill settings to make sure that it’s just your friends, and take your chances with a smaller squad. It’s a disadvantage, for sure, but it can be fun to see how your tactics have to change under duress.

Activision

13. Watch for flares

You might not have realised it, but there are two situations in Warzone 2.0’s Battle Royale mode that send up a signal flare into the sky for nearby players to see. One is starting to broadcast at an Intel contract point, which sends up a white flare, while the other is buying back a squadmate, which sends up a red flare.

Keep an eye out for these signals as you move around the map, and you could get the drop on a team camping at a capture point or waiting for an unlooted squadmate to return to the fray.

14. Vary where you drop

It’s tempting and easy to find a couple of spots in Al Mazrah where you love to drop, whether because they’re generally isolated or loot-laden, but fight the urge to return to them too often. You’ll improve more quickly, and learn the map much faster if you switch up your drop points and occasionally go for locations you know will be busier. It’ll also change the rhythm of your play session, which we think is a good thing.

15. Beware the gas mask

As you enter the endgame of a match, a popular and powerful tactic is to hug the gas ring’s outer edge as it closes, picking off fleeing targets and staying just ahead of it yourself. This basically requires you to have a gas mask, so that you’re less at risk yourself, but be aware that the mask’s on-off animations can be disruptive (although they’re being slowly fixed bit by bit)

  • Best upcoming PS4 games to look forward to

The first time it happens to you, it’ll ruin your day, but your character pulling the mask on and off can interrupt your firing and reduce you to useless hip fire for a couple of seconds at key moments, so be sure to plan for it. It’s not necessarily something you’ll ever be able to reliably control, but if you learn to expect the disruption you’ll at least stop being quite so annoyed by it.

Activision

16. Look out for in-match events

The first Warzone used in-game events during matches to swap the pace up. There were plenty of possible events, but it would seem the list has slimmed down hugely for Warzone 2.0

So far, we’ve only seen a few events in our matches — namely the ones below.

  • Jailbreak: Everyone who’s eliminated respawns by airdrop — whether they’ve lost in the Gulag or are waiting for a fight.
  • Fire Sale: Buy stations suddenly get heavy discounts on many items, are restocked, and buying back fallen squadmates becomes way cheaper for the 60-second duration.

You might count the loadout drops that come in during every match, too. For now, though, these are the only big random variables you need to consider (as far as we know).

This superb collectable is also really fun to build.

17. Don’t lose hope

It might sound a bit trite, but we really mean it. Whether you’ve never won a game or haven’t for weeks, keep playing sensibly and making tactical decisions and the wins will come at some point. They won’t always happen how you think, either — we always remember one game back in Verdansk, coming off a hot streak of losses. We died early, got through the Gulag without any opponent after an anxious two-minute wait, dropped near the final circle with no gun and hid for five minutes before sneaking in, picking up a single SMG and firing three shots to finish off the last player standing, who never even saw us.

One kill, a lot of tension, and a huge slice of fortune, and we’re back in win-town. Warzone is a game of skill laced with a lot of luck and situational awareness, so don’t be disheartened if you’re on a bad run, basically.

Call of Duty Warzone 2 release day: Start time, how to preload, Al Mazrah map, DMZ

Warzone 2 brings a brand-new battle royale experience to Call of Duty. Here’s everything you need to know about Warzone 2’s release day including the launch times in each region, preload details, gameplay, the Al Mazrah map, DMZ mode, and more.

Warzone is set to receive a major evolution as Modern Warfare 2 Season 1 brings ‘Warzone 2.0,’ the sequel to the incredibly popular Call of Duty battle royale.

Call of Duty: Warzone 2 is the sequel to CoD’s hit battle royale, an entirely new free-to-play game that brings Warzone to the brand-new Al Mazrah map with new weapons, vehicles, Operators, the Gulag 2.0, and plenty of new mechanics.

For those interested in all of the details, here’s everything you need to know about the launch day including what time will Warzone 2 be playable in each region and how to preload.

  • Warzone 2 release time & date
  • How to preload Warzone 2
  • Warzone 2 map
  • Warzone 2 gameplay
  • Warzone 2 DMZ mode
  • Warzone 2 platforms
  • Will Warzone still exist after Warzone 2 releases?

