Things to play in February: Elden Ring, Dying Light 2, Horizon: Forbidden West

February can be called one of the richest in games in 2022. A lot of expected new products, continuations of already familiar and beloved series, as well as potential winners in the «Game of the Year» nomination, are released this month.

Major releases

Dying Light 2 (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S) — February 4 The main character, the Drifter, has to choose a side in an internal war for power.

The developers promise that every choice will lead to consequences and this will radically change not only the plot, but also the open world. There was more freedom in the gameplay, and it was decided to abandon some elements, such as firearms — in Dying Light 2 you will have to rely only on melee and the agility of the parkour hero.

The second part of Dying Light has experienced more than one transfer, and it’s hard to believe that it will soon see the light of day. The developers promised a lot of things, but you definitely shouldn’t worry about the technical part of the Polish product — most recently Techland showed the gameplay on the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles.

Sifu (PC, PS4, PS5) — February 8

The protagonist, a kung fu expert, must avenge the death of his own father to five bandits. He cannot die because of the magic amulet, but each death increases his age. The older the hero, the less health he has, but the more damage he deals. Upon reaching a certain age, the amulet will be destroyed, and the game will end — you will have to start all over again.

Battle mechanics erroneously resemble beat’em up (from the English «Beat them all»), but in fact is an attempt to repeat Sekiro: Shadow Die Twice. The player and opponents have a stamina bar, parrying blows allows you to quickly bring the enemy to the fatal stage and finish it off beautifully. This is a very difficult game, so be prepared to die over and over again, trying to get to the next boss.

Total War: Warhammer III (PC) — February 17

Already the third part of the global strategy about the fantasy component of the Warhammer universe comes out in February. Instead of the usual world and the squabbles of its petty inhabitants, players will have to fight for dominance in the Kingdom of Chaos! The gods Nurgle, Tzeentch, Horn and Slaanesh will oppose or aid the forces of those who wish to ascend and become part of the new dimension in every possible way.

One of the biggest innovations developers consider the ability to create a demon-prince with any appearance and a huge number of characteristics. He will become much stronger than his previous shell, but will also be affected by Chaos — like any other demonic spawn.

Horizon: Forbidden West (PS4, PS5) — February 18

One of Sony’s major projects this year is coming out very soon. The adventures of the girl Aloy in the post-apocalyptic world promise to be much cooler than in the previous part. She and her comrades will go to the West, where no man has gone before, and there they will meet new opponents — both in the face of people and machines.

In a recent preview, the author of IGN said that Forbidden West took into account all the errors of the original and corrected them, and the content of the world has become dramatically better. The same goes for story and side missions. The parkour system has changed, although it still doesn’t allow grabbing on all surfaces, and the grappling hook and glider (just like in Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild) have increased Aloy’s mobility.

Elden Ring (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S) — February 25 However, we ask you to refrain from pre-orders and wait for the release. The undisputed genius of Hidetaka Miyazaki added so many new elements to the familiar Dark Souls formula that not everyone may like it: a huge open world with a lot of activities, the ability to summon helper spirits that themselves kill opponents and bosses, the combat system has not changed much since Dark Souls 3.

I would like to believe that this time From Software will greatly surprise its fans, and will not release «Dark Souls in a new wrapper». All games of the development team are like twin brothers in terms of game mechanics, and Elden Ring even copies the style of Dark Souls. Will the project justify its popularity? We’ll find out soon.

Minor releases, re-releases, remasters

OlliOlli World (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Switch) — February 9 into a full 3D platformer. On his way, the hero will have to prove that he is the best skater of the best.

However, instead of the usual cityscapes, the player is presented with Redlandia — the skater land where the gods of this extreme sport live, and the country itself is incredibly colorful and even slightly frightening with its lurid atmosphere.

Crossfire X (Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S) — February 10

An online first-person shooter that was released back in 2007 and will reach Xbox exclusively in February. An exit to other platforms has not been announced and is unlikely to take place. The new version will feature a single player campaign from Remedy, the creators of Max Payne and Alan Wake. At first, two operations will be available, but they promise to add episodes over time.

Remember… (PC) — February 10

Ice-Pick Lodge, famous for its game «Pestilence», releases a new project. This is another statement (it doesn’t happen otherwise with this studio) about friendship, transience of life, nostalgia. But it is not yet clear whether the project will have some kind of gameplay. A set of mini-games for solving puzzles will not be enough for a modern player.

Assassin’s Creed: The Ezio Collection (Switch) — February 17

The trilogy about the legendary master assassin Ezio Auditore is finally coming to the Nintendo Switch — only it was not enough for a complete collection on the Big N consoles. Let’s hope that the quality of the port will be at the level of Assassin’s Creed III, where the Switch was presented with the best version available now. For cartridge lovers, we have bad news: only Assassin’s Creed 2 will be on physical media, and Brotherhood and Revelations will have to be downloaded separately. These projects will be activated during cartridge installation.

The King of Fighters XV (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S) — February 17 also «the best ever» in the series. 39 characters at the start is a fairly extensive roster, but, judging by the statements of the developers, the support for the project will be long-term, and fans will not be disappointed.

In addition, SNK Corporation promises an improved network code that will allow you to easily participate in battles with people from different parts of the world.

Destiny 2: The Witch Queen (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S) — Feb 22

The new Destiny 2 add-on seems to use the latest ideas from the Bungie studio. The development of the story with the goddess Hive Savathun reaches its finale. The once revered machine-god the Wanderer gave his blessing to the powers of the Hive, and now they, too, are immortal — as long as their Ghosts live. Guardians will have to cast aside faith in the good intentions of their god and speak out against him and his new protégés openly.

Gameplay footage showed new weapons (including a glaive), the throne world of Savathun, and crafting equipment. How convenient and transparent the latest innovation will work is a big question, because Bungie has never shied away from selling resources for real money (hello, transmogrification of armor in Destiny 2).

Monark (PC, PS4, PS5, Switch) — February 22

This JRPG is reminiscent of the Shin Megami Tensei series and its offshoot Persona in every way. The main characters are students of the academy, which was captured by an incomprehensible fog, and when they enter it, they turn into tough fighters. Using their Ego and the Essences subordinate to them, the protagonists need to stop the monsters in the fog in order to prevent this scourge from spreading outside the school. Will Monark bring something new to the already established genre from Atlus? Will SMT and Persona have a competitor? I would very much like to.

GRID Legends (PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S) — Feb 25

Ever since Codemasters was bought by Electronic Arts, fans of the GRID racing series have been tensed — and apparently for good reason. Already now, for pre-ordering the Deluxe edition of GRID Legends, players are offered a «mechanic pass» that allows you to upgrade your car faster and make your career path easier. A roadmap has also been drawn up for 4 large sets of scenarios that will be released after the main release. Hopefully released in 2019GRID, where attention was paid to monetization, and not to the development of the gameplay, at least taught Codemasters something, and they will correct their mistakes in the upcoming project.

Pocket Tarkov. Lost Light Review

Lost Light has gained fame as a mobile Escape from Tarkov, but this is not entirely true. NetEase, of course, peeped a lot from the hit from Battlestate Games, but the Chinese developers put a completely different hit — PUBG Mobile from Tencent — at the heart of the gameplay. The resulting remix of two well-known projects claims to be the best mobile shooter.
