Age DE Team

Big news from gamescom 2020!

The countdown to the launch of Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition starts today! Tonight, at gamescom: Opening Night Live, our team was excited to reveal the official trailer for Age III: DE, as well as kick off pre-orders for the game as it nears its release on October 15th.

It’s been years since we kicked off the idea of bringing back the Age of Empires series in definitive form, and through each game we’ve listened to our fans, learned, and refined our process to make the best possible true “Age” experience of each game that we can. In just a few months, long-time Age fans will be able to complete their collection, and those yet to try Age III: DE will be able to experience this groundbreaking game in the best version possible—continuing our mission of setting the standard of what it means to create “definitive” editions of classic games.

What is Age III: DE?

In Age III: DE, players can expect 4K graphics, rebuilt 3D assets, a modernized UI, cross-play multiplayer, and fully enhanced soundtrack and audio. In addition to all previously released content, Age III: DE also features two new game modes and two new civilizations exclusive to the Definitive Edition.

For game modes, we’ve added a series of Historical Battles set within the time period the game covers, as well as several new fan favorite Art of War challenges—which were added after the overwhelmingly positive community feedback about their appearance in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition! These challenges are specifically tailored to not only teach you the in’s and out’s of real-time strategy games, but the unique nuances of Age III: DE’s gameplay and meta strategies that have evolved over years of play.

When it comes to civilizations, Age of Empires III and its expansions featured 14 civilizations from across Europe, the Americas, and Asia, and we’re adding two brand-new civilizations exclusively to the Definitive Edition: The Swedes and The Incas!

  • The Swedes are a brand new addition to the franchise and cover one of history’s most unlikely great powers: a small European nation which eclipsed all military convention and became a powerhouse on the European battlefields thanks to their innovative military tactics.
  • The Incas are a more traditional Age of Empires civilization, covering one of the largest empires in South America, where they constructed mighty stone cities, citadels and palaces.

Whether you’re more of a city builder or aiming for military domination, we think all players will have a lot of fun exploring each both civ’s unique play styles!

New and Improved

Speaking on civilizations, a key focus of our work at World’s Edge is to authentically represent the cultures and peoples that we depict in our games. While developing Age III: DE, we realized that we weren’t upholding that value as well as we could regarding our Native American cultures; so we set out to fix that: working directly with tribal consultants to respectfully and accurately capture the uniqueness of their peoples, history, and cultures. Returning players will find there’s been some fundamental changes to the Native American civilizations, and we hope you find them as compelling as we do!

We’ll have more to share as we get closer to launch.

WHAT IS THE AGE OF EMPIRES 3 DEFINITIVE EDITION RELEASE SCHEDULE?

Microsoft has confirmed that the Age of Empires 3 Definitive Edition release date has been set for Thursday, October 15, 2020.

The tech giant has avoided making it an official exclusive, meaning you can download and play across several different platforms, rather than just the Microsoft Store.

The current download size for AoE 3 is 40GB, but it should be noted that this might go up after a few post-launch patches.

When it comes to when things will be kicking off on launch day, Microsoft has revealed that the Age of Empires 3 DE release time has been set for 2pm BST, on October 15, 2020.

Those waiting to play it in the United States will get access much earlier, and will be able to download and play at around 6am PDT on the same day.

Due to the time difference, gamers in Australia and New Zealand will be waiting the longest for access, which will arrive at 00:00 AEST and 02:00 NZT, on October 16.

For a rundown of how Age of Empires 3 Definitive Edition will play, you can check out the official description below:

The Explorer

At the beginning of each match, you start with an Explorer: a courageous adventurer that can explore the map and claim treasures by defeating menacing guardians. Each treasure collected will grant you a bonus in the form of experience, resources, units, or other advantages to help your civilization gain the upper hand.

Shipments

As your civilization gains experience in a match, you can request shipments from your Home City. These shipments can be resources, units, or other interesting and unique bonuses.

Shipments are represented by cards, and each match lets you bring a fully customizable deck of cards to use over the course of the game. A deck can contain up to 25 cards, of which there are over 100 to choose from when creating your personalized deck! You can even have multiple decks premade to suit your differing strategies, civilization choices, or play style.

Trending

    Politicians

When you want to advance to a new Age, you’re required to choose a Politician to lead the way. Every Age will offer multiple choices in a Politician, each of whom grants their unique bonuses upon advancement. Politicians may offer you additional resources to kick start your economy, military upgrades, military units, and even hot air balloons if you choose to adopt their policies for your civilization.