Warzone 2 release time & date

Call of Duty: Warzone 2 will release on November 16, 2022, and will be playable at the following times:

  • West Coast US: 10 AM PT
  • East Coast US: 1 PM ET
  • UK: 6 PM GMT
  • Europe: 7 PM CET
  • Australia: 5 AM AEDT (November 17)

November 16 will also mark the start of Modern Warfare 2 Season 1 and bring the highly anticipated DMZ mode alongside Warzone 2 Season 1.

How to preload Warzone 2: Dates, time, download

Warzone 2 players can pre-load the game from November 14 so they can jump straight in when it goes live on November 16.

Just look for ‘Call of Duty: Warzone 2.0’ in your platform’s store and, because it’s free to play, you’ll be able to download it ahead of the full release. Modern Warfare 2 owners will need to look for an update that will download all of the Season 1 content for both games, making Warzone 2 ready to play at 1 PM ET.

Warzone 2 map

The biggest battle royale map yet, Warzone 2’s Al Mazrah takes players to Western Asia and includes classic maps from the Modern Warfare series.

While exploring Al Mazrah players will be able to find classic Call of Duty maps such as Showdown, Terminal, Quarry, Highrise, and Dome. The map also takes advantage of Modern Warfare 2’s swimming mechanics, so the rivers and ocean are all traversable via swimming or boat.

Warzone 2 gameplay

Warzone 2 is similar to the original Warzone but features some brand-new mechanics to shake up the gameplay.

You’ll still be fighting to be the last man standing in Warzone 2, but the way you loot, acquire loadout weapons, and fight in the Gulag have all received major changes.

Here’s everything you need to know about Warzone 2’s gameplay.

Loadouts return to Warzone 2

After the devs made a controversial decision to remove loadouts in the Call of Duty Next build of Warzone 2, they officially confirmed that Loadout Drops will be returning in Warzone 2.

According to the Call of Duty blog, there are three ways players can earn a Loadout or at least one of their custom weapons:

  • Shops – Players can use in-match Cash at the Shops (the new name for the Buy Station) to purchase their Primary Weapon from their created Loadouts.
  • Loadout Drop Public Event – Loadout Drops will drop into Al Mazrah in the middle of Battle Royale matches. However, these are not limited or assigned to individual squads, but instead can be accessed by any player.
  • Strongholds and Black Sites – Players can also earn their Loadout in the early game as a reward for clearing a Stronghold or a Black Site.

Looting & inventory

Warzone 2 will feature a new Backpack system, which is “fully integrated for DMZ and streamlined for Battle Royale modes.” Rather than loot sprawling out of eliminated enemies, players will now interact with a loot menu.

For a more detailed explanation, check out our guide on the Backpack system in Warzone 2.

The Shops

Each Buy Station in Warzone 2 will offer a “unique set of items for purchase in limited quantity.” This means that items like Killstreaks, Armor Plates, and more may not be available at every Buy Station, and they may run out of the item by the time you get there.

Players will still be able to buy their eliminated teammates back, all “within a new interface.”

Gulag 2.0

Since receiving feedback at the Call of Duty Next event, the devs have decided to keep the 2v2 Gulag experience in Warzone 2.

The Gulag has also undergone a massive change with Warzone 2, where players will now fight 2v2 with a temporary teammate. Each player will spawn with a predefined loadout, which at launch will either be a “Pistol or a Shotgun, a Lethal Grenade, and a Tactical Grenade.”

More effective weaponry and gear can be found towards the center of the Gulag map, but be careful, as the other team as well as the AI Jailer will be on the lookout.

Warzone 2’s Gulag features a Jailer, who “will appear in the middle of the match to help speed up combat.” If this AI is killed, all four Operators return back to Al Mazrah, offering a dilemma: “Do both Duos agree to wait and fight this powerful enemy together, or does one team get greedy and try to go for the elimination victory?”

If players take too long to either kill each other or the Jailer, all Operators will lose as the Overtime feature has been removed.

AI, Strongholds & Black Sites

Warzone 2 players can also find AI in three places across the map: Strongholds, Black Sites, and the Gulag.

Strongholds and Black Sites offer objectives that if complete, can reward players with a Custom Loadout and more. Players will need to enter a Stronghold and find and disarm a bomb, which will then earn them a key to a Black Site and their Custom Loadout.

Other teams who stumble across a completed Stronghold will have to “eliminate a specific number of defenders (AI or players)” to earn their loadout, but not a Black Site Key.

