The much loved real-time strategy video game ‘Age of Empires’ is heading to Android and iOS

Age of Empires is my all-time favorite game, and you guys can’t even imagine my happiness when I got to know that it’s coming to mobile devices. However, there are few twists in the story, and in this post, we will discuss everything you need to know about the upcoming Age of Empire mobile game, or you can call it with its actual title name ‘Return to Empire.’

Remember the good old days of setting up the PCs around the table, dividing people into teams, and then jumping into an Age of Empires LAN match. And once you defeat everyone else and hear that victory chime, you start with a new match. With time Age of Empires lost its charm; I played it last around 2-3 years ago. But it’s coming to the mobile, and I can’t wait.

Age of Empires Mobile announced

Return to the Empires (Age of Empires Mobile) was actually revealed during the 2021 Tencent annual game conference. But it came to our attention yesterday when Daniel Ahmad, a well-known Senior game Analyst, tweeted about it.

Tencent’s TiMi Studios Group has confirmed it is working with Xbox Game Studios and subsidiary World’s Edge to adapt the Age of Empires IP for smartphones.

As per the details provided, Tencent’s Timi Studios (known for games like COD Mobile, Pokemon Unite) is working with Xbox Game studios and Subsidiary World’s Edge to adapt Age Empires IP for mobile platforms.

The game is being developed under the title ‘Return to Empire’ and is set to release in China. Sadly by the looks of it, it seems that the game might take quite some time to get an English version if it ever will.

What’s new in the Age of Empires Mobile?

An official dedicated website for the game has been launched. And we were able to gather some teaser-trailer videos of the game alongside some screenshots. The background music used in the teaser-trailer videos is the same theme song used in the old Age of Empire titles, and it is sure to give you goosebumps.

In the trailer video, we can see that the game’s core mechanics will be the same. But the game has been modernized, and the graphics (OMG!) looks fabulous.

Final Words

On the official website of the game, the developers have already started taking pre-registration for the title. Anyone living in china can pre-register for the game using their QQ account. The developers have also promised in-game rewards for all the players who pre-register.

The developers have also announced that they will be releasing a full demo video alongside more information about the game on 14th August. So you better stay tuned with us for more updates on the title.

Sadly, at the moment, we have no details whether Return to the Empires (Age of Empires Mobile) will release outside China or not. However, since it’s Tencent that is developing the game, the chances for the game to release globally are pretty high. But for now, we will have to wait and watch. Fingers crossed.

“Age of Empires” Mobile Game Available Next Week — RADII

Age of Empires fans in China, save the date: Tuesday, March 29, will see the release of Return to Empire, the mobile version of the classic real-time strategy (RTS) game.

This marks the first collaboration between Xbox and China’s TiMi Studio Group, a subsidiary of Tencent Games that previously developed award-winning mobile games Honor of Kings, Call of Duty: Mobile, and Pokémon Unite. Honor of Kings was the top-grossing, free-of-charge game worldwide in 2020, making over 2.45 billion USD in revenue.

The two gaming giants’ partnership was first announced in May 2021, and the official trailer for the mobile version of Age of Empires was released in August that same year.

Over the past few months, Chinese players have enjoyed access to several rounds of beta tests through Return to Empire‘s official website.

What’s more, gameplay videos have been circulating on both Bilibili and YouTube, unleashing a wave of comments from Chinese gamers and Age of Empires aficionados worldwide.

Released back in the glory days (the ’90s, of course — 1997, to be exact), Age of Empires sees players take control of an ancient real-world civilization. Gamers extract resources, build infrastructure, develop their economies, and clash militarily with their enemies. Since Age of Empires‘ initial release, the title has expanded into a franchise of related games.

Many fans have expressed their excitement over Return to Empire, but a handful remain skeptical about the game.

Several Chinese netizens question if the visuals and gameplay will hold up to those of Rise of Kingdoms, a popular mobile RTS game developed by Shanghainese mobile game studio Lilith Games.

Meanwhile, a few foreign gamers have criticized the fighting style of the mobile game, saying that there is too much of a resemblance to Japanese anime. Some have also questioned the game’s historical accuracy.

TiMi’s promotional campaigns for Return to Empire have been going full steam regardless of the mixed online reactions.

For example, the studio initiated a partnership with Global Game Art Contest to hold a special art competition from December 2021 to March 2022. Participants were invited to submit artwork inspired by the game, so long as it fits in one of three categories: landscape design, character design, and illustration.

