What’s going on with Konami’s new Bloody Roar trademark?

Bloody Roar as a fighting game franchise has laid dormant for over 16 years at this point, but some fans now have their ears perked up due to some recent developments in the series.

Konami has now registered a new trademark for Bloody Roar in the United States for the first time, but what does that mean for the prospects of seeing a new release at some point in the future?

Well, it’s a bit complicated.

As pointed out by Bloody Roar superfan Jerimiahisaiah, the filing, which was first submitted in March this year, does appear to be explicitly tied to video game software which means that it’s probably unrelated to something like a pachinko machine or any other forms of media. That’s off to a pretty good start.

This is also the first trademark Konami has applied for with Bloody Roar since they acquired the original rights holders, Hudson Soft, back in 2012.

On paper, that could point to a new project for the oft-forgotten fighter being in the works, but that certainly doesn’t mean that one actually exists for a multitude of reasons.

Firstly, Konami could have been on the cusp of losing rights to the Bloody Roar property with their license expiring, so they simply could have filed just to keep their ability to publish the IP — despite the company never doing anything with it since they obtained all of Hudson’s games.

We saw similar filings from Capcom late last year for a bunch of classic titles which have also yet to come back in any menaingful way between Darkstalkers, Cyberbots, Power Stone, Dino Crisis and others.

There’s also the problem that Konami largely exited the console gaming market over the past few years, and their only new release in 2020 appears to be just Super Bomberman R Online for Google Stadia.

The argument can easily be made as to why Konami would pick Bloody Roar back up for a new game when other, more widely recognizable franchises like Metal Gear, Silent Hill and Castlevania still remain dormant as well.

If anything, an HD remaster or collection seems like it’d be the most likely route the company would take at this current time if Konami had already been approached by an outside developer to take up the task.

Bloody Roar began its life as Beastorizer in 1997 where it would see multiple sequels across the PlayStation, Xbox, Gamecube and PS2 where it would remain outside of a re-release as a PS One Classics on PS3/PSP.

The gameplay offered some unique mechanics by controlling Zoanthropes, half-human and half-animal hybrids that can transform between the two states during battle.

With the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X right around the corner now, perhaps Konami is reconsidering their stance on console development, but they’ve shown no real outward signs of change right now.

Eighting, the developers of the series previously, are still very much around having just worked on Pikmin 3 Deluxe, but FGC members are probably most familiar with their work on Tatsunoko vs. Capcom and Marvel vs. Capcom 3.

It’s certainly not impossible for a new entry or collection to currently be in the works, but it’s also still way too early to get our hopes up at all considering Bloody Roar 4 came out all the way back in 2004.

Konami just hasn’t forgotten Bloody Roar exists at the very least.

In 1991, Street Fighter II truly lit a spark that ignited many game developers and studios’ imaginations, one that began a gold rush of sorts for new kinds of fighting games. Standing above the crowd was the wholly original Bloody Roar.

When it first debuted in 1997, Bloody Roar was unique as its central mechanic allowed their fighters to completely transform into animal hybrids with extended movesets. Sadly, the last game in the series was in 2004 and the franchise has remained dormant ever since.

From King of Fighters XV to Persona 4 Arena making a comeback, with enough fan support, any fighting game can be resurrected for a new audience. Whether it is a new entry in the series or a port of an all-time classic, a good game will always have a fighting chance in the market.

This is why we think that it is time for Bloody Roar to make its grand return into the world of video games. Let the world once again battle it out as werewolves, werelions, and weremoles to see who among the roster was truly the king of beasts.

Beast Mode

Created by Eighting and Hudson Soft, Bloody Roar was part of the 3D fighting game revolution of the late 90s, being part of the same wave of games as Tekken and SoulCalibur. These were the games that transformed the fighting game landscape into what it is today.

Hudson Soft was known for their Bomberman and Adventure Island games, and Bloody Roar can be seen as their foray into the popular fighting game genre. Hudson Soft has since been acquired by Konami, who still holds the rights to the Bloody Roar franchise.

The co-developers, Eighting, on the other hand, is still around as a prominent third-party developer in Japan. Bloody Roar was the studio’s first fighting game, and they have since created notable fighting games like Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 and Battle Stadium D.O.N.

Given that it was both companies’ first major push into the fighting game genre, the idea to have each character essentially has two modes of play was a great way to stand out from their competitors, who were more focused on reimagining fighting game mechanics in 3D space.

Primal Roar

Needless to say, with such a wild concept as Bloody Roar, great character designs had to be made to accommodate its central gameplay mechanics. The main character of the franchise, Yugo, was like Kyo Kusanagi from King of Fighters, except for the fact that he is also a werewolf.

For the most part, that was the great balance that the developers had to strike between each game, where each character had to be viable fighters in both their human and bestial forms. Transforming into beast mode in the middle of a fight was always a highlight in every match, and was something that each combatant could look forward to.

Each game added in more and more unique fighters, with some highlights including Bakuryu the ninja mole, or Stun who turned into a giant insect. It lent an air of mystery to each fighter when players first boot up the game, wondering what cool transformation each character hid.

Though by the time the fourth game came around, it seemed that the dev team had to scrape the bottom of the barrel for some of the transformations. From a father whose tag team partner was his daughter that could turn into a puppy to something called The Unborn, the further the franchise strayed from the core concept of turning into animals, the less interested fans became.

New Blood

A fresh reboot like 2009’s Mortal Kombat or 2013’s Killer Instinct could do wonders for Bloody Roar as the transformation mechanic and anime-inspired art style will definitely be a hit in 2022 and beyond.

While it may seem that fighting game fans are spoiled for choice in this day and age, Bloody Roar can still stand out as its core concept of character transformations is still something that no other fighting game has.

If we could see a new reboot that gives a fresh start to the series as well as provides new characters that bring back the original’s sense of mystery in regards to each character’s transformation and moveset, then we might just have a hit game in our hands.

Of course, revamping the gameplay is sorely needed as well, one that doesn’t allow for the beast transformations to be the dominant strategy for each match and something that opens up more strategic play in regards to each character’s moveset.

Who knows, maybe Konami will surprise us all with a new Bloody Roar game in the future, or they could do the obvious thing and just turn it into a new pachinko machine.
