AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT: Two minute review

The AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT arrives in a post-Nvidia Turing world. Although Team Red has been dominating CPU sales because of processors like the AMD Ryzen 7 3700X and the Ryzen 9 3900X that came before it, the company has also been struggling to release a GPU to catch people’s attention in the same way as those CPUs. This means that this GPU has had its work cut out for it even before it hit the shelves.

Luckily, the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT is more than up to the task, which perhaps makes it all the more impressive. Even in the shadow of its successor, the AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT, it’s still a capable GPU that’s even more appealing due to the stock shortages newer GPUs are experiencing. This makes it one of the best graphics cards around for gamers on a budget who have struggled to find more recent cards.

Alongside the Radeon RX 5700, it’s AMD’s RDNA architecture and taken it to a level where it can contend with Nvidia’s powerful offerings. Not only does it give the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 a good run for its money, but it can also holds its own against the new Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super. By doing so, it helped paved the way for AMD to make a dramatic comeback.

Delivering excellent gaming performance alongside a host of great features, the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT is among the best graphics cards today.

AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT: Pricing and availability

The AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT is available today for $399 (about £315, AU$580), however there is an anniversary edition available with a beautiful design and higher clock speeds for $449 (about £350, AU$650). At both price points, it’s going toe-to-toe with the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 and Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super.

But, that’s where things get a bit more complicated. You see, before the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super was announced on July 2, the AMD Radeon RX 5700XT compared very favorably to the RTX 2070 Founders Edition, which cost about $150 (about £120, AU$215) more at the time. However, the $399 (about £315, AU$580) Nvidia Geforce RTX 2060 Super kind of steals AMD’s thunder.

Right now, the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT is trading blows with the 2060 Super, sometimes outperforming and sometimes underperforming, depending on the test. This means that the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT is still absolutely worth your time and money, but it’s not head and shoulders above the competition.

AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT: Features and chipset

AMD Navi graphics cards aren’t the first mainstream-accessible graphics cards to use a 7nm manufacturing process, but they are the first to be built from the ground up with gaming as its main goal. AMD hopes to boost rasterization performance in games by tailoring its graphics architecture specifically around gaming – rather than the compute-focused performance of the AMD Radeon VII.

In practice, this means that even with a technically weaker GPU, the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT is regularly able to stand up to the Radeon VII, thanks to its new RDNA architecture. This architecture should be able to provide up to 1.25 times the performance at the same clock speed as the previous GCN, or Graphics Core Next. This boost to performance-per-clock is joined by the benefits to power efficiency brought by the move to 7nm.

There are plenty of important software features in the AMD Radeon RX 5700XT, as well, however.

It seems like AMD is meeting Nvidia head on, providing Radeon Image Sharpening. This intelligently sharpens images – rather than just a straight sharpening filter, RIS is contrast-aware, so you don’t end up with any strange looking artifacts or textures in complicated scenes. The best part is that it doesn’t necessarily need developers to jump in for it to work on most games.

However, if developers do jump in, they can enable Contrast Adaptive Sharpening, or CAS, through the new FidelityFX system. This is an open-source library of image-improving technologies, and should theoretically work on most GPUs – if not now, then in the future. But, obviously these effects will work best on AMD processors.

The AMD Radeon RX 5700 also has a feature for the esports players out there, who are less focused on image quality, and are more focused on raw performance. And, with AMD Radeon Anti-Lag, those users should see much lower latency. This mode will essentially tell your processor to wait until the GPU is ready before sending new frames to it. That way, there shouldn’t be a buffer of frames waiting to be displayed, which can result in input lag in fast-paced titles like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive.

AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT: Performance

No matter how many cool software features come to AMD Navi, the most important thing, especially in a post-Nvidia Turing landscape is raw performance. And, well, the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT is a 1440p monster.

Playing games like Metro Exodus and World War Z in 1440p is an absolute breeze with this AMD graphics card, and we don’t notice any huge drops in performance, no matter how demanding the game is. The AMD Radeon RX 5700XT does struggle a little bit when you turn it up to 4K, but at the end of the day, it’s not designed for that kind of workload anyway.

