With its distinctive hand-drawn cartoon art style, Borderlands is an odd candidate for a remaster because it’s look is frankly hard to improve upon. It looked great in 2009, and it still looks great nearly 10 years later as a slightly brighter experience with better, steadier framerate and a few minor tweaks. That’s both good and somewhat disappointing: On the one hand, it reconfirms that Borderlands still looks and plays the part a decade later. On the other, it means there’s little reason to return if you’ve already completed the first adventure on Pandora.

Those with keen eyes may be able to see a difference, but switching between Ultra and High settings on PC seemed like a wash to me. There’s unfortunately no HDR support here, but the console versions will have it (we haven’t gotten our hands on those yet), along with 4K resolutions on PS4 Pro and Xbox One X. That might add vibrancy to the environments, structures, characters, and weapons, but the graphical style didn’t necessarily need a refresh anyway. Consoles do benefit from 60fps gameplay, though, and the PC version is a free upgrade for owners of the original.Loading

As the cheeky Game of the Year Edition name suggests, this remaster package contains all of the DLC – including my personal favorite expansion of any Borderlands game, The Secret Armory of General Knoxx. It also adds four-player split-screen co-op on consoles (still not for PC, sadly), up from the original’s two, at the cost of reduced framerate. And of course, the main campaign still holds up thanks to its solid variety of missions, engaging baddies, and a whole lot of still-very-funny Claptrap humor. I enjoyed tinkering with my build and trying out new loot as if I was playing it for the first time all over again.

The addition of the Borderlands 2-style minimap is extremely welcome.

Other improvements have been made which help to modernize the original in some respects. First and foremost, the addition of the Borderlands 2-style minimap is extremely welcome. I remember having to constantly rely on the compass, only to realize that the road had forked and my destination was only reachable by zigzagging and backtracking. Not having to pull up the full map in the menu to ensure you’re heading the right way makes a positive difference in the general flow of the missions. Inventory management is also better because you can mark weapons as junk and sell them in bulk at vending machines, while locking them helps you avoid accidentally dropping or selling stored gear that you wanted to hold onto. It’s also really nice to not have to manually pick up ammunition and money on the ground, though you still have to manually grab both from chests and lockers. The remaster also adds six new legendary weapons, but none of them dropped during the 20 hours I played so far (which is normal, since high-end items usually show up later).

Every IGN Borderlands Review

One big letdown is that while Gearbox promised the notoriously lame bullet-sponge final boss had been updated to be a cooler and more challenging fight, The Destroyer is still pretty lame. The massive creature with purple tentacles and a giant eye presented little challenge to begin with, but now even though I entered the mission at level 32 I single-handedly killed The Destroyer with an Eridian Rifle and SMG in just under a minute. Those were my weaker weapons, too, as I had run out of Combat Rifle ammo. The Destroyer died so quickly that I didn’t even have to worry about its tentacle attacks – I simply repeatedly shot its eye, and that was that. Perhaps The Destroyer is more challenging in playthrough 2, but the first is a disappointing pushover.

LoadingThere are a couple of other perks, such as the addition of SHiFT code support, which gives anybody who’s played Borderlands 2 or The Pre-Sequel on current-gen consoles or PC get 75 Golden Keys and two of the new weapons for Game of the Year Edition. Plus, the four original Vault Hunters now have five different heads each to choose from. Even though you rarely get to see your own face it’s a nice feature for co-op, and seeing Soldier with a handlebar mustache is pretty charming.

Borderlands: Game of The Year Edition polishes up a game that already looked great and played well, so the upgrade to 4K isn’t a dramatic transformation. Improvements to navigation and inventory management remove some of the tedious moments that originally slowed things down, but the changes to the already weak final boss fight make it significantly easier, which is the exact opposite of what it needed. Of course, Borderlands’ campaign’s gameplay, humor, and charm hold up, which makes it a reliably good time, especially in co-op.

Description

Borderlands features four-player co-op, single player, and two-player split-screen on consoles. Borderlands is a first-person shooter that contains the ability to develop a playable character, inventory and other elements taken from the RPG. Players also have access to car battles. Dead enemies drop items that can be picked up.

History

In the distant future, several ships of the colonists went to Pandora, a planet at the edge of the galaxy. The colonists are depicted as people in search of a better life, as well as vast deposits of mineral resources that should be on the planet and that anyone can take — a kind of futuristic gold rush. Some time after settling on the planet, the colonists discover that there is practically nothing on the planet except for a few old alien ruins. Those who had money flew away, and the remaining population plunged into chaos and lawlessness. Some settlers seek to get rich quick by finding alien technology. Most others are just trying to survive. After seven Earth years on a planet moving in its slow orbit, spring begins to replace winter, and many terrible creatures awaken from hibernation.