Incentivized by a cash prize of 100,000 RMB (roughly 15,700 USD), fans from around the globe have been submitting a steady stream of entries. The results will be announced in April this year.

Will the mobile version of Age of Empires follow in the footsteps of Tower of Fantasy and get a global release? Tencent has yet to release a statement on the matter, but here’s to hoping it happens (and doesn’t take long!).

Age of Empires IV is like a mighty nation that has passed through the years and trials, and it turned out to be neither time nor the storm of change, nor the decline in demand for real-time strategy games. Why, “The Age of Empires” is one of the few classic series that have survived to this day and have not lost their originality and unique face. Everything here is familiar and dear to the heart. And the usual strategic mechanics are still able to captivate the experienced ruler, who dictates his iron will with the mouse and hot keys. This alone would have been enough for laudatory odes, but the developers went further and created a genuine sense of epochalism.

It’s an incomparable feeling when starting a new exciting game

Cognitive pomposity

Take, for example, the approach to historical campaigns. Age of Empires IV does not skimp on the scale and introduces the player into the historical context with spectacular and masterfully made screensavers. These are not videos on the engine, but specially filmed footage with live actors in costumes appropriate for the era. It’s like watching a documentary film.

There are breathtaking shots of majestic modern cities (for example, Moscow, London or Paris), as well as interesting narrative scenes with elements of augmented reality (for example, when an ancient fortress and the Mongols besieging it are graphically indicated on a green meadow). This splendor is complemented by a moderately pompous voice-over, subtly tuning in the right way. In a word, everything here prepares for powerful historical clashes of civilizations. And these expectations are fully justified.

Of course, you should not learn history from local videos — for the sake of ease of perception, many facts are interpreted here quite freely. And the choice of actors and conflicts is curious. Here, on the side of the French, we have to fight the British in the Hundred Years War, take part in the Battle of the Thirty and keep the siege of Paris. The scenario of the Norman line promises battles on the fields of England and participation in a fratricidal war for the right to own and command these lands. As the Mongol Empire, get ready to conquer Rus’ and China with lightning speed. Fans of national history will certainly appreciate the “Rise of Moscow” campaign, which features epoch-making battles like the Battle of Kulikovo, Standing on the Ugra River or the siege of Kazan.

In terms of gameplay, the campaigns are also implemented at the highest level: the classic tasks from the category of «evolve and win» are diluted with interesting missions with special conditions. For example, recruiting knights for a decisive battle, paying tribute to the Mongols, or holding certain lines from endless and invincible waves of opponents. Some variability is even provided for here: the same tribute to the Golden Horde can be paid, or it can be ignored, but in this case you will have to face harsh consequences. It all turned out to be holistic, interesting and extremely exciting. And when playing for each faction, you feel a special specificity, there are certain local nuances. And this is felt not only in the battles of historical campaigns!

I can state with confidence: Kazan took it!

Nuances of Empires

There are more playable factions in Free Single Player than in Campaign. In addition to the four sides of historical scenarios, it is allowed to take over the reins of China, the Abbasid dynasty, the Holy Roman Empire and the Delhi Sultanate. Each of the eight nations, of course, has features and advantages that reflect the identity of each civilization. Rus’ boasts improved wooden outposts and strong fences, as well as the ability to get gold for killing wild animals. The rapid construction of buildings and fortifications and the special dynastic development system are the distinctive side of China. Economic technologies cost less to France, and merchant ships bring in twenty percent more profit. And the Holy Roman Empire has some powerful units one time period ahead of others. If you start from these nuances when playing for a specific faction, then victory is practically in your hands. But it is also important to keep in mind the strengths and weaknesses of the opponent.

There are four epochs in each game: dark, feudal, castle and imperial. To move from one to the next, you need to build a landmark (one of the two to choose from). With the transition to a new era, new buildings open up, and with them breakthrough technologies and, of course, powerful troops. However, for the final campaign against the enemy, it is not necessary to wait for the peak of development, and already under the feudal system, you can easily finish the game. Or a rather smart artificial intelligence will do it …

All resources can be exchanged for gold (and vice versa) at an unfavorable exchange rate on the market. Sometimes it helps a lot

Separately, I note that there are plenty of settings for a single free battle here — from choosing certain biomes and map features to specific victory conditions. And if you don’t want to delve into these nuances, but want to quickly join the battle on special conditions, then Age of Empires IV has four interesting templates, not counting a simple solo battle against everyone and a team battle with AI allies. Clearing of Victory places dense forests between warring factions; «Maze of Opportunities» is a kind of homage to the map «Mongolia» from Age of Empires II; fight for the only land crossing across the ocean bay will be in the «Unstable Front»; and in Empire Divided, get ready to feel nostalgic for the Arabia map from the first AoE.

