How to install drivers for old Mobility Radeon cards on Windows 8 / Sudo Null IT News

Relatively recently, AMD released a special driver package for Windows 8, AMD Catalyst Legacy 12.6 (link to the news on the AMD website), but it did not work on a laptop with Mobility Radeon HD 3400 ( this does not mean that it will definitely not work for you — check it before proceeding with the procedure described in this topic).

After visiting the site, I found that the old mobile maps section does not mention Windows 8 at all. You can get a driver for Windows 7. Do you need it at all, this driver from the manufacturer, if the eight has a built-in one that works pretty well, it’s up to you. But I’ll say right away that the Catalyst Control Center (graphical configuration utility) may not work , alas, oh. How to get a driver for Windows 7, I’ll tell you under the cut.

1. Go to the AMD website and download the latest Windows 7 driver for your architecture.
2. Open the installation of components (windows + X -> Control Panel -> Programs and Features -> Install Windows Components), select the .NET Framework 3.5 component (now it cannot be downloaded from the site, and by default it is disabled, it turns on that way. There is still a rather inconvenient way to install it offline, from the installation disk, if someone really needs it, I’ll try to remember and write in the comments).
3. Trying to install the driver downloaded from the AMD website. It should install without errors (according to him), but immediately after clicking the final OK, we understand that nothing has really changed, the system is still using the driver from Microsoft. Important: although the driver did not work, it is necessary to install it (or at least unpack it somewhere on the hard drive)!
4. Download and install the modder: http://www.hardwareheaven.com/modtool.php
5. If you run the modder now, it will crash for an unknown reason, no matter what compatibility options we set for it. Therefore, download the file from the link, unpack it, and replace it with the exe-file of the same name in the directory where the modder was installed: http://www.driverheaven.net/driverheaven-tools-discussion/178628-possible-fix-9-2- later.html.
6. Yeah, now you can run this executable, tell it the path to the folder where the official drivers are unpacked (for me it’s C:\AMD\Support\12-6-legacy_vista_win7_32_dd_ccc_whql), press the modify button and wait a bit.
7. Now go to C:\AMD\Support\12-6-legacy_vista_win7_32_dd_ccc_whql\Packages\Drivers\Display\W7_INF, or wherever you unpacked the official drivers there. We see a lot of files there. We are interested in those that end in *.inf, they can be installed. Installation is done by right-clicking on the file and selecting «install». The names of the files in this directory may differ, for example, my driver was called CL145534.inf. Moreover, not all inf’s can be installed there, in my case the CW145534.inf lying there was not installed. An indicator of a successful installation can be considered the appearance of a dialog box with the inscription «successfully installed». If your driver does not want to be installed due to unsigned, see point 8, otherwise we skip it.
8. This item is needed if Windows refuses to install the driver due to unsigned. He will also reward us with the eternal inscription «Test Mode» in the lower right corner of the desktop (if someone can tell in the comments how to remove this inscription, it would be great)
   
   1. start, type cmd on the keyboard, right-click on the “Command Prompt” icon, select “run as administrator” from the menu that pops up at the bottom.
   2. We type the following commands there:

       bcdedit / set {current} testsigning on
      bcdedit /set {current} nointegritychecks true
       

   3. Press on the keyboard (windows button) + R, enter gpedit.msc there and press Enter. In the window that opens, go along the path User Configuration -> Administrative Templates -> System -> Driver Installation, in the right panel, double-click on the item «Digital Signature of Device Drivers», select «Off» and click OK
   4. We restart the computer and return to step 7. (Administrators and experienced Windows users here may remember that there is a gpupdate command and two spaces after it, which allows you to instantly update policies, so this will not work, you really need to reboot)

9. Opening the properties of the video card drivers. (windows+X -> Device Manager -> Video adapters -> Your graphics card (ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series) -> right click and select «properties» -> Go to «Driver» tab). We click the «Update» button, select the option «Search for drivers on this computer», select the option «Select a driver from the list of already installed drivers». There will be several drivers, including the one that comes out of the box with Windows — it will have the line “(Microsoft Corporation — WDDM v1.1)” in its name. We don’t need this one, we need the one named after your card, for example I have this one: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3400 Series. If there is nothing like that, we return to step 7 and look for some other inf that you forgot to try to install. After selecting the driver, click on next-next-OK until the installation is completed, and when the installation is completed, we reboot.
10. After the reboot, we make sure that the driver is really the right one (we open the properties of the video card drivers, as done in the previous paragraph, in the “vendor” field the name should change from Microsoft to Advanced Micro Devices).
11. We check that the Catalyst Control Center is not working (right-click on the desktop, the first item of the drop-down menu is just the Catalyst Control Center. After selecting this item, he thinks for a few seconds, and then in a separate dialog box writes a message with the general meaning «I don’t know what to configure, so I won’t start). 12. Trying to install again: http://www2.ati.com/drivers/legacy/amd_catalyst_12.6_legacy_win8.exe. If it is installed, the Catalyst Control Center should work for us. If not, well, at least we have a working driver from AMD.
