The presentation showed the results of testing a system based on AMD Ryzen 7 5900X and Radeon RX 6000 in three modern and demanding games with maximum graphics settings and 4K resolution. The games chosen were Borderlands 3 (Badass quality), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Gears of War 5 (Ultra quality). All games used the DirectX 12 graphics API.

It’s worth noting that no specific graphics card model has been revealed, and AMD fans may be left wondering that the data shown is not the result of testing the flagship RX 6000 line. Why not? NVIDIA in its presentation did not designate the GeForce RTX 3090, but the RTX 3080 as the flagship model. The GeForce RTX 3080 hasn’t gotten old yet, and NVIDIA’s 30-series of accelerators already have a more powerful — and yes, more expensive — model that is close in performance to the RTX 3090. In the context of a protracted shortage of video cards, we cannot vouch for adequate retail prices for the new product, but we will find out what it is capable of in games and work applications unsurpassed rendering speed in Blender with the help of the built-in Cycles engine — at the level of the GeForce RTX 3090. And with the help of hardware ray tracing blocks available through the OptiX API, export time can be reduced even further. The truth is that only a flagship graphics card can handle extremely complex projects that go beyond the RTX 3080 Ti’s 12GB of local memory.

When the ProRender engine is used, the situation changes: AMD graphics cards based on second-generation Navi chips use hardware logic to navigate in BVH structures by default, while NVIDIA chips do not. However, with a double set of FP32-compatible CUDA cores, the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti maintains parity with the Radeon RX 6800 XT and 6900 XT. The advantage of the RTX 3090 in this case is most pronounced.

Premiere Pro video editor is known to be best optimized for NVIDIA accelerators. Conclusions

When it comes to an intermediate upgrade of any model within an established line of graphics accelerators, a new product can be easily characterized by simple quantitative data of performance increase compared to the original product. Based on the «simple» RTX 3080, the Ti version managed to increase the average gaming frame rate by 9up to 12% FPS without ray tracing and from 11 to 14% in projects with ray tracing. The increase was enough to equalize the RTX 3080 Ti with the Radeon RX 6900 XT in a selection of games balanced by their liking for one or another GPU architecture at 1080p and 1440p screen resolutions. And in 4K, the new product has an undeniable advantage that AMD has nothing to cover, because the RX 6900 XT is already based on a fully functional GPU.

In absolute terms, the performance of the RTX 3080 Ti is such that it can run all but the heaviest games on a 4K screen at a comfortable 60 FPS frame rate without image scaling. But, true, and without ray tracing. Otherwise, playing in 4K (and sometimes even in 1440p) cannot be done without DLSS, however, AMD still does not have a suitable alternative in terms of performance, which fully explains why the RTX 3080 Ti turned out to be more expensive than the Radeon RX 6900XT. The only advantage AMD’s flagship has over the RTX 3080 Ti is more RAM. However, the new NVIDIA already has 12 GB of VRAM instead of 11, which is not critical for modern games, but will definitely extend the life of the product in the future.

As you might expect, the upgrade to the GeForce RTX 3080 made no sense to buy the top model of the series, the RTX 3090, as a gaming accelerator. You can squeeze another 4-7% FPS out of the flagship, but such a difference in performance does not justify the extra charge. The key advantage of the RTX 3090 gives you twice the amount of local storage needed for demanding workloads (such as 3D modeling complex projects or 8K video processing). However, the RTX 3080 Ti also performs well from the GP-GPU side when the requirements for VRAM are not so great.

The performance of the GeForce RTX 3080 Ti owes its performance to the additional functional blocks that NVIDIA has implemented on the GA102 chip. At the same time, there was a slight rollback of clock frequencies compared to the RTX 3080, but as a result, the power consumption of the device has increased significantly and is approaching the declared 350 watts. As a result, the graphics card needs no less effective cooling than the RTX 3090. If the proprietary incarnation of the RTX 3080, Founders Edition, has become a kind of benchmark for how quiet and compact a cooler for a powerful gaming video card can be, then the same design of the RTX 3080 Ti can hardly withstand additional load. Founders Edition still provides adequate GPU cooling, but at the cost of high noise levels.

Be that as it may, even the Founders Edition overclocks superbly to RTX 3090 and above, and partner modifications will certainly achieve better results. Speaking of the latter, NVIDIA has tried to make the RTX 3080 Ti unattractive for cryptocurrency mining, which in theory will help saturate the retail market. However, the general shortage of semiconductor chips and pent-up demand for other offerings will certainly play a role, and we don’t expect an abundance of RTX 3080 Ti in stores — at least at official prices and in the near future after the debut. Finally, even judging by recommended prices, we don’t think that the introduction of Ti has made the basic version of the RTX 3080 irrelevant: after all, the increase in performance is not that great, and you will have to pay a lot more for it. Users of old video cards of the GeForce GTX 1080 Ti class, who are ready for a decisive upgrade, can safely take either of the two models, as long as they manage to find it for an acceptable amount.