    Batch Training

Most military units can be trained in batches, allowing you to quickly recruit groups of soldiers to enter the fray! It also opens the door to orchestrating clever ambushes and traps—especially when combined with Home City shipments.

    Resource Gathering

Resources gathered by Villagers are instantly added to your stockpiles without having to be dropped at the Town Center or other drop-off points. This streamlined system lets you focus your attention on the action, and helps expand your civilization across the map.

    Map Layouts

Maps in Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition are designed to push players to expand into the open, which naturally leads to tense moments and action-packed sequences of gameplay. You’ll be constantly battling for access to resource locations and Trading Posts—creating an ever-evolving tug of war for map control!

Review: Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition

Back in 2017, Microsoft announced a return to Age of Empires. At E3, they announced a remaster of the original 1997 Age of Empires game, and just a few months later at Gamescom, they announced remasters of the second and third parts. And the big news that day? Microsoft is making a fourth game. It seems there’s still life in Microsoft’s real-time strategy franchise.

The last of three remasters will be released this week. And it’s not the most beloved game of the trilogy, but it’s part of the family.

Age of Empires 3 has always been the strange creation of a trilogy. Ensemble Studios, the original creators of the game, have truly updated the franchise with this game. The introduction of new features such as a card system, hero squads, and most importantly, a very diverse set of civilizations.

The game takes place in the Age of Discovery. It features Native American, European, and Asian factions. The concept of the game is that you yourself are not an empire, unlike previous Age of Empires games, but are a small part of the empire. You have a home base that can send you equipment and resources. Building a base in Age of Empires 3 is best described as building a colony or outpost.

With the World’s Edge remaster, Tantalus Media and Forgotten Empires have added the year 2020 to this 2005 game. With Xbox Live integration, 4K assets, a new user interface, server-based multiplayer matchmaking, and a new soundtrack with additional music. But there is also new content.

      Complete Pack

Art of War, Historical Battles and Campaigns

So what is Age of Empire III: Definitive Edition’s «full pack»? It includes the main game from 2005 and expansion Warlords and Asian dynasties. In addition, the developers have added new content to the game.

To help you on your first journey to perfection in strategy, a new guide has been added to the game. They are called The Art of War and will teach you everything you need to know about playing Age of Empires III. From the early economy, create orders to naval battles. In them, you can earn bronze, silver or gold medals, depending on how well you manage to complete these lessons. All this explains to you the wonderful von Clausewitz, who for the history fans among us was a Prussian general and military theorist. Overall I liked them and find them useful for players who want to compete online.

In addition, the developers have added something fresh to the game. Historical battles.

That’s exactly what you think. A series of scripted skirmish missions designed to mimic the famous historical battles set in the age of Age of Empires 3. They are a fun addition and will provide you with a couple of hours of content.

Where the developers haven’t added much is in the campaign. There is no additional content here, except for reworked cutscenes and some changes in Warlords campaign. But I can imagine that many people have not played them for a long time. And this campaign is still fun to play.

      Multiplayer and skirmishes

Multiplayer has been completely redesigned. It now runs on Microsoft Xbox Live services and has server hosting. Hosting arranged for me in the Netherlands. I expect it to be the same as the other two remasters in that respect.

Age of Empires 3 still has an active community playing the game, which is likely to get even bigger once this remaster launches. So, for anyone who wants to bring their combat skills to the world, there are ample opportunities to do so.

In firefight mode, I test myself without embarrassing myself in front of other people. Playing against two or three strong AIs is a fun way to keep the game interesting.

      New factions

New factions have been added to the game — Swedes and Incas. The Swedes are the pure civilization of Age of Empires 3, with a focus on gunpowder and mercenaries. Meanwhile, the Incas are closer to the players of Age of Empires 2. Together with the Incas, you will build your city and fortifications and stick to a more defensive strategy. These stone walls will be difficult to demolish.

      Still watching

Year 3 Age of Empires 2005 was a really beautiful game. The water was amazing and the units were very detailed. And to be honest, even today the game looks fine.

This makes me wonder if a complete remaster of this game was even necessary. Of course, the new units look much better. These 4K resources do the trick. But now the beautiful assets don’t seem to come alive due to the animation sometimes getting stuck in 2005.

      Unit comparison

The game environment is amazing. The remaster certainly did them justice. The water is as beautiful as ever. Most importantly, sometimes the remasters go terribly wrong, the game hasn’t changed the art style. You feel like you’re playing the same game as 15 years ago. I’m sure some people wouldn’t even notice the difference if they hadn’t played the non-final version for a while. And this is good. Recently, Warcraft III Reforged showed that the opposite can be bad.