Black Sites are more dangerous than Strongholds, but they “offer a permanent Weapon Blueprint reward and even more valuable in-match items for those who clear it out.”

Warzone 2 vehicles, fuel & Gas Stations

Warzone 2 brings back a host of vehicles from the original, as well as some new wheels. Check out the full roster of vehicles below.

  • ATV: Nimble three-seater with little protection
  • UTV: All-terrain lightweight four-seater.
  • Hatchback: Four-door civilian vehicle without any significant protection.
  • SUV (Standard): All-terrain civilian 4×4 with a boxy frame.
  • GMC Hummer EV: All-electric supertruck engineered for off-road.
  • Cargo Truck: Large industrial vehicle with a flatbed.
  • Light Helo: Twin-engine light helicopter for rapid traversal and combat support.
  • Heavy Chopper: Heavily armored search-and-rescue helicopter.
  • RHIB: Maneuverable tactical boat designed for Special Forces.
  • Armored Patrol Boat: Reinforced aquatic vehicle with mounted .50 Cal machine guns.

The brand-new Warzone experience also brings brand-new mechanics for vehicles, as players will now have to manage fuel, as vehicles will no longer have unlimited gas. “Vehicles can be refilled either with Gas Cans found around the map or at Gas Stations.”

These new Gas Stations will also allow players to repair vehicles, restoring their health. Players can also repair flat tires at Gas Stations or on the go by interacting with the busted tires manually.

Aquatic Combat

Operators in Warzone 2 can now interact with water, whether that’s by actually swimming or hopping into a boat. Only Sidearms, melee weapons, and Lethal and Tactical Equipment can be used while submerged in water, so pick your aquatic battles carefully.

Circle Collapse

In Warzone 2, the devs have decided to change the way the traditional battle royale zone works, by introducing three circles instead of one. Now, there will be three safe zones for teams to settle, all eventually collapsing into one zone.

Proximity Chat

Warzone 2 will also feature Proximity Chat, a highly requested feature that will bring more immersion and communication to the game.

This means that “any in-game chatter can be picked up by any other squad,” so be careful if you’re trying to be sneaky, as you might just give your position away to enemies lurking around.

Assimilation

“In squad-based DMZ modes, as well as special Battle Royale playlists, you have the choice to join up with enemy Operators and form a larger squad.”

Interrogation

New to Warzone 2, players will be able to interrogate other downed enemy players in squad-based modes for intel on their remaining squadmate’s locations.

Third-Person playlist

Coming in Season 1 of Warzone 2, players will be able to experience the battle royale in third-person: “This shift in perspective could completely change the Battle Royale fundamentals in Call of Duty, allowing for different visibility tactics and an altered, but still action-packed gameplay feel. Modern Warfare II owners can already get a taste of Third-Person now through the game’s Multiplayer.”

Third-Person Playlists will be introduced into the Battle Royale weekly rotation during Season 1.

RICOCHET anti-cheat

Furthermore, Call of Duty devs have confirmed that the RICOCHET anti-cheat system will be available in both Modern Warfare 2 and Warzone 2 at launch. This should provide a fresh opportunity for players looking to play a cheater-free battle royale from the start.

Warzone 2 DMZ mode

Arriving with Warzone 2 on November 16 is the new extraction-style mode called DMZ.

This mode is an “open-world, narrative-focused extraction mode where Operator squads have free rein to complete faction-based missions, take on additional side objectives, engage with enemy Operators or AI combatants, and search for valuable items, all while fighting to survive toward exfiltration.”

If you’d like a more in-depth guide to this mode, check out our dedicated guide to DMZ.

Warzone 2 platforms

Warzone 2 will be released on both current and last-gen consoles, as well as Battle. net and Steam for PC. Following in Modern Warfare 2’s footsteps, Warzone 2 will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC.

Activision confirmed the news on June 8 as they look to provide a wide-reaching experience across both titles.

What happens to Warzone after Warzone 2 releases?

Activision have confirmed that Warzone will continue to exist after Warzone 2 is released: “Warzone will continue as a separate experience that will include a continuation of player progression and inventories within that Warzone experience.”

On November 16 the original Warzone will disappear and it will return as Warzone Caldera on November 28 without Rebirth Island and Fortune’s Keep.

For more details, check out our piece on what’s happening to Warzone after Warzone 2 releases.