A ray of hope dawned for the remaining colonists when a mysterious Vault was discovered in the foothills. The vault was said to contain many alien technologies and mysteries. The only problem was that the people who discovered the vault were completely destroyed by some sort of protective force. The only confirmation of their discovery was an interrupted radio transmission, which spoke of the greatness of the vault, but not its location.

Gameplay

Borderlands is a first-person shooter game that contains the ability to develop a playable character, inventory and other elements taken from the RPG, thus allowing Gearbox to call it a «role playing shooter». The gameplay and principles of building tasks are traditional for modern MMORPGs.

At the start, the player chooses one of the 4 characters in the game with their own unique skills and abilities.

Once selected, the character begins to receive tasks from NPCs, completing which he receives money, experience and items. By gaining experience, players level up their character, allowing them to develop and unlock new abilities in a skill tree that is divided into three different specializations for each character. For example, a Hunter can become proficient at shooting from behind cover, using revolvers, or using his favored pet Bloodwing to aid in kills and collect items. Players can allocate skill points among any of the specializations and can also spend a small amount of in-game money to redistribute the points.

Each character starts the game with two weapon slots and 12 inventory slots (weapons, energy shields, medkits), but later can get up to four weapon slots and up to 42 inventory slots. There are slots for energy shield, a grenade modifier, and a class module. Ammunition does not occupy separate slots, but their number is limited, which is fixable by SDUs. At first, the player can carry a small number of items, but inventory expansion modules will allow you to carry many more things. These modules can be obtained by repairing the broken Claptrap robots located in certain places.

One of the main features of Borderlands is the massively produced weapons and items created or found from defeated opponents, bought from in-game vendors. The game uses the «Procedural Content Creation System» to create weapons and items that can change their firepower, rate of fire and accuracy, add effects such as setting fire to an enemy or restoring the player’s ammo. This system is also used to create specific types of enemies that the player can encounter.

The game can be played alone or with two players via split screen on game consoles, and up to four players playing together in an online game. The game monitors the progress of the player, rewarding him and other active players. Players can take part in one-on-one duels, with a small amount of money if they win, or they can visit the arenas in the game world to participate in a 2v2 battle.

Borderlands is known for its distinct graphical style, which combines Unreal Engine 3 graphics with cel-shading elements such as edge rendering.

A significant drawback of the game is the weak storyline and monotonous gameplay typical of games like Diablo, which looks even more monotonous due to the small number of enemy models.

The ending of the game is similar to the ending of Half-Life: Opposing Force, the first game that brought fame to the manufacturer.

On September 16, 2014, the Borderlands game servers were moved to the Steamworks platform.

Weapons

Weapons of different brands do not differ much from each other, but there are still differences.

For example, the automata from Tedior and Vladof can differ greatly in their style of action. In the first case, the emphasis is on high damage and incredibly accurate shooting in short, fast bursts of 3 rounds. In the second case, it is a gun with a large magazine and automatic firing. Not in ranged combat. Deadly in close quarters. Sniper rifles have a major drawback removed in Borderlands 2, namely pump-action reloading, which significantly slows down firing. There is a unique type of explosive sniper rifle compared to other games. Dealing huge damage and possessing equally excellent accuracy, they become deadly weapons in the hands of even a more or less skilled sniper. Borderlands also features a separate revolver class, merged with the pistol class in subsequent games in the series.

Borderlands was generally well received by critics and received positive reviews, averaging 85.84% on Xbox 360 (according to GameRankings) and 83.76% on PlayStation 3 (according to Metacritic). Jeff Gerstmann of Giant Bomb gave Borderlands 4 stars out of 5, calling it a successful shooter, «where many other games inspired by Diablo, failed miserably», but criticized the game’s story, calling it «paper-thin» and the predictable intelligence of opponents . Charles Onyett of IGN found the game very enjoyable and gave Borderlands an 8.8 out of 10 and an Editor’s Choice award. He liked the «beautiful visuals, true RPG mechanics, and solid first-person shooter gameplay.» He also noted that fans of role-playing games would enjoy «managing items and hunting for treasure», but he did not like the lack of skills of the characters.

Since the game, according to Igromania magazine, is fully revealed only in co-op mode , it was named the «hidden» hit of 2009 and was awarded «Co-op of the Year» at the end of the year.

Sales

At the end of December 2009, according to the financial report of the publisher of the game Take-Two, sales of the game were estimated at 2 million copies. By February 2010, those numbers had risen to 3 million copies.