And if you feel like your military/economic craft needs polishing, be sure to check out the Art of War mode. Here, in the course of various tests, you will have to learn both the basic basics and the subtle matters of managing an empire. The best thing is to prepare for the main part of Age of Empires IV — the battle with live players in a multiplayer game. We, alas, played before the release and were not able to try out the most exciting discipline. But, judging by the general state of the project, it should be excellent.

Pros:

  • the classic strategic component is still great;
  • beautiful historical campaigns;
  • interesting and elaborate faction features.

Weaknesses:

  • if you really care about historical accuracy, then the campaigns probably won’t bring much joy.

Graphics

Nice picture skillfully combines the recognizable visual mood of the series and modern graphic effects.

Sound

Musical compositions and luxurious sound design are faithful to the majestic nature of Age of Empires IV.

Nice nuance: faction units are voiced in their respective languages, which works great for immersion. Although all sorts of “I will be glad to fight with you …” or “there is obedience” from the settlers and soldiers of Rus’ cause mixed feelings …

Single game

An excellent campaign and a variety of single-player battles will captivate for a long time. Especially if you’re hungry for a quality old-school RTS.

Team play

Alas, the pre-release acquaintance with Age of Empires IV did not allow us to fully meet with living emperors in a multiplayer game. However, the powerful network potential is noticeable even in a single game.

General impression

The Queen of RTS is back, majestic as ever, and it looks like her throne will remain for a long time.

Rocker Oleg Abramov, aka Radio Tapok, will talk about the Russian Empire in the new album

RUSSIA

future

Initially, Radio Tapok became famous as a performer of Russian-language cover versions of foreign hits.

Ilya Benton

The rocker’s second work was called «The Age of Empires». Vocals are being recorded and the songs are mixed. The album is scheduled for release in March 2023.

— All the music and lyrics were invented by me, — Oleg Abramov told Metro. “I recorded rough versions of all the instruments myself, and then gave them to professional guitarists so that they played everything smoothly and cleanly.

If the first album of the musician «Heritage» was dedicated to the events of different eras, the new compositions cover the period of the XVII-XX centuries. and tell about the rise and fall of the Russian Empire:

— I was interested in this period, because it was an era of great discoveries — scientific, geographical. In addition, not all corners of the country were mastered then, which is also very curious. I will not reveal all the nuances, but I can say that the album will contain songs about Peter’s achievements, the Time of Troubles, the reign of Ivan the Terrible. There will also be a track connected with the February Revolution of 1917 and one of the characters of those events. By the way, to my shame, for a long time I could not realize that we had at 19In 1717 there were two revolutions in Russia — February and October. And in the head of many of my friends the same mess.

8 songs will be on the forthcoming album of Radio Tapok singer "Era of Empires". The release of the work is scheduled for March 2023.

A few days ago, the singer presented on the Web the song «Petropavlovsk», which will be included in the new album:

— It tells about the battle in the Far East, unknown in popular culture. It took place in 1854 during the Crimean War, when the main fighting between the Ottoman, British, French and Russian empires took place in the Crimea. England and France then sent a squadron of ships to capture Kamchatka. There was the port of Petropavlovsk, now the city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. Having learned that an attack was being prepared, our fighters, cut off from the main army, gathered and took up defense. These were Cossacks, regular units and just militias, hunters. Despite the numerical superiority of the enemy, they managed to survive and hold the line. When I heard this story, it just struck me.

According to the musician, the composition «Petropavlovsk» reflects the spirit of the new album and is a bridge connecting the «Era of Empires» with its predecessor.

At the same time, «The Age of Empires» will differ markedly musically. If «Legacy» was made in the style of brutal heavy-power metal, now we can hear elements of other directions, in particular punk rock.

Oleg says that he plans to release concept works in the future:

– I think it’s more interesting that way. It’s like a book with themed stories. And I already have an idea for a third album — it will be dedicated to World War II.

They take it out of the ruins and drink from the cap while secretly wiping away tears.