While the new assets look great, they don’t solve a problem I’ve had with Age of Empires 3 in the past. Quarrels look dirty. When participating in a big fight, sometimes it’s hard to see what’s really going on.

A big plus is the ability to zoom out even further. This has also been added to other remasters and is a godsend.

      Improved user interface

One of the biggest improvements is the new user interface. It looks clean and modern while maintaining the style of Age of Empires 3.

      The game’s final style UI

A nice feature is the ability to change your UI. There is classic, final and default UI. The classic and standard versions are quite similar, and the final UI will be a welcome addition for people who have played more real-time strategy games in recent years. With resources at the top and a map at the bottom left.

Rock, paper, scissors and a card game

In the gameplay, all discussions of the third part of Age begin. This is where Ensemble Studios took the biggest risk with the original release. The addition of hometowns and maps is a refreshing aspect of the strategy genre even today. During the game, you can call for help, upgrades, resources, or reinforcements from your home city. It works through the card system. Players can build a deck before the game starts. Experience points are required to use the cards.

These decks have caused some controversy in the past as they were not properly balanced for new players. Fortunately, the developers have fixed this. You can still build decks, but all players will be able to play on an equal footing.

Players can also upgrade their hometown, allowing them to use new maps in single player. Personally, I think the map and hometown system is an interesting and fun mechanic in Age of Empires 3 and doesn’t deserve all the negative feedback it’s received over the years.

One aspect of the game that I understand the negative reviews is the lack of balance. Some civilizations are still stronger than others. Hopefully this will be fixed in the next patches.

What turned many strategy fans away from Age of Empires 3 is the lack of accessible rock-paper-scissors mechanics. Or rather, the perception of his absence. People started playing Age of Empires 3 after the very accessible and easy to understand second part and expected something like this. But Age of Empires 3 is not that easy to understand because of the time period. Many players in strategy games have grown up with the ideas of swordsmen, spearmen and knights. The weapons introduced in Age of Empires 3 disabled many of them. This is probably the reason why Relic and Microsoft decided to go back to the Middle Ages for Age of Empires 4.

Another change to the formula is the variety of fractions. After the first two games in the series became popular, a lot has changed in the world of strategy games. Games like Warcraft III and Red Alert 2 introduced more unique and diverse factions. Changes in the industry are reflected in Age of Empires 3. The factions have different playstyles and play differently. For example, the Dutch have banks that guarantee them a decent late game income, but their settlers make do with gold, not food. Makes them weak in the early game.

The Japanese use shrines for guaranteed income, which they prefer to place nearby herding animals for additional income. This means that the Japanese base is much larger than other factions.

Age of Empires 3 has always been a more dynamic game than the first two parts. Some people might like it, some might hate it. It’s not Starcraft by any means, but you’ll notice the difference in pace when you exit Age of Empires 2.

      Bugs and annoyances

The game has bugs, unfortunately. Sometimes your worker refused to build something, and in some cases, some of my units got stuck on top of a mountain or in an inaccessible valley.

More annoying than small beetles is the trap and formation effect. The slow effect means that units will slow down when hit. When you expect your army to run because, oddly enough, you’re losing the battle, you want them to run from the battlefield. In Age of Empires 3, they seem to be crawling away from the battlefield.

Same with formations. When units form groups, they also slow down the units and often ruin the running animation completely. These are the things you would like to see fixed or tweaked in a remaster. But since the team has been updating Age of Empires 2 since release, there is some hope that they will work on this part as well.

      Changes to Native American factions

In addition to adding two new nations to the game, Microsoft and the developers have been working hard to improve the historical accuracy of the Native American factions in the game. They worked with tribal consultants to make changes to the two factions. The Iroquois are now called Haudenosaunee and the Sioux are called Lakota.

      Lakota hometown

In addition, they also changed the main component of their gameplay. Gold was removed from their economy as these tribes did not use gold but fur as a medium of trade. Oh, and they also redid the voice acting for these two Native American tribes. All in all, a nice improvement to be welcomed.

      Soundtrack

The original Age of Empires 3 soundtrack was fantastic, and it hasn’t suddenly become less fantastic because of the passage of time. New songs for each faction are a nice addition.

      Cheat Codes

      BigAndy Monster Truck

Last but not least — and we don’t want you to miss out on this information — are the cheat codes. Age of Empires has always had fun cheat codes. In Age of Empires 2, you could summon a cobra machine or turn all the birds into flying dogs. In Age of Empires 3, you can create monster trucks, a rainbow-flying pig, or George Crushington, a jumping statue that crushes everything in its path. Yes it is.

