How to Change Your PS4 Profile Avatar

Is your PlayStation 4 avatar a bit on the boring side? Well, switch it up a bit with one of these easy methods.

It is boring looking at the same old avatar on your PS4 profile. Maybe a new avatar of your favorite character has dropped and you want that, or you just fancy something different.

It’s a quick and easy process to change your PS4 profile avatar, as well as add more avatars to your collection. Let’s dive in.

How Do I Change My PS4 Profile Avatar?

You can change your avatar via your PS4, phone, or computer.

Change Your Avatar on Your PS4

To change your avatar via your PS4, you need to head to the avatar selection page. There are two ways to do this:

1. You can go via Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Profile > Avatar

2. You can also go through Profile > … > Edit Profile > Avatar

As you can see, option two is the quicker one, but either works. Once you’re there, choose from a range of avatars across different categories. Then, select your chosen avatar and confirm your selection.

Change Your Avatar on Your Phone

If you want to change your PS4 profile avatar, but you’re away from your PS4, you can do so on your phone via the PS App, which is also great if you want to use PlayStation Messaging.

To do this, make sure you’re in the Play section of the PS App, then tap your profile, select Edit Profile (there might be a sign-in page here), then select Edit in the Avatar section. Choose the avatar you want to use and press Yes. This should automatically change your PS4 profile avatar.

Change Your Avatar on Your Computer

You can also use your computer to change your PS4 profile avatar. Simply head to the PlayStation website and sign in to your PSN account, click on your account icon, select Account Settings, then Profile, then select Edit in the Avatar section. Select and confirm your avatar, and then you’re good to go.

Just like with your phone, your PS4 profile avatar should automatically change.

How to Add More PS4 Profile Avatars

You can buy premium avatars on your PS4 via the PS Store.

Head to the PlayStation Store, select Add-ons, then Avatars. Here, you can scroll through and purchase any premium avatars that catch your eye. Any purchased avatars will have their own section in the avatar selection page, under Premium Avatars.

I’m a longtime PlayStation fan, but never really cared about customizing my avatar. In fact, I’ve only recently taken a break from gaming to tweak the look of my profile. The standard set of PSN avatars that Sony has is very limited. Of course, you can get more, but that means you have to buy. Anyway, I recently discovered that it’s possible to set your own image as your profile picture. nine0003

I’m not saying the PS4 isn’t the best console, it really is. But Sony’s main problem is the user interface. They tend to complicate things and treat important features like Easter eggs. This is the case with changing the default PSN avatar. Even though it is an extremely simple operation, changing your PSN avatar is counter-intuitive. What’s more, it can’t be done from desktop, although everything else can be done from PSN web.

To make things clear, below you have two different methods to change the default PSN avatar. If you have time, I suggest using Method 2 , which uses the PlayStation Companion app. This may take longer, but it will allow you to install your own image (for free).

Method 1: Change your PS4 PSN avatar

This work is usually done the very first time you set up your PSN account. But if you were as excited as I was, you probably missed the whole process. If you want to change your PSN avatar directly from your PS4 console, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your PS4 control panel. Once you get to the main menu, use the left stick to highlight Profile and press the X button to select it.
  2. In window Profile , use the left stick. to highlight the three-dot icon and select it using the X button.
  3. In the menu that appears, select Edit profile.
  4. You will now be faced with a list of settings. Scroll down and select Avatar using button X .
  5. Now we come to the selection part. You can choose an avatar from a list of more than 300 entries. Although it seems that there are many of them, in reality they are not. You can buy more, but they are quite expensive. Highlight an avatar with the joystick and press X to confirm your choice.
  6. An additional confirmation window will then appear. Select Confirm to continue.
  7. You have successfully changed your PSN avatar. You can confirm this by visiting your window profile .

Method 2: Using the companion app to set your own picture

If you want to set your own picture on PSN, the only way to do so is through the PlayStation Companion app . To do this, you will need to install an application from the Google Play Store, but it’s worth it. You can use the companion app to change your avatar as well as your profile picture, among other things. Let’s get down to business:

  1. First things first, download PlayStation Companion App from the App Store or Google Play Store.
  2. When you first open the app, you will need to enter your credentials and sign in with your PSN account.
  3. After you manage to login, click on your profile picture (upper right corner).
  4. From the drop-down menu that just appeared, press Profile .
  5. You will be presented with a new list of options. Click Edit Profile, then select Add Profile Picture from the drop-down menu.
    You can also change Avatar by clicking Change avatar . But if you add a profile picture, it will automatically replace the avatar.   6. You can now either take a picture or select one from your gallery. After selecting an image, press OK to confirm your choice.
  7. That’s it, you have successfully changed your default avatar to your own image. Please wait a while before checking your PS4 system because it takes some time for the changes to update.

You can only choose from a limited catalog provided by Sony. After that, you will be shown how the avatar and nickname will look for your close friends and everyone else. By the way, for close friends, you can put absolutely any picture on the avatar, the main thing is that it does not violate Sony’s rules. This can be done either through the Playstation app or through a browser. To do this, go to your account settings and change your profile photo.
