NVIDIA has already introduced a new generation of GeForce RTX graphics cards. However, existing 10-series models will still be on the market, especially since there is no replacement for the popular GeForce GTX 1060 or GeForce GTX 1070 (GTX 1070 Ti) models in the middle price class. Therefore, the mentioned video cards do not lose their relevance. In this review, we will look at one of the GeForce GTX 1070 Ti models, which not only satisfies the requirements of the average gamer, but still allows you to play at a resolution of 2560×1440. This is ASUS Cerberus GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Advanced Edition. nine0021

ASUS CERBERUS-GTX1070TI-A8G

The video card comes in a large box. On the front side of the package is the symbol of the series — the mythical dog Cerberus.

This model stands out for its large dimensions and massive cooling. Two large fans are used for blowing. The case is black with small red inserts.

Total length 27 cm. Video card thickness over two slots.

The back is covered with a metal backplate. There is an 8-pin power connector in the corner. There are connectors for SLI.

There are five display ports on the rear panel: two HDMI, two DisplayPort and one DVI.

The ASUS Cerberus accelerator is protected from disassembly by a warranty seal. I had to limit myself to an external examination. The shroud with fans is removed separately, and this allows you to evaluate the design of the radiator. The fans themselves have a diameter of up to 100 mm. nine0021

The cooler is a two-section heatsink with heat pipes.

Supports a flexible fan control system with the ability to completely stop them when idle. The fans start spinning up after the core temperature exceeds 55°C. This allows the graphics card to remain completely silent when running simple 2D applications.

The design of the heatsink is similar to the Strix graphics cards, but slightly simpler.

A direct contact system is obviously used, which follows from the presence of special channels for heat pipes. There are four tubes.

No separate heatsink for power node. A single design is used, the side section has a platform for contact with the supply circuit transistors. This will certainly ensure high-quality cooling of these elements.

To demonstrate the power system, you can use the illustration from the ASUS website. And this image is reminiscent of the Strix series models. If Cerberus has any simplifications regarding the older ASUS, then they are minimal. nine0021

You can see the marking of Micron 8BA47 D9TCB memory chips.

Factory clocks meet standard GeForce GTX 1070 Ti specifications. Base core clock 1607 MHz, Boost clock 1683 MHz, effective memory clock 8000 MHz.

When tested on an open stand, ASUS Cerberus only warmed up to 66-67 °C. In the heavy test of Final Fantasy XV: Windows Edition, the core frequencies ranged from 1823-1848 MHz, and this is true for most other games. Rare peak bursts of Boost reached 1898 MHz.

The World of Tanks enCore test application draws Boost a little more, with drawdowns up to 1810 MHz.

The fans ran at about 1200 rpm with almost no noise.

Overclocking results can be called good. When the base frequency was increased to 1820 MHz, the average frequencies in Boost were close to 2050 MHz.

With a peak boost of up to 2101 MHz, the actual frequencies in Final Fantasy XV: Windows Edition were 2038-2063 MHz. The memory was able to work stably at 4374 (8748) MHz. To maintain stability at higher frequencies, the fan speed was increased to 1500 rpm. nine0021

Let’s compare ASUS CERBERUS-GTX1070TI-A8G with AMD Radeon RX Vega 56 and Radeon RX Vega 64 video cards. Competitors are tested only in face value.

Up to this point, we have been testing only the lower-end video cards of the ASUS Cerberus line, and now the time has come to look at high-performance solutions, one of which is ASUS Cerberus GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Advanced Edition ( CERBERUS GTX 1070 TI A 8 G ). Of course, modifications of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Ti cannot be classified as inexpensive and affordable for most video cards, but the version in question is currently one of the most affordable options in this segment from ASUS with an average price tag of $645 in domestic online stores. Let’s find out if it deserves your attention, or is it better to pay extra and purchase a more expensive version. nine0021

Packing and contents

The video card comes in a box with nice printing in dark colors. On the reverse side, there is traditionally a description of the key advantages of the product. Separately, the presence in the set of the activation code of a free 6-month premium subscription to the WTFast Gamers Private Network service was noted. It automatically optimizes the path of game packets between the user’s computer and the game server to minimize their loss and reduce the average response time (ping). nine0021

The list of system requirements for the computer where you plan to install the video accelerator is located on one side of the package. Based on the recommendations, the power supply must have a power of at least 500 W, provide a minimum of 42 A on the +12V line, and support one 8-pin PCIe power cable.