      Conclusion

With Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition, you get a complete package of strategic entertainment, hampered only by design decisions made 15 years ago and not yet fixed.

It may seem that I am too harsh about the third part of the franchise. He is often considered a bastard in the family, a failed or even unwanted child. But Age of Empires 3 pushed the strategy genre forward in a way that few games in the genre have done since. The introduction of hometowns and the card system was a big step forward, and the diverse playstyles and mechanics of the different civilizations made Age of Empires a deeper and more interesting franchise. He just picked the wrong time frame for franchise innovation.

What real-time strategy developers have learned from Age of Empires 3 has inspired and will continue to inspire every new entry in the genre. And I’m sure that Relic and World’s Edge have carefully studied Age of Empires 3 for the development of the fourth game. As we can already see some similarities with different mechanics for each faction and number of factions.

An amazing soundtrack, beautiful scenery, great quality of life improvements, and a more modern interface make Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition enough to justify its existence. Although the graphics did not need it.

Although perhaps a bit of an unnecessary remaster, it was very enjoyable to play. With this remaster, Age of Empires III can proudly stand alongside other games in the franchise.

We can say that the franchise is divided into two parts. On the one hand, the main line, with the most popular games of the saga, which the vast majority knows. On the other hand, a series of more or less successful spin-offs, with which Microsoft tried to continue to push the brand. Let’s take a look at the first one first.

          Age of Empires (1997)

First of all Age of Empires It appeared in 1997 and was designed by Ensemble Studios, published and distributed by Microsoft. , a formula that would repeat until the studio’s dissolution in 2009. In this first game, the player had to develop civilization by gathering materials, improving their infrastructure, and building an iron age empire. You can choose between 12 civilizations, each with its own features and technologies.

Development was very simple. We started at Stone Age we progressed to Tool Age (Neolithic), we followed the game in Bronze Age and finally the game ended in Iron Age, where we will win the game. Each promotion brought the player different upgrades and tools.

El Age of Empires originally had four campaigns , a way random map and even multiplayer mode where 8 players could participate. A year after the release of Age of Empires received its first expansion pack , denominated Rise of Rome , with several additional civilizations and graphical improvements, as well as some improvements in gameplay. This is the first title of the saga that was updated by and it was reprinted in the year 2018 entitled Age of Empires: definitive edition .

Age of Empires II: Age of Kings (1999)

Less than a year after expansion Age of Empires , the same research launched the second part of the game . This title is not only the most famous in the saga, but is considered the best of all by most players.

Ages will change and now it’s time to go through Dark Times , Feudal Age , Castle Age s and finally Imperial Age . Gameplay has improved, but ‘s mechanics remain the same as ‘s, with its four resource types to make all the materials needed to boost an era. you could choose between 13 civilizations different, which have also been balanced. Each of them also had unique architectural style .

Following in the footsteps of its predecessor, Age Of Empires II it was also expanded within a year of its release. Currently has 4 additions , but some of them arrived relatively recently. They are as follows:

          • Age of Empires II: Conquerors (2000)
          • Age of Empires II HD: Forgotten (2013)
          • Age of Empires II HD: African Kingdoms (2015)
          • Age of Empires II HD: Rise of the Rajas (2016)

Finally, in 2019, the game will see its final edition with all expansions and 35 civilizations. Subsequently, Age of Empires II: Final Edition has also been expanded Lords of the West y Down Dukes both released in 2021. With both expansions, there are already 39 civilizations of in the game, and it is still alive, as it was in 1999.

          Age of Empires III (2005)

In the face of Age of Mythology in the gap that was the first spin-off of the saga, which we will talk about later, Ensemble Studios resumed the main line of the game He improved the IP, which was already round by itself, by adding trading and putting some finishing touches on RPG mechanics .

In 2006 it will receive its first expansion, Warlords , which will add three Native American civilizations. In 2007, three more civilizations joined us. Asian Dynasties , the second expansion pack.

The only problem with this title is that could never outshine its predecessor . However, in 2020 Age of Empires III returned to the first division again with its updated version: Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition . As in the previous case, DLC has been released for this game.

In April 2021, the game received US card . A few months later came the addition Royals , with two unprecedented African civilizations. And before the end of the year, Forgotten Empires (one of the two studios that developed these new versions) announced that they are working on another extension .

          Age of Empires IV (2021)

All efforts and money invested by Microsoft in relaunching the Age of Empires brand has been completed and n Age of Empires IV developed by Relic Entertainment 9 . This title is back to the origins Age Of Empires II , that is, back to the Middle Ages..,

Video game premiere new graphics engine, with better details and with the front end of is much more thought out.