Borderlands 3 is set in the year 2864, with several ships heading for a planet at the edge of the galaxy: Pandora. Colonists are drawn there in search of a better life, as well as vast mineral resources, which are said to be on the planet and are free.

Some time after settling, the colonists discover that the planet is nothing but ruins left by the aliens. Some settlers seek to get rich quick by discovering alien technology, most others are simply trying to survive. After seven Earth years, the transition from winter to spring occurs, and many dangerous, terrifying creatures begin to emerge from their hibernation, making Pandora even more dangerous.

A beacon of hope for the remaining colonists appears in the form of a mysterious alien Sanctuary located on a mountainside. This Vault is said to contain vast amounts of alien technology and secrets. The only problem is that the people who discovered the Vault were completely destroyed by some kind of defensive force, and the only evidence of their discovery was a radio broadcast proclaiming the greatness of the Vault, but not its location. Stories of this wealth sparked a resurgence of interest in Pandora, and treasure hunters began looking for it to try and get the treasures of the Vault.

      Gameplay

Finally, on May 1, 2019, the long demo of Borderlands 3 was shown for the first time. The gameplay reveal starts with Claptrap, causing even more chaos and disaster.

At the quick change station, you can change your skin, clothing colors, new emotions, and adjust your abilities. Borderlands 3 definitely feels like the familiar gameplay we’ve come to love from the last two Borderlands games, which isn’t a bad thing at all.

      Game world

The game world of Borderlands 3 consists of five fictional planets, three of which have already been announced: Pandora, Prometheus and Eden-6. Movement between the planets is carried out on the spacecraft Sanctuary-3 (Sanctuary-3). Each of the planets is divided into open locations with many interactive and destructible elements.

Promethea is a planet in the Borderlands universe that could very well be the location for Borderlands 3 — Atlas Corporation found alien technology on it, which was then reworked to create more powerful weapons.

In the official game announcement trailer, we saw several other locations, including a large number of neon lights. It may well be individual planets.

      Development

Basic development details for Borderlands 3 came to light in late 2018 following a major leak and YouTube Inside Gaming revealing details about characters, customization, weapons, and more. The information was marked as «obtained from an unknown source.»

in 2019At PAX East 2019, Borderlands 3 was finally officially announced and since then we’ve seen plenty of videos and trailers giving us a glimpse of the final product with a September release.

      Soundtrack and music

Borderlands 3’s main composer and composer of music tracks (OST) is Danish composer Jesper Kyd, known for his work in the ambient style for many games such as the Assassin’s Creed and Hitman series, as well as many years of collaboration with famous game makers such as Activision, BioWare, Eidos, Electronic Arts, Konami, Microsoft, Sega, Shiny, Take 2, Treyarch, Plarium and Ubisoft.

      Characters

Borderlands 3 has four new main playable characters and we got to know all of them in the official trailer. As in previous games in the series, each character has unique combat abilities:

      Amara

Making a new addition to the Siren class, Amara offers a more combative approach to combat. Her action skill is to conjure six telekinetic arms for a powerful punch attack.

      FL4K

This binary robot, also known as the «Beast Master», belongs to the Hunter class and has a weak spot. His combat skill summons various beasts, of which we’ve seen Skag, Spider, and a mysterious creature that walks on two legs and carries its own weapons.

      Moze

Moze is a Marksman-class playable character in Borderlands 3. Mose, can accurately and accurately shoot weapons. But her most unique ability is the summoning of a large iron robot, which she calls «Iron Bear». The robot has a powerful fiery power, as well as durability. And in addition to Moze herself, her allies can also sit on her iron robot from above behind the turret located on it. This is a kind of tank, thanks to which you can successfully break through the crowds of enemies.

      Zane Flint

Much like Zer0 from Borderlands 2, Zane, known as «The Operative», plays in the Assassin class. His action skills use a drone that he sends into battle to help deal damage.

      Weapons

Some of the Borderlands 3 weapon information currently available:

      Jakobs — Bullet Ricochet

«Deal devastating critical hits on sensitive enemies, then rejoice when your bullets ricochet to other targets.»

      Atlas — Bullet Tracker

      • “Step 1: hit your enemies with the tracker marks.
      • Step 2: Unleash the smart bullets on your targets.
      • Step 3: Done! »

      Tediore — Pursuit Weapon

«Throw your weapon like a grenade to reload, then watch it chase the nearest enemy when the fully loaded version intercepts your hand.»

      Hyperion — Shield and Accuracy

«Aim for cover behind the weapon’s shield and keep your finger on the trigger for increased accuracy.