Video card comes with only a quick start guide and a CD with drivers and utilities.

A modified set of interfaces is used to display an image on the tested adapter:

  • 1 x DVI-D;
  • 2 x HDMI 2. 0b;
  • 2 x DisplayPort 1.4.

Recall that the reference version uses only one HDMI port, one DVI-D and three DisplayPort. In this case, ASUS decided to meet the needs of VR device owners by providing them with two HDMI ports.

Appearance

The design of the ASUS Cerberus GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Advanced Edition video card is made with a clear predominance of black, which is only slightly diluted with red elements. Thanks to this combination and the original asymmetric shape of the cooler casing, it will be easily recognizable against the background of competitors. nine0021

As for its interesting features, these include the use of a fully automatic production process ASUS AUTO-EXTREME Technology and a reliable Super Alloy Power II element base. It includes solid-state and tantalum-polymer capacitors, as well as chokes with a ferrite core. As a result, the manufacturer notes a decrease in operating temperatures, an increase in energy efficiency and an increase in service life. In turn, the video card power subsystem is made according to a reinforced seven-phase scheme, where six phases are responsible for powering the graphics core, and one is for video memory. nine0021

As in the reference version, the tested graphics adapter is powered by a PCI Express 3.0 x16 slot and one 8-pin PCIe connector. We note its good location, thanks to which the cooler does not make it difficult to disconnect the PCIe cable.

NVIDIA SLI technology uses appropriate MIO connectors on the front to connect bridges.

The reverse side of the PCB is protected by a backing plate which increases the rigidity of the structure. Unlike the previously reviewed more affordable ASUS Cerberus series video cards, it is made of metal, not plastic. We also note that one of the fixing screws of the cooling system is covered with a warranty sticker, so you will not be able to remove the radiator without losing the warranty. nine0021

The ASUS CERBERUS-GTX1070TI-A8G video accelerator is based on the NVIDIA GP104-300-A1 graphics chip, which is manufactured using a 16-nm process technology. It consists of 2432 CUDA cores, 152 texture units and 64 raster units. Testing was carried out in the «Gaming» mode, in which the frequency of the GPU corresponds to the recommended 1607 MHz in the nominal mode and 1683 MHz, taking into account the work of GPU Boost 3.0.

The memory of the tested video card is made up of Micron’s GDDR5 chips with a total capacity of 8 GB, which operate at the recommended effective frequency of 8008 MHz. Data exchange between the graphics core and memory is carried out through a 256-bit bus, which is capable of passing 256.3 GB of information per second. nine0021

Also, it would not be superfluous to recall the possibility of choosing two other operating modes in the proprietary GPU Tweak II utility — “OC” and “Silent”. In the first, the GPU frequency will rise to 1721 MHz (1746 MHz is indicated on the official website), and in the second it will not exceed 1645 MHz (the official website is silent about this mode).

Cooling system

ASUS Cerberus GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Advanced Edition video card (CERBERUS-GTX1070TI-A8G) with installed cooling system occupies two and a half expansion slots and has a total length of 270 mm according to the official website (280 mm according to measurements in our test lab). nine0021

The cooler consists of an aluminum radiator, four nickel-plated copper heat pipes with a diameter of 6 mm and two axial fans with a blade diameter of 96 mm, mounted on a plastic casing.

A separate low profile heatsink is used to cool the power subsystem components.

With automatic fan speed control, in the maximum load mode, the graphics core heated up to 71 ° C, and the cooler worked at 54% (1331 rpm) of its maximum power. According to subjective sensations, the noise was at a low level and did not interfere with work at all. nine0021

For comparison, let’s recall the performance of the ROG-STRIX-GTX1070TI-A8G-GAMING video card, which kept the GPU temperature at 64°C in the same mode. At the same time, the cooler worked at only 39%, and the core frequency reached 1785 MHz, which is slightly higher than 1759 MHz for ASUS CERBERUS-GTX1070TI-A8G. But the cooler of this video card also uses a more complex design with six 6mm heat pipes and three 88mm fans.
