If you’re thinking of building a PC on a budget, B550 chipset motherboards are the perfect place to start. Designed for the AM4 socket with support for AMD Ryzen series 3000, 4000, and 5000 processors, these boards support PCIe 4.0 expansion, M.2 solid-state drives, and component overclocking. We’ve found the best budget B550 motherboards to fit a range of needs, so let’s get started on your new Ryzen build.
Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite
Best overall
The Aorus Elite is the most feature-rich B550 board in this range. It supports DDR4 memory overclocked up to 4733MHz, paired with 12+2 phase VRM stages for improved cooling. An NVMe M.2 socket supports PCIe 4.0 or 3.0, and a 2.5G LAN port delivers fast network transfer speeds.
ASUS TUF Gaming B550M-Plus
Runner-up
This microATX board impressed Rich Edmonds in his review, with one PCIe 4. 0 x16 slot and another at PCIe 3.0 for expansion cards. Its 8+2 power phase VRM still manages a reasonable amount of overclocking thanks to large heatsinks, making the B550M-Plus a fantastic mid-range choice.
Gigabyte B550M Aorus Pro-P
Third alternative
A B550M alternative from Gigabyte, the Aorus Pro-P features a 10+2 power phase VRM with widened heatsinks to manage cooling during overclocking. An M.2 socket for PCIe 4.0 or 3.0 SSDs sits alongside a PCIe 4.0 x16 expansion slot for your GPU, and four DIMM slots for DDR4 RAM.
Gigabyte B550M DS3H AC
Best for Wi-Fi
If you’re looking for wireless connectivity, the DS3H includes a Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac) antenna and Bluetooth 4.2 support. Backed up with four DDR4 DIMM slots for RAM overclocked to 4733MHz with a 5+3 power phase VRM and hybrid fan headers for cooling.
MSI B550-A Pro
Best for M.2 SSD
With one MSI M.2 Lightning Gen 4 socket rated at 64Gbps and another at 32Gbps, the B550-A Pro is perfect for rapid OS boot times and faster loads in games. If you’re aiming to use onboard graphics with a Ryzen G CPU, note the older DVI port in place of DisplayPort.
ASRock B550 Phantom Gaming 4 AC
Cheapest choice
For the ultimate money saver, ASRock’s Phantom Gaming 4 AC still provides a PCIe 4.0 x16 lane for your GPU plus Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 4.2 wireless connectivity. Its 8-phase VRM can handle some careful overclocking, but it’s perfect for a stock budget build.
AMD components are well liked for their performance versus cost, making the AM4 socket a perfect match for anyone looking to build a gaming PC on a budget. The best budget B550 motherboards include as many features as possible without pushing the price overboard, just like the Gigabyte B550 Aorus Elite with its terrific 12+2 power phase VRM for careful overclocking. It packs the biggest punch in this range, next to the ASUS TUF Gaming B550M-Plus that performed well in our review.
None of these budget B550 boards detracts from the quality compared to some of the best motherboards around. The value in this chipset is an attractive way to save, considering you can pair it with a strong mid-range CPU like the AMD Ryzen 5 3600X as a strong starting point for a budget build. For those looking for the ultimate penny saver, ASRock’s B550 Phantom Gaming 4 AC brings Wi-Fi connectivity and still suits the Ryzen 5 3600X or above for a decent stock build.