That’s reflected in our benchmarks, too. In our 3DMark TimeSpy Extreme tests, the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT had no problems matching the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 Super, reaching 4,119 compared to 4,117 on the latter.

AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT: Final Verdict

The AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT is no doubt one of the best AMD graphics cards we’ve come across in years. It provides excellent 1440p gaming performance, and plenty of features that will actually be usable from day one.

However, it’s impossible to ignore the impact from the recently-released Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 Super and RTX 2060 Super to the AMD’s value. If AMD is able to drop prices on this card by about 50 bucks or quid, this graphics card will be a no-brainer. But, until then, it’s harder to recommend.

Still, AMD Navi absolutely does show promise, and if this is the first iteration of its new graphics architecture, we’re excited to see what it can do in the future.

We will investigate this issue using the PowerColor Red Devil Radeon RX 5700 XT OC video card as an example. It received a reinforced 10-phase power subsystem with DrMOS chips and a massive 3-fan cooler with a solid copper base and five 6mm heat pipes. Not without blood-red LED-backlight to match the name.

Another interesting feature is two BIOS chips and a small toggle switch to switch between them. One of them contains the “Silent” profile with reference frequencies, the other one contains the “OC” profile with factory overclocking. In it, the dynamic frequency rises from 1905 to 2010 MHz.

But since we decided to explore 4K resolution, we had to slightly strengthen the video card and make it easier for her. The auto-overclocking function in the driver helped us with this. In a few mouse clicks, the dynamic frequency rose to 2130 MHz. Video memory settings have not changed.

In games, the GPU frequency was usually around 1800 — 1900 MHz, but sometimes rose above 2000 MHz. The temperature was below 80°C with a critical value of 110°C. Noise from the video card did not interfere with comfortable immersion in the game. That’s what an efficient and thoughtful cooler means!

The following stand was used for testing:

  • Intel Core i9-9900K
  • Vinga CL3008B
  • ASRock Z390 Phantom Gaming SLI
  • 4x 8GB DDR4-3600 CORSAIR Dominator Platinum RGB
  • Apacer AS2280P2 M. 2 NVMe 480 GB
  • Apacer Panther AS340 960GB
  • Seagate Barracuda Pro 4TB ST4000DM006
  • Vinga VPS-1200Pl
  • Vinga Ark
  • Philips Brilliance 329P9H

We will test the way most gamers play, that is, using ready-made quality presets: if we get comfortable gameplay, we move on, if not, we go to a simpler profile and repeat the test. If you wish, you can take up fine manual tuning, however, we did not have time for this.

First of all, it is interesting to check the simpler games — maybe you shouldn’t go further. But everything turned out well. In DOTA 2 , feel free to turn the quality level to the maximum. Even with multi-hero collisions, there was no hint of stators or handling discomfort, and the average speed rose above 160 fps.

You can play World of Tanks on ultras in 4K, but light stators slip through. Perhaps they are not so noticeable on artillery and slow tanks, but on maneuverable light tanks they are striking. They do not particularly affect the gameplay, however, for comfort, it is better to go down to a simpler profile.

In War Thunder everything was smooth and pleasant at the maximum quality preset. Very rare events dropped below 30 fps only during tank damage. But we did not feel this drawdown itself, because we were already preparing the next tank with our thoughts. The average speed exceeded 90 FPS.

B CS : GO Danger Zone The engine has chosen high graphics quality by itself. In this mode, we did not feel any jamming or friezes. Quickly change position, notice opponents from afar and conduct aimed fire at them — there were no problems with all this.

An interesting situation occurred in PUBG . First, we chose a folk mix of low settings with ultra textures. For almost the entire test recording, very rare events kept around 50 fps. And only at the end we caught microfreeze up to 19 FPS. The average speed was a step away from 80 FPS.

Then, for the sake of interest, we turned all the settings to ultra. Average speed and rare events dropped from comfortable to playable levels. But the main thing is that in the same place on the roof there was no longer any stator, and the 0.1% Low indicator remained at around 25 FPS. Such is the repetition of network projects.

Fortnite turned out to be unplayable with the epic preset. Freezing starts immediately after entering the game. It affects every action you take, from choosing a comfortable position to shooting. Some people may be able to adapt or take it as an extra challenge, but most will jump straight to the easier preset.

For example, high profile. We did not notice a drop in the quality of graphics, but the video sequence became completely smooth and enjoyable. There were no issues with management either. Yes, and monitoring fixes comfortable speed indicators.

Very pleased Apex Legends — developers don’t get paid in vain. At the maximum preset, the gameplay is smooth and responsive, with an average speed of 75 FPS. For this I had to give almost the entire video buffer and about 10 GB of free RAM, but it was worth it.

Operations in the Rainbow Six Siege remain completely comfortable on ultra settings. Here, even in the 0.1% Low column, we did not see less than 65 frames / s. You can ignore the rest of the indicators. If only all games were like this!

Unexpectedly surprised A Plague Tale Innocence . The game clearly does not belong to the category of heavy blockbusters, but you can play comfortably only at a low quality preset. In spacious locations, we get less than 60 FPS, and in narrower corridors, the speed rises to 70.0008 requires 12 GB of video memory, which we did not have, so we immediately settled on the «More important than graphics» profile. 6 GB is enough for him. In narrow corridor locations, the statistics of very rare events stay above 35 fps, and in spacious rooms it drops to 24, but without stators and other troubles.

Assassin s Creed Odyssey can also be run at high profile. We did not see the stators and did not feel any jelly in the control. Therefore, even the battles were held with a bang. But the average speed dropped below 50 frames / s, and the feeling that the game was given to the system with difficulty did not leave.

The required lightness and smoothness of the video sequence is achieved with a medium preset. And with it, the frame rate rises to the region of 60 frames / s. If we were going through the game, we would choose this mode. Moreover, in the dynamics, the difference in picture quality was not noticed.

Nvidia hunter with RDNA in the blood

The Radeon RX 5700 XT is a good and above all more affordable alternative to the GeForce RTX 2070. Along with good high-res performance, everything is ready for the future PCI Express standard. 4.0.

AMD’s new Radeon graphics cards are semi-premiers: despite the American manufacturer touting its new RDNA architecture, which is supposed to shake up the «high-performance gaming» field, no particularly surprising technical details have appeared.

AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT benchmark: 7nm on PCIe 4.0

The tiny 7nm process technology has been successfully implemented on the Radeon VII. But now support for the PCI Express 4.0 standard and the use of GDDR6 graphics memory instead of HBM2 are added to it. The flagship of the new generation Radeon, the Radeon RX 5700 XT, must face off against the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070. As our measurements show, it succeeds. But the «wow effect» RX 5700 XT does not cause.

7nm process technology and the use of PCIe 4.0 are currently AMD’s forte, because other manufacturers see little reason to go the same way. AMD, on the contrary, is in full swing: the entire new generation of hardware uses PCIe 4.0 — new Ryzen processors, their corresponding motherboards, as well as graphics cards. The big advantage, compared to PCIe 3.0, is double the bandwidth. A noticeable effect, namely high read speed, can be expected when using new M.2-SSD drives. In the field of video cards, the effect will be rather subtle. For this reason, the RX 5700 XT does not require a new motherboard with PCIe 4.0 support. PCIe 3 will suffice.

Vega and Radeon VII graphics cards use HBM2 video memory, while newer Radeon models use GDDR6. Although AMD’s «High Bandwidth Memory» still has some advantages in some cases, its main disadvantage is its high cost. With 8 GB of GDDR6 graphics memory, the Radeon RX 5700 XT remains in familiar areas, as the novelty does not receive the huge 16 GB of HBM2-VRAM, like the Radeon VII. All in all, AMD is pushing the RDNA architecture forward with benefits such as reduced latency, which is important for gaming, as well as improved scalability. AMD does not yet offer an alternative to Nvidia’s real-time ray tracing technologies, but it, apparently, is already taking its place on the launch pad.

With Radeon 5700-family graphics cards, AMD wants to compete with Nvidia

In direct competition with the RTX 2070

In principle, the specifications of the Radeon RX 5700 XT are comparable to those of competitors.