Boards based on the B550 chipset are available in a wide range. Among the various models, you will find many interesting devices that, unfortunately, cannot be called affordable. By and large, everything is clear with such boards, because the test laboratory has studied a lot of solid B550 motherboards. But what about simpler and cheaper devices? ⇡#ASUS PRIME B550M-A
Interestingly, you will find three versions of ASUS PRIME B550M-A on sale at once. The simplest modification of the board took part in today’s testing, but you can also find such models as PRIME B550M-A (Wi-Fi) and PRIME B550M-A AC in retail. I think you understand perfectly how these «mothers» differ from the hero of the review.
ASUS PRIME B550M-A
We are dealing with a full-size mATX form factor board, which is good news. The first thing that pleasantly surprises is the layout of the board components, which is rated «excellent». This is especially noticeable if you use a video card with a dual-slot cooler in the system — now I will explain why.
If I install a video card with a three-slot CO in the stand, then no, it will not block all four SATA ports, but the SSD / HDD connection wire will be located right next to the graphics accelerator fans. Some adapters, as we know, also sag under their weight. Perhaps, together with ASUS PRIME B550M-A they will not use such monstrous video cards? It may very well be. Only with the release of new series from AMD and NVIDIA will cards with fat coolers become a part of gamers’ everyday life. Be that as it may, I recommend using a SATA cable with an L-shaped connector to connect the drive.
ASUS PRIME B550M-A lacks many of the attributes that more expensive «relatives» have. The main PEG port is not armored, the M.2 slots do not have heatsinks to cool the SSD, and the I/O panel does not receive a plastic cover or backlight. However, there are two M.2 slots on the PCB. The main one is located between the socket and the PCI Express x16 slot. This means that the SSD installed in it will not heat up from the video card, but will be blown by the processor cooler fan. But the second M.2 was less fortunate. Let me remind you that in the B550 boards, only one port for NVMe SSD is connected to the PCI Express processor lines and works in x4 4.0 mode when using Ryzen chips of the Zen 2 and Zen 3 generations. The second M.2 “feeds” the PCI Express 3.0 chipset lines and divides them with SATA 6 Gb/s connectors. In particular, it is precisely because of this that ASUS PRIME B550M-A has only four SATA ports on the board.
The motherboard is equipped with four 4-pin fan connectors. Connectors are divided into three groups. The location, in my opinion, was chosen very well, because it is in the area of the processor socket that they are most needed. The fans connected to the ASUS PRIME B550M-A can operate both in PWM mode and in DC mode, that is, the motherboard is able to control the rotational speed of Carlsons with three and four pins. True, the speed control curve in the BIOS can only be set for fans connected to the CPU FAN, CHA1 FAN and CHA2 FAN connectors.
ASUS PRIME B550M-A internal ports:
- 1 × F-Audio,
- 1 × TPM,
- 1 × COM,
- 2 x USB 2.0,
- 1 × USB 3.2 Gen1 Type A,
- 2 × Aura RGB,
- 1 × LED,
- 1 × S/PDIF.
Ports on I/O panel:
- 1 × PS/2,
- 1 × D-Sub,
- 1 × DVI-D,
- 1 × HDMI,
- 4 × USB 3.2 Gen1 Type A,
- 2 × USB 3.2 Gen2 Type A,
- 1 × RJ-45,
- 3 x 3. 5 mm.
The Realtek RTL8111H gigabit controller is responsible for the wired network in the device, and the Realtek ALC887 is responsible for the sound. The controllers are simple, but the audio path received LED backlighting, a pinch of audio capacitors, and channel separation across different PCB layers.
The ASUS PRIME B550M-A power subsystem has six phases, and the channels for the SoC component are dual. The following items are used:
- Controller — ASP 1106GGQW (this is a relabeled Richtek RT3667BE).
- Phase doublers — no.
- Mosfets included in one phase and responsible for the operation of the CPU — 1 × Vishay SiRA14DP and 2 × SiRA12DP.
- Mosfets included in the dual phase and responsible for the operation of the SoC — 2 × Vishay SiRA14DP and 2 × SiRA12DP.
The part of the converter responsible for the operation of the CPU cores is cooled by a medium-sized aluminum radiator.

ASUS PRIME B550M-A
You can read more about ASUS UEFI BIOS features here. Firmware PRIME B550M-A, of course, in terms of the number of overclocking options does not reach the absolute flagship — ROG STRIX B550-E GAMING. However, the board has everything you need to overclock the central processor at home — in terms of the set of voltages, it is practically not inferior to a much more advanced board. Unless there are noticeably fewer LLC levels here.
⇡#ASUS PRIME B550M-K
If you take a closer look, it will become clear how PRIME B550M-K turned out from PRIME B550M-A. Does the letter «K» in the name stand for this word?
ASUS PRIME B550M-K
Indeed, the K-version is very similar to the PRIME B550M-A — only the board lacks a number of connectors and other elements. That is why the review of the next B550-board, in fact, comes down to a description of the differences between ASUS devices.
So, the expansion slots, DIMM connectors, M.2 ports and SATA 6 Gb/s connectors were untouched, their location too. One 4-pin fan connector and cooling of the VRM circuit disappeared, and the converter itself became worse (more on that below). Some of the internal interfaces also disappeared, although the ports on the I / O-panel remained untouched.
In particular, the internal connectors of ASUS PRIME B550M-K are:
- 1 × F-Audio,
- 1 × TPM,
- 1 × COM,
- 2 x USB 2.0,
- 1 × USB 3.2 Gen1 Type A,
- 1 × S/PDIF.
All the same controllers are responsible for the wired network and sound in the device — Realtek RTL8111H and Realtek ALC887.
So, the VRM of the board has become worse, although we are still talking about a 6-phase device power converter. It’s just that in the ASUS PRIME B550M-K, the number of mosfets responsible for the operation of the SoC has become slightly smaller. Well, you can’t help but notice the lack of a heatsink for the CPU phases. Otherwise, the same components are used:
- Controller — ASP 1106GGQW (this is a relabeled Richtek RT3667BE).
- Phase doublers — no.
- Mosfets included in one phase and responsible for the operation of the CPU — 1 × Vishay SiRA14DP and 2 × SiRA12DP.
- Mosfets included in one phase and responsible for the operation of the SoC — 2 × Vishay SiRA14DP and 2 × SiRA12DP.

ASUS PRIME B550M-K
Interestingly, the firmware of the simplified board is no different from the BIOS of the previously reviewed PRIME B550M-A, although a less “fresh” version was available for the K-model at the time of this writing — 1202. And yet, ASUS’ signature is clearly visible: the manufacturer does not «cut» the functionality of the firmware of its devices, even very low-end ones. Another thing is that the potential owner of the PRIME B550M-K is unlikely to use even half of what is included in the ASUS UEFI BIOS. However, this applies to all motherboards without exception.

Intelligent noise reduction
for microphone
ASUS motherboards come with software that includes intelligent microphone noise reduction technology that works with 3. 5mm, USB or Bluetooth headsets. The algorithm, based on a deep learning system, extracts the user’s voice from the audio stream, filtering out extraneous sounds — the sound of keys, mouse clicks and other ambient noise. At the same time, the activation of this function does not create a large load on the central processor, which means that it practically does not affect the speed of the game.
